I ride and canter two different horses with NO prep, No riding in a month or more and no proper warm up or slow controlled riding. This is when you see where a horse really is. If I did this all time it would not take long for both these horses to become unmanageable, resistance and dominant. Doing these short rides are good to see how you are doing and how good you and your horse know each other.
Part one of a three part series about cantering a horse in a rope halter. I ride Buddy and Mr T and have them canter while showing how to ride with one rein when you have two reins. I also talk about a horse being "on the bit" or "on the halter". I show contact and lose reins riding. When Buddy rears he is reacting to me not being clear, not warming him up properly and not being a clear strong leader. He does NOT buck when I do things better and right.
In part two I ride Mr. T, he is older and more riding time than Buddy, but he is much easier to get to move, not so good at getting him to stop or slow down.
In part three I ride Buddy, much younger, and likes to play, I am let him get away with little more since he was abused and neglected, so he tries to buck and rear, just like I say I am going to cause him to do.
l talk about TV series called Brain Games where they do good studies and test to show how our human brains work. The more you look at yourself the better you will do for your horse. Here is link: braingames.nati...
As usually I move around on lots of topics and areas, but I try and tie all three parts together.
Buddy and Mr. T you are good boys.

Not random, that is my pet ant. I call him Picnic and if you look closely you will see a little tiny bit, he was abuse when he was born and his mom abandoned him, I had to imprint him, so I have to use a bit on him to control him and make him listen. He is a little sugar sour & cries if he smells sugar and he has some bad breeding, but I am working on making him a better Ant. Looking for Ant trainers

      Thanks, Helen!
I'm loving this too! As a little girl who was so in love with horses, it's great to find this channel. And I'm insane to even imagine at this point I'll ever own a horse. Or much less have a clue how to train with kindness.
Buddy and Mr. T are amazing and beautiful horses! Buddy seems so cute and playful. He is bonded to Mr. T. When Rick videoed how he works with Mr. T without a bridle or bit, Buddy was so excited, playful, and followed them almost through that video. Seemed that he wanted to be included because it looked like fun. Buddy was excited and did a few kicks or bucks (excuse me for not using the correct terms for horse behavior ;) My stupid human behavior thought it was damn cute.
Probably this sounds really geeky, but I really like to run into another person who seems to be coming from the same place I am....females like me, especially.
      :)

I want to thank you with all my heart ❤️Rick. I've had my mare for 4.5 years and in that time I've wanted to ride in a rope halter and "sometime" with a bareback pad. For the past couple of weeks I have been practicing in the round pen and today, for the first time with my girl, I walked, trotted and CANTERED! Not just in the round pen, but in the adjacent grass field as well! She and I have never felt happier! She went nicer then ever and easily went from a walk to canter! Your videos and your passion for good horsemanship helped push me to be a better horseman and rider. Thank you! 🐴😊🇨🇦

I grew up on a ranch outside Calgary. Grandfather had a ton of horses and grandmother was a retired barrel racer. Watching these vids I see just how stupid I was when I was younger. I had good horses like my palomino mare Blondie only because the folks trained her for me. She never had a bit. Most times I would be in a back field and grab a piece of binder twine off a fence post to make a quick hackamore because I was too lazy to walk home.
Buddy seems to be like my Blondie and just loves to have fun. Whether going down Center street in the city or following a river he was just happy to be part of it all. She was smarter the most people I know and still miss her a lot. Keep up the good work.

seeing the same effects here in finland... telling people that switching to rope halter and no bits worked instantly (which it did) also helps telling them i am a bloody newbie beginner rider in the first year with horses... that impresses them even more.
Finnlands traditionalist rider folks seem to believe bitless riding is whichcraft of horsewhisperers and requires 120 yrs experience before can be applied.

You are very good with your horses, how you handle them, and talk with them, show them lots of love...and the know how you care for and love them. Each horse is different. Your horses understand that different role each of them play. They love each other also. You make some things fun for your horses. I really like your style.

That is a very real perception in horses. All horses buck, kick, bite, rear, run off, spook and react. All normal but can all be prevented or reduced with proper handling and understanding. The problem is "horse traders" tell and trainers sell, perfect horses perfect horse gear, perfect secrets, the unknowing believe it then they get hurt, the horse learns dangerous lessons- & then is then is killed

I 100% agree with not hitting / kicking the horse to go and using your body/ legs to get them to move. A horse we have that we have been working ( hes only been here a few months and yes was abused etc) we have never had to hit him to make him go. You are right that when you do have to use yours reins etc you definitely want it to mean something and not have it mean nothing( desensitize them to the constant nagging of being hit ) plus its just not fair to the horse. Your not doing him any favors by doing that. I love your videos and will often go back and watch them over again to see if I can take away more than the first time as I get more involved in horses.

Thanks for not editing your video. You have made me feel much more certain and confident in what I deal with and how I address the issues I face in riding a green horse. I'm one of those whip people. I use it to exert pressure where my leg goes, she's green and it helps create the bend I'm looking for without having to resort to spurs. She has nice bend now (without exerting whip pressure) where I used to not be able to get her to even consider moving off my inside leg.

Hi Rick! I just started watching your videos (maybe 5-6), I love the communication between you and your horses. I thought I needed to learn the Clinton Anderson way but now I see in a very short time that your way is the less invasive more loving way. I now truly believe that if you are a true lover of horses, harshness cant be any part of your training. These are highly intelligent animals, they really can learn any way humans "choose" to teach. So why teach with such force? I have 2 unbroken rescue horse that have basically been pasture pals here for the last 10 yrs. I have been working with them on the ground and gaining their trust for about 3 yrs now without breaking them simply because I AM OLD! I don't care to fall off! Just recently my 16 yr old granddaughter has been helping me with them, we put saddles on them without incident and find they are still the calm loving horses with saddles on as they are without. Go figure! ha ha. My question now is, what would you suggest we do from here. We are just now to the point of laying across their back with and without the saddle. We have lunged with the saddle on with NO bucking, crow hop or rearing. How many times should we be repeating this before we actually put someone on their backs? Neither of us has ever broke a horse, she is young and again I AM OLD! Please help!! lol

I've been riding my horse in a rope halter for over a year now with zero problems. I recently rode him again in a bit and he gave me hell over it. Never going back.
