I heard a pastor's wife say one time, "Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is take a nap!" I totally agree! 😊 Thank you for the GENTLE reminder. 💕

It is so true. The Lord Himself has given us these rhythms of rest built into nature, creation, and how Jesus lived and walked on the earth! :) Thanks for the comment. Much love.

It makes sense that you would subconsciously try to control things when so much of your life felt out of control. I'm glad you had those around you to help you give yourself some grace. I'm looking forward to seeing your 10 item wardrobe. I love Jennifer L Scott, and I always try to do a 10 item wardrobe, too.

YOU are calming. Who needs tea and a nap? Just listen to a Joy video! Lol!

  • @makewomanhoodbiblicalagain1295

I love that you made a distinction at the beginning between taking care of yourself and the “self-care” trend. Such an important distinction to be made in these times when it’s so accepted (and even applauded) to be “lovers of self!”

    • @JoyForney
      @JoyForney  Před 5 lety +4

Yes! It is very near and dear to my heart to make that distinction. I'm pretty appalled by our "treat yo' self" culture even in the church, while there are people perishing around the world for lack of clean water or access to food and safety. So I am very mindful of being gentle with myself without falling into a self-focused lifestyle. Thanks for your great comment!! Much love.

I had missed your videos a few weeks ago and found out via Instagram about the accident. I'm praying for you, your husband, and your family as you all continue to heal. God is love, and He is so good. This video really spoke to my heart. No major tragic incident last year, but I had a lot of stress. Thank you for sharing this!! I so need to make gentle my word for 2019 too! In the past year, I’ve have skin cancer twice, given birth to my fourth baby, and moved twice. I also tend to dig in and just get stricter and stricter with myself rather than give grace. Thank you so much for sharing these practical tips. I will definitely try to incorporate them into my day to day life more. Praying for your peace and rest. Isaiah 26:3 is also one of my fav verses. 💕💕💕

I have felt very stressed over the past few years just trying to keep up with life and homemaking and homeschooling and home church we have in our home. I ❤ love everything about this video, Joy, especially, that you're back on CZcams! We just returned from a week's beach vacation. I went off my phone completely, a full week before, and didn't take it on vacation with me. I just stared out at the ocean and flowers and palm trees and people. I took mental pictures, instead. One moment brought tears (thank God for sunglasses). A new mom went surfing, leaving her husband and newborn on shore. The baby started crying immediately. That hunger cry that we all know. I watched as the father rocked, danced, whispered, and swayed. He gently put the baby on a blanket. Hovering over her body, he softly caressed her cheek, talking softly. He continued with 2 soothers, then, finally a bottle came out. He fed her. The image of him hovering over her and being so gentle just touched me so deeply. This is our Father. ❤🙏

Love this and thank you for sharing 😊. One think that came to my mind when you were talking was how allowing ourselves to change direction or change our minds can be the most gentle thing we can do. We often back our own selves in a corner when there is no need! I am reminded of the song lyric “who the lord sets free is free indeed!” I am so glad to hear you are feeling better ❤️

Thank you for this! We are soul sisters - your methods of being gentle with yourself are exactly what I choose too when I need to be gentle. (Btw, I started watching this earlier but had to save the finish, and I’m lying in my bed about to take a nap! 😆) But your words about being gentle with others really resonated with me. Yesterday, I’m afraid I did not act this way to someone and while it was a breaking point for me after taking a lot, I feel bad for how I acted and that I let my frustration toward this person kind of color my whole day. (I did apologize, for what it’s worth.) Thanks for what you say and do, and I’m looking forward to seeing more videos again! Praying for you all!

Thank you for sharing this. I love hot baths with Epsom salts, a good book, and a warm cup of tea. I love Dr. Teal's Pink Himalayan salt bubble bath too...such a refreshing scent. I often fail to give myself grace and expect way too much of myself so it was inspiring to hear how you're being gentle with yourself during this tough season. I have really struggled to feel rested since Daylight Savings Time and I think I need to go to bed earlier than normal for a while so my body can re-adjust. I recharge the most with silence, so having time where it's quiet to pray and reflect is very important for good mental health for me. I've also found that using CBD oil (the Trim Healthy Mama brand) has been very calming for anxiety and winter blues.

Thank you Joy for opening up your heart and sharing the journey you have walked these past months. You are a testimony to our Great God and how He works through suffering and trials. I rejoice with you that you have sweet enough friends (plus husband and therapist) to point you in the direction of grace instead of law and legalism. We can easily lay so many burdens on ourselves that we were never intended to carry or to wrongfully think that we are loved more by the more we sacrifice. So thankful to see the Lord remind you that He is a gentle, loving Shepherd and there is nothing that we can do that increases the immeasurable love He already has for us. May you enjoy your baths, naps and more than one dress :), knowing that being a mom and wife is a high and exhausting calling and He intends for us to enjoy rest and leisure without guilt. May you continue to heal and find "Joy." :)

I am working really hard on doing just this. I am so tough on myself. I make goals that are almost impossible to accomplish and then best myself up when I fail. I am really trying to minimize, decrease stress and be more realistic/gentle with self and it is much harder than I expected after treating myself so poorly for so long. I didn’t even realize I was doing so...

I think its so funny with naps----in our early years we ( as children) fight naps, and in our later years we crave them!! LOL :) I enjoy a good nap as well.
I have had this word gentle floating around and now going to grab hold of it in a way to honor the Lord, I have not been gentle with myself and the way I speak to myself , in a way I think when Im hard on myself its a way of being humble but I am Gods creation and Im redeemed, and the way I speak to my children some days, GENTLE is my new word too!!

hurrah for being gentle on ourselves.
I literally cannot function in the best way without my midday siestas.
Some people have tried to convince me that it's not needed...and some people can do well all day without taking a nap-but for me I notice how much better I feel after a good rest in the middle of the day.
This was so nice to watch.

What is it about the term "self care" that just grates me the wrong way? It just feels ... all ... wrong. I can't put my finger on it. So much of what you shared, however, is exactly what I think about when I think of Jesus withdrawing to spend time alone in prayer. Being gentle with yourself. Doing what you need to do in order to be well and healthy.
And naps? Oh my. If there was an Olympic event for taking naps I'd be right up there for first place!!! I don't consider naps a luxury. I consider them a life-giving necessity!
