      SoCalFreelance yeah way to go Ferrari, back to turbocharged v8, which made the F40 such an indomitable beast that beat every car through the 80s and 90s. Twin turbo for life buddy! That means real super power!

      SoCalFreelance I came to this review for the 488, I stayed for the F40. Still the best recipe for uber sportscars is a stripped-out proper race derived platform, with an astonishing engine to match. And for some reason I just love small displacement V8 engines, they just have character to them that is lot in the bigger ones. In a small V8 every .1 of a liter counts, with big ones you can go for 5.7 or 6.5 or even 7.0 and won't feel the big difference. And the sound, much more defined in the smaller ones!

      And it's logical that turbocharged car will never be so fantastic, emotional, raw and puristic as the pinnacle of all supercars - the 458 with the best naturally aspirated V8 in the world. However, Ferrari again made the benchmark supercar with the 488 as it clearly seems.

  • @EvanderSmart
    @EvanderSmart Před 9 lety +63

    There are some contradictions. This 488 is not here to replace the Speciale, but the 458. The Speciale is a tuned 458. Does he not think they will make a 488 Speciale?
    Getting out of a Speciale, then adding electric steering, turbos and more power, the new Ferrari will drive much differently. Just making a sports car faster doesn't mean you make it better. Great sports cars connect with the driver perfectly, and the new tech remove that connection for higher power and efficiency. You give something to get something. Personally, I'd take less raw power, for a better connection to the driver any day.

    • @Kaisuke971
      @Kaisuke971 Před 9 lety +3

      Evander Smart Yeah the 488GTB is here to replace the 458, not the speciale (he said that in the vid doe), but the thing that will replace the Speciale will have Challenge Stradale, Scud, and Speciale philosophy and is likely to not be called 488 Speciale (like we don't have 458 Scud and F430 CS).
      For the second part, well, Ferrari can make a Twin Turbo flatplane V8 car, because the F40 was so good, we can't judge them for that. It's not the case of the V12 doe. To me they've actually made a proper beast with this one, and it's insanely quick. It does sound really good too, and it's more livable for everyday driving. Also the throttle response is said to be awesome, and the car is lighter than the special. It's a complete winner to me. And well, the numbers don't lie.

    • @EvanderSmart
      @EvanderSmart Před 9 lety

      He said on e thing, but he spent the whole video comparing the tuner to the stock car. So either he's contradicting himself, or comparing the wrong cars. Either way, he's screwing up the video.
      And the 488 doesn't sound very good at all, compared to the other special Ferraris, or other sports cars. Very few turbo sports cars have great engine notes. An advantage of a naturally-aspirated engine.

    • @Kaisuke971
      @Kaisuke971 Před 9 lety

      Evander Smart Well to me it sounds pretty good. I mean compared to the 458 it doesn't sound that much worse. The 458 has a loud and flat sound, in fact, nothing really special. It's on par with the 458, and they gently "added" some turbo wistle, which is nice.
      Well in fact, in the sport/Supercar world, most of them actually sound good. I mean most are discussed just because they are turbocharged. Some NA don't sound that good (like the RC F) but it's ok just because they are NA, while most Turbo are said to sound like shit when they actually sound good (911 Turbo S and M3/M4 F8x coming now in my mind).
      Try to find really shitty Turbo Supercar sounds, you'll have a bad time.

      @chewingthehandlebars Před 9 lety +4

      You have a point that the 488 is the Italia equivalent, but Jethro does admit that. His argument is that previously when Ferrari has updated this platform (360, 430, 458) the improvement has been so substantial that the new model was even better than the Speciale spec of the predecessor. In this case the numbers are better but the experience isn't, in his opinion. I wouldn't mind if someone offered the keys for a test drive though!

    • @Zepherian
      @Zepherian Před 9 lety +24

      Hunter Folan It's actually a low range supercar in the ferrari lineup, there's the F12 with 730hp and the FF putting out more or less this hp with all wheel drive (of sorts). And of course high end these days means 1k hp. It's not that insane, a Porsche 911 turbo is pushing 550hp with much better traction and 4v4. Probably faster than this thing at half the price or something. And you have sedans pushing nearly this hp, and of course electric 5 seaters almost hitting 700hp. When the horsepower wars supposedly ended i think someone forgot to send the memo to the engineers.

    I think it was wrong to compare the 488 GTB to the F40 & the Speciale. Each generation of the 8 cylinder Ferraris has a high performance car...360 Challenge Straddle, 430 Scuderia, & 458 Speciale which are not in the same category as the GTB. this car should be tested against the 458 Italia which it replaces. I'm sure I don't need to even say why its wrong to compare it to the F40.

    So as we all know, CZcams is a place where we kind of share our opinions in the comment section. Since I think that things grow by sharing, here's mine, if you'd like to read it (if don't, don't bother) :
    So, Jethro, not the worst day at work ever, eh?
    Anyway, let's set back to the F40. The F40 was some kind of challenge made to see how many horsepowers its wheels could put down, on a 1100kg diet. It turned out they could put out quite a lot of power (and even more, officiously). Everyone who gets behind this car's wheel seems to have the time of their life.
    Since this car, we've seen the V8 mid engined Ferraris from the 348, first Ferrari produced "Enzo Ferrari Post Mortem", also considered as "Ferrari's worst car ever" (I own one, and have driven several recent Ferrari s, and I think it is a relatively sensational car). We've then had the 355, judged as "the best car in the world" back in the day. The 360 Modena was a leap forward in terms of technology. It was the first "reliable and usable" V8 Ferrari, and it had a plus in its second gen F1 gearbox. The F430 was, according to me, the last real one. It was still available with the proper manual gearbox, had a wonderful chassis, e-diff, engine, the interior was getting better (not 458 quality, but still much, much better than a 360). The 458, which is one of the rare V8 Ferrari s I haven't driven, looks like a wonderful car to drive, but it looks like it is losing more and more of its innocence. The car is doing more and more for the driving, which doesn't involve you as much as the other cars used to. The 488 is just getting worse ! Apparently, as explained in the video, if you want to oversteer, but you don't know how to, it does it all for you. When I oversteer, I like to do it all myself, it is so much more rewarding !
    Last thing :
    The sounds used to be very bad. On the 308 and 328, the engines sounded like 4 cylinders. The 348, unless you put a stainless straight on it, didn't sound much better (just for the story, there was a very rare optional extra on the 348 which is a Ferrari Factory Stainless Steel Exhaust, which the first owner of my copy had the wonderful idea to fit. Very few of them were fitted with this extra). The 355, 360 and F430 all sounded amazing. Then came out the 458, and everyone said it sounded amazing. I don't... It sounds like a very well tuned 4 cylinder, it doesn't have that high formula one racer pitch the other ones used to have. And once more, the 488 isn't doing any better.
    Basically, Ferrari is being more and more user friendly. This isn't a good thing. It used to be a brand that addressed only to people who have a driving know how. Cars in which you got in and couldn't even drive if you didn't know how to DRIVE A FERRARI. Unfortunately, this good era is well over, now their latest cars are doing all the work for you.
    Greetings from France,
    Nico

    The addition of 160 lb/ft of torque is huge. Torque is a number that most don't seem to care about, or understand. It's what allows you to pull away without thinking about downshifting. This alone will take seconds (not tenths) off of lap times. And all that is provided by those turbochargers.

    • @Vethursan1
      @Vethursan1 Před 7 lety +7

      No sir, power/weight ratio is what makes a car accelerate quicker and reach higher top speeds. Torque is propably the most overrated specification when talkning about cars. It's true that torque is a twisting force that is responsible for making a vehicle move. However, power is defined by this formula:
      *P* *=* *ω* *** *M*
      Which means that the greater the RPM's (ω, symbol for radians/sec) and the greater the torque (M), the more horsepower you'll have. In other words, it's work done over time a.k.a torque done over time. Think about it this way. If a car makes 300 Nm (221 ft lb) and redlines at 1000 RPM, it's making about 43 HP. Now, if you have another vehicle with the same weight, body and torque, but instead with a redline of 9000 RPM, your engine will produce 300 Nm (221 ft lb) 9 times as much in the same period of time as the other engine. In other words, your engine produces a greater work done over time (aka horsepower). The engine would therefore make 385 HP (and if you divide 385 HP with 9, you'll end up with 43 HP as well).
      Torque is simply overrated, because people fail to realize that RPM's can be converted into torque, by using higher gear ratios (like an F1 car), which is why P/W ratio is the ultimate factor for acceleration and top speed (if we don't include drag)

      Vethursan + 1000!!!!.....well said and TOTALLY agree. Although the Bugatti Veyron and its variants are torque beasts plus you loose about 20% of the hp and ft. lbs. going to the driveshafs and transfer case on RWD/4WD-AWD cars....so while manufacturers state these numbers, they don't specify how much of the power(hp/ft. lbs) is really being put down on the asphalt....so take away bout 20% is a good average or have the car dyno tested to get a true hp/ft. lbs.

  • @turboman1505
    @turboman1505 Před 9 lety +5

    I think people are missing the point of this video. The 488 is the next step on from the 458. The latter of which being a car with as much soul as you can possibly get from any car. However they had the F40 in the video because that was what old school turbocharging was all about. Sure it may have had a tonne of lag but it still had character. If the 488 was done right, it should have been the new generation F40.

    Alright, Jethro Rocks! More Jethro EVO!

  • @Dgannt
    @Dgannt Před 9 lety +12

    Jethro, it doesn't sound as ferocious as Speciale or 458 because it only revs to 8000 and not 9000 rpm as the other cars. Also it's the replacement for 458 and not Speciale. There will be as sharper version of this later on, as you mentioned at the end.
    One important issue most car journalist miss is the actual reason why Ferrari had to go turbo. With 458 and later Speciale Ferrari had worlds highest hp/L output of any sports car with NA engine, even beating Porsche. That is engineering at very high level. But it was never enough as all the competition had to do was to add even bigger turbos or superchargers in their efforts to beat Ferrari.
    We all know who they are. I blame them for rubbing us of the wonderful NA engines in Ferrari cars and maybe even Porsche. I think it should be mentioned and not only the emissions which is always mentioned as the only reason.

      Actually it's not just the lower redline. The exhaust gas pressure is what drives the turbo so by the time they reach the exhaust tip they're moving a lot slower than they would in a naturally aspirated car. That's why you get that turbo growl even in very high-revving turbo engines like modern F1.

  • @1seipai
    @1seipai Před 8 lety +6

    There is absolutely no way, NO WAY at all that forced induction is going to be as great as naturally aspirated. The F50 is a better car than the F40. The 458 will be the last proper mid engine Ferrari. Apparently a Ferrari engineer was upset and said that if it were not for emissions etc there is no way they would have gone with forced induction. That sums it up. A 991 Turbo might be faster than a GT3 but that doesn't make it a better drivers' car.

    That s the review I wanted to see from CH. You cannot speak about Ferrari and turbo without considering the F40 (and the 288 GTO). Epic review thx for sharing! Those cars might be more exciting than the Speciale, that's an opinion. But they're not better. I'm talking about 50-100 years in the future here, when people look back then they'll say the Speciale was one of the last, and one of the absolute best.

      Italians characteristically have a different body type and build than the rest of the world, a lot of peoples qualms with older Ferraris is the driving position, but it is just the way the Italian designers felt comfortable in the car themselves.

    What an unfair analysis of the 488, you said it yourself it replaces the 458, how is it comparatively to the 458? Because when they make a 488 Scuderia or Speciale, then you can compare it to that. This didnt replace the Speciale it replaced the 458.
