    Don't let extreme pixel peeping like this dissuade you from buying this lens, it is absolutely fantastic and is probably one of the best value lenses you could ever buy. The fact that it rivals Canon and Nikon name brand lenses in day to day use sharpness and at half the price should be more than enough reason to buy it. If you have the money to shell out, by all means get the name brand if you want, because they are better in their own rights, but those benefits will be situational at best. For the average photographer, working or enthusiast, this lens is a solid buy that you will never regret.

    From my vantage point, the bokeh quality on Tamron lenses stand toe-to-toe with the best of the best from Canon and Sony's full-frame line up. Soooo buttery smooth.

    A few weeks back my 24-105 Sigma lens fell to the ground so it needed to be repaired. And so, I went on looking for a new lens, which the 24-70 came to be a good option. I first thought to buy the Canon version, because, it's Canon. But, after I went to the local camera shop, I bought this one instead. The retailer told me that it was (with the cashback action) about 500 euro cheaper and the focussing was better then that of Canon, so yeah I was sold then. I immediatly used it, because I had an event to shoot. Still didn't really use it in the dark though. But now I got a 2.8 12mm, 2.8 24-70 mm and a 2.8 70-200 mm lens, so I am obsessed clearly. I have shot quite a lot of shots already and a few things are notisable. The colours are quite good. The sharpness can be a bit better. The bokeh is very nice. It's fucking silent, it's a nice lens to touch. It's quite huge to. But oh well, I am happy with it, the 24-105 is still in the shop, but probally will be in my bag after that forever, because this is going to be my all around lens now. Only changing when I need more wide angle or zoom. Though still, because I have experience now, I do wonder what your opinion was, so I gonna watch this video now :)

    It won more awards in its category than Canon, Nikon, and Sigma combined... Even the vaunted Lucie Tech award. For the money it's still the best 24-70 you can purchase. Everything else will be double the price with at most a 10% benefit. The fact that you can use the Tap-In Console to reprogram the VC unit to be better for video purposes is a little known benefit. Ditto being able to change the manual focus attenuation.

    Hi Chris, I just wanted to let you know that out of all the CZcams Tutorials and reviews I find yours to be the most informative and easiest to follow and because of this I bought the 6D Camera and then made sure ( by watching your reviews and tutorials ) that I wouldn`t be wasting my money on lenses that wouldn`t work as well and that i didn`t spend lots of money on lenses I didn`t need so now i have the perfect kit with my Canon 550D and my newly acquired Canon 6D. I am feeling 100% confident in using them all and very comfortable in using them, (unlike when I purchased the Canon 7D which I never did quite master and lost interest in almost immediately, which resulted in my leaving it in the bag and it never saw the light of day - Luckily I bought it second hand for $400 Australian so I never lost too much money). I now have the 85mm f1.8 ( which I bought before i bought the 6D) as I work in low light and concert environments a lot so I quickly learned I needed a Camera that would knock the results out of the ball park. So now the combination of 550D and 6D accompanied with the 105 f4 lens, my trusty 50mm 1.8 ( will be purchasing a 50mm 1.2 when I can afford to) 85mm f1.8 and my Tamron 200mm F2.8 (which all work on the 550D equally as well ) I know I am now in sync with my needs .. I cannot thankyou enough you saved me time and money and I continually watch your videos when I need to refresh my memory on advice you have given .. THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU

    • @rainermenes5921
      @rainermenes5921 Před 5 lety +2

      First of all I am using it on a EOS 6D and I never had a real fatal focus miss even in bad light or good light at any focal length. Of cause no lens gives you 100% hit rate. I have used it at night, in churches and other occasions which are similar to weddings. From my point of view this lens is good for that. How this lens performs on other cameras or even other systems like Nikon I can't comment. I can only say compared to my experience with Sigma lenses on Canon cameras this Tamron lens is as good as my other Canon lenses in the AF department. I have used a Sigma 18-35 F1.8 on a 7D MKII and the lens is sharp but it sometimes misses the focus especially on faces. Sadly some great shoots were unusable because of missed focus. The Tamron 24-70 G2 doesn't show this issue.

    • @Exsomos
      @Exsomos Před 5 lety

      I have the 6d2 and the tamron g2. I love it. What you will need if you get the G2, unfortunately is Tamrons Tap-in consul to do some micro adjustments. It makes a huge difference with the G2. If you dont have it, try using the 6d2's DPAF and that way your guaranteed to get perfect focus. Youll see the difference if you try it. The VC and sharpness at f3.2-f3.5 and above is great, and it really isnt that bad real world at f2.8. And if it is that important for someone's shot to be razor sharp at f2.8, then they should be using primes anyways.

      Focus is going to vary depending on a lot of things but I've not had any problems in fairly low (concert) lighting. According to several channels that went into in-depth comparisons between this lens and the Canon, this is really, really close in sharpness. Reasonably the same. Since I don't have the Canon, I have not compared them personally. But it seems close enough to want a couple hundred extra bucks in my pocket. I love the contrast and color of the Tamron lenses. Even their cheaper lenses look really nice. But that's just my opinion.
      I don't recall... does the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 have IS? This does. The zoom and focus rings are reversed, as Tamron does, but I'm used to that now.

Like Chris says. Wide open it lacks sharpness at the long end but even f3. 2 shows huge improvements at the long end. Stella at 24mm. IS is fantastic and very useful for stills and video. Build quality is very professional. Overall. For the price it's very good value.

    You said the most demanding professional will want a little more sharpness, but you didn't offer any ways to get that. I have compared this lens to it's Canon L series equivalent and to the Sigma Art series and based on numerous reviews the differences between this and the much pricier L series are negligible. The Tamron out-performs the Canon in some areas and seems to generally outperform the Sigma. So, being in the market for a professional 24 - 70 mm f2.8 I remain slightly unsure, however I am strongly leaning toward the Tamron.

    I have this lens for more than 6 months and use it with 5D mark IV. it's solid lens but have some issues. I can only agree with all Christopher's findings. It could be sharper. Also distortion is not on pair with original Canon 24-70. Lately auto focus became noisier in my unit and makes high pitch sound in some situations but works fine though. Will have to sent it for inspection and maybe repair. Also it's quite picky when it comes to screw filters. With most filters vignetting is amplified to such a extend that it's unusable combination.

    • @rgaik11
      @rgaik11 Před 5 lety

      I have never dropped this lens. I think it has started four maybe five months after I bought it. It's noticeable only when focusing from close to far object or infinity. As long as I focus within close distance I can't hear it. This is not a big problem for me since I don't use it for video. If you can afford go for native lens but if money is an issue this Tamron will do the job.

    I have this lens and have been thinking if i did right to bought it and after watching this video i can agree every bit of the information in it.
    I deeply regret of buying my Tamron 24-70mm G2 lens as it has failed me in quite a few occasions, and let's not forget that you are pretty much unable to use filters in front of it because the corners get black just after you but normal circular polarizer filter on.
    You can use polarizer, but only by itself, no protection or nd filters at the same time.
    But anyways, your lens review are the best! I just should have waited until you have made this review before buying the lens 😂

      (camera i use is Canon 5d mk4)
      Focusing at low light has sometimes given me that what is happening feeling, and i was little too optimistic about the lens's images quality when i bought it.
      But i am sure that most of the cases this lens will give you good photos.
      If the Canon ef 24-70mm L mk2 had a IS i would go for that for sure, even if it is pricey as he*l
      What i like about this lens is the image stabilizer, even if it doesn't can do miracles while you take videos.
      As i am not that rich that i could use Lee filters, i mostly use screw on filters that doesn't work so well with it because of the design of the lens.
      I like to have 24-70mm lens that i could use wide open and not to drop it down around f4 or f5.6.
      Because you sometimes need all the light you can get, as i usually don't use flash.
      And this lens haven't given me the 'feeling' in photos that would take me over the issues that i have with the lens.
      (Sigma 50mm Art can do that, even when the auto focus sucks)
      I am not pleased at this Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 g2 lens, but as i said, i am pretty sure that it will deliver good enough photos if you are not that picky about things like I am :).
      I hope this will help you at least a little. Have a great weekend!

    I am planning to get this lens, I have the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and even do it does not have VC the lens is amazing, light and sharp! I only pay $168.00 US Dlls on ebay for it, but I still want this one and I am going back and forth watching this review and the one you made for the 28 - 75mm and if I compared both reviews it seems to me that you actually give the 28 75 a better image rating, I know that this lens is better on every other way, should I get this one or stay with my tamron 28 -75mm f2.8?

    This lens`s leap in quality at apertures of 4 and smaller really makes me lean toward getting a good copy of something like the Sigma 24-105 f4. A good copy of one of those has great quality wide open at f4, and gives the extra range.

      I have the 6D Mii and bought this lens. I spent a long time doing a lot of research on the sigma, canon mii and this tamron. I ended up with the Tamron G2. It has been great. The big thing that pushed me to this Tamron was 1 the cost, and 2 the VC. Most of the reviews that i read on the G2 all stated that stopped down to even f3.2 to f4, that the Tamron was SHARPER than the canon Mii. But there is one thing that you dont see mentioned in a lot of the reviews of the G2, you really really need to get the Tamron Tap-in consul. Micro adjustments are pretty much a must on the tamron if you want the performance. You can use the DPAF of the 6dMii to get guaranteed sharp shots out of the g2, but if you are a TTL focuser then you'll need to do the micro focus adjustments to get razor sharp shots out of the g2. i bought mine on ebay for $900 new, and its been great. After micro adjustments and the money i saved, im very satisfied. Nothing wrong with the canon ii, at all, but i would personally benefit from the image stabilization on the G2 and the $700 or so extra money in pocket in comparison to getting the canon. Every other lens i have is a canon, this is my only non canon. I have the 70-200 2.8 Mii and some other primes, so trust me, i thought very very hard about the purchase. Sigma didnt make the cut with their ART version... dont waste your time on that one.
      Good luck with your research.

    Hey Christopher, I`ve been subscribed for a while and am a big fan, you are the best source for lenses I have found on CZcams :)
    Could you maybe do a video on lenses with really fast focusing motors? As a videographer rather than a photographer I ran into trouble with several lenses I purchased because the autofocus (on which I rely most of the time) was too slow and would not pick up on for example a product I was holding up (very frequent problem). So far the only lens that mostly satisfied me was the new Canon 18-55mm Kit Lense, but that has a really bad apature. Now I am running the Canon EF-S 35mm IS STM Macro, and even though that lense is very new and has STM it`s still slow to me :`D

      +German Survivalist Keep in mind that a fast focus motor is no good without the proper camera to utilize it :P The Samsung 18-200 f/3.5-f/6.3 has one of the fastest focus motors ever (it uses a voice coil motor), but the PDAF in the cameras struggle to pick where to focus with it and move slowly through the range because it isn't very bright or very sharp, especially at 200mm. It's a real pity it is so soft at 200 and that the cameras don't handle it well, because it is a very well built lens with a heavy price tag for an 18-200. Sometimes the camera will jump it's focus to a different spot, and it goes almost instantly. It's a real shame Samsung didn't put a little more effort into the firmware handling for this particular lens, and it's sharpness at 200, it's actually pretty decent at 18. Some cameras will also have settings for how quickly they are willing to shift focus to a new object vs. tracking the previous one. Canon is known for a nice slow AF with their dual pixel cameras, check if you can adjust that speed on your camera (some cameras have a separate focus speed setting for video). Ultimately though, video shooters often need to resort to manual focus. STM is a stepper motor, their advantages are accuracy and cheapness of manufacturing, not so much speed. My fastest focusing Canon lenses are all long lenses, Canon 400 f/5.6, Canon 400 f/2.8, Sigma 180 Macro. Among the Canon lenses, look for lenses with USM motors, almost any of them should be a big step up from the STM motor.

    • @ArikGST
      @ArikGST Před 5 lety

      I switched to the Canon t7i (800d) literally yesterday and it increased the focus speed and accuracy in comparison to my old t5i (700d) and it`s now bearable. I might have to pick up the newer EF-S 18-135 IS USM or EF 70-300 IS II USM, both of which work with Nano USM which seems to be the best focusing motor at the moment according to the tests I`ve seen by Christopher. Too bad they both have fairly bad apature. I am fairly limited in my budget, otherwise I would go for one of the newer L lenses like the EF 24-105 4L IS II USM, but that lense is more expensive than my t7i and my lense were combined (I bought both used).
      I think for now I`ll be ok with my setup as the new body definitly decreased the problem.

      +Darc 1027 Anything really wide with low distortion. The Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC either the original or G2 version should be pretty great for that. If you need to also do exteriors of taller buildings, maybe consider picking up a tilt shift lens. The Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D lens is a nice option, downsides are that it has no AF and no stabilization, also is less flexible than the Tamron zoom. Upsides are.... it is WIDE, and still has low distortion. 12mm is a lot wider than 15mm than most people realize.

    It would be helpful to use the same cameras when comparing lenses of the same class. For the Tamron you used 42mp and 20mp cameras whereas for the Sigma 24-70mm DG OS HSM you only used the 42mp camera. Also, it would be great if you took stills at the same location or objects to compare bokeh and image quality in the real world. This way we can compare lenses side by side in real world scenarios as opposed to just charts, which are also great for many parameters, but not for bokeh and colors.

      You're wrong, unfortunately. Crop factor comes into play regarding f-stops, too. In terms of final results, a picture taken with an aps-c (crop factor of 1.5x) camera that is taken with these settings:
      *100mm f4 ISO100*
      ...will look the same as an image taken with a full frame camera with these settings:
      *150mm f6 ISO225* (though of course no such ISO setting exists, the closest would be 200 or 250)

    • @s87343jim
      @s87343jim Před 5 lety +2

      You can not only apply the crop factor on the focus length without also do it on the aperture, otherwise the math doesn't add up.
      Also I think what Chris is talking about is assumed the distance between you and the subject doesn't change and the size of the subject you photograph doesn't change.

    • @iMannyR
      @iMannyR Před 5 lety +3

      You're technically correct, but you have to take into account that you will have to step back to recompose with a crop sensor to get the same field of view as with a full frame sensor. The depth of field is a function of distance to the subject. This is why we say that you should also multiply the aperture by the crop factor, because the depth of field will change as you step back to recompose (you are further from the subject). But yes, and F2.8 lens is an F2.8 lens regardless of sensor size.
