- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

Oh my gosh i love oloids!!! What a great idea! That was one serious feat of engineering and problem solving, and the end result is just too cool!! And you chose one gorgeous stone to work with!! Absolutely fantastic idea! Awesome video as always and huuuge thanks for being a part of the challenge!!!😄
Thanks for inviting me again, Theo! I had a ball doing this. The rock wasn't chosen for it's beauty, but for its size. It turned out to be beautiful too.
That is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time! Cheers to you Rob! A challenge we’ll done. Thanks Thomas for the idea!
Thanks! It was a fun project to do, even though I wasn't sure how it was going to go a few times along the way.
What a fun challenge, and you wailed on it good, for the win! I must say this is one I won’t be trying to replicate…..no saw or cab machine.
You do the hobby a great service every time you share. Thanks for all of the effort to share. Stay safe!
Thanks, John. I don't think I'll be making another one of these either. I really enjoyed doing this once, but once was enough.
That's really cool, Rob. I've seen those carved from wood and molded from clay, but I've never seen one carved by hand from stone. This is a big success!
I was very happy with the way it turned out. I don't think it's perfect, but to just look at it, it's hard to see any flaws. You know how flaws bug me, right?
Bless your heart, Rob, for making this for the Maker's Challenge. I've seen oloids before, but never have seen one made. My head still doesn't want to wrap around it even though your demo model showed it clearly and your finished product looked incredible. Good work!!
This was right up my ally. Good 'ol Thomas came through for me with the perfect suggestion.
I couldn't quite grasp the concept until your paper circles. I love this! Thank you so much for this! It's cool and it's beautiful!
The circles helped me out a lot. I looked at a lot of different videos and websites to try to understand the shape. I tried to share what helped me the most.
So glad you included the 2 circle demo. It made it easy to understand the concept. You did a great job on the rock!
Thanks, Jennifer!
Well, there's one stone that'll gather no moss. Sorry, I couldn't resist. This really showcased your problem solving skills.
There was some problem solving along the way for sure. There were probably some better ways to do some things, but I was just glad to get the job done.
I love learning new things! Awesome project. The paper demo was very helpful in understanding this Escher-like shape.
Yes it was. I found it really helpful so I shared it with you.
Great video! You had said it was challenging while you were making it, but I had no idea it was THAT challenging. It turned out really cool, and I'm glad it was a success.
I was pretty sure it was that challenging from the get go. I knew that just getting a nice, square block was going to be difficult.
Thanks for suggesting this project Thomas! 👏 I had never heard of an oloid and I think they are amazing.😊
Oh my gosh, we just laughed out loud when you said your confidence in the project was fluctuating. Haha i like these challenges, keeps us wondering right to the end! We’re enjoying this so much.
I sure was wondering until the end. I never completely lost hope, but each new step had me concerned. It was a fun project to do.
Amazing Rob!! This is definitely a top shelf project for the maker’s challenge!!!
Thanks, Michelle!
Sublimely fantabulous. Thank you for making my head spin lol. Truely great!
I’m glad you had fun with it too, Marie.
Amazing project and also really beautiful! The green rock turned to be a hit! Congratulations
I was going to do this with a better rock, but I didn’t have anything big enough. I wasn’t sure how good this rock was, but it turned out to be really nice.
Lol @8:49 as a fellow math person I was like "Oooo non-Euclidean lines. Better use a laser to project it!" and then I giggled when you actually did. This project was right up your alley!
Yeah, that had me stumped for a few minutes. I kept thinking I had a good plan just to find that it didn't work. It's always fun to learn new stuff. The laser was a life saver.
So very impressive. The amount of skill and ingenuity you applied to this project is laudable! I'm giving you a standing ovation. Well done, sir!
Wow, the standing type of ovation is the best kind, I believe. Thanks!
Oh my goodness!! I hope everyone understands the complexity in what you just did with a rock!! That was amazing lapidary work! You are a wizard sir! Turned out perfect.
It was challenging for sure. The hardest part was cutting a natural rock into a nice square block.
O Rob! You really nailed this one!! I give you the WIN for Most Challenging Concept piece! Wow -- fabulous!
Thanks, Sally.
I could not for the life of me figure out how you were going to make that. Was clear as mud until you showed the paper version. Then it clicked. That is so awesome. You nailed it. Thank you so much for sharing.
I didn't understand it myself until part way through the process. I did this over about three days and watched some videos and looked at pictures along the way.
That was quite amazing! I can see how that can be confusing putting grinder to stone. You did an admirable job on that. I like those kind of puzzles.
I have been in a bit of a rut making the same sorts of things all the time. I needed a project like this that was completely different. This project challenged me but that's exactly what I needed.
You really made this Makers Challenge challenging. You had so much patience with this project. It turned out so well.
It was a little challenging, but fun too.
Got to give you a 👍🏻 for figuring that out. Now I’m headed for the aspirin to fix my headache.
It wasn't that hard to figure out once I got started. Picturing it without having it in had was much more difficult.
My head is exploding!!! I had no doubt that you would succeed!!! That is the coolest project yet!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I had some doubt, but somehow it worked out.
Wow! I've seen them 3d printed, never thought I would see a rock ground into one. Nice job!!
I had never seen one at all. It's a fun object and was a fun project too.
This is such a neat little thing! I love it! I don't think I'd be able to figure out the geometry to even attempt to make one of these. So cool!
Sure you would. It's not all that complicated. There was some confusion along the way, but when you see it in person, it makes more sense.
That was a REAL Maker's Challenge. Although you being a Math Teacher, probably made it a litter easier. Job Well Done. I will have to try the "paper version", think I can handle that one.
I never studied things like this and had never heard of an oloid. I have to admit that I probably liked this because it was so geometric.
such a cool carving, glad you persevered!! seeing the process was very interesting, and what a beautiful choice of stone!
I wasn’t sure about that rock, but it turned out to be really nice. I know I made some turtles out of the other half of that rock, but I couldn’t remember how they tumbled. I would have liked to put this in the Lot-O but I just didn’t know if it would undercut some.
This is way too cool 😎 Rob! This was a definite challenge.😳 Glad you were a math teacher for so long, someone else would have probably given up. Thank you for sharing this awesome project!!✌️🤠
I'm not sure that being a math teacher helped too much, but I think it's one of the reasons I found this shape so intriguing.
That was really cool and just a bit fiddley, buy you pushed through an it and made it. Thanks for sharing your finished stone with us. Great polish and it rolled! Be happy, safe and stay healthy 😷⚒
It was a bit fiddly. I was never quite sure how the next step was going to work out, but I was happy that they all did.
Awesome project, I really enjoy how well you explain it all. Thank you for sharing this with us, I learned quite a bit from it! You are a natural born teacher.
Thanks, Lauren. I'm glad you liked it.
This is so cool!!!! It was a bit of a mind bender at the beginning! But it turned out great and the paper model really helped! Thank you for bringing us along!!!
Sure bent my mind. I think it's finally getting straightened out.
Ooooh! I'm feeling polished rock envy☺️that was a very good video. Watching you figure it out and try some more. Now, Do it Again!🕊️🖖👋👋
I might do something else challenging, but one of these is enough for me.
Fantastic creation! This shape would be perfect to hold also, very tactile. And fun ❤️
Yes it is fun to hold too. Just a neat object.
I really love it, my brain exploded a little with all the work involved 🤣 but the end result was perfectly explained along the way.
I really appreciate your attention to detail ❤️
It kinda makes the tear drop cabochon shape from the side it’s like two cabs merged into one. Very visually interesting shape!
I agree, it does look like that. Fun shape.
You da man, or something equally cool. Outstanding job, Rob! “I think I can, I think I can” got you to an end result that worked wonderfully! Congrats! From my end you are a winner! Joy S. (Yeah, not Richard) from Northern Indiana
Thanks, Joy (not Richard)!
Very cool! At first it seems like a shape impossible to achieve. Your intersecting paper circles really helped with the concept. I think that to accomplish what you did with your green rock required not only a logical approach but quite a bit of faith that the shape would in fact emerge. It's one of those mind benders that slip in and out of understanding! Thank you for stretching my brain cells with your very successful makers challenge! The stone took a fantastic polish. Really beautiful! Thanks, Rob!
I didn't have 100% confidence that I could pull this off, but somehow it all came together. I love it when a plan comes together.
That is cool. I have never seen anything like this. All of the makers challenge have been cool.
It is fun to see the huge variety of things that people come up with. I like that it's so open ended.
That’s so cool! It was fun to watch it roll. You did a pretty good job working it out.
I was really happy with how it all worked out. I wasn’t at all sure I could pull this off when I started.
Real science!!!!!! Bravo!!!! 👍🙏👍
Where does the math end and the art begin? Where does the art end and the math begin? This old engineer says at the beginning. It is beautiful.
It is beautiful, isn't it? I really like this fun little object.
That's actually way cooler than I thought nice job Rob !!!
Thanks, Motohead!
Such a cool project. Kind of mind bending!
I love the infusion of math, science, and art! The paper model was a nice touch, really illustrates and simplifies the concept. It is beautiful and a testament to your resourcefulness and skills! Plus it will entertain your grandson for hours. I truly enjoyed this video!
I really enjoyed making this one. It got me out of a rut of doing that same sorts of things. It's good to push myself to do something new and challenging once in awhile.
@@MichiganRocks how will you top it next year? This was so creative!
@@mjoyparks I don't want to think about that right now. I'm not at all creative.
@@MichiganRocks bringing out people’s creativity is my specialty, so I hate hearing that!
@@mjoyparks I try, I just don't always have a great imagination. I'll keep trying. In tonight's video I was looking for a way to do a transition from beach to my shop without it being really abrupt. I love the idea I came up with, but Nancy told me that I can't do it again. So now I'm trying to come up with other ideas for smooth transitions. So far I haven't come up with much though.
I love this idea xx gr8 job Rob xx
I can take credit for the stone work, but Thomas @99 Rockhounding gets all the credit for the idea.
Absolutely incredible! Totally fun & educational!!!
Glad you had fun with it.
No simple feat but you did it. Marvelous
I managed to get through it. I'm ready for the next challenge!
funny how such a simple shape can be so complex
And so entertaining!
That was such a fun project to watch!! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
That is fascinating!! Very well done - thank you for doing this!!
I had fun doing it, thanks for watching it!
Rock and roll hehehehe awesome project thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it.,
I am so impressed! Beautiful stone and excellent idea. I hope you win. I've watched several videos and so far I think your project is the best.
This was just a fun thing that Theo Kellison put together. It's not a competition. I just enjoy seeing all the unique things that other people make.
I like the striations left by the saw on the outside of the rectangular prism. Reminds me of lenticular stickers. Good thinking using the laser level!
If only there were 3D images on it.
Great job Rob! Love this!!!! So cool!!!!!
Thanks, Gina!
Wow! That is pretty neat! A lot of work goes into that... Great job👍 I really love the stone you chose as well... Love that green💚 Cheers to a great makers challenge!
Happy Maker's Challenge week, Marlaina! This turned out pretty good, I think. I was happy with it anyhow.
@@MichiganRocks It really turned out great! The rolling at the end was oddly satisfying😄 I had played it on the big screen and funny thing...my cat thought so too! Lol😸 Looked like a bobble head... I was rolling🤣
@@MarlainaAtkins It is pretty fun to play with.
A Fantastic carving challenge. Made use of every machine Great to hear all the thought that went into it , a great video.
I did use a few machines, didn’t I? I could have gotten by with just a decent sized trim saw and my cabbing machine, but if I’ve got other stuff, why not use it?
this was really technical in such a tricky simple way, like a test in drafting class! until you were done my brain kept getting twisted around trying to follow, but really cool brain stretcher, and the end result is as aesthetic as a slinky, or dominoes , just fun to watch ! seems like it would be very stress relieving to play with and focus on ! another awesome vid!
I wasn't at all sure what I was making along the way either. I think I worked on this on three separate days which gave me time to watch more videos and look at more pictures along the way. I really didn't understand how I was supposed to do that final grinding until I got started doing it. It did turn out better than I expected though.
That is so cool! Thanks for sharing!😊❤️
You're welcome, Julie!
That is so cool! Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome, Laura!
How cool is that!! I think it’s fascinating!
Cool idea for a project, thank you for sharing 😊💙
Really cool idea! How satisfying it is in the hand and then rolling it! Yours actually rolled really well! And it looks so cool doing it! great project and great work on it!
It was a really cool idea, but I can't take any credit for that at all. I'm really glad Thomas suggested this because it was fun to make and is a really cool object.
That is pretty awesome Rob great Job...
Thanks!
Awesome job Rob
That was some serious geometry. Killer project.😎
It was pleasantly geometric, wasn’t it? Fun, fun, fun.
That is awsome.👍👍👍
Love that!
👍
you have great tools --- I love this video thank you
for sharing !
Oloid....cool 😮
I loved this! Very cool and you polished it up very nicely! Excellent video!
Thanks, Julee!
Great video! Beautiful rock, sort of looks like jade.😁
It is green, isn't it?
That is amazing.
Amazing!
Successful rock & roll! Very cool.
Thanks!
Cool. Really love it.
Awesome job !
Amazing work using the tools you had.
Neat. I have never seen or heard of that before. That was definitely a challenge.
I hadn't heard of this before either. It was a very different project for me from what I usually do and really fun because of that.
Wow! Oloids are super cool! i didn't even know anything about oloids until i saw your awesome video! your oloid totally rocks!😍🥰😇👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I didn't know anything about them until Thomas suggested I make one. I agree that they're super cool.
@@MichiganRocks They are very fascinating! 😍🥰😇👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Awesome, that thing is pretty cool. Nice job!!
Thanks!
Oh my goodness Rob I want one!!! And double oh my goodness Rob holy heck! That was not an easy challenge at all but your brain absolutely conquered it!!!! That’s no easy feat man! I’m gonna make the paper version for kids at work but I absolutely (as always), take my hat off to your mastery mate. That is awesome!!!!!
Thanks, Jesse! I just finished watching you video and I'm equally impressed with what you made. I need to make one of those too. I'll get it all done and Nancy will tell me that it will look good in my shop.
That such an interesting shape and you did a great job with working the stone and the polish too!
Such a cool makers challenge video :)
Thanks, Kyle!
@@MichiganRocks You're welcome, Rob! 🤠
Thomas is like it's a challenge? Cool difficulty set to 99 rock hounds🤣
He challenged me, alright.
Wow that is really cool.
Looks really tricky to make.
Pretty stone too.
It was a little tricky, but as I just did one step at a time, I was able to figure it out. Fun project!
Super cool!!
Way to keep those retired math teacher skills in use. When you started bending the cardboard, I was saying "Rob why wouldn't you use a laser?" Ahh, then it appeared.
Rob is a little slow sometimes. I got it eventually.
How cool you guys are all rockin it
That is the coolest ball I’ve ever seen, outstanding job
Not great for throwing, probably, but it rolls sort of like a ball.
Thank you for sharing the entire process. It's very interesting and it's good to know that life is not always easy for you but you're just like everyone else. Lol. But of course when you get to the finished product your genius comes through. It is incredibly beautiful and amazing. Thank you again for another great video I always learn something new and different when we watch your videos.
Yeah, I'm no genius. I do have the ability to stick with things for awhile until I figure it out.
Awesome video! So fascinating!!
Thanks!
So fun. I'd never heard of an oloid! It turned out great and it is very pretty.
I had never heard of one either. Now I have one of my own!
@@MichiganRocks Lucky you! You worked hard for it. Fun rock to have!
Rob,
Great Job, you are a master!
Cheers,
Rik
I'm not sure I'm a master of anything, but I get by.
Very interesting, never of this before! It's actually really cool! Too much math and engineering for me!😂😂 As always you do an outstanding job and face the challenge head on! Thanks for sharing!
This was a new shape to me too. It was a really fun challenge.
Another absolutely awesome creation. It is so cool! I've never seen anything like that before. It's amazing. And beautiful! Great video and good to see such inspiring problem solving. Thanks for sharing.,
I am in awe. That’s amazing you made that out of rock
I'm kind of surprised myself!
@@MichiganRocks I bet
Very cool!
Yeah, there ain't no such thing as a block plane for stone. Or a free lunch, but that's a different story. I love weird shapes, so glad you did this. Go for a mobius strip next!!
A Möbius strip out of stone would be awesome, but that’s beyond my abilities at this time. I just can’t imagine doing something like that without it cracking part way through.
@@MichiganRocks Good point. Jade would probably work without cracking, but I can't think of anything else that would stand a good chance.
@@Ken_G. Jade was exactly what crossed my mind too.
Awesome. Never heard of these but it's very cool. Now I want one lol. Great job
There are places that sell them made out of metal.
Oh man thats amazing.....so difficult...congrats!!!!!
It was a challenge, but I never felt completely hopeless, just unsure of myself along the way.
Trust a math teacher to do this project! :D It's so cool, Rob - good job!
Thanks, Kate!
