  • I was hunting tarpon, so I had the big tackle with me. There were no silver kings around, so I went after a shark instead. The manatee getting involved was totally unexpected.
    Turned out to be a good lesson on fighting big fish.

    One of the best fishing films I've seen on 'the tube', love the editing & the Jaws references.
    My Son's pal in N.S.W. Australia paddled out of a little creek near Cabarita NSW & hooked into a VERY big fish that took him out over the reef miles out to sea. There's a story with photo's on an Aussy. kayak fishing magazine or site.

    I've never seen this type of fishing done before, and it appears to be extremely amusing. I found the best parts of this video to be the sheer enjoyment of the act, the excitement of the matinee and shark combined and the reaction from being in "unknown territory" with these large animals.
    I also greatly enjoyed the end, where he shares a critical lesson in fishing (which in my mind is an extension of hunting via. many ways to perform the action) that patience is important, but so is properly preparing yourself mentally for the task at hand and how hard it is to be prepared when you've never experienced something like this before. Learning is good, even if mistakes are made, and I'm sure by his reaction he will pass on his newly acquired knowledge with enthusiasm and respect to future fishers.
    Congratulations on a good hunt, and best wishes for many more. Thank you for sharing.

    Looks like you need to ditch the Flurocarbon, and get some seven strand, sleeves, and a crimping tool.
    I dont think that your drag had anything to do with the line breaking.... when the shark was running your line was parallel with the shark, i noticed both break offs were almost identical... the shark was in close and the your rod was at a high angle with the line at a steep angle to the sharks mouth. He shook his head and all those sharp teeth cut your line. You need wire marlin wire or seven strand.

  • @jefferyshall
    @jefferyshall Před 9 lety +1

    Two questions:
    1. What happens to the hook and the extra line left over when the shark, or any fish, breaks your line?

    • @YutyrannusRex
      @YutyrannusRex Před 9 lety

    Good Bull man, enjoyed the fight, your right correct operation of drag is essential.. Id recommend some seven strand 135lb# plus cable, and nicopress crimps. It takes time man, when they see that boat it seems like they get a second wind.

    Got hooked up to a big shark off the rocks a few nights back, within 30 seconds it had bit through my 80 pound leader.
    An hour later got hooked up to it again, and again it bit through the 80 pound leader.
    Switched to wire leader and didn't get one after that.

    • @tireballastserviceofflorid7771
      @tireballastserviceofflorid7771 Před 8 lety

      +Retz Finicky sharks hate wire leaders as well as un-coated cable. The wire reacts with the salt water and creates a current that the sharks can detect for miles. Coated leaders greatly reduce the current in the water and are flexible. I have had half a dozen 6' blacks and reefs on a single leader before cutting and re-crimping. My rigs are all 6' plus and 100# plus with ball bearing swivels. Don't forget to remove the barb unless you are harvesting the shark and use carbon steel hooks for when you lose one or are forced to cut it off.

    It's even a good idea to loosen up the drag when you get them near the boat when you think they are shot. Sometimes a fish will make a last chance dash for freedom when they get to the boat so a tight drag will break em off. And be careful with those sharks. We don't want any missing Marty parts.

    Marty- maybe a little bigger stronger rod, with maybe a level wind reel, with more drag, longer stronger rod easier on you , more drag on reel tires fish out quicker. I'm really surprised he stayed hooked that long without a wire leader. All the Best, man- love you're videos. P.s. I'm up here in the Outer banks.

    Hey Zof, I have seen sharks go crazy and bite anything when they realize they are done. They will actually try take a bite out of the boat, and try to get in there with you. You have outfitted your kayak beautifully, far better than the way it came from the factory, and much better than many nice fishing boats I have seen. I want it. OK, I need to go sit down, for a few minutes, relax, and have a cold drink. I feel like I just watched Jaws for the first time.
