- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

This isn't just a project, it's a tutorial! Fantastic job, and excellent, clear explanation of all the steps involved and reasoning behind them.
My videos tend to be tutorials. I'm a retired teacher and can't seem to help myself.
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: Every member of your family sounds like such cool people ! Beautiful rocks...magnificent butterflies. I'm truly impressed. I'm so happy I found your channel back when I did. You've provided so much rockhounding enjoyment that currently would be unavailable to me in my current state of health.
I'm glad I can bring you some enjoyment.
My wife and I loved the butterflies. They really look great and you did an excellent job (as always) explaining and showing the steps along the way. We love the fact that you made them because of your daughter.
Thanks, Rick. I really had fun with this project.
Please tell your wife that I love her daisy room. Daisies are my favorite flowers. Your butterflies turned out great and I really enjoyed seeing the process! The pink plaid looking one is absolutely adorable! But the pudding stone turned out to be the most realistic looking. Marvelous job!
The puddingstone seems to be a crowd favorite. I like the Kona dolomite one the best.
🦋 My favourite part was when you revealed the butterfly’s little hooked feet for hanging onto the petals! 🦋 An awesome video, and an awesome job!
That's funny that that was your favorite part. I liked seeing the wings progress the best.
Wow! What a thing of beauty. These butterflies are so creative and just turned out amazing!
I love the wedge you built to place the wings... Very innovative.
Cheers to a fantastic makers challenge!✨
Thanks, Marlaina! The wing gluing jig was pretty much a necessity.
WOW ! You are a wonderful artist ! These butterflies are gorgeous ! 🥰🥰🥰 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks, Easter!
I love Butterflies! I'm wanting to raise some like your daughter did. The pink stone butterfly is my favorite! Nice job!
The pink one is my favorite too. My daughter would go find eggs on the bottoms of milk weeds and then raise them inside.
Absolutely delightful, love all of them ❣️
Thanks, Helena.
What a lovely idea Nancy had with the daisy theme and such an amazing thing for your daughter to do releasing all those butterflies!! The daisy centres you made are a worthwhile improvement and when you add the butterfly it will enhance your wife's daisy theme and celebrate your daughter's love of butterflies!! Such a brilliant idea and to make of stone something that's naturally very delicate is a nice touch and it turned out beautiful! Your wife keeps a lovely home and I love how clean everything is and organised although I'm sure you do your bit kudos to the missus 🧡🌼🦋
That wall hanging just keeps getting better. I'm not sure what to do next. Bees?
@@MichiganRocks I was so pleasantly surprised by the difference the centres made from cold and tacky to warm and elegant and the butterflies are just the icing on the cake!! 🤔 I think bees would be lovely but I'm afraid it would obscure the daisies 😂 I think you were joking anyway ☺️ but I did wonder if you could actually make petals to fill in some of the empty ones with the white stones you find... Another couple who made made a wonderful team work were Katy and Jim with their maker challenge project. All you guys are gifted artists and it's lovely to be able to enjoy all the videos you share 🧡
@@helgavoorneveld1530 Yes, it was fun to watch Kate and Jim together.
I thought adding the 3-dimensional shape was a stroke of genius. Some people would have just made the wings flat and called it done, but yours are ready to leap off the wall!
I agree, the dihedral in the wings is essential to make these look much more realistic.
Well done Rob. Every butterfly is so beautiful. Your attention to detail is amazing. Loved how you mounted them on the daisy wall hanging. Thanks for being a part of the Maker’s Challenge.
Thanks, Michelle. The wall hanging was the motivation for this project. They had to be mounted there.
Those turned out really awesome! They look great both ways! But Makers Challenge 2023 complete and your project looks amazing! They all are so cute and amazing! Thanks for premiering your entry! It was fun!
The Challenge isn't complete until tomorrow when Theo shows his creation. I don't do premiers often, but they are fun when I do.
Those turned out so nice. I love the different colors and patterns of the stones you used. I remember when you updated the rod iron flower display, now it looks even better with the butterflies. Boy, that Nancy sure does come in with good ideas. Great project Rob, I really enjoyed watching your creative process. 👏👍🤩
She does doesn't she I love to see them out together we don't see enough of Nancy!! And I really like how Rob and Nancy's ideas complement each other and that Rob makes things for Nancy labours of love 🤩
We work well together. She tells me what to do, and I do it. Then everyone's happy.
@@MichiganRocks hahaha I'm sure that's not quite how it works but if you are aiming for a happy wife happy life approach to your marriage it seems to be working 🤣🤣
What a beautiful & original idea! The butterflies look perfect on the flowers!
Those flowers are looking better all the time.
one of the most beautiful things ive ever seen made out of stone !
Wow, thanks Nathan!
This has been my favorite makers challenge video of all time! My sweet mother passed away in June of 1997 at the very young age of 48. She loved butterflies and that love of butterflies was passed down to me. Each time I see a butterfly I'm reminded of her. I absolutely loved these that you made and they made me think of my mom with fond memories. Amazingly beautiful ❤️
That's a nice thing to have to remind you of your mom. I usually think about my daughter when I see butterflies. That's good too!
@@MichiganRocks Rob, you are one of the good guys! Don't ever change! Give my love to Nancy and the rest of the family!
It's always an education when watching your videos, they turned out beautifully. 👍💕
It's often an education for me when I'm making my videos. I learned a few things in this one.
It's true indeed butterflies sit on centres and on petals, great team work!!
I'm glad Nancy suggested that.
I usually comment as I watch the video and how sweet someone gifted you the water pick and it's so economical and well sized it won't take up too much space!! And yes safe some needles in the future 🤣🤣
That’s a first for me. Seeing those butterfly rocks are so cool!
First for me too.
Beautiful! You are so great at crafting. All 4 are wonderful. Ithink having the butterflies attached in 2 different ways is realistic. Thanks for sharing.
I was really, really happy with how these turned out. I agree that having two ways to attach them was a good idea. I'm glad my wife suggested the second way.
Wow! Absolutely beautiful! One of my favorite Makers Challenge projects so far! Stunning! 😊
My favorite so far, can't wait to see them all!
Thanks!
You are the epitome of a craftsman! Just great stuff. Best makers so far by far!!!
Thanks, Camilo!
Very nice details on your four butterflies! I like how the pudding stones created the eye effect so often present on butterfly wings. What a great addition to the daisy motif. Thanks for sharing the process.
I tried to make all of the wings mirror images of each other, but the puddingstone showed it them most. I know what you mean about the eyes that are there to scare of predators.
Your explanation of how to make this is just so full of details. Its actually a great tutorial.
I have a tendency to do that. It's good if you want to make them yourself, but it probably hurts the entertainment value.
Wow!! Butterflies are my favourite!!! Love it! Just wow!
I'm really happy with how these turned out. Every bit as good as I was hoping for.
The butterflies are Beautiful! So Creative and it was so fun watching your process, thank you for sharing your talent🤩❤️
Thanks, Julie!
Nancy. Rob’s unsupervised😂😂❤
Shhh...
Well done, Rob!
This was such a wonderful project and it makes me want to get a vibratory tumbler 🙂
♥️
Thanks, Kyle. With all the tools you have, I can't believe that's not one of them. I use that thing for a lot of projects.
@@MichiganRocks you're welcome! And it's getting closer to being on the list of things to get sooner rather than later. :)
So, pretty. Love those. Probably should make a couple for your daughter....
I will at some point. She'd like that.
Everything you make is great! You’re a natural. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, squirrel. If I had a nut, I'd throw it to you.
Rob, the wife and I was waiting for 7 pm like you were going to pull lottery numbers 😄😄Great job as always 👍👍
Sorry, you didn't win. Nice of you to buy a ticket though.
I like the two different styles of alighting combined- it's more realistic. They all look lovely!
Yeah, I guess it is. I like both styles too.
I love the butterflies. Lucky girl!
Thanks, Judi.
What an absolutely brilliant and beautiful addition to the daisy's. Very unique art piece indeed. 🦋 beauties 👍🏼 💚 🐢 much love in Michigan 💦💙 have an amazing summer.
Thanks! Summer was here for a week, and we're back to early spring.
So beautiful 🥲 stone butterflies beat lead zeppelins any day❤
you absolutely made my day and brought up some treasured memories.
I kept thinking of Led Zeppelin and the band Iron Butterfly when I was making these. I think these would fly similarly.
Great job. Very clever with the wood jig to set the wings, worked beautifully. Thanks for sharing
I didn't have much choice in making a jig. I couldn't figure out how else to hold everything steady. It took a little thinking before I came up with that idea.
Those are absolutely stunning, Rob!!! Hopefully, they become a regular item alongside your turtles and crosses. My daughter said you should make them into necklackes and brooches as they are attractive converstaion pieces
No, these aren't going to be sold. The glue connection between the wings and the bodies are way too fragile. I broke the wings off two of these in the process of making this video. One fell off while I was fiddling around putting the legs on and I knocked another off trying to balance one on my finger for a picture. They're both fixed, I don't think people would be happy if they bought one and it broke right away.
@Michigan Rocks some of the best lessons are learned through trial and error. I'm sure you'll discover a way to make them more soundly attached in the future. The end results were absolutely beautiful
Beautiful butterflies. They have a very special meaning for me, so I absolutely adore this idea. Way to go Rob
Thanks, Becky!
Can't wait to see what you'll do
THE BUTTERFLIES ARE ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFEL!!! I’M GOING TO MAKE SOME SOON. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS WITH US.
Good luck!
What a wonderful way to keep your daughter on your mind. Such tedious work labor of love. Looks like you just love creating with nature offers up. Those turned out beautifully ❤
I wonder if she's watched the video yet. I told her a week or so ago that she was going to like this week's video and she immediately said, "Did you make butterflies?". I didn't answer her, but it doesn't look like she'll be too surprised.
Turned out really nice! Your daughter and grandson will enjoy seeing them!
She's watching the video right now. She likes them.
🙋♀️❤ This is just way too much fun! They turned out beautifully! You know, it works having the butterflies both on the petals AND on the centers! Very playful!
You're right. It wouldn't have looked as good if they were all on the centers. I'm glad Nancy said something.
Bravo! Love these butterflies
Thanks!
Your butterflies are amazing! Well done sir! Good luck with the challenge!
Thanks!
Beautiful and creative. Excellent work, as always. TFS ❤️🏏🎸
Thank you!
Creative, meticulous and thoughtful work! Wonderful video and I agree with the other comments!
Thanks, Rebecca!
It's funny, my profile pic is a watercolor butterfly I did inspired by Kona Dolomite. Its lovely to see an actual Kona butterfly!
These turned out fantastic. What a fun project to watch. Thanks for sharing Rob!
Wow, what a coincidence! I thought Kona dolomite combined with butterflies was a unique idea. Great minds think alike I guess.
Hey, that was fun! Love you flutter-bys. I checked out some of the others and learned some new things. I really enjoy your beach walks so these technical channels aren't my thing. But your effort was best because you explain all the steps and discuss the good/bad/ugly. Thank you for bringing such great context to my homebody self.
Most of those channels are about rock collecting like mine is. Since this is the Makers Challenge, everyone was making something. If you look around their channels you'll find that they also have a lot of rock hunting videos too.
Beautiful Rob and Nancy
Thank you.
Wow those stone butterflys are perfect gift for my niece who is a rock hound .
Better get busy making her some!
Love your butterflies and the daisies are lovely too.
Thank you, Dawn!
Love the butterflies and the stones
Love, love, love the butterflies! Retail them!
I would, but they're way too fragile. I broke the wings off of two of them while making this video. They're all fixed up now, but there's no way I could sell them.
@MichiganRocks hmm. Maybe on a bigger scale in which the slabs thicker. They sure are pretty. I like the stone choices, too.
Beautiful butterflies!!
Thanks!
Rob, how very creative and just plain pretty!
Many blessings to you and your wonderful family.
Thanks Shirley!
Fantastic work as always. Good choice, continuing to create memories in you daughters room. Have a awesome weekend Rob.
Thanks, Kelly.
Beautiful! I always appreciate the level of thought and planning you put into your projects.
Thanks, there was a little head scratching involved in this one.
@@MichiganRocks that makes it all the more educational.
they're beautiful.
Thanks, Kane.
Wow... these butterflies turned out SO beautiful! Excellent work! 😊❤🦋
Thanks, Kim!
They look awesome!!!! Great project for the makers challenge!!!
Thanks!
Great video. Butterflies turned out gorgeous.❤
Thanks, Jeff. I was really pleased with them.
Those came out looking so good!
Thanks, Jared!
Hi Rob! Great work, nice when an idea turns into an experiment that works! Labor intensive, but worth it!
I love it when a plan comes together.
Wow, very nice done, and beutiful, love butterflies. Like the artwork
Thanks!
Great, handy gift. The process is quite the ordeal, but the butterflies are magnificent
Gift for who? These are staying right here in the house. I will probably make one for my daughter at some point though.
@@MichiganRocks I was referring to the water pik type tool
This is such a great idea to use symmetrical slabs, they turned out really nice. Especially the puddingstone one!
Thanks, I was really pleased with how these turned out.
Wow!❤
Rob, those are beautiful! I'm a butterfly fanatic so this was right up my alley!😊👍 Now I'm going to have to look at my photos and count legs😂 Great job!
I was just looking to see the shape of the legs and ran across that. I had no idea.
Good job!! Love rocks and butterflies ❤️
This must have been right up your alley then.
What a beautiful project for your home! 🦋
Thanks!
Very nice video !! that's very appreciated watching to your work All think are really nice and beautiful❤❤. Thank you for sharing great work. Have a nice weekend!
Thanks!
Lovely butterflies 🦋
Thanks, Donna.
Divine ❤❤❤
Thanks!
Very cool Rob! Your patience is remarkable. I wondered about the magnets being strong enough for the butterflies. Turns out I was right. I do like Nancy's idea a little better, but your idea is pretty good too. It incorporates 2 different pieces of your work into one. I always think that is cool when an artist (yeah, that's you Rob) can blend a couple of their works to make one really cool piece. Great work!
I kept thinking about the magnets too, but waited too long to order bigger ones. I was going to just glue three of the small ones on, but they were too big for that. I used E-6000 glue so it should peel off pretty easily when I get around to ordering larger ones.
I have never thought of myself as an artist. As a math major, I kind of felt like the opposite of that. I guess I'm getting a little closer to artist with projects like these though.
@@MichiganRocks I thought you might think that way. I may get some flack for this. But people who can actually do something usually don't think their artwork makes them artists. As opposed to those who attempt any amount of art and call themselves artists. 👍👨🎨
@@markreetz1001 That's kind of funny.
Wow, those are really neat! Love your problem solving techniques 😉
Sometimes they actually work!
I'm so glad you decided to do that dark stone! I think that's my favorite, though they're all gorgeous.
That's not my favorite, but I do really like it. I'm glad I did it too. Originally, I was thinking that I should make these as bright and cheerful as I could. But I see black butterflies around here, so they're not all bright colors.
wow !
They turned out awesome Rob! As usual Nancy was right, I like the hanging ones! Thanks for sharing!
Yep, she usually is right. I've come to accept that.
Beyond beautiful!!!
Wow, I overshot it.
Wow I just love how those turned out. And perching them both ways was a great idea. Good job Nancy.
Yep, Nancy's usually right. Luckily, I learned that a long time ago and have accepted it.
That's because you are a good husband and all round good man.
Beautiful projects! I like the hooked feet better than being epoxied onto the flower centers; they can be repositioned at different places for a more realistic appearance, and changed out for butterflies that show up at different times of the spring and summer. For the wings and body gluing support, try applying a thin coating of mold casting silicone to the wood. When it dries, it will grip the rocks, but not the epoxy. Another idea for that is museum wax or the putty sold for sticking up posters on the wall. I love your channel.
I don't know how much mold casting silicone costs, but I don't think I want to buy it just for this. Someone else suggested covering the jig with packing tape which seemed like a good idea.
Very impressive Rob, the things you make are always very cool
Thanks!
Those turned out fabulous!! I love butterflies and those look lovely on the flower decoration. Very nice work. ❤
I sure like that wall hanging more than I used to.
This is brilliant, the up cycling with the stones absolutely set off by the beautiful butterflies Fabulously well done 🎉
Thank you, Naomi!
* Lovely selection of Wing stones. Good part is, I can't really pick a Favorite.. I can imagine them with yellow stones (sulfur winged butterfly?) ~ {Brain freeze ~ I would use the Green & yellow mixed stone that is common here in the northland, can't remember name. Grrr..} ~ ~ Hanging Butterflies are Beautiful.. Thanks for Participating again..
I might make more of these as I find stones that I think will make good wings. I really had fun with this project.
Beautiful butterfly, Rob! Great job!❤❤
Thank you, Diana!
That's sweet
I love them all! Super cute! I have a metal sunflower wall art they would look so cute on! I will be on the lookout now!
Lookout? Are you expecting to have some fly by?
@@MichiganRocks Now wouldn't that be something😂 No silly! Here in S.E. Michigan there are tons of craft shows. I will keep my eye out when I go!
I love this idea. I bet your daughter loved it as well.
She did. She doesn't watch most of my videos anymore, but she said she watched this one.
What a phenomenal job!! Extremely fun to watch!💜💜💜
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
This is so cool! Would love to see a Gary Green butterfly 🦋
I don't have a chunk of Gary Green the big. I have only tumbled a few small pieces. That would look cool, though.
Stunningly beautiful 💕
Thanks!
I love these. My favorite is the dark, thin one. Really looks good. They all do. Beautiful. Congrats.
That one turned out better than I expected. I wanted to use bright, cheerful rocks but there are dark winged butterflies too, so this one worked out well.
Wow, wow, WOW! Beautiful! I love them. (And admire your attention to detail and your patience!)
Thanks, Deborah!
Those are very very pretty.
Thanks!
The butterflies are very pretty and they look so cute on the flowers.
Thanks, Denise!
Beautiful…👏👏
Thank you.
