    Nowadays, everyone talks about car shows being pointless or a waste of time. The days of going to a show with quality JDM cars, race cars, or even resto mods seem to be a thing of the past and replaced with street takeovers, intersections getting shut down, or just plain hate on the internet; but is that actually true? I decided to travel to Tennessee to check out Riverside 9, an automotive weekend experience that sets the bar of what a "car meet" is truly supposed to be to try and answer this very question but I want to know after watching this, what do YOU think?

    A $5000 well thought out creative build on an odd car is more impressive than a $300,000 car on bags and wheels calling it a build. I drive to a cars and coffee in one of the wealthier zip codes in the country, the Ferraris get old, well done budget build are where it’s at.

      Real, I spent 4 years in west palm beach and I can confirm I see many more artistic and creative minds up here in Atlanta at Caffeine and Octane vs the Cars and Coffee at the outlets in west palm. I means it’s cool seeing a Senna or an Apollo, but those cars had millions of dollars backing them for designing and teams to build it. Vs something like a foxbody per se where the owner has modified it enough to run with Porches around a track.

    I am part of the car community in Scottsdale, I do car photography as a hobby and here are a few things I've noticed:
    1. The people with the "best" cars (often times the most expensive cars) are snobs and don't actually drive their cars. (I saw an SVJ on a flatbed literally drive through a car meet and not even park... it's all snobbery and attention seeking)
    2. 99.9% of "stanced" cars look like ass in person.
    3. Uncreative builds. Every car looks the same and every stanced BRZ/FRS/GT86/WRX/350z/370z is CLAPPED.
    4. Owners. The coolest owners are usually the people with cars $50k-$115k, they actually drive their cars and they aren't worried about depreciation and mileage like losers.
    5. Tiktok kids. I do photography as a hobby, but these carspotters (ESPECIALLY in Scottsdale) are ruining the car scene. There are a million 11-year-olds with rich parents running around the meets getting in people's way just to boost their internet clout. Taking an awful, underexposed iPhone video holding your phone upside down just to trend hop and try to be controversial to gain followers is ruining meets, everyone is filming the same 3 cars at all the same angles (F40, SVJ, GT3RS and panning 3/4 shots of the headlights and taillights...). There is no creativity in carspotters, many of them DONT EVEN LIKE CARS, they know nothing ABOUT cars, they just want to take videos for clout.
    6. Functional builds. Race cars and canyon cars are the coolest builds because they can actually be enjoyed. Everyone is trying to make their car look good for Instagram reels and not building a car they actually want to drive.
    7. Average cars with some "mods" throwing on windshield banners/stickers. Congratulations, you put in RGB headlights and a carbon hood that doesn't fit on your stock nissan altima and you didn't paint match it because you actually aren't cool! How about take that big sticker off your windshield, take the Tsurikawa off your FWD car and sell your altima!!
    Rant over.

      The SVJ part really blew my mind. In Italy, if you go to a Lamborghini car meet or any car meet in general, if you pull up with your car on a flatbed truck, people would shit on you savagely. Someone might even assume your car broke down or something.
      The reason I might understand such move just a little bit is mileage: the more miles/km are run on your car, the more the price tag goes south. However with an SVJ, it’s still mad dumb. This is a special edition produced in limited numbers, not even the base Aventador, so the price tag would still be in the 700k-800k range.
      That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of in my life.

In 2016 2017 2018 I could post my car online and get likes and be able to have conversations with other car enthusiasts. Now if I post my car online it’s “400hp is slow, you’re slow” “I can beat you with ___” “corvettes are regular traffic”. Where did the hate and random shit talking come from? My car is stock beside exhaust lol I don’t claim to race it or claim it’s something that it’s not. It’s all over the place now and honestly I’m over the car scene / car culture now. Because chasing clout nowadays is "easier" than it was from 2010-2015 era, it gives the chance for the wrong type of people to influence more people to have bad habits, especially those people that keep posting takeovers, highway weaving (no-hesi), etc.

  • @Havok1199
    @Havok1199 Před 19 dny +1

    I know this might go off topic, but here's how I found out about the "street takeover" thing.
    I play a lot of videogames as an hobby, this includes car games, recently my most played car game is Forza Horizon 5. In FH5, besides getting a car among countless models ranging from a Honda Civic EK9 to a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ and tuning them, you can also play online and meet real people in this virtual world, this includes organizing car meets, just like in real life.
    Now what's the point?
    You can make posts about hosting rallies specifying if you can bring any car or only a car from a specific maker, and in the last 4 years I've come across posts about hosting rallies which included the expression "street takeover" in the description, which often is followed by the term "MOPAR" (if you're not familiar, it stands for Dodge cars with the Hellcat trim, which would be Challengers and Chargers). I even joined said meets, but I found out that all those people did was blocking an intersection just to launch their cars there and do burnouts and stuff endlessly. It felt fun initially, but when I realized that it was all about burnouts and sideshows, I didn't just get bored easily, I even felt awkward because you wouldn't know what can happen if you slid into someone else's car (yes they get even up to 4-5 cars doing stuff).
    Another thing that blew my mind was that all of those people doing street takeovers happened to be American, I found out by listening to their accent when we had mics on. As an European, exactly an Italian, it's something I've never heard of, let alone the fact of people supporting said stuff. I went to car rallies with people from different parts of the world, particularly a British guy and a couple fellow Italians, and we NEVER had anyone doing this shit, not even having an idea of doing it.
    And I think it might also be a blessing, considering how dangerous it can be in real life.

    • @Akapaco2
      @Akapaco2 Před 18 dny

      MOPAR is short for "Motor Parts", which was Chrysler's main part supplier back in the day. The term MOPAR actually refers to any Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep/Ram vehicle, not just hellcats.
      Takeovers are definitely a North American thing. They used to do them in secluded areas, or in abandoned parking lots, but now people are getting bolder. I've seen Takeovers on busy interstates and in the middle of downtown. They can get really dangerous too. A lot of the cars are stolen, and here in Atlanta, it's not uncommon to have them end in gun shots.

    • @Havok1199
      @Havok1199 Před 15 dny

    I just went to a cars and coffee in my localish town and I waited in traffic for an hour and half just to get in. The number of cool cars I saw driving about or going in the other direction, was actually cooler than the meet itself. I'm into miatas and all we want to do is go drive......I'm down for meet ups, drive, and then meet up again and grab a bite to eat. Just the "car show" part....I'll pass. But some dudes in a parking lot with their shit boxes......I'll take that.

    The meets in my area are getting pretty bad. I am surprised we haven't been kicked out of our normal spots and our season haven't even started yet. All they do is rev bang and burnouts. Hell, there are people flying around with red and blue lights pretending to be a cop. I hope it gets better as the Cops are already coming down hard on us already.

    In Canada we had car "shows" - the organized/sponsored events and car meets - the bring what you own on a Friday night to the mall parking lot. Shows don't create takeovers, meets always do. Unfortunately, most of our meets have met their demise because of the issues a very few irresponsible drivers caused.
    But that being said, even a massive amount of our official car shows have met their demise due to sponsorship issues, lack of interest, lack of spaces, and the car culture changes over the last 2+ decades.
    I also feel like people have gotten bored because going from show to show, there will be different vehicles, but they were always the "same", if you catch what I'm saying. The " oh, look, another slammed Subaru", "another Civic on air", etc. It's difficult to have a vehicle stand out from others when there is a lot of different mods that haven't been done to a vehicle before.
    And as I type this, I feel it's a little hypocritical that my wife and I are planning to take a 5 hour road trip to go to the Toronto Importfest in July.

    but takeovers just need to stop. I can see them causing issues for us who just want to enjoy our cars. Takeovers are just kia boys and dudes from the hood. Not the enthusiast crowd. Any enthusiast worth his rep te37s knows that takeovers shouldn't be participated in.

    I mean, if you’re in Tennessee just go somewhere really rural like out on a road and slide your car in the road or whatever. That’s what we do where I live if people want to slide. There’s a time and a place for everything, the middle of a street on a busy intersection at 3 PM is not that place but a nice abandoned strip mine or nice abandon road with a big lot on it perfect. Grab your cars and your friends light a bonfire and just enjoy yourself.

    Hard to really enjoy car events when you got to worry about that 1 guy being an idiot that causes the event to get shut down. I live in Maryland where you had H2oi for years being seen as a parasite to the Maryland car scene despite the fact 70-80% of the event was people from out of state and at one point WAS great event you could relax and enjoy cars. The problem is that these takeovers got everyone worried about getting associated with them ( anyone who tried comparing an organize event to takeovers needs serious education)

The cops will even sometimes camp out cars and coffee meets. Likely cause they see it as revenue sadly..

    Street takeovers are ruining smaller meets, because police end up pooling the entire car community together. Not saying it's their fault, but when everything car community related that they interact with is some idiot crashing, hitting someone, or taking over a highway, it leaves a bad taste in their mouths. Our meets where I live have been decimated by this behavior and it sucks.

People have always raced their cars all the way back to the 1950s .We all need to be more responsible so we can still enjoy each others cars.

    Fast and furious made the modern car culture what it is now and the scene that made people love F&F was a street take over. "Street's closed pizza boy, find another way home". Car shows are a way for shops & corporations to make money with the least amount of risk. Racing, mudding, cruising and drifting is what most car enthusiasts spend money on. A large number of car guys race, drift & cruise what they drive and those guys are what made cars cool not shows.

    Car Shows aren't dead. I'd say it's more a car meet/meetup that grows and expands beyond the initial crowd where individuals intent on starting some dumb shit start showing up until things get out of hand. We have an extremely curated exotics show every weekend during the spring/summer here called Exotics at RTC and each time it's bonkers. But they have rules, they have goals and anyone that acts up isn't welcome back the next time. They even had bans on certain types of cars where enough of them had caused problems. They have a zero tolerance policy with revving, burnouts, anything like that cause the city approves of this and they essentially fill and entire shopping center with exotic Ferrari's, Porsches, McLarens and more. They even have themed weekends for classic American cars, Japanese cars and all sorts of things. There are a few others in the area that are also very picky and only allow certain kinds of cars and in limited numbers so you don't have a bunch of the same kind of car showing up so there's variety. But we still do have some great meet ups, cars and coffee events and all that without issue near me. It just takes a group of people that won't tolerate bullshit so it doesn't ruin it for everyone else.
