I ride and canter two different horses with NO prep, No riding in a month or more and no proper warm up or slow controlled riding. This is when you see where a horse really is. If I did this all time it would not take long for both these horses to become unmanageable, resistance and dominant. Doing these short rides are good to see how you are doing and how good you and your horse know each other.
Part one of a three part series about cantering a horse in a rope halter. I ride Buddy and Mr T and have them canter while showing how to ride with one rein when you have two reins. I also talk about a horse being "on the bit" or "on the halter". I show contact and lose reins riding. When Buddy rears he is reacting to me not being clear, not warming him up properly and not being a clear strong leader. He does NOT buck when I do things better and right.
In part two I ride Mr. T, he is older and more riding time than Buddy, but he is much easier to get to move, not so good at getting him to stop or slow down.
In part three I ride Buddy, much younger, and likes to play, I am let him get away with little more since he was abused and neglected, so he tries to buck and rear, just like I say I am going to cause him to do.

My goodness Rick. Todays means of communication offers an outlet (not person to person) to those experiencing issues relating to poor mental health. It can be difficult and very trying being on the receiving end - so I’d like to say ‘well done you’ Rick.
And thank you once again for brightening up my day simply by watching the boys. Buddy Boy bucking and jumping - and ole Mr.T telling Buddy off by reminding him just whose really boss around here ha!ha!

This man is amazing... If everyone does some little things what he does, then people don't have problems anymore with their horses. Since 4 years ago I went riding like this.. Bitless, I paid attention to my helps, to my hands and legs, my body. I gave him al the freedom, thats what a horse needs, and that brought me so far.. Riding with a bit doesn't help you and your horse.. Riding bitless,, It's something that humanity ( a big part of ) does't understand.. The first horse riders had nothing no sadle , no bit , no halter.. People need to understand that you don't need it.. Don't be afraid.. Just trust.. Trust your horse, trust yourself.. And if you can't do that then is this passion nothing for you.. Don't do
things to your horse when you don't need it

I went riding today and all the horses were ridden bitless and one hand to neck rein. They were the most easy going horses ever! They responded to the LIGHTEST touch and it was nice to know they were not in pain. I felt more in control bitless then I ever have with a bit!
See that's what's missing in the horse community, people that know what they're talking about but can also have loads of fun with their horses. A true understanding is what you need, not a load of 'terminology' love it rick :-)

Man, I watched this video a year ago and I understood everything you said. Now, after a year of riding and aprox 100 hours of riding I`m listening again and things are coming deeply within my understanding of horse behavior. It`s the same words you said, but new meaning for me now, deeper, like onion layers ... Thanks Rick, really. Things are simple, easy and logical, when you ride and spend time with horses.

This video is another one of my favorites -- love watching Buddy cavorting joyfully as he runs to catch up to Mr. T and Rick. I swear that Buddy knows he is being filmed too. He is always playing for the camera. Mr. T is always paying attention to Rick, Buddy, and everything out there, watching and listening intently, while Buddy looks at the camera and cavorts. It makes me laugh so hard. Awesome!

You probably hear this a lot but I could watch Mr. T all day. He is absolutely gorgeous. Don't get me wrong, I love Buddy. His personality reminds me of my gelding's but Mr. T. is just beautiful. So glad I found your videos, Rick. Thanks for all you do!
By the way ... I’ve had my first ride in the snow today with my horse... bareback pad and rope halter through the woods and fields around us. It was so beautiful!!!!! Her trust in me means soo much. Thank you Rick for helping me to be the horse woman that feels right to us ......and no nagging fighting or nitpicking every move my horse makes. She responds when I need her to.... but I leave her alone and have learned good timing in release so she understands what action I was looking for.
Also, to the idiots saying Ricks horses are nervous of him - Watch their body language. They react to the way Rick is talking to them, without contact. It is SO important to be able to communicate with your horse this way. Just because you don't see your conventional tugging and pushing that horse owners usually pertain to, does not mean his horses are afraid of him. His horses are respecting him, they know he is the higher horse and do not challenge that, and they pay attention to him because of this fact. You will see that in horse herds all horses have their eye on the lead horse, which in this case is Rick. Whoever is the lead horse controls the lower horses feet. That is why when Rick asks them to move, they move. He also understands pressure and release. His horses look at him and 'ask' him what Rick wants them to do, because HE is the lead horse who tells THEM to move their feet. Make sense now witches? Notice Mr. T doesn't start being disrespectful and dropping his head to eat while Rick is on his back? You don't need no bloody martingale or pink grass rein to keep his head off the grass! Clearly, the bit wearing horse society frowns upon anything different or unconventional and call it 'dangerous' because they do not understand it. Infact, Rick is so clear in communication with these horses, I would be surprised if he wasn't one in his past life.

There's always a grumpy old lady at a riding stable. That grumpy old lady HASSS to be my instructor. Next time she says "BE THE BOSS DON'T LET THE PONY DO WHATEVER IT WANTS! KICK CHILD KICK!!" I'll tell her NO!
Actually I just hit him soft on cam, afterwards, I put an "easy be nice metal torture bit" in his mouth & showed him who was boss, then I put my feather metal spurs on & kicked him to make him respect me, then I got my special pink whip hit him while I rode, then I put my cushion metal steel shoes & nails in his feet to help him jump higher so when he landed it would traumatize & bruise his bones. Get it right if you are going to point out abuse.

I lived on a farm my whole life and always loved horses. All my older uncles and cousins had them. Well they claimed them I spent more time with them just not allowed to ride them. I totally get what your teaching Rick its ashame the damn horse people don't get the horses! But they are the horse experts they put them in someone's barn and ignore em.

Whenever I walk mine to get tacked up I let him pause and think about everything first. Its like a 2 acre walk so he stops a lot. But he's a nervouse boy. But with the eating thing I don't try to stop him unless we're in the middle of doing something. I love how you're so open and honest about everything!!

My horse was always on the very, very bottom. Bigger geldings would always intimidate her and try to bite at her, even when I was riding. I couldn't ride by their fence or anything without them harassing her. So I'd shoo them off as I rode past, and eventually she would relax and ignore them, because she knew Mom had it handled :P

I always stopped my mare from grazing whilst being ridden.
The reason? Because it got grass in the bit, which I had to clean up after our ride.
No bit is a no brainer after being corrected in the right way to communicate with your equine partner.
I took many moonlit rides and only had a halter on her and never really understood how comfy we both were without the damned bit in her mouth.
I miss that wonderful mare, and she was mine til she died at the age of 33. I bought her as a yearling and we learned together.
She was the patient teacher.

Mr.T and buddy are really enjoying you (or your moods and emotions). So many riders wonder why there horse is angry. It's because the horse don't like angry people. They mirror you yes they join your feelings. They feel you. They love happy people and thats what u are! U are doing great! So yes: If you are happy and feeling good, they become happy and feel good as well.
I love your videos! I’ve worked horse for years and I have always got the best results from a halter and lead rope. Your videos have helped me gentle horses that’s came from sales terrified of people and our actions because they’ve been beat or came out of feed lots. Every time I have problems I look on your channel to find anything I can that’s remotely close to what I’m dealing with. Thank you for your videos!
