TheCarGuys have taken their sweet time delivering a full review of their long-term Ferrari 458 Italia - but 5 years later - let’s hope it’s worth it!
Bought new in March 2015, this is one of the last Ferrari 458 Italias, and it came with quite an incredible pearlescent Bianco Fuji triple-layer paint job. This then is a full review of this ‘daily Ferrari’ based on the personal experiences of TheCarGuys over 16,000 miles.
Is this the best modern Ferrari ever made? How reliable is a 458 Italia? What does it cost to service? How fast is it? What’s it like on a tight country road? How big the boot/trunk? What parts did Michael Schumacher help to design? What’s it been like driving this car for the past five years? All these questions and more will be answered in this week’s episode.
Apologies if during the driving sequences you noticed some sound degradation, we have tried to minimise this, but it was caused by a faulty mic.
    Thank you for watching

I have had my 458 Italia since November 2011(almost 9 years ). Purchased new. Covered 55 000 km (34 000miles). Multiple track days , 6th set of tyres, 2nd set of carbon ceramic discs , 5 sets of disc pads. Not a single glitch ever - not even rust!
Used as an alternate daily driver with a GT3
Performance is scintillating. In fact words can never describe what an epic car this is. I plan to keep her forever.

      Naren,
I admire your love of driving over the resale value of your car. You and I think alike and are different than most people. Glad to hear your 458 is reliable and did not rust since I am considering a 458. I bought a Cayman R new 8.5 yeats ago and now have 53,000 miles not a single problem. When I drove a 458 and then drove my Cayman R immediatly afterwards I liked the heavier steering feel and more feedback with its hydraulic steering than I think the 458 gives. Also there was somehing different between the chassis feel or body structure between the 458 and my Porsche. The Porsche seems more solid. Do you have the same experience in comparing your GT3 to the 458? Other than that I think the 458 is superior in very many ways.

I’m deciding on whether or not to buy a 458. My only concern is when it comes to the brakes. The car has 14,000 miles on it. Does this mean I’m going to have to replace the carbon ceramic discs shortly after buying the car (as I plan on daily driving it)? Maybe when it hits 15,000-17,000 miles? The Ferrari dealer said they’re good up to 60,000 miles, but my Aston had the same brakes and they needed to be replaced after it hit 30,000 miles (it already had 14,000 miles upon purchasing).

Would love one of these but there's still a list of things I'd get done:
-Manual conversion (EAG in San Antonio, Texas does them)
-Custom steering wheel, putting the horn, indicators, lights and wipers in their proper positions (horn in the middle, the others on stalks)
-HVAC area in a nicer material.
-Swap rubber switches for something more durable to avoid reversion (sticky switches)

    Hi guys
Just watched your five year 458 review. I am currently taking my 458 spider from the UK down to S France via Germany, Switzerland and Italy - no concerns about vans parked on road bridges or in lay-bys, just enjoy the driving!! Minimal motorway use. I do not find any pleasure in long motorway sections with this car. This is my second such car and I have committed to driving this one and ignore the miles!! You only live once so enjoy the ownership (my wife's instruction!). The car needs the "bendies" to enjoy its full potential, just like a sports bike. I agree with you regarding the radio but, being a biker, I am not used to having artificial audio. I much prefer to simply enjoy the driving experience and the exhaust notes so I never worry about radio channels or CD's. The brakes in the 488 do seem more effective. I concur regarding the indicators but have got used to their two modes of operation now. However, locating them sometimes in the middle of a roundabout can be fun unless you remain disciplined to leave your hands in the same grip position. In contradiction, I like that the gear shift paddles never move. They can always be located easily. And the luggage capacity for such a car. I am surprised at the amount of items I have managed to transport in my car at times. Currently, I have all five bags (available accessory) packed (2 behind seat, 3 in the boot) with items just to keep the car tidy while driving. You made no reference to the seats. Mine has the carbon racing seats which I find extremely supportive and comfortable even after hours of driving and they look the part for a car such as this. Simple and effective (no electric controls to go wrong) but just my opinion. For shorter people, they can provide a seating position too low but at 6ft, the height suits me perfectly. P.s. No visible bodywork corrosion on my 2014 model.
    A very satisfied 458 owner.

Very good review. Had the same car 62 plate 3 coat white with black roof (makes car look lower) and mine had black wheels with black skirts. I loved the car. Only peave was I left it outside in winter and in morning the clocks steamed up and a few lights erroneously came on and off like a cheap village disco. My car had a slurey upcharge on the manual gearbox but pukka on downshifts - tbh the Speciale I had still had the slight gearbox glitch although dialled out a bit.... Nice looking buggy mind and interior is very underdone and so much the better for it !! Ps I never figured out how to get the various screens (and sat nav was unfathomable) to flick between screens as they were so fiddly - but I'm 57!! Best button on the car the bumpy road one - always used it unless on French Motorways !
Ps so right on the indicator hokey cokey - even worse was the high beam light just over a thumbs width away from being able to turn on off quickly when car approaching you Grr!!!

The throttle is helped by using bumpy road mode and I find the breaks are improving over time (I now have 20K on the clock) - but far behind ceramics on my last Aston. If I could change something though, it would be the wing mirrors - they are far too wide and easy to knock (and near impossible to repair...).

I’m thinking of buying a 458. I just sold my Aston Martin db9. What do you mean by the brakes being far behind the Aston? I was told the brakes on the Ferrari far more durable and longer lasting than Aston’s. Is this true? Or are they about the same?

    • @Gavin-oq5tt
      @Gavin-oq5tt Před rokem

@@Aksh3 I was referring to the carbon brakes I had on my V12 Vantage compared to the carbon brakes on the Ferrari 458 Italia. With the Ferrari, they need to be warm to work well, where as the Aston seemed always to perform strongly from cold. Once they are at temperature the Ferraris are very good (although now owning a 458 Speciale, I think these have more feel). I cannot comment on the longevity - but no issues with any so far...

These are brilliant, test drove a 458 spider in Italy and it is one of the best cars ever. I agree with the exhaust bark, driving it at slower speeds was quite annoying exhaust sound - not far off from when you have a car that your muffler goes out on and you are trying to drive it gently so it will not wake up the neighborhood. My color of choice will be the TDF blue.

I Haven't liked Ferraris design so much since this car, i always preferred the classic shape of the 360/430 and they still could be had with a proper gearbox, these 458's were the beginning of the cars that didn't make me want a ferrari as much as wanted the older cars...still wouldn't say no lol thanks guys

  • @FerrariCollector87

I found out that early 458's have this "pop" sound once you accelerate in neutral and the Rev goes down, I guess the ones that make that noise are from 2009 to 2011, after that they updated the ECU and they don't pop anymore... You can see the comparison here on CZcams... And Bianco Fuji is absolutely gorgeous in this particular model. I have an 1/43 Spider model in Bianco Fuji and red interior, just perfect. congrats on the car!

Great video! I am trying to decide between a 355 and 458. I think both are still at a reasonable price point to hold their value or even increase (depending on mileage added). This will be my 4th Ferrari. If you had to choose only one, which would you pick? Assume Berlinetta for either car, gated shifter for the 355 (obviously). Thanks for all the great content!

5:33 Where's the dip stick? 😉 It's integrated into the oil refill lid. You unscrew the lid, lift it off and thus you pull out the dip stick which is attached to the lid. You have to check the oil while it's warm and with the engine running, because it has a dry sump lubrication which needs the oil pump being activated.
17:10 The indicator buttons are confusing. Pressing them shortly will make the indicator blink constantly while pressing the buttons for longer will make the indicators blink three times. (Pressing short = blinking long, pressing long = blinking short. Unlogical!). And the indicator lights are not only just behind the steering wheel but also quite covered by the rim of the rev counter.
But it is a great car. I love it and I probably will never sell it.
