The Sickness: Overkill or Overjoy?

- So, I says to the guy, 'I'll take a kayak with the works!' And BOY! Did he load it on! Extra cheese, pickles, onion...wait. Wait! He forgot the FISH! What the heck?!
Robb White wrote in his book 'How to Build a Tin Canoe' (one of my favorites) about his 'Rule of Joy'. 'Simply put, it says, "The important thing ain't comfort, it's joy." Joy in boats is inverse to their size. When they get big and full of engines, batteries, toilets, stoves, and other comforts, there just ain't as much room for joy.'
Now you might (rightfully) point out that I am guilty of breaking that rule with my beloved Pelican Intruder X3, with all the gadgets I crammed onto it's 12 foot nine inch length (I added a bit to the end to accommodate the three 5-horse motors) and it's 48 inch beam. But this whole video exercise is probably (mostly) aimed at myself. Kinda like looking at your reflection in the mirror, wishing you could lose a few pounds, while munching on a candy bar at the same time.
I DO think that this endeavor of mine has been a recession from joy while in search of perfection. And, yes. I DO admire the gizmos that enable me to do the things I didn't know I needed to do way back when I was first introduced to the flats. I'd suggest to anyone that they should try them out for themselves and indeed! Here I am, doing just that. The reason for that juxtaposition just might be intended to teach a lesson in excess. A necessary path (for some) so that the pendulum of life can eventually swing back towards simplicity. Or just maybe, you might also follow this path, try a taste of this sickness and never turn back. After all, there is definitely a distractive joy in playing with toys when the fish aren't biting.

Marty, don't ever forget a bad day fishing is better than a good day at the office. I'm freezing up in this Canadian winter and you're living my dream.
Marty has over the years been a very successful CZcamsr and has helped me through depression actually cleared it have it no more he has put me out on the water more times than I can count thank you Marty
I find there's only one problem with talking to yourself; the arguments, no matter how it goes you're gonna lose 😆
But you’re always gonna win too! 😂
And win
That is the coolest fishing boat I've ever seen in my life.
13:52 the riser idea is ingenious…! You really are the kayak MacGyver!
Glad to see you using your kill switches properly, knew a very seasoned boat mechanic who fell out, motor turned sideways (as they often do if you don't hold the wheel/arm) circled around and hit him, too many years on the water that guy, got complacent.
The motor part is absolutely correct! Especially when it's really hot, and your fishing on a big lake.
great to see you enjoying the simple life again Marty ...keep on keepin on Brother
Hi Marty! Your video popped up in my feed (probably because I'm subscribed). It's always good to hear from you. I don't fish, but I love a day on the water. Yes, you can have too many electronic distractions. R, Steve. Cheers!
Hey Marty, I like your intruder 12 setup. You have always had a lot of great ideas; I thank Pelican should have hired you a long time ago as a Designer to see how you could improve on their products. it's obvious that you have a great perspective on what a fisherman likes. Thay would have sold a lot more kayaks doing so.
I adore your hell of a set up. So cool!
That outro music, even the little remix, brings me so much joy. I love the track and it always makes me happy. Your videos have really gotten me through some rough patches. Thank you marty. (Zack from Beaufort nc meet up)
that's a nice rig,thanks for sharing!
i really like this boat and how you built it! that is truly one of a kind
Marty, that's an awesome build. I remember when you received that boat. I'm sure we all talk to ourselves. I myself will explore, and enjoy mother nature. And one more cast, is never one more cast. 😂 🛶 🎣
Yep we all do the talking to ourselves, wether we talk out loud or inner thoughts.
How unsocial were those fish!😮
Thanks for sharing, always enjoy your videos 😊
If it does rain you're a wet genius
sorry the loop didnt work out good but it is great to see you back like old times entoy your videos good luck tony australia
Cool stuff Marty! Thanks for the ride. Best wishes brother. 👍👍👌
That boat ROCKS!!!!
I do love that Intruder with the console, but one gas outboard would do for me! Nice one Marty - stay safe & well. 👍👍
Totally get what you was saying about fishing slow when rowing but engines make you impatient!!!😎🎣🐟
I love the trips outboard setup.
I love when your Queens accent comes out! ha ha ha! Happy new years Marty!
Brooklyn actually. A world away ;^)
I love it how if you’re not looking at the vid for a second, it’s like Christopher Walken is narrating.
What a cool little skiff! I think your theory about paddlers being more patient might hold some water! Have you been up to Maine lately? You and I talked at ICAST last summer. I actually found and purchased 5 acres near Bangor. Fun times ahead! If you find yourself in the area during the summer months, give me a holler and we'll hit up a local pond in the kayaks.
All anglers talk to themselves. 😁
...and to the fish...
😁
Thanks Marty!
Tips for fishing
: Patients it takes time
: as the water gets cooler the fish move less kinda like wasp
: try to cast father you might not think your making a lot of noise but you are the father you cast the more fish
: use natural colors and when the water is more dark use a drmarker color fish’s eyes adapt to everything
: o and some fish see purple better
Looks like the offshore power boat is running the river, thanks for sharing the video.
Yes one thing I learned from fishing from my Kayak is the fish are all over, sometimes you have to cast a lot before you catch one, but at least your lurer is in the water. When you driving around looking for a spot you are not fishing.
I think there’s something mentally that happens when you launch a kayak versus launching a boat. In a kayak you’ll be more focused on fishing because you can’t cover water far from your launch.
In a boat, all the gadgets and the option to just cruise around seem to take away from being in-tune with your rod & reel.
OMG!!! Marty is come back!
Hello Marty, in winter months around here, there are just about as many bad fishing days as good ( fish not biting ). Nice set up you put together with the extra mounts and electronics and a exquisite trolling motor. LoL. Great video as always. I been thinking about getting a Bass Raider as the lake I fish is the largest man made lake in Texas, and when it gets rough, you need something that can take a beating. We all know thanks to you, that Pelican has great quality and well designed and built.
Hope your next fishing trip is more successful in catching fish. LoL. 73 and GOD bless Earnest K5EWM 👍.
Nice ride !!
LOOKS LIKE A FUN DAY!
I remember when you first started with your 8ft kayak and fished with shrimp and fiddler crabs. You had better luck catching fish then. However, I do like this setup. Better luck next time! Welcome back to Florida.
Live bait wins. Almost always.
The cool factor of triple motors can never be denied! Yet I am forced to wonder - just how would this hull go with a single 15hp instead? Maybe a trial would make a good video??
Faster and easier, but lost among mediocrity. That's not to say I don't often wish for exactly what you suggest.
Marty, In the old red kayak you almost always fished top-water - remember the Heddon super spook - it got me using those in NC waters.
I spent an eternity casting a topwater hoping for that explosion when I would've caught more with other lures. I regret nothing!
I know your vid are all about fishing and yaks but Im really digging your little homestead there , looks very cool Id be concern to leave anyting sitting out where Im at fear of it growing legs . Hope you and the pups are doing well be safe my friend .
I just watched 3 videos in a row where a person attached an outboard motor to themselves. It brought me joy. LOL Robb White is sorely missed. Marty, you should check out his sisters book Mama Makes Up Her Mind. Her name is Bailey White.
I wish it was on Audiobook. Hearing Robb White read his book is a treat.
Cool vid
COOL SET UP...HOW BIG ARE THOSE ENGINES..?
That thing is set up for doing The Great Loop. LOL!!!
Don't let the camera dictate your mood.. it's called fishing and not catching the joy is being out on the water. As we get bigger rigs and gadgets it adds stress...I have it all kayaks to bass boat they all have a place...but just relax and enjoy the time you have to yourself 😎🇺🇸😇🎣
I always give the fish 20 minutes to get used to my boat when i motor into a spot.
Also, theres nothing wrong with talking to yourself, it's just thinking out loud, I find it easier to organize my thoughts that way - if someone starts answering you back, you should probably begin to worry at that point.
Bad day fishing still A good day. 😊 Florida Joe
Maybe you're retrieving the lure too fast. Fish become a bit lethargic during winter months. I know Florida breaks lots of those norms, but varying retrieve speeds could change your luck.
Overjoyed!
Well if you live by yourself and fish by yourself your chances of talking to yourself are high. 😂
Good to see you. How far did you get on the loop....
Sam and Rev! Hi. I made it to Oriental, North Carolina.
Smart use of the engine kill switch. Maybe say afew words about the kill switches. I guess float coats are not available.
You might want to try more than one lure…
also wanted to ask if your able to review other brands im curious what you would think about these lite skiffs ive been seeing they say they are better than a kayak check em out please give us a review. much love from ruskin
apples and oranges. both are tasty
If I'm gonna spend all that money then I want soemthing that can fish the bay and the gulf on a good day
How did you get your boat to look like that?
Must be an infomercial ; no drinking , just slick gear demo.
He built the boat from scratch. Put the motors on made the transom. Rod holders and seats. Troling motor and everything else you see.
Think your improvised trolling motor is too loud. The fish didn't spook but shut down.
How many HP is that boat rated for?
7.5 and arguably, I only have 5 ;^)
Great for spooking fish! 🙄
sickness indeed is that the original boat that had the tri motors? also where are you at looks like your back in tampa bay but cant tell
act yourself and forget the camera, sometimes watching a video of someone being normal is very interesting, why? because everyone can relate to talking to yourself and getting caught in the mangroves. tangleing up there rod tips lol omg if i had a camera on myself look out cause the devil would be right there beside me lmao.
Nice video as always Marty! 🎣 🐟 🛶 people are often lied to by hearing they have to have expensive brand name equipment etc to “have fun” or get work done. The best things are simple-and you get personal accomplishment when you make something yourself or modify something to make it better to fit your own needs.
