Pelican Mode Catch and Cook

- I remember a time when the fish were plentiful. Schools of Jacks would meander about, destroying bait in impressive displays, and bringing home a meal was not that hard to do after a short time on a kayak. Dang! If I'm not sounding like an old man, but even the younger crowd of anglers in Tampa seem to be experiencing the same thing. Perhaps it's a just cycle like so many things in life go through. Or perhaps I've been relying on artificial baits too much? I went out for a few days with the old standby live bait to test the waters. Shrimp could always get me a tug back in the day. And after drowning a bunch, for a bunch of hours, I got a big fat skunk for my efforts. The next day, my little wriggly baits had turned pink and stinky and still failed to slay the competition. One small redfish did play along early on, which only led to me sittin there, floating and hoping in vain for a bunch more hours. Just when my expectations were spent, I remembered my buddy Steve's many successes trolling a paddletail on a jighead. Many folk actually have told me that they seldom paddle along without dragging a lure behind them. 'Just in case'. So, before I gave up the good fight, I worked the artificials that have done me right for so long. Even back in my earliest days of kayak fishing, I'd marvel at how, especially trout, would bite a lure, even when it was doubtful that they were hungry. It was like a territorial thing. They couldn't stand to see such an arrogant little thing waltzing past their spot like it owned the place. And WHAM! Just as it was back then, my little paddle-tailed piece of plastic did the trick. It would seem that fish might learn after years of getting fooled by shrimp, that they ought not eat them! But they haven't yet developed the restraint of willpower to resist the quick little fake lure that presents itself just right. Some things never change. I'm glad I have moved up in the world enough to have access to such nice and comfortable kayaks. And I wonder about where the Jacks are. And why the bite doesn't seem to be as good as it once was. I doubt myself during those times. But when I AM lucky enough to bring home a fish for dinner, I know for sure a technique that always works for cookin em up!

This is such a classic Marty video!! Freakin love it!!! Feels like 10 years ago!!! I actually wore my zoffinger shirt yesterday!!!
It's always so comforting to watch you do one of these videos. Thanks!!!
The kind of buddy I'll be looking for, I don't sense any lies/ talk tails, right to to the point , honest, subscribed
After a day on the water working up a appetite fresh fish for dinner does not get any better! Good to see you getting back to your roots. Thank you Marty👍👍
You are the man. I so enjoy watching your videos.
I honestly believe Piney Point dumping all that polluted water into the bay has effected the inshore fishing. Nice to see ya back my man!
Fort myers has the same problem. Fishing is dead
It is probably the waters from okeechobee. Im in Vero the other side the dump to. Our waters are brown. Every year about this time.
Just a note hope you survived the storm ok let us know
Awesome video, long time subscriber thanks for sharing all of your adventures
Marry, that was real kayak fishing. Now we all have toys, accessories, motors, electronics, and a lot more. It looked beautiful out there. 💯 🛶 🎣
Oh man a cooking vid. Marty, its been so long. I dig it. Still watch the ones from the house years ago.
Loved the throwback pics. You're old school grainy videos of that red kayak and tool boxes were quite an inspiration to me. Thanks and God bless.
Thanks Marty, another great video as always. Some days are better than others as far as catching fish. I'm going to try that poor man hush puppy recipe of yours. 👍.
Unfortunately that area you like to fish is forecast for a major hurricane. Hope you have evacuated well ahead of the storm. 73 and GOD bless, Earnest K5EWM.👍.
So the way I prefer to cook the speckled or sand trout and whiting/croaker is to cook them in a cast iron skillet to sear each side with some olive oil and seasoning (typically Italian). Then put the skillet in the over and bake. Use the oil to drizzle over a salad or the fish…. Also lemons.
Sounds tasty!
Ah yes, classic content! 🙌🏻
Dinner looks delicious. Never though about adding beer to the egg!
That looks delicious Marty….good to see you back making fishing videos again.👍
DANG , NOW I WANT SOME FRESH FRIED FISH....COLESLAW OR GRITS....UMMM.....GREAT VIDEO...👍
AS always my favorite kayak fisherman !!!
Great video and you gotta love Sweet Baby Rays
great Video Marty Keep up the good content. I am from the Pacifica NW and when I was in Florida a few years ago I caught my first sea trout. The fangs freaked me out.
Hey Marty! Just rewatched the x3 Intruder vid. Still love that one! Got to thinking...you ought to make a crazy paddle wheel mechanism to put on a paddle boat. Another crazy build from Marty Z! 😅
Hi Marty...The lack of fish is not limited to Florida's West coast. We in the New Smyrna Beach area are plagued with the same problem. Horrible lack of grass on the flats has meant loss of bait fish and shrimp. Also, no place for the young to hide and grow. It is really bad. Pollution is the grass killer and it seems that little is being done to rectify the situation. Please keep your vids coming. And I'll keep my Zoffinger hat dry.
Good to hear from ya!
very relaxing content ! want more content ! like the simplicity of your videos. i really ejojoyed this video, thanks!
Lots of great editing as always 👍 nice video
Great update thanks Marty! Fishing not good this year here in the UK either. The Supertrawlers have been blamed for hoovering up many 1000's of tons of Fish, disrupting the ecosystem of Fish breeds & stocks. Wouldn't be so bad if they were all being caught for food, but a lot of the catch goes for Fishmeal & fertilisers. That Trout looked delicious! Stay safe & well. 🎣🎣👍👍
Answer your question on episode 12...yes I have used a washing tub & scrub board to do laundry 🧺. Country farm life was not glamours. I did love to explore. At 68yrs. I still love adventure. 🦜
Nice video fella, thank you.
Thanks zoffy you got me into yak fishing a while back, so many great memories catching fish and with friends that I still make often. Glad to see you are doing well. God Bless brother.
Love the videos of you fishing! I enjoy all of your content, but i first met you as you were grabbing crabs, and fishing for Sheepies!! It gave me the itch to fist of all, get a fishing Bass Raider, then a kayak. Later, I had dreams of living in FL and inshore fishing, but I don’t think that is in the cards for me, so bass, bluegill, crappie, and hopefully one day, snakehead will be on my line! Thanks for so many great videos Marty, they have made my life more rich, and enjoyable!!
I was missin ya Marty, good to see ya!
Marty, have a look into barometric pressure shallow fishing. I think you will find your answer.
good to see you back like the old days switched off when you went to do the loop i enjoy watching you fish and kayaking i live in australia and our fishing in rivers and inlets is stuffed also thanks tony australia
Another great video my friend!
this was great , just what i needed ... stay safe in the hurricane , maybe get some footage for us .
Good video, like when Clean fish and cook them. I'm out here in northern California, lots of lakes with trout. Stay safe with this new storm.
💪nor cal
I love these videos! It’s so chill
Glad to see you are still making these videos!
Great video Marty!!!
Thank you Marty, nice to see another vid:) The fish looked great as did the time out on the water.
I have to agree Marty, I fish in bullfrog Creek and the kitchen areas near gibsonton. A couple of years ago almost every time out we would catch fish. Back then variety was s more diverse as well.
looks delicious!
Tasty lookin vittles Marty!!!
Marty I hope you’ll be safe during that hurricane.
love watching your catch and cook. How do you decide what watercraft you are taking out from day to day ?
Damn still cooking like you did all those years ago in that one cooking video you did lol
Have to agree Marty, I am from Crystal River, about an hour or so from Tampa and the fishing has been rough for me as well the past couple of years. Also, in my experience, I have better luck catching Redfish when using "stinky pinkies" lol, but when I use artificial moving baits like the paddle tail you showed I catch more trout.
My absolute favorite type of videos you’ve done, catch and cooks!
I have missed these types of videos from you. Also, I never did find out why you got rid of the boat and what happened to your friend.
Thank you,
Needed a Marty video, god you are perfect.
Yum at the fish. Enjoy your videos so much.
Hush puppies, well, no more waste for me when I cook next fish.
Might not be having bbq sauce though.
Fishing here, we only allowed 1 rod, if you have others with you, they must not have hook n tackle attached.
Take care 😘
Are you safe from the hurricane? I hope so,
Thinking about everyone over there
be safe during the huricane season
Thinking of you all over there in these storm surges, please let us all know that you are ok.
I remember hearing something about a huge pollution runoff problem and Tampa Bay a few years ago. Could be affecting the fishing
Marty, know what would go great with that Red Fish, how about trying a manly beer!
😂🤣😂🤣😂 It was a trout!
Always a joy to see ya out and about in the kayak,..may have shared this with you but you're the reason I bought my kayaks and enjoy fishing from them as well. I have pelican bass raiders also and a 16 ft Tracker..but it's often the slow quiet pace of the kayak that's truly enjoyable. Appreciate all you do and share.☺️🇺🇸😎🛶🎣
Eat mode and edit mode all at the same time. what mode will you take? :) great job getting that word stuck in our heads. :)
man i used to catch so much fish i remember putting a little rattle trap out and it would catch 2 jack crevalle on it over and over again they would go crazy now you have to try so hard with live bait and correct rigs maybe its just me i have no clue
Smaller fish of all species definitely taste better.
Hey bud I learned BFC , behind Mike's, has the reds stacked up. Burned through 2 dozen shrimp in an hour with the wife.
Also hooked a bull shark. Felt like I was watching one of your old school videos
Fishing is great if you can get away from the popular spots. But the 500k captains constantly chumming ever day of the week I’ve kill most places
I need to upload a video of the EASIEST way to filet a speck. I think you would be blown away...
👊😎👍
You mentioned the fishing was worse around Tampa in past years but how did it compare to Morehead City?
Brah no ways u uses to eat ur fish black and crispy. Lol the red kayak og days. I soooo remember u over cooking reds lol..
hey dont know if you"ll see this but ive got a pelican bass raider 8 but im wanting to get a bass raider 10e i was wondering if you could give me advice cause i want to put a 1998 6 hp 2 stroke on it, but im wondering how i should reinforce the transom
BBQ sauce? Da hell…
Do you still own your twin engine cabin cruiser?
Glad to see you still going. . .
I remember when your red kayak mods videos were hot!!!
Party for hurricane idalia 023
Red tide and population growth play a big part. Florida is the fastest growing state. Population growth causes pollution and overfishing. I rarely catch redfish, but I do catch quite a few trout, all undersized. I think this indicates a lot of pressure on the fishery.
I recently found your channel & subscribe. I am on the episode where you have three motors on a plastic bass boat. I read the comments. I will say you are learning boat ownership. You can never have to much redundancy. I don't know how far back you read our comments so I fast forward this one. 🦜
Was wondering do you still have stickers Have a new truck but something is missing
Did the boat ever sell?
Yo Marty, what's up with Kon Tiki? Sold?
Eh Marty try bleeding out your fish next time. You’ll get a really nice white fillet with no blood. We do this with our Walley up here in Canada. Taste much better.
Canada... Florida... Yeah same thing... NOT!
To many people in this area. All the oils and man made dirt running off the streets into the bays. Flooding, causing sewers to rise. I'm sure you know. It's been a good 20 years here, but I'm ready to get out of here.
Good please leave

Compared with my areas in Maryland its sh!tty so better than our tributaries 😭😡🤬
Good thing your on a boat i hear theres pythons out there
Tampa Bay unfortunately has been the dumping grounds for commercial plants and surrounding cities raw sewage. The sewage is the reason for y’all’s repeated red tide cycles which in turn as we all know kills the fish. This is so sad.
4c Breadcrumbs are way better
when r u going to get back on the loop?
Are you ok???
Sorry buddy but the fishing is definitely not as good as it used to be. I'm.down in Bradenton and it's been very tough lately. But maybe it's just me
Of course , Hafta have Gay Beer .
Unsubscribed.
Effin troll!
🤣keep thinking that I live in Tampa and have all my life find more spots u don’t put the work in 👎
