  • When people ask if salvage cars are worth the bargain or the nightmare that comes along with it, you can feel a bit confused. After all, there's huge differences just between a salvage and a rebuilt car right in the title. So what do those car titles mean, how much can it cost to rebuild a salvage car, and how to channels like Rich Rebuilds, Royalty Rebuilds, JR Garage, and even TJ Hunt make it look so easy?! Well today we talk about when, if, and how you should even go about this process and why the title of "Rebuilt" shouldn't always scare you.

I only bought one rebuilt title truck and it allowed me to upgrade from my S10 to a lifted 2500hd Silverado for like $500. It also matters why it's rebuilt. This truck had a tree fall on it a year after it was built and has been driven 150k miles since then so I know its safe.

As my first college car I bought a 2004 Honda Accord that was a salvage title for $2400 and 163k miles. When I bought the car initially I didn’t ask nor did I know that it had a salvage title. I put 10k miles on it after one semester with just routine oil changes and sold it for $3500. So it really does just depend on who wants it or who’s willing to buy something like that. Sometimes you can just get lucky and sell it for more than it should be worth.

    • @AlexMartini.
      @AlexMartini.  Před rokem +2

Agreed! Also depending on how bad the damage was for the salvage title to be issued, some people don't care about the title especially if they don't plan on selling it :)

  • @Mirage8v

We don't have something like a Salvage title in europe, so it's a lot trickier to buy a decent car. Then again, if you know what your doing, it's fine.

@@AlexMartini. That depends per country really. In The Netherlands, where I live, if you crash a vehicle and the police deem it totalled (roof caved in, frame bent etc.) they take the title and you can keep the car, after you fix it, the car gets the OK by the road authorities after a thorough inspection and you get the title back. From between the crash till you get the title back, the vehicle is marked at our 'DMV' and online for eveyone to see. After that: minor collisions, or shady practices (turning 2 half cars in 1 decent one) are never reported officially and thus a history like you have in the US, does not readily exist.

Not supercars, but my Dad has now bought and fixed up 3 salvage cars from auctions, all of which are still on the road today. Nothing exciting, but he finds it fun to fix them up and then he gets a great deal on his daily drivers (he has the time to do it being the key since the money you save would be the labor cost). Definitely something you need the time for and need to enjoy doing to make it worth it IMO, but if you have the time and want to save the money it can be really great!

The I got to putter around the lot for a second lol. The Lambo ran. But it had some code on it and wouldn't go past like 2200 rpm. Both GTRs wouldn't start. One was straight totaled. And the McLaren only had a few body dents. But it wouldn't start either.. But most cars I picked up were Hondas, Kias Taurus... And many of the like... YAWWNNN

I got my 350z salvage title, right after I was done paying off my 335i. At first I couldn’t install the injen intakes. Then I got DC intakes instead. Before that I realized I couldn’t install o2 sensors(new ones from Z1 because they give you lifetime warranty) turns out three out of the four where stripped. I was able to fix it yesterday after realizing headers and exhaust wasn’t an option. I got to finally drive my car after 8 months. Turns out there will be problems but I’m glad I bought this Z33 for $5600.
I do recommend some one to buy a car that is rebuilt or salvage just because the engine has been cherry and the Z can really be reliable and handle.

Not every rebuild involved mechanical or structural issues. By way of example, a car can be totaled if the interior is stripped and the value exceeds an amount relative to the value of the car. Don't fear the salvage title, fear the owner not disclosing why (and a tree crushing it before rebuild, because that's no good).

I see a lot of "too good to be true" deals on "rebuilt" title cars on for sale sites. Noting too crazy mind you, but enough to be tempting. I don't even know if having a mechanic's inspection can fully help you in those cases. Of course it depends what you want it for, but generally I go for clean and more importantly owners that care about what they have and know a lot about it.
The owners that know their cars and actually LIKE THEM have produced some of the best 3rd party buys in my experience.

A spin-off video about cars that are on the knifes edge of being salvage could also be made. Replace the same title with "scrap cars" or "failed project cars".
My current passion project was a borderline salvage. A 2006 E-150 Econoline.
Interior mold, mud and food stained.
    Seats and seat belts moldy.
    Severe maintenance neglect.
    Door locks seized.
    Drivers headlight bracket broken.
    Body rust
    Ruined windshield.
    Garbage tires and seized brakes.
    Flat rear leaf springs.
Dented gas tank triggering an engine light (Evap canister solenoid).
    ABS light on.
Rear body interior bent from overloading (not frame)
    Dead battery.
Nobody wanted to buy, so seller dropped it to $4,000.
After a year of fixing above issues, I drove it across western Canada with wife, kids and pet last summer and back with zero issues.
Still have more to do, but moment of pride is when a Purolator contractor was on the my street and asked if I would take $7,500 for my van.
Your on the right track Alex, it's doable with a driveway, tools and money.
Good thing is that salvage ir near scrap cars are great learning opportunities as the fiscal risk is low. The vehicle value can only go up if repairs are successful.
Sure as shit, some local garage or related dealership is going to call you in to work on the same vehicle as your project car.

If your looking a super cars I'd be extremely cautious. But with that said if your just looking to get a mass produced or entry level sports car like a brz/frs, focus ST, wrx, maybe a mustang or something I wouldn't be as worried. Typical insurance rule is If the damage is 50% of the cars total value then its a "total loss". Well on those brzs which was maybe valued at 15k, meaning the damage only needs to be 7500$ to total it which which oem parts, shop labor rates is extremely easy to do. Also spend the 100$ or whatever and have the car inspected by a shop. Most people who aren't worried about shotty work are cool with it.
