Building cars in 2022 is a lot like flushing money down the toilet except the toilet is on fire, the house is on fire, everything is on fire. Why? Because the cost of building modified cars is insane right now. So how do you keep building cars without the end result looking like a cheap wish app hot wheel? Growing up poor has made for a very fun time with modifying my cars. Not like it was destitute or anything that bad, but growing up knowing that a want had to wait sometimes for 3-6 months allowed me to get good at scoping out bargains and bartering for stuff. I got a set of Tom's C7Rs for my A70 Supra back in my broke undergrad days because I traded a semester of calculus tutoring and some old textbooks to a freshman. The right deal will come along, you just gotta be patient and maybe do a little work for it as well. Also helps if the other party doesn't know what they have or just aren't up on vintage stuff.

Piece of advice for new builders:
If you're looking at a rare Japanese part or a replica, buy the actual part. Yes it's expensive. Yes it'll take forever to ship (especially now). You will absolutely be living off cup noodles for a while after, but in the long run it saves money. You get what you pay for, and those replicas aren't going to last as long, nor tend to fit as well as the hand made original parts they're trying to mimic. With all the work, time, and money that comes with bodywork to get a lot of replica stuff to look passable, you could have just got the OG piece. Save yourself the headache.
original pieces can go a long way; as long as the part is either new or remanufactured. It’s almost as if when people go towards trying to save money when they build a car they almost spend more than the original parts lol
i only half agree. for aero and body panels if you know what you’re doing with body work it doesn’t really matter what you get. if you’re good with your hands it’s the best money saver imo
I have a DC5 and I really wanted a mugen lip kit. Obviously finding them real is rough and costly, so instead of that and bottom end duraflex that probably won’t fit properly, I did find a solid mid tier that has solid fitment.

He’s absolutely right, word of mouth is a game changer. Friend of mine sold me his car for a grand($1,000) when he heard I needed to buy a car. he wanted to get rid of (this was about 4 years ago). Asked me “how much do u got saved up”....I told him and he was like yeah I’ll sell u my Nissan! (Not knowing what kind of Nissan) He said “it’s got some cosmetic issues but everything mechanically on it was serviced by the dealer, on time, at every landmark mileage point for service” what was it? It was a 240sx / Silvia S14 UNMOLESTED or “non-mod”. It was The sport package trim with the limited slip differential...all it needed was paint work. Car drove great, and the suspension had just been serviced about 5,000 miles before I bought it. I don’t have it anymore (I drive a brz now ) but Alex is right when he says “don’t waste your money”
shop around, go car scouting in your area...if u see a car parked on the same neighborhood streets (not in a driveway) but moved around through out the week to different sides(street sweeping)...and u always see it parked...it’s most likely a car that the owner wants to get rid of. Leave a note with some sort of contact info (discretional) and you’d be surprised what the outcome could be!

Dude I’ve never subscribed to anyone or any channel, you are the first. I’ve enjoyed watching your videos from Fitment, and now you’re on your way to doing things on your own, so congrats! A man who is driven like you are, is to have sure success when making your own path. Either way, I have a 14 Mazda 3 Hatch… it’s not MazdaSpeed3 unfortunately… but I never hear anyone talk about modding cars like that, or just regular consumer vehicles. So why not?

The feeling knowing you paid extra for a car always sucks especially with the chip shortage raising car prices to all time highs last year, but sometimes timing sucks. I needed a car bc i was moving out on my own across the country and couldn't use the hand-me-down I got from my parents. trying to find a decent used car under $15k was crazy hard.
Definitely a great video. Cutting corners is a no go and waiting/saving is better.

Something you sort of touched on is going with a lesser known car that does a similar job. Looking for a wrx or evo? Volvo V60 T5 or T6. Want a Miata? Saturn sky or solstice. Bonus points if it shares lots of parts with common cars like the solstice and sky, they share the transmission with a Chevy pickup and the differential is out of a Cadillac among a host of other shared parts
Bought my clean s13 $5500 plus an sr20det long block for $1500. And it still drives and runs great on its ka. Deals out there just need to look and be fast.

Damn bro... back in 2018 I went to look at an s13 for 3k and engine bay was a complete mess, would've have to put all those parts back just to see if it starts, car was on jackstands with no wheels... and he showed photos that made the car look new and running. After that I never looked at an s13 again lmao

I found my project earlier in the year on a forum. Often times forum members will have a lower price on their specific forum, and a higher price on other platforms. I'm also watching some auctions to see how cheap I can pick up some other stuff. There is also a window of popularity for cars and when they are hot, tons of parts available. When the new hotness comes around to displace the old, have fun scrounging, scouring and waiting for used or NOS parts!

I’m 35 and I feel like Jay Leno(who is 72) when I tell people younger than me that I got my S13 barely running for $500 10 years ago. I’ve seen cars in similar condition selling for a couple thousand today. It’s so sad.

As somebody who got into cars because of drifting my 1st build was a Fox body Mustang convertible drift car that I spent way too much money on. One of the things that has saved me money since then is having a plan for the build that is so soooo important. I have an E46 BMW now and one of the 1st things I did was make an outline for what I wanted to do with it. This has kept the build relatively simple and prevented my chaotic side from taking over with big unnecessary purchases.

@@AlexMartini. It's good, just got it running again this past weekend. Might take it to Drift Evergreen in PA this upcoming weekend if I can get it ready to pass tech, and then maybe to Clubloose at Englishtown in the future.
That and join Facebook groups for that car or item. I'm part of a bunch of 8th and 9th gen si groups for knowledge but you'll also see used parts and part outs flying around. Easiest way to find used items for your build if you don't know enough people. Been on the fence about bagging and supercharging the si but I think I'll just save the money for one of the new sports cars or if there's a good deal on them.

I drive a little Ikea-like crapbox nugget. There is some aftermarket, which is dying tbh for this car, but even just mounting parts from the sportier trims already make a nice difference. Great way for me to start and see what happens to cars, ICE's, and where to move next, without risking a lot of money

Totally feel ya with the "dying aftermarket". My last DD was a 89 accord - no real aftermarket in the mid 2010's. My current has all the aftermarket (Mk 7 Golf: and me with no money 😂).
My first was a 91 civic. Still *some* aftermarket, but it's been either declining or ascending to unaffordable, take your pick. I'll rebuild it one day...

You are correct about 2022 Alex. I feel lucky lucky that I was able to pay MSRP for my 2022 Mazda CX-5 turbo. Also I am glad that I bought my S13 vert for 4K & my RHD S14 for 15k two years ago because these prices have gone thru the moon. I am doing what you are saying about the parts. I purchased a s13 Silvia Spirit Rei wide body kit, M sport carbon hood, & 18” black work meister wheels SP1’s but still need/want air suspension even though my s13 already has stance coils on it. Bought a 2016 Mustang Ecoboost Premium from a dealership with 63,000 miles cash for 29K 10 months ago. I knew I was over-paying, but it was the cleanest one in my price range for miles, came with some aftermarket cosmetics that I was gonna buy anyway, and I REALLY needed a car. Newer mustangs w/ less than 20,000 miles are now going for the same price or cheaper smh...
Word of mouth is how I found my 66 Galaxie that runs, drives, and is rust free for $2500 a couple of months ago. I saw it in a neighbors driveway, knocked on his door, and asked if it was for sale.

I've saved money buying used vehicles that were gross inside but fine structurally. The "ick" factor scares a lot of buyers away.

being patient is quite possible the best possible advise, same for middle ground and not going top end if you are rushing to do something
specifically the trying something new is great advice, mr2(mrs) instead of a miata, celica for a civic, honestly if you are thinking of a swap or anything like that may as well search for something close to a rolling shell at that point lol

@@AlexMartini. not quite sure of the prices in the states, but locally an mr-2 is going cheaper than a sx chassis, the mrs is roughly half the price of a first or second gen miata, instead of buying a civic you can go integra for half price, or celica for the inbetween. In general there´s quite a few alternatives for the same markets for waaaay less if you are not just rolling with the hype
So yeah, great advice! (Also buying use if you know what you are doing can get you amazing deals just as you stated)
The crazy thing is even cars like the Celica and MR2 are getting expensive. I remember when I get my first second gen MR2, I paid 2.5k for a NA. Rolling shells are now selling for 2-3k where I live. Clean running NA’s sell for 6-8k. It’s rough being a poor car guy😅
I was lucky in February 2020 I got a 06 infinity g35 coupe(350z frame motor transmission)at a auction 3k but needed some work. 4k repairs/upgrades breaks, tires, coils, plugs, water pump, battery and a hand full of sensors. I had saved 10k so stayed under my budget. It's been great hasn't had any problems in 20 months I put another 13k miles

Definitely mad facts 14k for a miata is absurd and I think Bladed Angel touched on that too this whole car hype is tearing up used car markets. Like why buy a supra/ supercar beater for 100k like you might as well buy a supercar.
Very true man. There comes a point where you gotta shed the noise and popularity and just look at the sheer performance of a car if that’s what you care about.
Ha, I own a set of VSKFs but bought mine in like 2016 when they were still cheap. Now they are like $3K+. Plus, I would rather have good sticky tires on some OEM+ wheels than have crappy tires on some $3K wheels. I like to take time and wait for a good used part to show up on a forum or FB Marketplace. Saved $250 for Hondata Flashpro from a person who only used it to dyno tune his car a few times and didn't need it anymore since he ended up selling the car after. But some times you just want to buy brand new just because most of the people don't know the history of a part. Love that you touched on this topic. too many people jump on trendy and then go into debt with car parts and 1/2 the time, it sits in a garage for 3+ months before it even gets installed b/c they spend all the $ buying the damn thing =P Keep it up Alex! Good advice on looking for oddball cars that most people don’t think of. KEI cars are still relatively afford JDM cars. Another thing to do is look for undesirable models. As an example, I wanted a Skyline, so my brother and I could cruise in Skylines together. I couldn’t afford a 20k Skyline, but after looking around, I was able to score a r33 Skyline for 7.5k. Why so cheap? We’ll it’s a four door automatic, so it’s not a desirable model. It’s still a cool unique car that has support, so I can modify it to my liking.

Don't know how Copart works in other states but in Michigan you can pay $59 for a membership. That lets you bid up to $1200 without putting a bidding deposit down. Then you just search for cars under no licence required, meaning you don't need a dealer or broker licence to bid on them. Some need a little more work than others but sometimes there's some diamonds in the rough on there. 👍👊
There's always a few heaters! I remember learning that bio could also mean that it just got hit by an animal and wasn't cleaned. You can snag some pretty affordable trucks through that method haha
Snagged an '02 330xi with 109k miles that was fairly clean that runs and drives, but needed a new passenger fender and a strut for $1600 through copart. Though fees and taxes is what eats you alive.
Here in New Zealand the prices for the GT86 is slowly rising (back when I was in high school, they were no more than $23K NZD. 6 years later they're at least $30K NZD) since everyone, even old people, are buying them up like hot cakes, so I went around few dealers I trusted and ask if they can find some for $23K max with decent specs like average mileage, well maintained, colour blue, stock, 2012 to 2013, etc, while continuing to work and save up so I dont have to get a loan to buy one. Hopefully to get one before I turn 25

I've put about 4k into my Civic (mostly suspension and some used cosmetics that I refurbed/resprayed, some EP3 rims with PS4 grippy grip stuff, new HU, tints). I'll be getting a Mazda 3 MPS (MazdaSpeed3 over there) next and doing subtle but tasteful mods to that too (handling mostly and a stage 1 with HPFP).
I actually don't know what I'd love to mod the most... Evo IV maybe? Escort Cossie? RS200? ARGH!

You can get some good Facebook market place deals if you're REALLY quick but the best way to go is word of mouth, I got a running and driving JDM Soarer for $1000 and a JDM 300ZX (turbo manual) for $3000 just from word of mouth

About a year ago, I was looking to buya new miata since mine was rusty and had a blown motor, but the prices were so high that I looked at other options. I ended up finding a track prepped 1970 MGB GT and paid less than miatas were going for.

i was looking at miatas last year, you could get a decent one around $3k. i decided to go with a slightly more practical 4g eclipse spyder. now im looking for projects again. you can get a decent ford ranger for $3k

I'm really needing this right now, I've been stalking the car market the past ~4 years and I've just been waiting to be able to afford something worth it. I know first hand that some of these cars are going for 2x-3x what they should be, but now that I've save up enough money it's tempting to just say fuck it and buy someones overpriced shitbox because it doesn't seem like it's going to get any better. I currently daily a hybrid so I can save up money, but I really want to start building and driving my own car enthusiast grade car soon as opposed to sitting on the sidelines in my commuter car just looking at all these cool builds from afar. I'll try to start asking around for specific cars I suppose since I've only just been searching online as I assumed that was the best and safest way to go about it.
Just take your time. With the interest rate spike coming, it’ll cool the market a bit and help people understand they can’t loan $20K for a NB Miata with 160K miles ya know? Unless the cash can be burned, don’t burn it, simple as that!

@@AlexMartini. Yeah I subscribed and I'll be here for the journey. I've been seeing a particular import I want popping up for a decent price I just need to wait. It seems like finding a cheap car and then getting it shipped is the way to go for me since everything I see near me is being price gouged. I'm just hesitant because it can be hard to tell the condition of a car if it's not obvious online (at least for someone who has yet to work on a car like me). With that being said if the price is right it's worth just saying fuck it and throwing a new engine or tranny in if need be.

Something often overlooked is pricing for 80's and 90's replacement parts to help w the maintenance of the car you just bought. Warehouse closeouts and NOS from places like Rock Auto, let you restore your baby for pennies on the dollar. Restore first, then pimp out!

personally, I like to buy shitboxes and make them nice. Just dropped and engine in my STI, rebuilt the front suspension, did a ball bearing turbo, and fueling to support it. Hits the 3 B's (brembos, bbs', big turbo) for about 10k

My daily is an FC Rx7 and the only mod i did too it was replaced the radiator with a koyorad since that's a must for every Rx7.

That got me an Ka24e 240sx, bodykit, wheels, suspension, interior parts, and the SR20DET swap.
Some safety features I didn't cheap out on. Don't want to skip out on that lol.
Took 2 years of searching to get where I'm at right now.
First problem is not enough guys ask themselves what they want to do with their car and what their own expectations are before deciding on a platform and the mods to go with. Then they either are disappointed by it under performing in certain areas or the problem of it just being uncommfortable and a pain to live with. Some guys go so die hard, they forget to enjoy themselves. Don't be that guy.

Hate to admit it but I’ve used plastidip on my wheels because rims are through the roof. From silver to black, its all about prep work and execution to making plastidip look worth it

project cars are weird i was interested in getting a project for a business i want to start (ie. myself) spent 2 months chasing tail to get the owner of a 4dr skyline to do an engine in i got fed up and now im waiting on my new chassis to get home a 1999 mitsubishi chariot awd doing a rwd k24 turbo with nascar parts and drysump and coilovers (shame to say ebay knockers to put around because the stockers are dead and extremely hard to find new) i want to do it in stages but depending on how much hassle parts are to make work in such a weird chassis i might just go crazy and do it all at once

I remember in 2019 when my 2010 Corolla XRS got totaled, I was shopping around on local sites that sells cars in Ontario Canada. There was at least 15 different 350z for 5 to 8 grand, this was like 3 years ago. I couldn't believe it in just 3 years owners would quickly begin selling those same cars for $15,000 today they are now selling them for $20,000 the price of a Brand new car. If you ask me, if I would buy a 19 year old car for $20,000 the price I could buy a Brand new car for. I would say to you, that's a definite No. Even my Camry is now worth $8,000 I just looked at previous ads of the same exact Camrys, people are selling them for over $7,000 mine is the Classic edition with the 5 Speed Manual Transmission. Black Leather seats, Power Sunroof, power windows, power mirrors, heavily Tinted all around and modified. A Fully loaded model.
