The Great Loop 061 Heading to Jacksonville

  • One problem I was having with the new motors was that the fresh water and salt water hoses on the risers and manifolds were backwards. During the engine swap during the haulout in Glades Boat Yard, the hoses were put back as they were when I got the boat. They just must've been backwards the whole time I owned her! Mike and I were aware that something was amiss, but it took several phone calls from a man with a repair shop to convince us that the hoses were indeed the problem. I wish I remembered the guy and his business because he was very generous with his time and patient with our ignorance. After switching the hoses, I was disappointed to see that one was still losing water, but one seemed fixed. And now they were finally able to get up to a proper temperature without seawater constantly flushing through the closed (antifreeze) part of the engine blocks. That meant that I finally started getting readings from my temperature gauges which I thought had never worked. It turned out that they just never got hot enough to move the needles more then just a hair over the minimum readout.
I had travelled quite a bit since the engine swap. And many people had generously contributed towards the cost. And the idea that we might ruin something because of installation error on our part was eating at me a lot. Mike and I continued pushing ahead though. What else was there to do? Until we knew what exactly the problems were, there was little that could be done except keep an eagle eye on those gauges and be ready should something go kablooey. It was stressful, but at this point, we felt like we were closing in on the water loss issues. The only other thing we could think of was a bad heat exchanger. And there was one that I could use waiting for us in Jacksonville...

Cool trip Marty, your trips are what a lot of us old guys wanted to do but just never did or could not, so its very cool to at least follow a true out door explorer following his passion, very few people have the drive to do that like you have.

Glad you're back Marty! As said already, don't feel obligated to continue the loop. As positive as you are, it's often looking like it's turned into a chore to continue on the Great Loop. Nothing wrong with heading back to the Tampa area and just making fishing videos for a while!!

Hey Marty, been following for a few years now. I’m glad you are doing you, but I’m happy to see more loop videos. No matter your future plans, I know you will still enjoy life, and I hope you document it for the rest of us. I’m contemplating selling all I own and doing the loop myself, but it can be hard to uproot oneself. Props to you Marty for being able to follow your heart and do what is right for you!

I think it’s time let the boat sail away an go back to fishing. Lugging an engine around is horrible. Water pump doesn’t turn fast enough to effectively cool engine. Oil pressure is lower. Not enough cylinder heat to properly keep combustion chamber clean and burning efficient. Brand new engines should be able to run full tilt. Should be a sweet spot around 75% where you will get a great mpg

If you’re dragging anchor, you need more chain out. My parents lived on a 45 foot Jenneau, we let about 20 feet of chain sit on the sea bed. Never dragged more than 15 feet of it even in 1m chop. (That was a rough night)
