  • @claudetteyoung3383

Traditional Native American knife makers would have used the antler to chip (flake) the obsidian into shape. By shipping it, the natural elements of the stone itself creates the shape and the sharpness. Those puppies are deadly to work with, especially if they have any length to them. I've worked arrowheads and a lance lade the same way, many years ago, and it takes little time, but real care is needed. In chipping the stone, the likelihood of it shattering is heightened Thought you'd like to know how if was done in the old days and is still done by many of the traditionalists in the tribes. Like your blade's look. Wasn't expecting the smoothness. I've never seen it like that before except in small cabs. Great job.

FYI: when I was a freshman in highschool I had a part-time job working for a guy who made stuff out of antlers - buttons, can openers, bolo ties, belt buckles, salt and pepper shakers, etc. All the machining was done with a band saw, drill press, table sander and flannel buffing wheels with tripoli and rouge. The highly polished buttons were beautiful! The stink, tho, you will not forget!😂

To stop that adhesive tube (or any like it) from oozing, and get proper "responsiveness" and fine control - poke a small hole in the piston bottom of it. With adhesives, put and smear out a drop of oil on the pumper's piston surface too. If it's a manual, untension the pushrod when putting it down.
These tubes/cylinders "always" have a small pocket of air/gas inside from the filling process. The product material is usually incompressible. But that air bubble certainly isn't. That means it in practice acts like a spring inside the tube. So when you're pumping, you compress that bubble too. Thisnis also why pumping can be needlessly hard, and whynit feels spongy, springy, like brakes with air in them. When you stop applying pressure, that bubble is gonna start _decompressing,_ and push out content as it displaces it inside the tube.
By puncturing the bottom, in the first few pumps you evacuate that bubble.

If you do another obsidian knife, are you going to do the flint knapping method?

I don’t know how to do that, doesn’t seem easy to just do.

😂🤣 yeah, you'll only grind bone in the house once. That smell is like burnt hair multiplied by 1,000. Looks really good. I don't know if it's possible to get obsidian to be obsidian sharp by any other way, but knapping it.

Literally 😂 I think some surgeons use it but I don’t know how in the world they get it that sharp.
