    - KINGSLEY NORTH -
    Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

    Hey! I want everyone to know this fine gentleman helped me actually get my rocks to gem finish! His videos and knowledge ended 3 years of frustration and disappointment. I purchased a national geographic tumbler....... and then a very expensive refill kit of their grit..... then another tumbler. I tumbled dozens of loads through all 4 stages 100's of days of trial, error and waiting. I simply gave up for year. Then I discovered this channel and it changed the hobby forever for me and my daughter. I want to thank you for everything you do, what you taught me through your videos worked and I am grateful! My gem finish tigers eye, jaspers, quartz, labradorite and so on are because of you! You rock!

    • @johnhein4851
      @johnhein4851 Před rokem

      The labradorite isn't as good as the harder rocks. I still get chalky streak lines, but it isn't breaking up chipping or coming out a completely chalky ball. My next move is to get more and try tumbling only labradorite in a load on polish stage instead of mixing it in with other rocks. You lose so much material through out the process that by the time you get polish stage you need more of it to fill the tumbler or you have to mix it with other rocks. I didn't have more so I had to mix. If that awesome aluminum oxide doesn't work in a pure load of labradorite I'm going to try ground walnut shells.

      @@johnhein4851 I tried corncob media in my Lot-O, but I did better with my regular, wet method. They weren't a complete failure, but they don't come out nearly as well as other rocks. A big part of the problem is the cleavage planes all over the place.

      I didn't even know what the logo looked like so I just looked it up. That would be hard to do. If I included the outer circle, I wouldn't have a way to cut the part between the outer and inner circle. I also prefer shapes that are a little less perfect. If I make a small mistake on a turtle, no one would ever notice. If I didn't cut a circle perfectly, it would be pretty obvious.

      Most of the tools I use aren’t very dangerous. I should have a belt guard on my saw because that’s probably the most dangerous part. I can put my finger right on the blade while it’s running with no pain or amputations. Cutting with the saw is pretty easy if you just go slow. Making a dome on a pendant and keeping a nice, straight girdle line around the edge takes more practice.

    You need to add some small red beads to the Christmas tree… maybe a few loops of silver wire as garland?

    Fantastic video and beautiful green stone! I have to say that I love watching you cut out your ornament, turtle and other shapes on the saw. You are the master and you make it look so easy to get the shapes cut basically perfectly to the outline. Watching you do it with time sped up was really cool! Everything looks beautiful too. Those cabs sure do have a gorgeous polish on them. What size is your loto tumbler? Just curious. Thanks so much for sharing this Rob!✌️🤠🤟

      Thanks, Kyla. Cutting shapes on the saw isn't difficult, you just have to go slow at first. Turtles are probably the most time consuming thing I do. All those indentations between the legs, the head and the legs, and the tail and the legs are pretty time consuming. That video was sped up 20 times.
      I have a single barrel Lot-O. They don't really come in different sizes, just single or double barrel.

    Great projects for a cold winters evening ! I was just wondering how you get a uniform groove depth around the edge of the cabochon.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  Před rokem

      I don’t. I just get close and the wire evens it out. I use a piece of copper wire to test the depth as I go. It’s not perfect. I saw something on the Rock Tumbling Hobby forums where someone had an idea for making a gauge, but I can’t remember exactly what it was. the problem with gauges is that the bit wears down over time.

    • @davidhile5363
      @davidhile5363 Před rokem

      @@MichiganRocks Thanks for the answer. Yeah if you had spots that were to deep the tightened wire would just span that area anyway.

    My son is a quadriplegic, for Christmas we got him a national geographic tumbler. We wanted him to have success, because this is just about the only thing he can physically do, even if it is just to push a few stones into a tumbler. Watching your videos has shown us how we can give him a good experience with something he is interested in. He has always collected stuff, and has a little rock collection. I wish I could have shown the world how excited he was to take his rocks out of the tumbler for the first time. I know it is a small but fun thing to most people, but to him, and us, it is the world. Just wanted you to know how important you and your video's are to someone.

    Those turned out great. I was wondering if the cabbing machine would do better at bringing up a polish. Probably so because of the range of grits on the wheels. But the satin finish on the tumbled pieces still look nice as is. Thank you for sharing this and making it interactive for us by entertaining our suggestions. You do fine work! Question: The dop wax...is this anything like the microcrystalline wax used in the lost wax casting process? 'Cerita' is the only brand of that material I know of. Your dop wax looks like it has more 'gooey' additives in my opinion, unlike Cerita which will totally liquify at certain temps necessary for filling molds.

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  Před rokem +1

      With a really hard rock, I can probably get a better shine in my tumbler. I'm better at tumbling that cabbing. My wheels only go up to 3,000 grit, while my tumbling grit goes up to something like 8,000 or higher. With a softer rock, I do better on a cabbing machine.
      I have no idea what the qualities of dop wax are. My only experience with wax is that and candles.

    Turned out really sweet - just wondering what grit the grinder is using - & is it easy or necessary to change out the grinding wheels for any reason? Cheers!

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  Před rokem

      The grits on my cab machine are: hard wheels: 80, 220 soft wheels: 280, 600, 1200, 3000. I haven't changed any wheels yet. There are six of them, so you don't have to change the wheels as you work, you just go to the next wheel. The only other thing you have to do is turn on the water valve to the wheel you're currently using.

    Great video!! Was wondering three things about the Christmas Tree: what drill you used to drill the hole, what did you use for the eyelet itself (premade or make your own) and what glue did you use to set it?
    Thanks!!

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  Před rokem

      I can answer all of those for you.
      I use 1 mm drills in a Dremel mounted in the Dremel drill press accessory. The drill bits I use are cheap but don't last long. I buy 100 bits for $75 from Kingsley North. I get between zero and about a dozen holes from one bit. They won't drill really hard rocks like Lake Superior agate. They work pretty well for puddingstone, unakite, quartzite, and the rock in this video, whatever that is. They work really well for soft rocks like Petoskey stone. kingsleynorth.com/diamond-drills-kingsley-north-inc-pkg-of-100+kn_dimd_drill_pack-Pkg-100+kn_dimd_drill_size-10mm-Diamond-Drill?ref=robertabram1& (affiliate link)
      I use square silver wire for the eyes. I'll be able to make several from the scraps from the groove wraps I did in this video. I make the eye with a pair of round nosed jewelry pliers. Then I hold the eye in a pair of pliers and twist the bottom to make a spiral. I figure that won't pull out of the hole as easily as a straight wire.
      I use Epoxy 330 to glue them in.
      Here's a whole video on how I make Christmas ornaments: czcams.com/video/VDoZL4MiPgQ/video.html
