Michigan Rocks
United States
Registrace 6. 10. 2006
Michigan Rocks is about rock hunting, rock polishing, and lapidary arts. Most of my rock hunts are on beautiful Great Lakes beaches. The rocks I tumble and work with are not all from Michigan, but most of the outdoor videos are.
Hi, I'm Rob. I have been learning about rocks and how to polish them for over ten years. I have several tutorials on how to use a rock tumbler. I also have a series called "Rocks in a Box" where I show rocks that I have tumbled in the past. Besides tumbling, I slab rocks, make jewelry and do other creative projects. I'll do my best to teach you what I know.
You can expect more outdoor videos during the spring, summer, and fall and more indoor lapidary videos during the long Michigan winters. I post every Friday and some Tuesdays.
I am not a geologist, so I'll identify rocks I recognize and admit when I don't know what something is. There is a lot I don't know, so I hope to learn some from my viewers. I think we have a pretty good community growing here.

Hunting Keweenaw Agates
My neighbor Sam and I headed up to Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula for an agate hunt, and we were not disappointed in our finds. Sam found a couple of beauties, and I managed to find one myself.

Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

Today I'm polishing a 12.5 pound Petoskey Stone. It's always a little hard to tell if one this rough will turn out or not, but you'll just have to watch the video to find out. I used the following polishing pad grits: 30, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 3000. HISEA sent me a free pair of waders that I'm wearing in this video. Why???
This is a great part two! I think the graph shows it well. As a machinest, we had a sales guy come to sell a parts deburring machine( your loto vibration unit on steroids) . There was different shaped ceramic meida available. The sales guy knew his stuff and explained how some meida is better for different shaped parts,holes,edges.... he kept quoting the removal rate... I wish i still worked there. :( I would like to grab a handful of that meida and run a few tests of my own. Great work! I hope my daughter is as excited for her gift as i am. Lol Cheers from Wisconsin.
Essa sou eu, até o Senhor Jesus terminar de me lapidar daí sim estarei pronta!
Why
if that's 18 inches you have little hands
Maybe. Just a guess.
Go blue.
Beautiful!
Man that's awesome. Thank you for sharing, love your videos
Thanks!
You did it again. 😊 go blue
Wart rock
Nice Job .. I Love Michigan
What a find !!! Wow! You did something special with that beauty. Go Blue.
That one didn't take much from me. Hard to mess something up that starts out that good.
Its ugly, looks like a turd
I hope you will review the Highland Park version of this tumbler now that Lortone is closing. It seems like the best option now but I haven’t found many reviews on it. I would also like to know how much 1T of each type of grit weighs so I can calculate how many tumbles I will get out of a 1 lb bag. As a beginner I am not ready to buy 45 lb bags but maybe 1 lb is not enough.
Buying one pound at a time is really expensive, especially if you're paying for shipping. It seems that Lortone has been purchased by Covington Engineering. lortone.com/pages/contact
It's beautiful, Rob
Looking good so far
Uaaaauu!!!! Quanta maravilha!!!!!
Do you really have a water hose attached to an 110 vac electric grinder? Watched it again, and yep... RIP
It's designed for that. There's a GFCI on the cord and another at the outlet. I also wear rubber boots and rubber gloves.
What defines a petoskiy stone bc I remember as a kid traveling w my grandparents to tip up town where they owned a fishing camp w cabins and collecting those stones. I never knew exactly what they were
They're fossilized coral. There are lots of other fossilized corals here in Michigan, but only hexagonaria is considered Petoskey Stone.
Watching from the Gulf Coast, contemplating a trip to the Keweenaw when I'm up north this summer ...
The water will be colder there, but you'll have fun.
Whats it used for?
Decoration, usually. People just like polished rocks.
@@MichiganRocks okay that makes sense. I was curious if it was made just for the enjoyment and to have an item for the mantle. I love how we all do different stuff in life. so even if it's not exactly our preference we all still get to enjoy the process and finished product. 🙂 Also Thank you for taking the time to reply.
Wow! So much red! And all these green stones. Are those greenstones?
They're green stones, but not the kind you're thinking of. Chlorastrolite is Michigan's gemstone.
Hi, Rob. I haven't seen many Lake Superior rocks, and so this is a lot of fun for me. And I must ask: The interesting rock at 9:22: it's been a year now since you picked it up.Have you figured out what it must be? Always a great show!
Nope, I still don't know.
Thank you so much for this video!
You're welcome!
Beautiful! What is the name of that attachment for hose on your grinder? I’d love to give this a try with a few of my bigger Petoskeys but I’m struggling to find an attachment like that.
It's not an attachment. The grinder is designed that way. If you go to my Amazon storefront (it's in the description of this video) you'll find the one I have.
Truly a beautiful stone. Tumbles incredibly well
Whoa! What an incredible find!
Очень красиво. Привет из Сибири
Привет из Мичигана.
Electric grinder + water! What am I missing?
Maybe that it's designed for that?
Beautiful
It's very nice and you should slice it and make jewelry out of it
I'm thinking about it. I have the slicing part done. czcams.com/users/shorts_20xI6CC9Ps
Kinda polisher you using
It's a Makita. If you look in the description of this video, you'll find my Amazon storefront. I have it listed there.
You should have shown a pea sized stone at the end... for humor
My brother in law once replaced the Thanksgiving turkey in his mother's oven with a Cornish hen when she wasn't looking. .
@@MichiganRocks That's awesome!!!
That's pretty
anyway to recover coarse grit?
No. After about a week it isn't coarse grit anymore. It breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces over time.
😂😂😂😂 the beard and mustache thing was a great comedic break for the brain 😂😂😂😂
I'm glad you liked it. My wife sure didn't.
Just think how beautiful God’s kingdom will be with the glowing rocks shining through the walls and all.
Looking forward to seeing that.
Go blue!
You're very lucky to find stones like that.
Yes I am. I'm thankful for where I live.
It shrinks too much! But is gorgeous!
Yep, that's hard to avoid.
That is freaking awesome 💯
At one time I had one that was 420 lbs. Also one that was 160 lbs. They have been seen as large as 10 feet across.
I've heard of them that big in quarries. There's a huge one at the Besser Museum in Alpena, but not quite as big as ten feet across.
It's beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Job Well Done. GO BLUE!!!
Thanks. Go blue!
The electric grinder with water has me thinking future Darwin Award winner!? If not, spending lots on new grinders
It's designed to be used that way. There's a GFCI built into the cord, another one at the outlet, and I wear both rubber gloves and rubber boots. Hopefully no Darwin Award for me.
It's a fossil
Yes, the fossilized coral hexagonaria.
That water is so clear I had no idea
That's how water typically is in Michigan.
I love it!
Beautiful!
😍❤️💜🤎🧡💛💚🔥🔥🔥
