- Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD was a highly rated lens that received an upgrade a couple years ago with the G2 version of the same lens. While G2 is definitely more polished and perfected, the image quality is quite similar. At half the price of the G2, the G1 lens is still a great pick for those looking to get a great lens at a great price.
Best review of both, and on this review I’ve made a bid on the G1. Thank you
I’m a pro photographer. The G1 is a gem. 10 years deep and never failed me!!!!
Thanks for the review it really helped alot 😊❤❤
I just did a comparable yesterday with the G1 I own and G2 I borrowed to compare, image quality is the same, so I'm satisfied to keep my G1 and invest in something else I really need
I don’t currently have any lenses for these focal lengths and I can’t figure out which lens is better to buy. So you can avoid overpaying for the second generation?
great review bro, I'm currently thinking about buying 1 or the other
Great review. Thanks! Just bid on a used D750 that comes with the G1 lens and wanted to make sure I was right about the value of the lens as I decide what I’m willing to pay for the two together.
Nothing wrong with G1, especially if you're just getting it with a camera.
Great review!! I was looking for this comparison. Thx!
I own the old G1 and have no problem at all turning the hood around. It sits very good to travel. No reason for me to change it to the G2.
Good review, thanks! I purchased a brand new Canon 5Ds in November 2020 and I'm looking for a stabilized lens that is sharper than my version I 24-105 f/4L and after watching this I may pick up the Tamron g1 because they are half the price of the g2 on eBay.
hello, did you buy the G1, I want to know how is the performance.
Thank you for a very helpful review. I own the G1 version, and absolutely love it, and would have no wish to change it, particularly given your comparison. Unfortunately, the G1 version doesn't work with the Nikon Z FTZ adapter. There's not even a firmware update option from the Tamron Service Centre like one of their other G1 (15-30 f/2.8) lenses that I also own. So unfortunately it looks like I'll be selling it and buying a used G2 version.
Tamron service center told me that such problems are only on Nikons. The autofocus on mirrorless systems works on Canon R's series
Just a quick price update, the G2 is at Tristate Camera New York for $828 USA for Canon mount, $855 for Nikon mount. Both are brand new lens.
For the U.S. version? Beware of the International model pricing. It's easy to find them for $700-900, but often they are not U.S. version, which means, no Tamron warranty, and worse, if it breaks, Tamron will not repair it even if you pay them.
@@Antonpug Did not know that, thanks for the heads up, will consider that for sure. If you called them and asked them, do you think they would tell you the truth? Have you ever had dealings with Tristate? Perhaps dealing with B&H photo might be a better option.
@@johntinker3457 I haven't bought anything from Tri-State before, but I've seen their offerings and they appeared to be black market. If you ask, usually the vendor will disclose whether it's a U.S. item or black market. I've previously had issues though where I've bought items even from "reputable" merchants like Abe's of Maine and they turned out to be black market. Usually, if it's a new item and the price seems too good to be true, it probably is :)
@@Antonpug can they fix dust and fungus inside? I have a UV filter stuck on the front as well...
Sir can i ask about the G1 this lens is good for portrait for 6dmark ii and eos r thankyou so much
Curious did you use it on a mirrorless camera?...asking cause I Am thinking of buying the older lens and I have a mirrorless camera
I kinda late to the convo, but is the g1's af noisey? I have a g1 28-75 and it's unusably loud.
what's the purpose of the lens hood cause mines came with one but i don't know where it went but what's the purpose of that
That's weird, the hood on my g1 definitely clips on backwards securely
yep mine too!
Same
I just want to buy a nice lens with a fast auto focus and have vc and my pictures come out beautiful
Hi, great video, I have a quick question though. It the g1 just known as the Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 because I cant find anyone on ebay with g1 in its name.
Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 is G1, it generally doesn't have G1 in the name :)
i want to try the g2 and i heard it's a good 24-70 and u want to get one for my canon 80d i don't care who is out doing the other one i just want me a good 24-70 and i heard the tamron is great so i want to get one so is the lens picture quality is great
Thanks or sharing...I also have the Tamron 24-70mm D1 and I'm happy with it on my Nikon D750... I don't think the exta money is worth it! :)h
Would also be interesting, on which kind of camera you tested the Lenses, there is definitely a difference in optical Performance, if you use a Camera with a 16mp Sensor then a Camera with a 45mp Sensor. Or a camera with a Full Frame sonsor then a Camera with Cropped Sensor. - I Tested the Tamron 24-70 2.8 AF without own motor against the Tamron 24-70 2.8 g1 On a Nikon d7000 and a Nikon d850. - On the Nikon d7000 with 16mp there was absolute no difference. on the Nikon d850 with 45mp it was like Night and Day ..
Nikon D850
Is the VR significantly better? Or just a little bit?
I didn't notice a huge difference in VR, but there was some. The new one is smoother.
I wish you would show more comparison images especially since everyone says G1 is soft 2.8 until f/5 onwards vs G1 being sharp throughout all focal lengths. That would have been more useful imo.
Thanks though
I haven't noticed that, not under normal conditions. If you're pixel-peeping, *maybe* there is some softness, but overall, the image quality is very, very similar.
What about 70-200 g1 vs g2 ? Will be using it on Nikon D810
G2 hands down!
compare on f8 ? CMON!
There other reviews out there that find the Tamron sharper than the Nikon.
How does this compare to sigma 18-35 or 24-70?
I haven't personally tested the Sigma, but from the reports I've seen, very similar! A matter of preference. I've heard Sigma can develop focus issues with age though.
@@Antonpug it has focus issues at 3 months use...
@@rune-photo The new one? I've had mine for a little while now and it's my favorite lens hands down. Have you tried calibrating?
Tamron all the way
is that fit to my nikon z50?
If you have the ftz mount and updated the firmware. I have the z6.
4:27 My G1 hood is reversible, and snaps into position.
So your main reason on keeping the G2 is the lens hood clicking on backwards and that justifies the price difference...
Not at all - I found that the focus is faster and sharper and the build is more solid with the G2.
wtf yes you can.. i literally have the hood lens on the g1 on reverse all the time
Alexis Velez No need to be rude, first of all. Second, yes, you can place it in the reverse direction, but it does not snap in place, according to Tamron’s own documentation is wasn’t designed for that use. 🤷🏼♂️
@@Antonpug Mine does snap into place. Did you place it the same angle but backwards? The top and bottom petal of the hood should be on the side when you snap it.
@@Antonpug Sitting her with my lens hood reversed and snapped into place like all my other Tamron and Canon lenses, so...................
The G1 hood does click into place reversed. Yours is defective.
He did say he picked it up second hand!
Don't waist your money by buying the G2 .. in term of quality there is no difference at all .. concerning the price there is huge difference .. oh yes, G2 looks a bit female than the G1 which looks a strong male .. that's all .. lol
thanks, you just saved me a lot of money.
@@MuhammadIbrahim-fq8ho really?
lens "looks a bit female"?? what? ffs what happened with nowadays people
