      You wouldn't happen to know the dimensions for a 57s water pump? I've heard some may be a for different models and look similar to a 57s pump but doesn't really fit like it should. Just seeing if anyone has insight before I order and take my lower apart

    Great video ! Have a problem when I install the flywheel seams to drag the plate with the coils on it . ? I used a tool to locate the coils .

    • @4Da_Tech
      @4Da_Tech Před 4 lety

      If you are striking the fly wheel, either your coil are too large(happened to me on generic coils) or you did not have them aligned correctly. Note the ring tool he uses. Very important to align the coil before snugging screws down...

    So if you don't have the coil gap ring what's plan b? Is there a measurement across the contacts of the coils?

    Brandon I watch your excellent videos all the time and have a question regarding these NONA @ chips replacing points on outboard engine. I have watched all the videos on youtube on this transition away from points. It seems every one of them converts a engine that uses the under flywheel coils like your johnson. I have tried on two occasions to use the chips on a 115 hp evinrude with charge coil and points ignition under flywheel that has exterior coils mounted on block. No spark at all even after reversing the polarity on the chips. >Help ORLANDO FL THANKS

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  Před 5 lety

      Well, that is a completely different setup.
      Magnet in your flywheel are designed for CDI units.
      The NOVA chips are for the points and breaker type ignitions, and are not compatible; thus, why you see them in setups similar to mine.

    I have heard some bad and some good on those transistors but I haven’t worked with them yet ! Think the plug things bad a buddy put the stater plate on backwards ! Lol. I was always taught that never spin it over without both plugs in and grounded , never do one at a time , what’s your thoughts ? The 58’s are by far one of my favorites right up there with the 1954 QD-15 10 hp , just completed my collection of Holiday Bronze 5 1/2hp’s ( 56,57,58 ) ! I have 3 grandkids ! Lol. You do have some OEM tools there but look into buying a Magneto Synchronizer ( single ) you will never hand gap your points again ! No need to disconnect the points ever again !

    Do they make an affordable flywheel puller for the 2003 Mercury 15hp 2 stroke? I looked on eBay and can’t seem to find one for the smaller 6/8/9.9/15hp. All the pullers on eBay say 40+hp. Would appreciate your help, im sure you know more than I do lol.

    Let us know how these Nova II's work once you get this QD motor running. I tried them a few years ago in an early 70's Johnson and they kept burning out. They only lasted anywhere from a few seconds to less than an hour so hopefully they have improved the quality of the components in them since then. By comparison, the red Atoms I've tried haven't let me down yet.

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  Před 5 lety

      One, lasted about 3 minutes, the other just past 10.

      @@BrandonsGarage Dang, just what I was afraid of. We've had some deep conversations about transistor modules for these motors over at AOMCI.org and one knowledgeable person explained how the Darlington transistor used in the Nova II's couldn't handle the voltage spikes found in the older OMC mags. They need the red Atoms!

    With plugs out to test spark i use a socket and variable speed drill which makers it much easier but you should not use it to try and start one with a drill unless you can come op with a ratcheting adapter that lets it slip if it starts or it can loosen the nut and back it off and could damage key way if its started to run or throw the socket and adapter in your face lol so far i have n0ot found a adapter rached i can use that will racket if it should start letting it slip
