It's so refreshing to have Christian content on CZcams, thank you for posting your videos. No Spend Year sounds like such a good idea. I failed miserably with that this year, was going to be 'no spend 2017' for me. This is a great opportunity to get back on it. I think I'd like to join you! x

We are a family of six and we did a no spend January and again this month. I love it because God has blessed us so much my freezer was bursting with food so was my pantry and fridge. I stopped and thought why am I still grocery shopping? Now we are on a journey of using everything and selling things we don't use. It feels so good to have space in the house.

I love your perspective on spending. I'm going to implement the made do attitude here also. I wanted to say thank you for mentioning the book The secrets of your naturally skinny friends. I'm finding so much freedom in not worrying about food and working out so hard every day. It is bringing joy to my heart to like working out again because I'm not beating myself up over not doing enough.

Dear Joy, I just discovered your channel. You're such a beautiful person, inside and out! And although I think you're completely crazy about all the things you're giving up buying for a whole year, I completely get it. You are so brave. As a matter of fact, I've started a minimalist journey two years ago and decided last week to go on a three-months shopping ban. First, I thought only clothes, but you are making me reconsider extending it to more areas. Maybe not books, but house ware, makeup and eating out definitely. Except for taking my 18 year old daughter out for a tête à tête at a restaurant as a graduation present. I am 44, divorced mom of three teenage kids and live in Switzerland btw, and I am sending you lots of love and encouragement for your journey.

Joy, I just love how Jesus is working. Doing less for yourself so you can be free to do more for others. Uganda has a special way of doing that to a person. When I first started coming to Uganda in 2011 my entire life changed. Jesus broke me in the sweetest of ways. I went from living in a 3300 square foot home with my family of 5 to a 1200 square foot home. My desire for "more" became less so I could have "more" for others. It makes BIG space for Jesus. It was super hard on my children but when they were in Uganda with me for the first time this February, they got it. Jesus softened them in such ways and oh how I pray they too will have a heart for the widows and the orphans. I applaud your honesty and your bravery!!! 💕💕💕 Love and hugs!! -Michele Hendrix (I'm signed in under our ministry name)

I just want to say that I have LOVED your videos ever since I found them a few months ago! I get so excited when you post a new one, because I love them all! You are not only blessing those on the mission field, but your also a blessing to mom's like me. I am a SAHM to two boys, age 5&1. I am usually struggling with balancing my faith, my duties as a mother and wife, my home, etc., but it feels so nice to have a Christian friend to listen to. I think of you as a mentor, a mom/sister I wish I had. Thank you so much for what you do! Your videos bring this overwhelmed & lonely 24 year old mama a fresh perspective when I need it most!

Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. My grandmother used to say this and I now find myself repeating it when I want to purchase yet another t-shirt or new beauty products. I hope you will continue to share updates and even stories about what you did instead of spending money. I loved what you said about instead of lunch with the girls they will be coming over and enjoying a baked good with you.

Hi! I applaud your 'no spend plan'! I think it is really refreshing to see something like this on CZcams land. I will not, per say, do a no spend year myself since I do not purchase that very much. I am your age, single and just got on the property market so my money goes into renovating my home (hot water heater and all). It's an old place and quite run down but hey at least it's mine! I have some tips though since I had to be really careful with my money if anyone is interested...
    1) I was gifted a kindle ten years ago and use it to read with my kindle unlimited membership. Yes it does cost a little money but nothing compared to real books. I use to spend a fortune on those so a good saving.
    2) Food. I am French and so, like many of my peers, not keen on processed food. I cook everything from scratch with some extras to freeze. A lot can be done with left-overs so no wastage and I whizz at cooking something delicious but cheap to have friends around instead of going out.
    3) Going out is very expensive where I live so I always look for activities organised outdoors that are free. It's a great way to meet people and get some fresh air.
    4) Unless absolutely necessary to buy brand new, I buy a lot of what I need second-hand. Furniture, clothes etc. I avoid over packaged goods and generally things which have a high carbon footprints as much as possible. I was cast out from my religious community but I still very much think that stewardship and taking care of the environment should not be a choice but a duty when possible.
    5) I was on a no spend plan for a really long time and felt that it could be quite punishing in certain situation like systematically declining all invitations to go out so I now allow myself 2.5% of my earnings (50 euros) per months for going out with friends or going to the hairdressers once in a while.
I am very much looking forward to your updates on you no spend plan journey. Take care.

This video is so inspiring and convicting. God has been tugging on my heart & challenging me to be more obedient with my finances . I think all of those categories for no spending are also ones that I need to follow. But NO ONLINE SHOPPING is that even possible ?! It would be so hard but what a great way to show God that I am willing to give up these material things for his glory & open up more space for Him . Thanks Joy I always enjoy your videos you are one awesome woman of God! ❤️

Love your videos. Definitely not open to a spend no money ban, but we are definitely simplifying our lives. Using up all of the makeup, skin care, bath and shower stuff before we buy more. Decluttering and donating stuff we don't need. Thrift store shopping for clothes, shoes, house stuff. I could not give up eating out! I hope you stick to your goals! God bless!

I live out in the country where internet is sparse and too slow to watch anything on CZcams; so whenever I get a chance to connect to fast internet I catch up with your videos. I've been reading your posts beginning with the one about the ugly couch (years back). That just captured my attention. You're very candid and it's very refreshing! So you'll remember this, because I got the book recommendation from you!! In Monica Swanson book on food freedom she mentions a quote along the lines of freedom doesn't come without responsibility. And just from listening to IF: online bible study of Enjoying Jesus, discussing spiritual disciplines, grace tends to over-shadow self-discipline, at least I find it true in my life. So your video on discipline in your finances has definitely shed light in some areas that I spend where I shouldn't. A relational conflict that I struggle to address turns into....look at the cutest tanks I got for summer. Or, I'm having a pity party today, so I deserve that $5.75 favorite tea from the tea shoppe, even though I told myself I would only get one tea a week during bible study with a friend. So this has sparked those Holy Spirit nudges to be more disciplined in more spending. Please keep us posted on the journey....And I know you mentioned sharing how you are going to keep up your reading soon, would love to hear what you've been reading, as I've always connected with your book recommendations!

thank you for sharing your perspective. after cutting down and restricting for a loonnng time and then a situationally forced no-buy, im finally able to purchase some of the things i need and want. but after watching this video, im happy to keep in mind this perspective while i do make purchases. it really is so easy to slide into materialism. i'm a very thoughtful buyer, but i'm inspired to approach my purchases now even more thoughtfully, and to look at what i already have with even more contentment.

I'm fascinated by other peoples routines! I'm a psychologist and work with people with eating disorders so I've also loved your discussions around listening to your body etc. AND I'm a 44yo mum of 3 so it's great to hear you're also juggling kids - so many inspiring you tubers are in their 20s without kids. Sorry, long comment. Keep doing what you're doing!! Xox

  • @MichelleMom2My3bl3ssings

I have always been a frugal person but would always take advantage of sales. Now I hardly will buy anything. As a stay at home mom I ask myself the "why am I buying this and wouldn't this money be better spent on an experience or my kids future?" I recently watched the documentary True Cost and that has helped me even more not to spend. Great video.

I am definitely on board for the 10 items clothes. I think its great you are going to undertake this change to your life. As much as I aspire to do that I need to take baby steps. We have stopped eating out which was pretty easy since we dont eat meat so there is not much for us to eat when going out. I have drastically cut back on wine. Like one bottle per month and I hope to be able to cut that out by the end of the year. I know that with all of these material things in our life there is less space for god and family so I totally get the reason. I'm planning to do the no-spending year. I'm going to leave eating out, which we do once a week at a little hole in the wall place. That's a community involvement thing for us, as is buying some more African fabric for head to toe outfits. I'm still building up my culturally appropriate wardrobe. We're pretty minimalist anyway, so some things won't change. ;) The biggest thing for me is going to be not buying myself any books. I love to read, and I have bought way too many- especially the "Kindle deals." I could spend a whole year just reading those :) We also belong to a library in the US that lets us check out Kindle books.

I thrifted a couple of skirts as I just started a new job. I think i can do it again. I thought I will do it again in August. Not ready for a year as I grew up living on nothing. To pare down and actually use well the things I already have seems both a refreshing and a scary task. I loved your 10 item wardrobe and immediately wanted to search the web for African inspired necklace and earrings because they looked so beautiful on you. Online shopping, Pinterest and yes sometimes CZcams spikes my desire to purchase things I see other people with. Great plan. Hope you are successful. I wanted to offer a suggestion seeing as to how much you love plants and you want to spend more time with God. Maybe you can find free" places to visit that are vegetative and lush to be alone with God and enjoy the gardens. Walks in areas where there are many plants and flowers are great. While walking and spending time alone with God you can collect samplings, sprigs of plants that you enjoy and grow your own at home. Put them in water to let them grow roots and have a new hobby of growing your own window plants. Hope this helps.

I get so excited when I see you have posted a new video! Also, thank you for recommending the Jennifer Scotts vlog. I have really enjoy that. Just curious, did you hand sew that quilt or do you machine quilt? It looks beautiful! Thank you so much for the video!

I pieced it with a machine and then hand quilted it! So glad you are here! Do you quilt?

If you get a chance search for the "Wartime Farm" from BBC. There was a LOT of 'made do & mend' going on during the WWII, rationing was very severe.

I am trying this now for two weeks...I know it sounds pathetic compared to a year! We are on furlough in the US so I would like to try this for a longer period when we are back in Indonesia. Does your non eating out include eating out for evening meal as a family on a limited basis say as a break for your own cooking at home or as a back up plan when your plans for dinner don't work out ? :)

Have you blogged about those 1st years in Alaska? Sounds like a trying season - I'd love to read about it!
My husband and I committed two weeks ago to becoming debt free. I too want to get to a place to being able to give generously as a good steward. So many hearts in need of our interaction and care.

Hey Morgan, I haven't actually blogged about it or made a video about it. Mostly because I always want to be respectful of the people that we served {and are still friends with} up there. But I may share a video about it one day soon. :) Thanks!!! I love your heart and your smile. Every time I see you pop up on Facebook you make me happy. :)

    Hi,
I followed you for a bit on MomHeart when my daughter was born 5 years ago, and I just found your Instagram :)
I love these videos. We are trying to save money for a domestic adoption in Texas, so these no spend ideas are perfect. Can you briefly say a bit more about what saying yes to God means? Thank you, and God bless your family.

You don't have to give up the Korean and Indian food just because you aren't eating out! If you learn to cook these things you can have them anytime you want, assuming you have access to the ingredients of course. I really like some of the recipes from cookinglight.com. Good luck with your project.

I'm with you all the way, but to cut out wine - for a whole year, sorry girlfriend! ;-) Maybe your friends bring wine, instead of flowers for dinner! Joking! You are a bit strict with yourself I believe, I do agree on the no spend periods, but life happens, and you might need new socks, or a nice pair of pantyhose under your dress for Christmas. Or a facial cream. (I have very dry skin) I have a small budget for clothes, for the three of us in the family, but we dont spend money on clothes every month, so I save it for later.

Hi Joy! Your video is super inspiring! Thank you! You are hundred times right it is much more important to focus on others' needs than on yourself and buying piles of clothes and whatever.. Greetings from Russia!!

Definitely not joining in for the year! 😉 We are going on furlough this year and there are many things we need (and want) before coming back for another 4 years. 😇 I have done unnecessary buying bans at various times and do think it is important to bring that area under subjection now and then. We definitely disagree on the alcohol thing, but if I only talked to those who perfectly agree with me I wouldn't talk to anyone. 😅 Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful year of purposeful living ahead of you.
