This is a big split with a lot of people in gaming. Some don't mind it. Others think it takes away from the feeling of getting stronger. It's not as noticeable in ff8 cause the junction system breaks shit if you allocate spells properly for stats. A lot if people feel that the Stat functioning also discouraged the use of spells.

It's always amazing to me how different we all are. Two of my favorite games are on this list. I did like Zestiria enough to play it twice, but it's my least favorite Tales game. I've also played Legaia 2 several times, but it's not a favorite--just a fun time for me. But Suikoden 3 and FF8 have been played tons of times over the years. Once I understood the best mechanic of FF8 was not to level at all, but to turn every monster into a card, it was fun to figure out exactly how to do that. However, there are plenty of games I hate that everyone else loves, and I'm almost always in the minority on both sides of the equation.

Relatable, I was also disappointed by DQM on GBA 😂 and I was such a big DQ and DQM fan.
Here are some of my hot takes, because I'm bored sitting in the tub:
    1. Crisis Core - Zack's great, but I thought the combat and mission structure were boring.
    2. Kingdom Hearts - I actually really like the story 😂 but find the gameplay mindless.
    3. Fallout 3 - I do count it as part RPG. Just couldn't get into the brown atmosphere and gun mechanics.
    4. Pokemon Legends: Arceus - I'm with most, that the first few hours are addicting. And then the tedium and essay-long, needless dialogue begins. No-one who raved about this game and called it "the new era of Pokemon!" finished it.
    5. Bowser's Inside Story - Every game after Superstar Saga got worse.
    6. Skyrim - 99% of people who praise this game never finished it. The main quest is so balls, idc what you say, it drives me to drink.
    7. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon " " - let's turn Shiren the Wanderer into a 40 hour long 4kids special.
    8. YoKai anything - Idgaf about these kids, let me play the game and explore some.
    9. Earthbound - I don't hate it, but I direct you to Mother 3.
    10. Play a real SMT game (except Persona 3 is pretty awesome aside from the main dungeon)

You're supposed to expend items in a game for use during it is what he told me and games like this one expect you to do that. He also seemed to have no trouble with the add hits to get the increased combos rolling. It's really just taking the time to learn when to time those. Having played FF8 I wish FF9 was on the list. Good story with classic characters but so many side quest things for good equipment that could go wrong I don't want to try playing it. I mean... Who puts in the time to gain Excalibur II?

It's not the fact that it's turned-based that kills it for me (I actually love turn-based games), it's how slow battles feel. I know that's sorta the point, but for me, the combat quickly becomes so repetative with how slow everything is. There's a lot I want to say, and I don't know where to begin, so this is going to look unorganized.
I turned against you when you said you didn't like LoD I LOVED IT!!!!!!! LoD is a MASTERPIECE!! I LOVED the story! There are HUGE Shamalayan-level twists that make it replayable.. The second time you play through it, you think, "Why didn't I see that?" (It's hard to talk about the twists without giving away spoilers.) Then there's the combat system. I like the additions system. The amount of damage you did to an enemy wasn't determined by the RNG gods. If you didn't do as much damage as you wanted, it was probably your own fault for not hitting the additions. Some additions were hard, yes, but some were easy, and you didn't have to finish the hardest additions for the characters. You could stay at the hardest one you could do and just go from there. I kinda liked that almost all the characters were useful except for one. Kongol was completely useless, and I like that the useless character was utterly and totally useless. It made deciding what your party would look like a little less stressful because there was always one character you would never use. It had one of the best final boss experiences of any game ever. The final boss had multiple forms, and it was head and shoulders harder than any other encounter in the game. That's the way you do it. I turned against you when you said you hated it because one of its big fan boys is typing right now.
I turned back to you when you said you hated Final Fantasy VIII. I agree with you that it was the WORST of the series. The junction system was needlessly complex, the stroy was vomit-inducingly mushy, level grinding did no good, and it had one of the WORST protagonists ever! We're supposed to LIKE Squall? No! I don't understand why FF VIII has any fans, or why it's defended. Worst of the series. I agree with you there.
There are some games that I didn't like:
Xenogears: The story was convoluted, level grinding did no good for your gear, it was too linear with only a few useless side quests at the end, the platforming parts gave me a huge headache, and disc two was too story-heavy with little game play.
Earthbound: Grindy as all hell. An uninteresting story. Preachy religious theme at the end. Not for me at all.
Final Fantasy XII: Uninteresting story about bad guy empire. Everyone could do everything system where it didn't matter what character you used because it mattered more what job class you assigned to them. I feel like this game was not linear ENOUGH. It was sometimes unclear just what in the heck you were supposed to be doing, and while there was a big world to explore, one wrong turn could make you end up in a place you weren't supposed to be and get game overed by super strong enemies. It has its fans, but I'm not one of them.

  • @Lastjustice
    @Lastjustice Před měsícem

I haven't played all these games, but I will comment on the ones I have or have an opinion on.
    - Suikoden 3, I think you have approach with the right attitude. If you're expecting more of the same as Suikoden 1 and 2, then you will not enjoy it. They took alot of risks, and sure not all of them worked out as well as one would hope, but there's alot they got right and unfortunately they threw the baby out with the bath water for Suikoden 4. (Basically made a more watered down version of Suikoden 1.) The skill system added alot of depth to the game, and made characters crazy powerful. The trinity sight system was a good idea, as this game takes advantage of the massive cast, as you have far more reason to use multiple characters rather than just stick to your favorite six and bench the rest. Due to 3D graphics being a new thing, this game suffered for it, as they reuse the same areas too much, and it made the combat clunkier to have characters paired together since they had a harder time to make the AI work, but I feel it added alot to the experiences having characters have more attributes which factored into the skill system. I'd love to see another game take the parts of what Suikoden 3 got right, and lean into them rather than regress the series as they did. I still really like Suikoden 3 as I replayed after making perfect saves of 1 and 2 , then made Chris lvl 99 to max out everything.(It takes alot to repeat.) I love you can win every battle, even the ones you're suppose to lose or run from. I can get people who didn't like it as I was expecting to be a bigger better game like S2 was for part 1, but once I let myself enjoy the game I did have, I had way more fun with it.
    - Final Fantasy 8, Yes, this game sucks. The game is a bimbo, nice to look at, but has nothing of substance. The story is just weird for the sake of weird, even amoung other final fantasy games. Was like they threw 4 stories into a meatgrinder, and gave us this story sausage. The combat and conjunction system is all wacky, as they turn gaining lvls into a bad thing. You basically need to know this or you can get stonewalled late in the game if you aren't prepared to tackle the end. Magic is hoarded and used for stats which drawing is super boring. I watched both my roommates at the time play thru it, and I never felt the desire to pick up and play the game myself. I was good. Just watching them play it passively told me everything I needed to know. If this game had any redeeming qualities I would started playing it myself after being bombarded with it for hundreds of hours. I've played the majority of FF games and beaten them. I am content to not waste my time on it directly.
    - Legend of Dragoon , another rpg my roommates play the crap out. I picked it up as a greatest hits I tried play it, but the combat was too involved as makes every encounter a chore. My middle brother gave it a shot but he lost interest quickly too. Like FF 8 both these games got by on their visuals but didn't give the player much else.
    - Legend of Legaia 2 , I bought fairly cheap and let sit in my backlog for awhile. I got hurt at work, and dislocated my left arm. I was off work for like a month, and couldn't do much. So I decided play a Jrpg since I could do it slowly or with one hand. I grabbed Legaia 2 and went through it in my time off. I enjoyed it thought was a decent game. I think the super moves could stop having the names flash before you perform them as it zooms in and stops the action everytime you do them, making combat take longer than it needs to. (The first game only showed certain super moves names or the first time you learned an attack.) I had alot of time on my hands so i didn't get too worked up over the slower pace. (I also power grinded midway thru. There's a forest that had enemies you weren't supposed to face yet as a way to keep you from going thru it. I'd stay by the door then I'd fire off all my best spells and kill them then run back to the inn. Rinse and repeat. They were super fast exp. I was probably on a much higher lvl making the game way easier.) That said it's fun beating the holy hell out of enemies with stupidly long combos, particularly the bosses as you know they might survive a couple attacks from you so you go all out. It's shame the series stopped, as I liked the core aspects of the combat system, and think another rpg needs lift ideas from it in the future. I can see how someone might not have enjoyed it(especially with Maya being unable to fight for first chunk of the game, which combat kinda of the selling point of the game.)but I'd say it's a C+ or B- game. I've played much much worse. (Unlimited Saga makes all these games seem like gold by comparison.)

Usually always agree with you, bummed suikoden 3 is here. Your points are valid but loved learning about the grasslands and Luc's plight abd realizations.

Never heard of Caravan Heart. huh. EDIT: Losing HP as you step because of hunger reminds me more of western RPGs like the old Exile trilogy for the Mac. I agree that's super annoying. lol

    I LOVE LOVE ff8.
But I have to agree, the leveling is bonkers.
When I was younger and didn't yet know to make separated saves, I got perma stuck inside Lunatic Pandora at the beggining of CD4. I couldn't get out and Adel would savagely kick my ass instantly 😂
I still love the game, its story and characters, but the gameplay... Uhhhhhhh

Legend of Dragoon for me it was decent, it wasn't THAT good but it did have some notable moments for me (Mostly Lavitz related and that "law city") . However, I felt the final battle REALLY shat the bed, we get an encounter with multiple forms and cool conceptual transitions, yet...the music doesn't change despite it fading out and in between transformations, that really killed the mood IMO. The OST was also just... ok with some gems like the Menu theme and a couple of towns thems, but battle music was pretty lacking IMO.

Baulder's Gate on that fact that it's alright, nothing too spectacular. Really I don't have a game like that, I tend to see the good in a game and enjoy that.
If this was rpgs no matter quality, Fragrant Story hands down.

I love FFVIII but completely agree with everything you said. It makes me sad they didn't put effort in across the board, but that's always been Square's problem.

The only good thing about Legaia 2 was the combo system. It reminded me of Xenogears

I agree with you on Tales of Zestiria and FF8. FF8 has good characters, but the story did not engage with me. The whole time travel narrative really does your head in. The draw system is very tedious and just not a great magic system. It's cool how you can pair them to your stats, but drawing magic in every battle is not fun. Zestiria too had problems with its convoluted equipment system and the way combos work. Other RPGs I feel the same way about are Persona 2 Innocent Sin, Infinite Undiscovery, and FFXIII: Lightning Returns.
