Ferrari 488 GTB vs Porsche 911 Turbo S: turbo supercars fight it out

  • The Ferrari 488 GTB is the first turbocharged, mid-engine Ferrari since the legendary F40 in the 80's. That is a lot of pressure for a new supercar to live up to, but the Fezzer shone through in our first drive in Italy.
    So, what else could we do but pit it against the incredibly fast Porsche 911 Turbo S? The Ferrari might be less practical and more expensive, but its performance can easily give the 911 a run for its money!
    Watch the video to see Steve Sutcliffe and road test editor James Disdale take to the bendy British B roads right here...

      I think that most people with a 488GTB have a daily car like a Range Rover or Porsche 911. The Ferrari is a weekend car as you've suggested whereas the 911 can be used daily. However, the Ferrari offers more thrills and looks way better.

      So I guess the motto didn't scare you. I assume as an engineer you feel brave enough to buy three 911's as long as you can fix all the problems yourself. If you get tired of that, sell all 3 and buy a real sports car, a Ferrari. The repairs will end and you only smile :)

    • @NuclearGrizzly

      Fast Er
      My '73 is heavily modified and still reliable. My '97 Turbo S has nearly 200k on the clock and never left me stranded. My '15 Turbo S has also been fantastic. I had a '11 Turbo S that was OK. But of course not nearly as bad as anything ever made in Italy. Unlike Ferrari Porsche takes care of recalls as soon as there is a problem. Unlike Ferrari that took years to admit that their 458 occasionally would burst into flames. I owned a 360...or as i knew it the money pit. It was beautiful garbage. I've lost track of how many times I've picked up or dropped off my former business partner at the Ferrari dealership (in my 911 of course) for a repair on his POS 458. This is his second 458 and both have been beautiful garbage. I see my mechanic once a year. I see his every couple of months.
      And each time I hear "If you can afford the car you can afford the repairs and maintenance".

      @Aykut I still have all three of my 911's. In these past 4 years I have had zero break downs and only regular maintenance. The only thing major was that I had to clean the SAI on the '97. Something that has to be done every 20k-30k miles. In the past 4 years my cost of ownership for all three has probably been less than what a Ferrari owner pays for a single 3 year service.

It's not exactly lag, it's more like when you ask for more than the motor can give on its own, the turbos make it very plain that there's plenty of boost available, in the language of violence.

We need to praise more US cars to actually get more from our cars in future.

So you make cheap cars in USA that works great no doubt but you are so far off on anything in EU that`s scary.. The reason for this is that no company has the balls to go against the American ppl and start to make expensive cars of course this means more expensive cars and thats where the Achilles heel is...

      Im American and Id rather have a 488 than a C7 Z06. You gotta think about it, a Corvette is worth a lot of money. Especially a Z06 which can be what around $80K-$90K. But a lot of people can acquire a Corvette with a lot of hard work and a good paying job. You dont have to be rich to get one basically. Now a Ferrari on the hand which costs $200K-$300K, you gotta be rich and even for most mid class people that would be too far outta reach or just out of the budget. You might be able to get an older Ferrari but a newer one would cost a lot plus all the expenses after buying it. I agree that the Z06 is a world class supercar for performance but if someone gave me the option between the two id take the 488. If it was my money and i was making a decent amount id get a Vette or a Viper. If was filthy rich id get them all haha!

And something that is special and makes them feel special when driving it. Not a car that looks like any other of the 10-12 models that most can't see the difference between them. And a modern sports car that has such a harsh ride in 2016? Sure it can be used daily. For 2 days before your back gives up.

    • @chele089
      @chele089 Před 8 lety +8

      It might not have the wow factor when you look at it. But after driving them back to back you will have your wow-factor handed to you by the Turbos speed.

    • @MNMaveRick
      @MNMaveRick Před 8 lety +1

      Which turbo? They are both turbos, which means neither will ever sound as good as a normally aspirated engine and a Porsche 6 cylinder will never sound like a Ferrari, even the subdued turbo. They both perform great, so it comes down to wow factor and a Ferrari never has its wow factor handed to it, while the 911 continues to be the same stretched out Beatle it has always been.

    • @chele089
      @chele089 Před 8 lety +7

      Rick Pihl Well one of these cars is actually called 'Turbo' so it is obvious which car I'm reffering to. Besides that, the Porsche is faster than the Ferrari in every measurable instance. Objectively the Porsche is the better car. If you base your car buying decision soley on looks and sound you just buy to show off. If thats the case, the Ferrari will definatly fit you better. I'm not saying the Ferrari is slow, or even a bad car because it is simply not. But the Porsche is just faster.

    • @MNMaveRick
      @MNMaveRick Před 8 lety +1

      To say the Porsche is somehow measurably faster is to count tenths of seconds that will never change the experience of the lighter feel of the Ferrari compared to the heavy feel of the 911. No real world test will favor either cars performance in any major way, it comes down to the driver in every case. Objectively, they are too close to call in performance and the difference is not enough to choose the ugly 911 over the Italian piece of art and yes, the sound makes all the difference in the world and the 911 sounds like a vacuum cleaner. I will say that the turbo has also ruined the Ferrari compared to the 458, but not nearly as much as how the turbo compromises the flat six.

    • @chele089
      @chele089 Před 8 lety +2

      Rick Pihl You're a little biased I think. The Porsche is not ugly but it doesn't try to be a beauty queen either. You're right, the Ferrari is pretty. But the Porsche follows one simple philosophy wich is form follows function. And if you think about it, that makes a lot of sense. Ever sat in a 911? The dropping hood in the front and the realtively big windows give such good visibility, especially on track. Also, Porsches all-wheel-drive system allows the 911 Turbo to reach up to its full potential come rain or shine. The Ferrari is a nice second car but the Porsche is a first car, one that one drives every day. You also gotta take into account that the Turbo is Porsches Grand Tourismo type 911, layed out for Autobahn comfort and sheer speed. If you want a raw car from Porsche, buy a GT3 (RS). And that one provides plenty of lovely sounds.

    The 488 GTB is so much more special than the Porsche that I could never take 911 Turbo S over it, altough I respect the engineering of the Turbo S very much. Porsche is a mainstream comany making few hundred thousands of cars every year, with Macans, Cayennes etc. They use Audi parts including engines, the Ferrari compared to this is a company from another planet. If I would be going to spend circa 250-300k euros on a car it has to make me feel very special so it's a 488 GTB for me.
