- Can I put a 9.8hp motor on a boat designed for a 3.5? Well, I do! The real question is, 'Should I?' It is a stout, iconic boat that I have successfully overpowered in the past but this time I may have found it's limits.

your time in quarantine is literally more exciting than our normal lives
Those cleats look perfectly positioned for broken toes
Where else would you put them? Every dock I've ever seen had em the same. I'm probably wrong.
@@effyoo6081 Where have you seen a dock with cleats in the middle of the dock?
I usually see them located near the edge of the dock.
@@JB-jt9kd that is the edge of dock. It has an movable extension
@@effyoo6081 that has nothing to do with where the cleats are placed. They are at least 18 inches from the edge. Cleats are typically within 2 inches of the edge.
@@effyoo6081 I didn't think I need to specify but I'm talking about the cleats that Marty talked about. The ones he installed to hang the boat from
Who would thumb down any video Marty puts out,I love them all, keep living the dream Marty
These are the videos I miss so much. I have been watching for a very long time.
Awesome video Marty, looked very unstable but looked like a lot of fun. You should probably wear some sort of small flotation just to be safe. Long swim. Stay safe
Morning Coffee with Marty. Thanks for sharing your fun!!!
The balance was freaking me out … you're a brave man, Marty! Thanks for entertaining us 😁👍
Great job on the transom reinforcement!
I love boats. I remember when I was a kid, my grandad put a new 15hp Johnson on a Jonboat that was rated at 6 😆 yeah that flew! Great fun. This video cheered me up
ive seen people slap 125hp on jon boats rated for 25 and it has 0 trouble back it also barely flexing so they say rated for 25 but you can add a 1 to the front of that and yes that jon boat leaves the water at top speed when it hits a wave
I love my bass raider!!! Talk to Pelican and see if they can make a 14 ft version rated for a 9.8 to a 15 hp. That would be awesome. It would have to be a little wider. Keep making them great videos!!!
Pelican now has a new plastic version Jon boat 12 ft.
Good afternoon! Would love to see a video of you giving a in dept demo on how you used star board to strengthen the transom on the Bass Raider 10E. I surely love mine also. I'm really thinking about adding a motor to mine also.
Yeah I'd love to know how he strengthened the transom. I saw another CZcamsr that used 1x6 to build a brace. But did he do like he did on the x3 build and drill and pour foam in or what?
@@cjlloyd81
i don't think you need to.
a light suzuki motor will be perfect for it.
Thanks for keeping me laughing and just shaking my head. Thanks also for making the coffee break a little better. Tight lines. 😎
You really have some great videos! And because of you and your videos I just got my hands on a Johnson 4.0 hours power that I will be pulling on my pedal boat!
Hey Marty if you put hooks on the end of the ropes you use to hold the Bass Raider up you could unhook it quicker than untie it.. Just a thought loving the vlog style vids too..
That's one of the things I really like about you Marty. You tried it, seen it wasn't safe and said so. So I'm pretty sure you won't try a motor on your floating fishing chair. Well, I hope not!
Cleats are gonna get somebody
Why? Maybe someone who has never been on a dock and don't know there are cleats. Every respectable dock had em just the same. I'll bet your little pigs are hogs.
Not your dock, not your decision.
I’m hearing the last couple videos in only the left ear, anybody else?
Same, I'll give Marty a call tomorrow and let him know when the shop opens
I'm super late to the party but because of you im getting one of these within the month as soon as taxes come in so hyped
That was great! Try running it with the engine one or two holes out on the transom mount. It may spray a little less. Also, just sit on a cushion down low and see how fast it goes on glassy water.
Knowing you Marty, you will soon put on a jack plate and steering/throttle/shift controls. Toss in a SST prop for good measure.
I agree. Get rid of that stupid chair and sit down low. That thing will fly.
It's a no brainer.
@@jeffplease8334 Many years ago, I put a 9.5 hp Johnson on a small dingy and sat backwards with my feet against the transom. I had two ropes going through screw eyes at each end of the transom to steer it.
I had to put both ropes in one hand while pushing the throttle up all of the way. The engine was missing the tiller/throttle handle but had a small lever to advance and retard the throttle.
The boat really flew and the real excitement was when attempting to slow down. Crazy, but fun times.
And that's what I would call living your best life!!
I hope you are. 🎣😎
These experiments are awesome
lol, that's awesome Marty :) Thank you for trying that one out.
Great video. Enforce the transom with some 3/4 plywood like a sandwich. That 9 would be rockin better than ever..
Marty, Love the video's your the reason I got a Pelican Bassraider. But do us all a favor and wear a life vest. Your on the water by yourself and accidents happen. I was unfortunate to see a gentleman die at the dock when he fell in and drowned. Get one of those auto inflating ones, they are easy to wear.
I have to agree with Dean on this one Marty. We would all snort our coffee out our noses laughing if you tripped on that cleat, but nothing funny about death in a boating accident. Love you man.
yes a longer video thank you marty
Zoffinger, the King of unusual water craft.
Love it. Can you show what you did to strengthen the transom? I see that you built some brackets but what ware they made from? Also just subbed.
Good morning Marty !!
I was wondering if you had a video on your transom modification for the bass raider?
sold my pelican bass raider last week and all that was on there and bought a 17ft boat with a 50hp merc cant wait but i sure am going to miss my little boat man great memories
Now that you have, like (5) of those Coleman engines, how do you like them? Had any issues? Where would you take one that needed warranty work? Thanks.
What about a 7.5hp outboard motor do you think that will be fine without modifying the transom?
Keep pushing the limits
Hay man, love your videos👍
when will the power 100
Be available?
Hey Marty , if and when we get some rain , wont it fill with water ?
Lookin close to 30mph at one point on a 10ft jon boat!
did you video making that transom reinforcement?
Haha if marty says its not safe....ITS NOT SAFE lol.
Do you find the cleats as a trip hazard?
Maybe place an orange cone on them
Damn where else would you find a cleat but the edge of a dock. Y'all crazy
Eff Yoo look again crazy it’s in the middle of the walkway 🙄
It is fun reading the replies of people getting this bent out of shape over something this trivial. Very interesting.
That part of the dock is blocked off. The only ones that would be on it know the cleats are there. I see your point and would worry if it was a main walkthrough.
Good test and nice video. Can you do a video on fish and wild life in your area. Would love to learn about it.
The black reinforcement brace in the back or is that what it is. Did you make it or can it be purchased?
Thanking you for your input in advance.
Enjoy waking up and watching a daily video. Any fishing though?
How did you mount that bracket to prevent flex?? Have a video for that??
Marty, did you build that motor support out of the starboard. If so how did you build it and do you think i will need to add support to my Bass Raider. I have a 5 hp. nissan it's (57 lbs) and im 160 lbs.
Any chance you sell the reinforced transom mount
Hi! What screws do you suggest for screwing in accessories on a plastic boat? I have a basstender 11.3
What kind of brackets are those to help support your boat from flexing with your outboard. Thanks
I'm trying to catch you before you get to many comments. Your a crafty man, I'm asking if you have any ideas to store reels, not rod and reels. Just the reels it self. Thanks and God bless. Hope to hear back.
Can u make a video on how you upgraded the transom for the bass raider
is there a simple solution to making the transom sturdy?
i have a lot of options in used motors around 6-9 hp,
and considering i'll be upgrading boats i want as much power as it can take
Maybe a 5 hp engine would be perfect for that boat with a strengthened transom mount. I own the same boat and I had to watch this video for educational purposes. But yeah, that 9.8 is a suicide waiting to happen.
Just moved to Woodstock, Va over a year ago and we want to visit Moomaw. Just bought a 1984 14' V hull Aluminum Lowe Jon Boat. Just my wife and I (about 330lbs combined) with gear, wood decking, two trollers, 2 batteries. Are you still happy with this motor? You think it can push us along? Not looking to break speed records just save batteries and move a bit quicker.
Hello Marty, love your channel and the content you put out. Kinda courses what camera equipment you use most of the time. I alway see you with a lapel mic. And wonder how you use that with a gopro.
Love the videos buddy. Keep them a coming..
Would you mind showing more on your transom mod?
What is the boat that motor cam off of?
Have a great day.
Patrick
How are you turning the camera on the pole?
What was the boat you took the motor off in beginning?
What did you use to reinforce the transom?
Excellent
The 9.8 Tohatsu is a famous engine, nice choice.
Did he make a video on the transom bracing build?
Very interesting videos!
I'm very curious to know how many mph do reach with your 5 hp? I'm sure every other bass raider owners would also like to know. Could you test run it with a gps to get mesurement? It would be MUCH apreciated!
I literally have the exact same question
@@jakes8545 I tried a 6hp with the pelican and since mine was kinda loaded with a big groupe 31 battery and a 55# tm in the front, i was getting the same speed as with my yam 2.5hp (4-5mph) it was only pushing more water no planing. I concluded before switching to a 20hp 14ft v hull aluminum that the bass raider is an exellent electric only fishing platform but by desing not intended for speed. I kinda miss the stability sometimes but when hitting 25 mph i amlost forget about it 😂.
How do you keep the staples in the boat from rusting from the salt water btw do you have the volume turned down it's hard to hear you.
Which boat do you like better between the two..
Lower your seat and you’d pick up quite a bit of stability and speed. With a 9hp that’s a quick bass raider. With it being a plastic boat I’d say you found the max hp a bass raider 10e can handle. Cool videos man
Are you going to try it on the catch 100?
Do you have any idea of how fast you were going?
Any rust after using it in saltwater?
Can you do another video with the triple engine boat pls.
Stay safe and god bless
Just wondering can you put the bass raider in the ocean
What size motor is that sir
How fast you goin ?
I wish i have a house like you Sir... fishing, boating right the door... 😂😂
Marty, did you make a video of the transom modification made to the 10E? If so please send me a link. I have a 10E with a 4HP motor and the transom flexes like crazy. You should sell it as a kit!!! I would definitely buy one.
I'm going to order a 5 or 6hp for mine. I have a 2.5 right now and it is way too slow
i would love to contact you or see a video about your transom support design on your bass raider 10, its the cleanest design i've seen.. I want to do that to my bass raider.. i have an old 5hp Coleman lawnmower engine style boat motor, it creates a lot of flex..
Por favor mándame un vídeo de como reforzaste el espejo de popa de la base rider 10e soy tu fan de México
Would it be easier to just tie carabiner clips to the rope and then use the clips to hold the boat up? That way you don't have to tie and untie to ropes each time.
actually handled it well
A 2 Stroke 9.9 would be sweet on it!
try putting carabiners where the rope attaches to the bass raider to avoid untieing
The people complaining about the cleats wouldn't be happy boating in western Montana. Pretty much every public dock, and the vast majority of the private ones, have cleats just like those along the docks. If someone doesn't possess enough common sense to walk on the center of a dock and exercise extra caution while boarding a boat, then they have no business being on the dock or near a boat to begin with.
His cleats are in the center of the dock,.
You should put two or three on the center console you built
Why don't you build a slope on the end of your dock to easily slide the boats into the water.
chinewalking the ol bass raider lol
put a GPS App on your phone to see just how fast your going..... Thanks for sharing!
You really should wear a PFD especially running risky tests, and advise all your customers to also. I know you’re grown and I’m not your mentor or mother, but they’ve saved me several times. I’ve had several close friends drown for not wearing them. When it happens, it’s too late. RFKs granddaughter and her child just died trying to get a ball (real quick) that entered the water..it happens that fast. I hate to lecture so I’ve said my piece. I love your channel and videos! Take care Marty..and stay safe! 👍
a little ballast in the front maybe....
Any boat is always dangerous going over the manufacture recommended HP.
Bad ass
I wish I could get a boat like one of them. I cant find a yak that is cheap that will hold my weight. I guess I am just not ment to own another boat of any kind.
cool
You forgot your beer
Enjoy your “tests”... and your common sense : )
“Keep up the Good... umm Great... work” !!!
Put the boat on slides trash rollers to go under the dock like a drawer
Pit three 9.8s on the intruder x3
Hey Marty, just letting ya know the the audio is kinda messed up :)
You looked terribly uncomfortable at speed.
Too much fun there is no such thing lol
Marty, maybe you should look into a smaller maybe 13 ish footer Boston Whaler. Looks perfect and a lot more convenient for what you use your smaller boats for. Just a thought
