Game is incredible. I can’t get over how good the music is. How concise but impactful the story has been. Combat is even more fun than the first. They nailed it.
All the hype around OT2 made me check out the first game, and I'm really enjoying it. I'm so grateful that high quality old school RPGs are still getting made.
David-"Sometimes, you just gotta knock a bitch out"-Vinc
Don't think I've ever seen you praise a game this hard dude. In all seriousness, CZcams is exploding with videos of OT2 like this and they all have positive things to say, the hype is real! It's a Godsend it's on other Consoles and the future for this series is bright! Thanks David.
10 hours in and it’s hard to argue against it being a top 10 JRPG ever made. Everything is great and polished to a sheen.
I started this up last night and I’m kinda mad at myself for not starting earlier in the day! I did all of the first character chapter 1 that I picked and I just now ran into another one in another town so now I’m doing his chapter 1 and it’s fun so far! Very beautiful retro style. I love it so far!
I've enjoyed every minute so far. Like you, I grew up on pixel JRPGs from the late 80's through the SNES and beyond. There is something some "comfortable" in playing a truly traditional RPG, that has its own unique take on it, and an amazing art style and music. It reminds of the first time I played Final Fantasy IV and VI. The characters have a lot of charm, while at the same time telling good stories. The combat is awesome as well. I can't wait for Octopath 3 and I am not even closet to finishing 2. Usually, by the end of really lengthy RPGs (e.g., Persona 5, Xenoblade games, etc.) feel ready for everything to be over with well before the credits run, as they overstay their welcome and seem dragged out. After I beat the first game I wanted more, and given that this seems better than 1, I can't imagine this time being any different.
They made the stories much better. I'm loving the story branching and side routes. This is a good step up.
Do the characters feel more like a party this time? I never finished the first as the lack of interaction between the party members turned me off.
This brings me back to the 90s, absolute loving Octopath 2. It's perfect on the Steam Deck
After playing all weekend as well, this game is one of those games that keeps me up at night thinking about what I’m gonna do next and what parties I want to build. Just like the first one and I love it.
I kind of need that Final Fantasy II cutoff David. Absolute fire 🔥🔥🔥
So far, I'm only 3 1/2 prologue chapters in, and I'm loving it. That intro music really takes me back... 5 whole years.
So far, I'm glad to see we have a cleric who thinks realistically, rather than just another young, innocent, naive priest.
Welcome to the gun show
Saw this on steam for under $40 finally, looked for reviews...low and behold see yours pop up! Perfect timing, and high praise!
Just got my copy of this game today and I cannot wait to start playing, feel more excited after seeing ur review.
That shirt gave me strong nostalgia vibes
I got the game on release day but I'm so jealous of everyone else playing. I had to work ALL weekend, 12 hour shifts and barely had time to play. Thankfully today I'm off AND this coming weekend off too. It may be early but I also proclaim this as probably my game of the year! Starting as Osvald.
I enjoyed the demo, getting it next week and can't wait! I chose Osvald, it was the only description that kinda spoke to me. I mean it was so clearly a false accusation and I wanted to help, I wanted learn more. And now I have to wait. Hunter and apothecary were also interesting somewhat but not something I needed to jump in right away. Anyway I'm glad you're having a good time with it too, get well soon!
Great Game. Great Video: In OT2, you break enemies. In Ice Cube's song: Today was a Good Day, he says "Break Em!" I think of that every time I break an enemy.
Just got this game finally and I am LOVING it so much. And shout out to GA we still out here
I’ve been playing and loving this All weekend too. The exploration and battles and story and music have just been a blast. This was easily my most anticipated game of the year, and so far it’s living up to my expectations! What a great IP that harkens back to old school jrpgs. Thank you square Enix!
Also, those fire and smoke and even cloud effects…. Oh boy. I didn’t even mention the water effects. All beautiful
Awesome shirt! That was my favorite game for so long and it still holds a special place in my heart.
Sad to hear that ur sick 😫 🤒 but glad ur still able to enjoy this game so much I can't wait to get started on it 😊
You are going quickly. I am 21 hours into it since Friday, and I have only done 3 of the chapter 2 quests. And a special quest for Partitio
I'm glad to hear the sequel has improved on the 1st. I enjoyed Octopath's visual style and cast of characters. I couldn't help myself but hold FFVI in mind as I was playing. I felt as though I was essentially starting the game in the world of ruin and searching the world for the allies/friends I needed to win. That, to me, was a thrilling way to begin, but I was expecting the characters to become more narratively relevant between one another. That to me was a bit of a let down. I'm excited to hear the sequel makes more of an effort for the characters to bond and create a shared purpose within the party.
I remember being bed ridden with a staph infection for a few days and playing Albert Odyssey whenever I was well enough to pop some meds and get out of bed for a few hours.
I have to say I feel exactly the same. As someone who grew up in the same era of gaming you did, this is everything I wanted and more! I literally cannot put this game down it brings me so much joy!
I can't freakin' wait! I'm finishing up Octopath Traveler 1 in anticipation. It really scratches that old school RPG itch.
Damn, David. We are old lol. I’m going to be 39 in April so I know I’m a tiny bit younger but I’m still old too lol. The reason I say that is because you mentioned that your mom got you Dragon Warrior 3 for your NES when you were in fourth grade and broke your arm. Well that hit home how old we are because my son is currently in fourth grade and he broke his arm on his tenth birthday in December. I didn’t get him him Dragon Warrior 3 but he had my room for the few days he missed school before Christmas break playing Spider-Man on PS5. We’re old lol. All kidding aside it’s pretty cool to know that I may have given my son a nice memory of when he broke his arm just like your mom did for you when you broke your arm.
1994. I shattered my right kneecap. Spent a month being homeschooled. I replayed and completed Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy 2, and Link to the Past. Firmly ingraining rpgs and adventure games in my soul
I'm only halfway through the Chapter 1 stories and it's been really great so far.
Hi David YESSS absolutely AMAZING. I have close to 15 hrs in too on my Switch Light.
omg I love that shirt so much.
I just got Octo2 last night and I'll be playing it today.
Thank you if you did something about that window.
Great video! I haven’t had so much fun playing an rpg in awhile! Part of the magic I think is that it takes a bit of imagination / thinking when playing :)
Really excited to play. My copy is waiting for me to finish my current hard mode DQXI run…gotta hurry up!
Anyway thanks for the thoughts, glad to see that the game is living up to the hype I heaped on it 😬
Tx for sharing David.
I want to jump into this game so badly. I have my copy, but I’m worried that if I put down FF Tactics A2 and switch over to Octopath 2, I might never go back and finish Tactics A2. I’ve always been kind of a one RPG at a time player.
I wasn't sold on the Octopath series until I watched your review. I think I'll pick up both games now. Thank you, David.
I'm loving this game. The exploration is so awesome and you nailed it, David, I'm never bored. Everything is so interesting.
Great shirt and great video, hope you feel better soon.
This might be my favorite game on switch. Absolutely loving it!
Loving it so far. Will say that I don't quite get the day/night thing yet. Just seems to make it where you have to explore cities twice.
I'm so ready for my financial situations to get better, this one looks great.
i finally got around to play OT1 on steam, incredible game, addicting! and OG! style RPG, cant wait to finish it and play the 2nd.
I loved the demo on PS5. The 60 FPS are game changing for me. Even when playing such slower titles like Octopath Traveler. Is the version on Series X also FPS enhanced? I’m thinking about finishing the first one before starting part II. :)
It has that old school jrpg feel to it. That alone makes it great!
I bought the first OT on Steam, but have yet to play it (I'm waiting on getting a Steam Deck to play it). OT2 is on my wishlist, and I just love that old school style RPGs like this are getting so much love!
I am taking notes with a notebook as well. I know I am going to play it again since there are branching paths. It should/could save me time on the next time through. Anyway, a ton of fun :)
Glowing review! I may have to check it out.
I fell back in love with HD2D style because of the first octopath traveler, and have been waiting for the second one, now that it’s out, it’s my go to game. Fantastic game and I love the improvements from the prior game.
buddy - love the review, love the energy, love the shirt! just found your channel and will look at past videos. awesome job!
Awesome! Thank you!
Really enjoying this (at about 15 hours in as well). I wish there was a little more guidance about the side quests though lol. My biggest hurdle was that I'd not actually played a grindy rpg in such a long time and i'd forgotten about it. I was looking at a level 13 danger area when I was level 10 and felt stuck and frustrated - until i remembered what i was supposed to do. Sucha throwback.
I wish that random encounters would stop if you were X levels over the danger (and so no longer get a worthwhile amount of xp from the area) That would make backtracking and exploring a lot more pleasant.
I sound too critical. These are just nitpicks. The game has been so much fun and constantly makes me smile.
I don't worry about the side quests. They just naturally wrap up if you visit all the towns and use all the actions. I never try to finish them when i pick them up initially.
Love this game I got the thief the mage and jst now working on chapter 1 for the cleric I need to get to lvl 16 or so before I can do any of the cchapter twos. And all of the stories so far are good The cleric and thief combo at night is so OP. Your so far ahead of me haha I dont even got all the characters yet. I even stepped into a 47 danger zone and ran so fast. I think the only one that has the biggest chance to topple this is eiyriden chronicals it too should have the retro fill but yeah this really brings you back just like chained ecchos did.
Octopath Traveler 1 was a great game, Octopath Traveler 2 is a masterpiece.
I'll definitely have to give this one a try!
I'm having a BLAST. But yeah the year's young, and this year promises to be a stacked year. Trails to Reverie. FF16 and 7 Remake. But if I'm going to hedge my bets on games that might be Octopath 2 a run for its money on GOTY (for me), I think it will either be Eiyuden Chronicle, or Sea of Stars. Like you, I'm a retro gamer at heart, and those games seem to also promise to offer that kind of experience.
I’m about 15 hours deep as well. Really liking how the world map is more complex than the first game. Feels like I’ll never run out of things to explore. Music is incredible, though the cave music and the snow area music isn’t quite as good as last time. But some other pieces are just stunning
Glad you received your collectors edition I'm still waiting for mine to arrive... God UPS sucks so bad they have already delayed mine twice now 😫
The game is like just over 100 hours via 100% completion and it's as long as the first Octopath, if not longer. I haven't gotten my hands on the game yet, and looking for a physical copy since I get tired of having to rearrange, archive and redownload digital copies. But I heard this game is considerably better than the previous game which was already amazing in its own right.
This and Chained Echoes have been my biggest binges lately among RPGs.
Hi David! This is definitely a game I plan on purchasing!
Very nice review! Hope you feel better soon!
Thank you!
Heard good things about this game, don't have a lot of time to play these days but I may have to pick this up. Hope you feel better soon!
Sounds pretty good. I might try out the demo first on Steam to see how it plays.
That shirt is amazing.
Very excited to play but I’ve started the Atelier games & I am hooked ! Good video 🇦🇺👍
Suns out, Final Fantasy 4 GUNS OUT!💪😎
I was going to wait on some full reviews before picking up the game. But the way you're talking it up, I don't know if I can wait that long.
I've completed all of the chapter 1's, and a couple chapter 2's. I love exploring and everything about the game, it reminds me of when I first played final fantasy 6 back in the day 😂
Hi David, hope you are having a great day. Loving Octopath Traveller 2 as well. Take care.
Love this game. Also i need to know where you got that shirt
100 percent agree with you on game of the year so far for all of the reasons you said, and it's going to be hard to beat it; maybe Eyuiden Chronicles if it really captures everything that made Suikoden great. This game really adds onto an outdoes the first one. It also looks insanely good on pc at 120 fps and max resolution.
I'm happy that it's actually good. The first game had SUCH potential, but the pacing killed it for me. Looks like I'm grabbing this, then.
I love the gaming experiences I've had when sick. While Octo 2 looks great I never beat the first one so I'll have to look forward to two when I finally get around to that.
I'm loving it! Much better than the first one imo.
I've finished 5 chapter 1s and still have 2 more characters to collect. I have barely scratched the surface but thought I would have this baby done before Pixel Remasters come out on the 19th. Not so sure now. It's gonna be a fun ride until FF16, which I'm cautiously optimistic about.
Ok David you convinced me.. I went with this and decided to hold off on Redemption Reapers.. Maybe I’ll do that one in the spring or summer.. I started the game yesterday and I’m impressed being a couple hours in.. It seems more polished than it’s predecessor and very well made..
Strangely it made me wanna pick up Diofield Chronicle again last night dunno why.. Even though not HD2D it does kinda feel like the same subseries by SquareEnix for us rpg nerds..
I super love this game!!! 🥺🥰 Can’t wait to get my Collector’s Edition!!!
The game is absolutely incredible. All I'm pretty much doing is grabbing the characters and just exploring right now. I've chose Temenos as my partner, cause healing is a big deal to me. An I simply love his personality. 2 days in and I'm simply satisfied with this. I can't wait to explore more.
I played a little of the demo. I think it's really fun. I won't tackle full game until I beat the first game.
I love the shirt David and I pray for your health sir
I'm over here working through some of my backlog and you're making me want to buy these octopath games.
Great review
I've been playing this 24/7 since it came out it's amazing, loved the first game but the sequel is even better in every way
I did a dumb thing and order it online for my ps5, didnt ship on friday, will ship this week, should have bought it in the store directly on friday :) Anyway, gonna be an insane RPG year for the ps5: This, Diablo 4, Baldurs Gate 3, Reverie, Final Fantasy 16, Eiyuden Chronicle AND in development to it, dragon quest 12, kotor 2, the spiritual sequel to wild arms and shadow hearts. I am very very very HAPPY to own a ps5 right now. I dont need to be told about pc gaming, I get it, but they dont get physical copies to put in the shelf which I have done since 1990 back with the NES here in Sweden.
What you are describing is how I felt playing Chained Echoes. If you haven't already, go play it! The ending nearly left me in tears.
I knew it was gonna be great, but it’s already one of my favorite RPGs. Also, you gotta let me know where you got that classic FFII shirt from.
I feel like the team really looked at feedback from the original and pushed to make Octopath 2 the best they possibly could.
...I really need to finally go back and finish the first one xD
David, what part of Georgia were you from? Also, love the shirt!
I just got into town to pick up "Partitio" the strange Italian gold prospector. I'm from the south but I might not use this character because of the voice acting...
I got a PSVR2 and while it is technologically impressive, I've been ignoring it because I cannot stop playing Oc2path. This game is phenomenal.
Looking forward to it going on sale so I can grab it. Money is tight so need to wait. 🤓
Yes, I played the demo and I was hooked. Had a tough time choosing a main character but Partitio mains, let's gooooo!!
HA! I also bought a switch version (for the best buy steelbook) and the PS5 collectors! Neither have been delivered yet ☹
I played the first one and liked it a lot, but it did feel bland in some spots. But I also didn't get very far in it either. I love 2 a lot and I feel guilty enough to want to finish 1 now before I get too far into 2.
But before I can do either, I got to get this Tactics Ogre bug out of me.
Thumbs up solely bc of the great shirt!
I canceled my collectors edition pre order when I found out best buy was doing a steelbook bundle.
I’m enjoying it for sure, but my wish is that they would find a way to do something a little more linear and cohesive for the story in the next installment. I really want a traditional story with this style of gameplay. I have to skip through half of the dialogue/stories because they’re just too simple and hokey. The villains are just pure evil to the point of it being silly. But the soundtrack is absolutely amazing, and it is definitely fun to play. I just want to see if they can do something really powerful with storytelling…it has the foundation, but it’s still a little shallow (just like bravely default)
Any comments for someone who saw a lot of good in the first one but was disappointed by the lack of connecting narrative and somewhat shallow fetch quests? I want to like this game, and if they improved those over the first I think it’s for me! Let me know, thanks in advance
I've played 8 hours as Throne then realized who you start with is locked into your party so I restarted as Osvald. I'm LOVING the game. My biggest complaint is that when you go back to do other characters story chapters you're reset to level 1 (or 17 w/e) without the weapons/skills you've learned.
I understand, they want you to experience the chapters at that level. But it also feels like a punishment for not taking that character. If I start as Osvald and collect everyone, get to Hikari's area with some good weapons I don't like being forced down to level 1 with crap gear. If you're someone like me who likes to play the game then go back and clear that content later it feels like a massive downgrade and is honestly pretty annoying.
That said I'm loving this game. I love the characters, their stories, the art and music is just fantastic. My absolute favorite thing though was having my 9 year old son sitting by my side and when I finished playing him asking if he could start a run. I said sure, I come back and he's started as Ochete and he's SUPER into the game. I love watching my kids fall in love with the kind of games I grew up on.
@omensoffate oh that's good to know I hadn't done anyone's second chapter yet because I didn't want to mess with the deleveling. Thanks!
It's abit of a double edge sword on one hand you get to experience all the first chapters as they would be if you started with that character.
On the other hand you also be playing for a long time before you get to actually use your party if you decide to do all the chapter 1 stories before starting on chapter 2.
