This whacky pricing in the market actually had me change course a bit when I bought a car a few weeks back. For years, and I mean YEARS, I had planned on importing over a kouki S14 Silvia K from Japan myself utilizing auctions oversees with the help of an exporter, but the price of S14s became absolutely absurd in relation to their condition. The whole process just a few years ago of getting one in my driveway was around $10k …or even less! And that was for good condition specimens!
Now? $15k+ and that’s for super questionable examples that WILL require a lot of work still. Buy a decent one that’s already here and you’re looking at around $28k! WTF!?!? The S14 Silvia K is my absolute dream car but not at that price. That’s just insane. I mulled this over for a long time…watched the market while saving up money and it lead me to change course after realizing that reality just wasn’t there for me at this time and I needed to replace one of my cars.
Instead of the Silvia, I ended up getting a 2012 370Z (touring, sport package, manual) for a little under $25k…financed with a $10k down payment (my Silvia money lol). Gets me a cool rwd sports car that I also like a lot while also helping boost my credit with a substantial loan (I’m 28 for context). Right now it seems like a smart compromise. And hell, I still get an awesome car for my jdm fanboi heart!
I’m happy with what I got. The Z is an absolute riot! It’s my first manual sports car and I plan to modify it a bit. Still want to have my fun within a reasonable budget lol…it’s already on coilovers, some other suspension work, and has nice exhaust system from Motordyne (decatted test pipes too!) This’ll be the car that I learn to drift in while still keeping it a street car.
..I’m still hoping for that S14 Silvia K to be mine one day though…hoping for the pricing to come back down to reality…one day…one of these days…please? 🥺🤞

I did something similar with a g37x awd so I don’t die in the winter, and it has the vq. Idk if I want to turbo it or just build a civic for the price of a turbo kit lmfao.
I totally agree with you and I hope it's time for guys like us to build our cars and not have to go in debt. Companies have been getting fat long enough.

I've been an enthusiast since about 2019, and I only recent got into really good paying work to be able to start affording the stuff I want like an s13. My first fun car that I got into was a pretty lucky grab that a friend found for me, a 4th gen prelude for 900 bucks. Ended up being a much smarter course and a better way in for me than a 6k miata.

Personally in 2020, I was looking to buy a Boss 302 but when I applied for my car loan my credit union offered me more then I asked for. So I got the more expensive Boss 302 Laguna Secca.

Important note from a macroeconomics major: things will get worse before they get better. Changing interest rates is consumer side economic theory. Basically: its meant to impact consumers and their buying habits in an effort to improve the market. It occasionally works, but it doesnt just impact consumers. Suppliers (corporations) also get effected. Their interest rates will be the same as ours, so they wont be taking out as many loans from banks. This may cause prices to go up as a result.
Another thing to note is that the second hand market isn’t necessarily related to the new car market. While this action made by the Fed may help the new car market, the used car market may not see any effects in the near future, if at all.
Thanks for the comment and additional feedback. Where I think this will impact the used market is through the indirect pullback due to the other categories that impact the consumers. More particularly, HELOC's, Credit Cards, etc. With that spending getting pulled back, I think you'll see a few people think twice about throwing an Integra on a HELOC and instead waiting 3 months for just the cash.

I bought my R34 GTR in cash at the start of COVID when no one else was buying cars. It's legal in 2025 and has already appreciated 6x in value. Now, I'm not bragging as you'd think. I hope the prices actually come down so it's a far easier decision to keep the car when it gets to the US. For someone who actually WANTS to keep the car forever, it's all the more reason to pick it over a new house.

How do you think (mostly environmental) regulatory changes will affect all this? I know I put way more into my WRX right after buying it than I would have liked, just cause it looked like I wouldn't be able to in the coming years. There's so much pressure to get "the last" whatever you're into before you can't anymore, whether it's warranted or not.
Environmental regulations will make most cars less valuable. The cars that qualify as collector pieces will be the ones that continue to rise, as collectors will still salivate for ICE classics. Not sure a WRX will make that cut. Enjoy the car for what it is.
@@Und34d_R I don't ever expect my car to be a collectors' car. They just made way too many of them for that. But I do know that if I tried to do the same mods I currently have from scratch today, there's no easy path to do it. There's always going to be some level of "gotta get tuned now" FOMO, and it's only getting worse. And while that won't drive car prices up or could drive them down, it definitely increases demand for parts and tunes.
V8 Pony, Muscle and Sports cars will go up in value because the Future V8 cars will be Boosted Hydrogen engines or they will be hybrids. The NA V8 days are numbered

Fleet manager here, run a big fleet and as a business we put a hold on purchasing cars unless it is absolutely nessessary.
The industry is absolutely taking the piss with pricing the main one being dealer delivery. BMW, mer and Audi all changed their dealer delivery charge from 2.5k to 10k. When there is no stock to deliver. The stock that is here....is here not much dealer delivery to do. Get it washed and regoed that's it.
I understand why cars went mental in pricing but using it as an excuse to change your business model then saying the pricing will not go back to normal as they are adopting the higher pricing into the future no matter the state of the market is blatant profit gouging.
This is how you loose long time customers. Taking the piss at their expense. My father recently bought a 2020 m5 competition brand new has not been sold. Must have been costing them a fortune to keep it on their lot and they argued with me until the end of the earth for the stupid charges that tried to add on. I buy 30 cars a year and have to be up on the trends always and I just advised my bosses to not approve any vehicle purchases until this all dies down. Over extending on depreciation assets is a rule I stick by both in my business and in my personal life. Debt is bad people....good for the banks bad for inflation rates.
Australia is heading for a huge housing crisis much like the US back in 2008, it's Gunna happen and people are saying all the same shit they did with the GFC...oh it'll never happen here.
Our debt ratio is through the roof, house prices are super inflated and people are borrowing well above their means once the interest rates rise above say 7% I predict a big problem for Australia.
I have literally just sat back and watched all this happen. My brother was lucky and got in before the house prices went crazy but even he is a little worried about the rises.
It's scary how everyone here is just acting like this crazy inflation will never end. It will and usually in dramatic fashion. So be smart people. I wanna buy my next project cars but I'm just waiting it out until all the people who over extended need to sell. And it will happen.

Great video. Awesome insight and opinion. I as an older drifter (40)…. I can’t reconcile spending $20G+ for a car that is over 200kMi, and older than my kids…. A Miata…. Used to go for a couple grand 2-5ish…. Now a beat up POS automatic with 298k avg for about 10-20k. Absolutely NOT. I don’t know if this strategy will work, but I hope something gives…. Otherwise the younger enthusiasts are going to fizzle out and start to disappear, like the manuals and gas cars altogether. Loved the video. Look forward to your reply.
There's something I call a bit of a "price threshold" which is when somethingis no longer "really expensive" it's just "too expensive." The car community is experiencing that in certain spaces right now. If you want to see it in action, look at the truck community. Just a set of Wheels and Tires average $3800 nowadays where a year ago it was $2900; it's insane.
The same will happen to the scene if there's not some sort of slow down in overall demand. In this specific instance, I think this is good for people .

get a kei car if you want something cheap using it currently as a daily (3cylinder 1liter cheap) but there's bigger version 4cylinder 1.3/1.5 na/turbo (most stock turbo boost at 0.5 of course you can crack up the boost but require stronger internals, point is it's possible and quiet cheap if you not living in asia) fun part is this lil kei cars weight at below 1ton power to weight ratio is great
Do you have a Kei car? I've thought about it but never owned one because they just don't fit the bill for me from a modification perspective. It's personal preference is all; there are some AWESOME kei cars out there.

I feel like the Car market will go down but Classics like S13's, NA's, FC's and other 90's icons will hold. I feel like their demand has gone up tremendously and sadly most have been cut up or destroyed by a wall.

Good Day.... Totally agree with this vid.... the market became too much to the point that imports that was 25 years old became ridiculous ... I got my r32 for 13k at the beginning before the hype and even that was a lot , My cousin waited a year later... and he payed 25k and the one he got was not in good condition... the parts went thru roof... it made me look at the trend and get disappointed because it cost way to much to customize so I could only hold out and keep it clean until the market corrected itself...

One of many Dream Cars that I will never part , car came with quality parts so I am basically doing over interior fresh and trying to get some stock pieces and another set of wheels and I should be good… I also own 02 WRX 20k original miles , and a 1994 Honda Prelude that I will be doing a Kswap eventually
I think in Europe it's very different. Big loans for things like cars require years and years with a bank earning steady income for the bank to consider you able to take a loan and pay it off. I, like many Europeans, was taught to spend more time earning and planning your spending so you can outright buy what you want. For me, this meant moving from my country last month to come to a much better paying country to save for my car. I dream of importing an ER34 Sedan, 2.0 NA automatic (my dream car and specs, believe it or not) with less than 50k miles. Because I learned about planning and thoughtful investment, I managed to put aside 1700 euro this month (roughly 1900 dollars) to start on that dream. Ten months of saving will see a car like that delivered to me and road legal. I think the main problem isn't the prices, but how people approach buying. Planning on getting the car on some 18x8.5 +33 Anovia Titans in the new dove white - wheels and suspension ideas, anyone? Function and daily-driver friendly, it's my first car

As you were talking about businesses going crazy and buying everything back in 2020 but now in 2022 they gotta slow down, I thought of EE. I work down at SD Wheel in Wrightstown and started in November. Im really seeing the affects of the market chilling out. When I started it was all about grow grow grow and now it just seems like we are working on what we have work well. That might just be the company finally hitting a high saturation point in the market, or what you are talking about in this video. I'm all down for higher interest rates only if dealers cool it with those ridiculous markups. Hopefully higher interest rates will allow the dealers to sell cars closer to MSRP so those of us that can save up the cash can actually buy a car close to MSRP!
Markets ebb and flow always; but what's important is to understand where it's at and adjust accordingly to keep your head above water. This goes for biz and personal!
The question is if the prices will go down to 2018/19 prices (with some inflation built in) or if there only going to go down somewhat
I think they'll go down to probably Q2 2022 prices. Still higher, but not as bad as 2022.
As much as I hope it helps car prices I close on my first house tomorrow.. this market is crazy but hopefully things get better with out just crashing and burning

I had a 2012 Evo X that in June of 2021 a deer jumped in front of and totaled. It was a car I never wanted to sell. The insurance took advantage and didn’t give me enough to even get close to that to replace. Ever since all that’s happened is cars kept climbing, I’ve been stuck driving my old beater truck the last year. At this rate I have no idea when I can get anything even remotely similar while working a full time job, it’s pretty sad. I can only hope things get better, but I can’t hold my breath. I’m sure I’m not the only one unfortunately too🤷🏼😬

I bought a stock clean mk4 gti vr6 at 105k miles for $5,700 yesterday. I was talking to GTI guys and they were like… that’s a $4,000 car max yet no matter where I looked the only thing under $5,000 were 200k miles and falling apart. Crazy times.

Some cars went up being hard to find some followed along the trend that trend will die when people cant afford loans and the cars will sell for what people will pay in cash... No matter who you think you are this is gonna happen so save up and or buy the repo bank loan 240 for 4k that was 20k before. its gonna happen!

Despite our current interest rates and inflation situation, gas cars are eventually going away. Combine this with the fact that cool 80's 90's cars will be harder and harder to find in decent shape (or at all.) I expect once all new vehicles go electric that you'll see prices creep up steeply once again. The best time to buy (despite crazy 3rd party markups) is still right now.

One day, once I can put all my energy into it. I have to have a game plan for this 67 Camaro. I don’t mind it having a four speed muncie transmission with a 305 or even a 327. I would drive that thing the way Dom drove his little nephews car in one of the fast and the furious movies before it blew up with a huge nitrous shot. I remember when one of the highest priced Skyline GTRs I saw was a Silver R34 Motorex car on craigslist in chicago, it was listed for $100,000. This was back in 2011. Just as it appeared it was gone, now the highest priced Skyline I see is a 1 million dollar V-Spec 2 R34. I am slowly losing my mind watching these silly prices.
I totally get it man. I remember Brian at TopRank got me a R33 for under $50K; 40k miles; and pretty well off. I didn’t buy it for the sake of another business thing I was trying and now that car would be about 90-100K all day. RIP

In 2020, I got a (2016)mk7 gti with with around 60k miles. It was valued around 14k. Now, I just got another mk7 (2017) with much higher miles - 140,000. This gti is worth WAY more than the other one was at the time. If I still had my original one I could have make 10k off it right now easily. Also worth noting that a lot of mk7 gtis in particular right now are selling for more USED than they costed brand new.
Isn't that nuts right now? I know people that have flipped cars for $60-$80K MORE than what they bought it for.

Hopefully the housing market stabilizes for you a bit. I ended up snagging mine a few years back at 3.25% and i'm hearing some 30's are at 6%+. This will cause values to go down but hopefully not too much.

Every generation has a preference of cars, so when people are now in there 30/40s with some proper money would buy the cars they liked as a teenager - hence the current boom with cars from the 90s. Hence why rarely some cars from the 20s/30s/40s/50s/60s/70s continue to rise in price from 2010 onwards, because that generation is now old and limited in demand.
Makes sense to me. I wonder what our next generation is going to want to buy…What do you think?
man i was planning on buying a car for past 5 years, got my license last year, moved to another country 7 months ago and honestly prices got so stupid, like how 400k km 330i/d e46 can be worth 4-6k€? it's just stupid. why vw mk4 that are barely standing on their knees go for 3-5k€z. i love cars, i want to spend my life enjoying them, but with those prices i can't see how is it possible nowadays to live a normal life and be able to afford a somewhat interesting car and to modify it.

@@AlexMartini. definitely, i think american car enthusiasts will be interested in something like 535d or something else that wasn't on the market in the US, cuz somewhat luxurious sedan/wagon with a 3.0 diesel that cost you 4-6k€ and with stage 2 tune goes low 4 seconds 0-60 with awesome mpg might be interesting , and us who are from Europe will have some content about cars that we can buy

I’m 16 with a Prelude that needs selling once I fix it I’m hoping this will allow me to be somewhat in the price range of buying a S14 or if I’m lucky 4door GT-ST
I don't know how you scored a prelude at that age, but if it's in decent shape and mechanically sound, you should by all means keep it.
Plus if you actually want a cool Japanese car, you should have a second car to both let the cool car be worked on and to save the miles on it. I only started doing this last year and it's been a godsend so many times. Plus you can practice and get experience working on the prelude as well before doing the more complex cool car.
@@rushnerd no definitely it’s a good car but I have a 2008 Corolla for a daily and I’ve already pulled the motor on the Prelude and I’ve owned a Miata because I’ve been flipping I just don’t care for the Lude as much cause it’s only gonna go down in value and I don’t want the H22a or the front wheel drive also the Prelude is a unicorn motors are 4K and engine rebuilds suck so I’m just gonna hop into a dream car

Went for an 88' Supra last year too, they are pretty amazing cars and only going up in value. Best of luck man.

I don't think the great unique cars will get much cheaper (i.e S2000s, 1st gen NSXs, Skyline GTRs, 1st gen Viper GTSs, and up). But I agree that new cars and lower level cars will go down or not have a huge mark-up.

@@AlexMartini. yeah I think the Z, manual Supra, and GR Corolla will release just in time before demand gets slower than very slow supply. But Toyota was offering the Supra with 0% APR financing in the middle of 2020 so there is hope.

I’ve been looking at jdm cars for he past two years and I’ve seen the prices inflate so much even on “cheaper” models like mr2s and miatas that were once obtainable are now not even close to worth the money for the quality and performance of the vehicle

Unfortunately nice hardtops are not easy to find. Miata prices in general were too cheap in my mind for the value that you get.

I live in a depressed low COL area and it keeps getting worse. Rather than people from out of state moving in and boosting the local economy, they are just buying up properties, slapping some paint on the walls and renting them for 500 over what the market was to supplement their income.
When it comes to Japanese cars a pretty big chunk of 80s cars are still inexpensive and American cars are inexpensive that were made in the 90s, like the Ford Thunderbird which is a good alternate to the foxbody. But the main problem when pulling from those fields in terms of builds is a good portion of it is uncharted waters so there is no kits. I can vouch for this having an 85 Nissan with 20 tabs open on bolt patterns measurements and so forth

The day cars become a bit affordable again I’m gonna be so happy now I don’t have to be a sad 14 year old looking at cars becoming progressively more expensive and I can’t get one but I’ll probably not be able to get a 930 turbo though because a car going from $100,000 going back down to around $30,000 ain’t gonna happen maybe it could go down to be $50,000 hopefully
