  • Today I am going over a video by Tara, working with her young horse Bella. I will be giving my point of view on the methods used, as well as giving the horse in this video a voice. Don't blindly follow what someone says, even if they are a "professional" or "have YEARS of experience". Use your own critical thinking skills and question the tools, the method, and the trainers you see, listen to, and work with.
    I am using all footage under the Fair Use Act for criticism and educational purposes, and do not wish for anyone to send hateful messages to the original poster. I hope to spread awareness about this type of unnecessary and dangerous practice that is so prevalent in the training world and give animals a better life. Let me know what you think of it, and what you would like to see next time! Until then, try to Stay Pawsitive :3

    That poor horse is so dang confused. She's so patient and willing. She's trying SO HARD to understand what Tara wants. But even I can't tell what Tara wants. She pulls a hand one way, but is looking and leaning in the opposite direction, all while kicking and pulling on both reins. Saying "whoa" and "go" at the same time. Poor horse. She's certainly not fresh. She's frustrated and unhappy. $100,000 says I could have hopped on that sweet filly with one rein on a rope halter and had a quiet walk and jog around the arena without a single hiccup. And I'm nothing special. I am not some great rider. But this horse is EASY. You wanna see "fresh", Tara? Come see some real challenging horses I've worked with. This gentle filly isn't fresh.

    Tara’s videos are absolutely horrifying. Watching her on Farouk makes me so sad for him. She says whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa like a million times a minute. It’s very clear her horses do not respect her. Poor Farouk looks like he’s lost all the joy from his eyes. Like he’s a shell of his former self. I feel so bad for all her horses. She’s absolute awful. It’s very apparent she’s too heavy for her horses and she needs to teach her horses on the ground for a long time. She rushes all her “training”.

      20 percent is an absolute max weight for a MATURE horse to carry with a well fitting saddle. A 4yo should carry nowhere near this amount. The rider is heavy, her backside is spilling over the rear of the saddle causing the suspension system to "bottom out" at every stride. The saddle system(bua) is dependent on a lighter rider sitting centrally in the seat. In this case there will be enormous overload to trapezius and the loins with most likely bridging in the centre. Horse needs honest assessment by a vet and independent saddle fitter

      @@bonnieplattner3094 apparently not..this saddle was "fitted" to Apollo on a previous vid by the Bua rep. There appears to have been no adjustment to the horse .the only adjustment appears to be adjustment of springiness ( to rider preference) to the rear of the saddle. Mechanically the design is flawed and clearly inadvisable for heavy and large seated riders.

Bella is such an adorable horse and while I am not a horse owner, I could tell right away that Tara's backing of Bella is terrible and it is made worse by a horse owner who refuses to listen to criticism even from her own subscribers. Watching Shae's (Free Spirit Equestian) backing with Mushu, Shelby Dennis' backing of her horses especially Banksy, and Graeme's (Stable Horse Training) groundwork with Annie while looking at Tara's backing of Bella feels like night and day in the worst ways because the former three know how to train their horses with respect and care while with Tara we are seeing an adorable sweet horse get ruined before our very eyes. Watching Tara ride Bella vs watching Free Spirit Equestrian's first ride on Mushu (posted yesterday) is night and day. Shea is *so* kind and gentle with Mushu - she rides him with a loose rein and plans on riding him bitless in the coming weeks. Mushu seemed pretty content throughout the ride, or about as content as a horse being ridden for the ridden time can be. Comparing that with Tara's first ride on Bella - tight reins literally from the minute she sat on Bella's back and an overall unhappy horse 🙄
    I like that Shea's starting off in a bit before trying bitless - it takes the pressure off the horse's nose whilst they're still learning their rein cues. I wish more people tried their horses in both bits and bitless - some horses do better with a bit, some do better bitless but many people just don't give their horses a choice

The constant heavy-handed pulling on the bit, this side to that side is awful to watch. I have in the past gently suggested to start her sessions walking her on a loose rein allowing her to stretch fully through the back and repeat at the end of her lesson and also to ride her with softer hands and less constant tension on the rein which confuses Bella. The "saddle fitter" (I use the term loosely) needs to go back to saddle fitting school, the saddle may well be a correct fit for Bella, but its way to small for Tara. This may sound harsh, but this lady needs to either loose some weight, or stick to riding her friesian horse. The riders butt size is relative when fitting a saddle.

    Bella is just a few months shy or 4 years old. I wish she would ride her with a looser rein and not try and make her do drissage moves side stepping. If she’s bucking and refusing to move something is wrong with the horse or rider. Bella is just shy of 15.2 hands high.

    You know what I'd do with Bella. Take her back to the very basics as if she wasn't started under saddle yet. Do a lot of groundwork such as ground driving, in-hand dressage work, liberty horsemanship, and just some regular playing around so she can build up trust with humans. Teach her that it's okay to be a horse and allow her to say no to things. Then when she's older I'd start her with no bit, heck, maybe no bridle (bridleless is fun XD), this little horse needs a break from the mouth and face pressure. I think she'd do well with positive reinforcement too.
    I'd honestly recommend Tara to be lunged on a well educated horse without reins so she can actually get a proper feel of the horse, learn how to balance properly. I honestly think all horse people should do that if they can. I always see many equestrians use the reins way too much and the poor horses getting their mouths pulled on and the bit hitting their teeth or hitting the roof of their mouths.

  • @BismarcksOtto
    @BismarcksOtto Před rokem +45

    I'm another one of the people who has watched her videos for years, but watching her start Bella is increasingly like watching a train derail in slow motion. I manage a few minutes and then get so uncomfortable I often "fast-forward" through the rest. This pairing is an accident waiting to happen.
    I believe she is fundamentally in over her head and either doesn't realize it yet, or feels she cannot admit to it and deal with the consequences in the face of her big audience and the community she has built - nearly 60k subscribers, plus who knows how many paying channel members. What certainly also doesn't help is the large number of pure uninformed or equally limited-in-skill claquers in her comment sections that echo and reinforce her various assessments that blame any and all issues on the horse: "ooh, moody mare just like the one I once had!", "never been around horses but I have three kids so I know: this headstrong teenager just needs to learn that mom's in charge!" "thank you for explaining what's going on here, I have no doubt the two of you will come together in no time under your expert hands."...
    It's been many years since I quit horseback riding (I miss interacting with horses even more than the riding, which is likely the reason why I am bumming around the equine side of youtube as much as the parts of it that feature my various still "active" interest) and I've never ridden horses to the level that I was breaking in green horses myself, but even to to my "out of training" eye, there are fundamental issues plain to see that don't bode well:
    She is visibly uncomfortable, at times borderline scared when on Bella (compare that to how she looks when on her Frisian or even the at times skittish Arab) and it shows in ways that are utterly detrimental to teaining a young horse under saddle:
    - she has virtually no independent seat, so she is balancing with and on the reins in any situation where she feels she is losing control, so quite often. Her legs are all over the place, she seems to be at times almost unconscious to her weight shifting/distribution and is then confused/alarmed when Bella reacts to her weight aids over what aids she thinks she's (exclusively) giving with the reins.
    -both of the saddles she has tried on that horse are too small for her - she's basically sitting on the cantle, which (if not causing pain already, as we have no idea how well the saddles fit in the first place) I'd bet dollars to donuts will lead to Kissing Spines and all the related problems well before the horse is 10.
    - the horse is getting oversaturated with - most of the time conflicting - commands: legs are telling her one thing, reins another, weight yet another thing. On top of that you have the constant "base line" of verbal cues, which have actually been problematic long before the horse was started under saddle, because they are more often than not so badly-timed/imprecise that they might as well be mindless chatter. The cherry on top is when her husband joins in from the sidelines by randomly yelling the mare's name or vocalizing the same imprecise chatter-commands, because the horse is already so obviously not listening to a thing his wife wants from her that he feels compelled to add his voice in reinforcement.
    It's a sad situation, because I feel she genuinely cares for all of her animals and does not want to deliberately cause them any harm or lasting discomfort, but she is just not half the proficient rider she believes herself (or maybe even once used) to be.
    Everyone involved would doubtlessly profit if she gave Bella into professional hands for a couple of months to get her started, an then take a couple of lessons together with Bella once she takes back over. Judging from the standard of living on display, I doubt money would be an issue. If there is any substance to the rumors regarding the botched sale of her Arab though, fear of the "public reaction" to such a move could possibly be a deterrance.

      @@kathygreen288 let me preface this by telling you that I've come across this in the comment section of another reaction video of another horse trainer who critically discussed her handling of Bella. I'm not a subscriber to that trainer's channel channel, but I wager I got this specific video recommended by youtube since I am subscribed to Tara and regularly watch her videos. I think that was the case for quite a few people in that particular comment section as well.
      In any case: someone mentioned how "a couple of months ago, before she put him aside" (which must have been summer/fall last year, certainly before he was put out to pasture for the winter) Farouk was, for a period of time, up for sale locally. Other people chimed in that he apparently even showed up online (I think they specifically said on Ehorses) under his breeding name. People aparently took notice because Tara and her horses are known to anyone who's ever been on youtube in the last couple of years who has even a passing interest in horses. One commenter, who likely was from around where Tara lives judging from the videos they themselves had under their youtube profile, then mentioned they knew he was as good as sold until he failed the pre-purchase vet check. When asked about the attempted sale and failed vet check by people who knew her youtube channel, she apparently went to great lengths to pull/disappear any evidence that she ever attempted to sell the horse in the first place. Other commenters then said that since then, she apparently deletes any comments/blocks/shadow-bans people who ask about- or mention the attempted sale or inquire about Farouk's health.

He was stunning when she first got him, and by the time they finished that one season of endurance riding, he looked so ragged and thin. I know they can't be fat while doing endurance, but he'd lost his entire top line, no muscle to speak of. He looked like ulcers and pain could have both been in play, IMO. He has a sweet disposition and I think would be lucky to find a more knowledgeable (and smaller) rider. It's too bad he didn't pass the PPE. I wondered why she basically kicked him out and refused to even blanket him or brush him for a couple of months. I'm all for a horse having time off from work, but the other two weren't exactly doing anything either, and they got brushed and blanketed when it was cold/rainy, etc. Poor Farouk just got ignored. There's so much you can say about Tara in this video. I'm at 29:00 she's trying to slow down the horse, yet she hasn't bothered drawing the stirrups so they're constantly banging on the horses side, not only uncomfortable but probably to Bella that's Tara's similar cue to "go". I'm guessing she kept them down to keep the reins in place but it would be better to take the bridle off (which would take 3 seconds to do) and do it in a halter imo. I was always taught to put the stirrups up to stop them from banging on the side of the horse. Mixed messages for this poor horse all throughout the video. I've only left one comment on Tara's channel I believe, I was telling her that when I go out on a hack I often have my reins fully loose as it makes my horse more relaxed and I explained why this is. Her response was just along the lines of "I'm so glad you can do that with your horse". She's supposed to be training her horse, why can't she have the motivation to get her horse as relaxed and respond to the lightest cues as possible? Not to mention she goes out with other people, runs up right behind strange horses then complain when the strange horses try to kick her horse. I'm going on a rant sorry.

    I do agree with everything you say. I'm in the uk and learned to ride at a dressage yard but on experienced horses. This is very hard to watch for me and I personally think Bella would benefit from a lot of groundwork and no riding at this time. I don't object to a bit, but there is a way to introduce a bit and it's not this video! I also think she should be able to ride Bella with no bit initially. Anyhow there's a lot of stuff I think and unfortunately, Bella can't benefit from it. Sad.

    Bit late to the comments, but there is another new video from Tara showing Bella free-jumping in the manege - I wasn’t able to watch much of it as I was tensing up every time the horse ran to the rails of enclosure…stopping short of attempting to jump out! Also when passing Tara’s meek husband who was videoing, Bella was just repressing an urge to barge him or kick out, I’m sure of it 🫣 At rest, she was clearly over-stimulated, with heaving sides and hyper-focused. What is Tara doing to this gorgeous juvenile mare??😢

      @caobita Před 11 měsíci +2

      OMG.... poor Bella. If I tried free-jumping with a horse, I would only continue if the horse enjoys it. Had a Haflinger 15 years ago and he looooved free-jumping and jumping in general. I like to jump too, but only if the horse enjoys it, and neither would I jump with the horse too frequently nor very high. I don't see any sense in making a horse (free-)jump if it dislikes this type of exercise.

    Horrid.This should be classified under "horror movies". Most of it. So much talking and so much pressure. No understanding of horse feedback at all. From the young age with this poor filly.
    And all that hanging on the reins as if she were hanging on a cliff for dear life. I'm glad that filly still has her lower jaw. I'm not sure about her teeth though. Tara pulls on the reins so much the horse twists the neck backwards. And for NO reason.Horrifying.
    And that channel is so bloody posh. Some royal attitude vibes. So over-confident it's already harmful.
    Her horses are always accused of being nasty, stubborn, having a bad day, fresh...it's ridiculous. In reality, their horses are saints.

    I use a mounting block, could not get on from the ground to save my life. Although to be honest watching how the saddle moves when mounted from the ground I think it definitely is harder on the horse. I also do not think someone using a mounting block has any correlation to how they ride. Although I’m a pretty average rider at best. But anyway on this women’s training of Bella. She’s awful and has caused the problems with her hard hands and confusing signals.

    Way too many commands that the horse obviously doesn't know the meaning of. Then when she asks the horse to tr-ot from a canter, the horse keeps cantering and is not corrected for it! So now the horse probably believes tr-ot means canter! And to make it even worse, she says tr-ot many, many times, so she's just reinforcing that trot means to canter. Also, this person says whoa just to slow the horse down, and it drives me crazy. To me, when you say whoa, that means to STOP, and right NOW - not to just slow down. In an emergency situation, the horse needs to stop ASAP when you say whoa for the safety of both horse and handler. If I was this horse I would have thrown her off my back many times by now. It's amazing how much animals will put up with inconsistencies and suffer on. I feel sorry for this horse because she never gets relief from the bit, or from this woman's constant chatter that she does not understand. And this woman thinks she has soft hands? She mentioned that in the comments in another video, and anyone can see she has very heavy hands. So much so that she pulls one rein tight, and expects the horse to "walk on" when she's actually pulling the horse sideways, and then wonders why the horse won't walk a straight line! Wake up lady - the horse is terribly frustrated, and some day soon she will send you flying through the air. Learn to ride!

    The horse is doing pretty much exactly what the rider is (inadvertently) telling her. However, this is not what the rider wants. The lack of knowledge on biomechancis, and also what most of us are actually taught has a lot to answer for. Its always more noticeable on young or untrained horses where the natural reactions have not yet been beaten out of them.

Surely they could do something. Does your talk over video ,tara doesn't lunge, no patience, which is spot on get to tara. Bella is too small for tara. I am taking it very slow, maybe to slow according to some, but I think it is more important that my horse has fun with me. And for the moment Flicka and I are doing ground work (going backwards, hip target, walking over mats…). I was just wondering what you think about using positive reinforcement in horse training? That’s how I am teaching my horse ever since she was little, I also try to give her choices in the training. I am by no means perfect and I am pretty sure I make mistakes but I am getting help with an experienced trainer who backs horse wit +R. Have a nice day. And thx for the video.

I even bought a big teddy bear (100 cm) to be Flicka’s first rider, and when she used to that I think I ‘ll ask a girl (20 kilos) to sit on her. Don’t know when that will happen, I am taking my time. Flicka also finds it very strange if someone is standing on a chair beside her, she doesn’t give large signals, just going one step behind but that gives me information.
