The random encounters are kinda important to stop you from wandering into high level areas and grabbing all the good items in early game, especially without risk. I think they can make something like a repel from pokemon, which stops random encounters which is lower level than you
The world that SE and Aquire have crafted within the OT series is so gorgeous - with a mesmerising soundtrack to boot - that I couldn't not jump right back in! Loving this game and will continue to do so until everyone around me rips my vocal chords out for humming the main theme so much.

@reklom vera Yes, the 8 main jobs are the same, but in the first or 2nd chapter (I started with Throne and went to Temenos) I was given the option for a 2nd job and it was Inventor. I don't know all the secondary jobs, but I know they are different, and they also updated the primary classes with some fantastic QoL changes and some additional skills (5 support skills vs. 4 in the first game) along with latent skills and day/night skills like Throne the thief still steals during the day, but can ambush and knock someone out at night. The hunter Ochette has a 25% chance to capture a monster after she's defeated it at least once, which makes it so much easier to capture and keep a roster of support monsters and will be nice for those rarer monsters later on in the game. *edit* just got to Hikari and the ability to store up to 5 skills from people you challenge as warrior is an amazing skill IMO
Actually in the same world as the first game its just the second game took place in a different continent. There are playable characters in Octopath Traveler COTC that wears a Kimono and in one character's introduction mentioned about their hometown in the eastern continent and thats probably Solistia which its the continent of the 2nd game

There is SOME connection to the first game. The Flamebringer is back again, even though this is a different world. I've only just started the game, so I have no idea if there's anything to his inclusion, but it doesn't seem like just a name drop.
As an old school jrpg fan this game is definitely refreshing. Simple yet difficult definitely a must pick and play if u enjoyed the golden era of jrpgs on PlayStation 1
Planning to 100% anyway, but does the map tell you if there's a new secondary job? In any case there may be the same 8 jobs but it looks like they fleshed out secondary ones, possibly even more of them total, first had 3? Not counting jobs that are also mains like scholar. Speaking of, didn't find any around scholars starting point in 2.
The biggest improvement is to the individual character stories. In the first one, the game was structured to follow a very precise formula and the story often suffered for it. You would be introduced to a situation, use field skills to expand on the situation which would take you to a dungeon, explore the dungeon to the end and then fight a boss. In Octopath 2, sometimes your character will arrive to a location and already know exactly what they need to do so they won't need to use field skills in town to get going, sometimes there is a boss they will have to fight within the city so there is no dungeon, and sometimes there won't even be a boss in a chapter. The writers were given much more freedom to tell the stories they wanted to tell rather than forcing the story to fit a specific box. As far as combat goes, I wish there were difficulty options because I find myself having no problems even when I am fighting enemies 10 levels above me, but apparently this game is also hard for some people. So adding an easy mode and a hard mode would go a long way. I think all they would really have to do is give enemies more shield points with less weaknesses on hard, and reduce the damage enemies deal to you on easy. I also wish there was some kind of EXP sharing because some of my characters really fell behind and rather than being the hero of their story, they were more like dead weight being dragged through their chapters by my better party members.
Been playing a whole lot over my spring break (nearly 40 hours in now) and this is 100% my game of the year; I’ve seen lots of complaints about certain things but honestly I don’t think a single one of them is valid, this game is just amazing.
I can only say this is a BEAUTIFUL game. An amazing mix between FF and Golden Sun and that is a huge compliment I can give to any RPG. BTW I see absolutely NOTHING wrong with recycling the mechanics from previous games. Why fixing something that is not broken?
I disagree with the "grindfest" aspect. Most of the stats you will get comes from equips. That way you are rewarded for exploring, reaching new towns, use path actions to retrieve (somehow) those itens from NPCs; not for fighting per se. You can play de game in any order, disregarding the common sense to do each each first chapter, then each second chapter...
I wish they would hurry up & utilize this HD-2D design on the best classic JRPG ever made: Final Fantasy 6! Would also like to see them replace random encounters with onscreen enemies if they could still find a way to remain faithful to the original's overall gameplay mechanics at the same time. I'd also love HD-2D remakes of DQ5 & Chrono Trigger too!
To note that both the Switch & PC are the only places you can play both the first & second game. On the Playstation side of things, only the second game is available, while the Xbox side of things, only the first game is available. Kind of weird, maybe in the future time changes that. But yes, PC is one of the definitive platforms to play the series.
Gotta admit, this was the reason to get a Switch for me. It's also the first new game I've gotten in more than 10 years. It's definitely not a disappointment. Looks like Square Enix might actually be getting their act together again. Definitely a recommend!
SOMETIMES SE is "getting their act together". Then there's Diofield chronicles and other duds that released last year... can't even remember their names lol. Triangle strategy was decent, this one is definitely not for me, but well received. SE still bombs more than they hit though
@@ricardodarcangelo2437 I'm not saying they don't have their issues. They've always had their issues. However, I like to think that they're getting back on an upswing. Now, I could be wrong, but I think they're really making an effort to get back to their roots.
Just wondering, is the rant about about random encounters just about random encounters or is it because you have to randomly fight? Because in this game and it's predecessor you *WANT* to fight as you will get your ass handed to you. Just saying.
I don't know who to start off with. I've been pondering for the past 4-5hrs. Can't decide between warrior, thief, healer, and hunter. Update: going with the thief
Same here. I think wizard or hunter. I want both in my team for sure. Then the cleric or apothecary and thief. Or both cleric and apo, or would that be useless (for buffs/heals)? I know nothing about this game 😅. Just wanna play for story and pretty graphs lol.
i like it, if games change little to not at all between sequels. it makes them feel more like part of a whole, instead of a gimmick. i dont need two towers to have holographic images, just because fellowship of the ring is a book. and i dont need return of the kings to be an interactive VR-experience. sometimes we force change, just for changes sake. i just want more of octopath traveler 1. The "it needs to have something new with every sequel" is what lead us to FF16, being action-combat-oriented (allthough it doesn't bother me. it's just how the tides force change, even unwanted) or breath of fire to change itself into obscurity being abandoned alltogether.
Yeah, I take your point on the "forcing change for change's sake" point. That's true, and not necessarily a positive. However, in the case of a long running, high sales franchise like FF, the change to action based combat was refreshing. Cuz everyone that plays rpgs wants to see what Final Fantasy is doing next, but the traditional rpg (jrpg) combat is more niche these days, and not broadly appealing. FF is the mainstream for rpgs now, so the change makes sense. I grew up on the traditional rpgs and Srpgs, and I get why they are loved, and of course, don't want to see them disappear... but I also would like to play FF16, as I have with every FF besides 11/14, and the combat is a change that needed to happen. Plus, many who "hate" the switch to more action, haven't really tried good action rpgs, and might be surprised to find they enjoy them once they learn it. Still, SE should do some spin offs or something, that keep the old school combat, to give those who only enjoy that style something for them too. Change is great if it brings new ideas, and gets more people into playing rpgs, and maybe going back to the classics; but ousting your longest supporters isn't great... I'm sure it wasn't an easy choice
The one thing I didn't like and that's why I quit the first one is that it was just a bunch of little stories taped together. Is this really the same? Do characters interact more with each other? Is there a cohesive bigger story? As much as I liked every else, I just couldn't keep playing because of that.
It would be nice if you played it on the stream, really would like to watch your streams, you one of the best rewiever of jrpg games on whole youtube, if not the only one
What i'd like to know from someone who played some of it is if the game is as grindy in term of money as OT1. Cause i remember running in circles in caves with the merchant to grind money...it took forever and was sooo boring.
I would say this game is a direct upgrade from the last game. A bunch of quality of life changes and it just feels great to play. Totally love the stories too, maybe a bit less for Agnea, it is a bit too sunny for my taste
i think it’s good they have the full spectrum tonally- Agnea-happy go lucky, determination. Temenos- Sherlock Holmes, Hikari- monarchy struggles, Throne- slavery, Ochette-Pokemon, Oswald-Prison Break/Framed, Partitio(imo the weakest story, benevolent businessman? You rarely see this trope in media.) Casiti-G rated memento. They went HARD with Primrose’s prologue. I was hoping it goes Game of Thrones where your main characters can have permadeath in some story completion. But it would be a nighmare to finish. Even George RR can’t finish his stories.
I loved the first one. But I got over it after about 15-20yrs. The grinding was just to brutal. It was insane. I’m sure this is pretty much the same. Which sucks for players who don’t want the aggressive grinding.
I mean, the first game isn't out for 15 years yet. But also, it wasn't grindy at all IMO! Yes some of the battles could be very hard, Galdera itself took me a few attemps, and whenever you jumped from one chapter to the next it could get brutal. But using the game mechanics, you could manage! Leveling up didn't help much to get stronger in the late game really; items are more important, and money is easy to come by especially with Tressa in the team
Yes, the Damm grind gets tedious. I would've liked that the new characters you met are the same level as you, like in many of the Atelier games, where it depends more if you're prepared for the hard bosses than level
I beat the first game and didn't grind once seriously... I feel the only reason anyone who says they had to grind was being lazy/stubborn cuz they didn't want to try a different strategy if the died to a boss...
I thoroughly enjoyed the first game and so far its the same with this one, but i will say that leveling up is a bit too grind-y as it was in the first game.
I understand the frustration in general with random encounters but this game is pretty tame with them the rate at which you get them seems reduced. In fact it feels like it takes a while to grind because it’s so reduced.
Too bad I won't have time for this one for a few months I think. Just finished Fire Emblem Engage, gotta play through Like a Dragon Isshin and Persona 3 as I've never played it.
The random encounters are kinda important to stop you from wandering into high level areas and grabbing all the good items in early game, especially without risk. I think they can make something like a repel from pokemon, which stops random encounters which is lower level than you
Yeah I definitely agree with you completely about the repel. Or may that lower area you get less lower random encounters
The first Octopath game had an item that if equipped to your character would stop random encounters almost completely.
Does anyone know if there's a character with a passive ability to reduce spawns like cyrus from the first game?

I bought octopath traveler 2 for playstation 5 I wish they made a lot more rpgs like this for all consoles. These was the golden years of rpgs to me.
They have a revamped dragon quest game coming soon like this
just by looking at it, it remains me of radiant historia
For people who say "Square Enix does not care about turn-based games anymore" show them Octopath Traveler, Dragon Quest, Bravely Default, Tactics Ogre Reborn, Live A Live and many others!
lol Osvald and Thorne' are the two characters I played with first for the prologues.
the first game i pre ordered this year.and its just february! waiting for FFTactics remake/remaster and triangle strategy 2. atelier ryza 3 is just a few weeks away too!
There is SOME connection to the first game. The Flamebringer is back again, even though this is a different world. I've only just started the game, so I have no idea if there's anything to his inclusion, but it doesn't seem like just a name drop.
And Dohter. And Alephan.
As an old school jrpg fan this game is definitely refreshing. Simple yet difficult definitely a must pick and play if u enjoyed the golden era of jrpgs on PlayStation 1
There's two confirmed secret secondary jobs from the launch trailer first is warlord job and the second is unknown job that's similar to dancer
Can you IMAGINE an HD2D Golden Sun game?!
Awesome review Erick. You always got the best vids when it comes to RPGs
Yeah. The game is not a grindfest at all. If you just explore u never need to grind literally
I love Hikari's path action. makes me actually want to challenge people in the game because I can learn a new skill
Till you find a Grandma who one shots you
I'd like to hear your opinion on the Octopath Traveller mobile game. I've seen people praising it in Facebook groups, but I'm unsure about F2P rpgs.
I had no idea there was a PC version. That will probably be the one I pick up then
To note that both the Switch & PC are the only places you can play both the first & second game. On the Playstation side of things, only the second game is available, while the Xbox side of things, only the first game is available. Kind of weird, maybe in the future time changes that. But yes, PC is one of the definitive platforms to play the series.
dl'd the demo on ps4, really enjoying the game looking forward to buying it.
friedn- ‘sup?.breathtaking footage,🙂
Why is your review not covering all quests for 300 hours play?
No need to break something that ain't broken. It looks really good. Much excited to play it.
i think you mean No need to "fix" something that ain't broken
The most honest video game reviewer on the CZcamss
Love this game, that soundtrack is fire.
I don't know who to start off with. I've been pondering for the past 4-5hrs. Can't decide between warrior, thief, healer, and hunter.
Update: going with the thief
Hunter for most balanced
@civoreb hunters storyline is good plus you can pick your own pet this time round thay just adds to the annoyance of which pet to pick agh...
Same here. I think wizard or hunter. I want both in my team for sure. Then the cleric or apothecary and thief. Or both cleric and apo, or would that be useless (for buffs/heals)? I know nothing about this game 😅. Just wanna play for story and pretty graphs lol.
I liked the their in the first game
@duploh download and play the demo. If you could play through all 8 characters.
i like it, if games change little to not at all between sequels. it makes them feel more like part of a whole, instead of a gimmick. i dont need two towers to have holographic images, just because fellowship of the ring is a book. and i dont need return of the kings to be an interactive VR-experience. sometimes we force change, just for changes sake. i just want more of octopath traveler 1.
It is absolute FANTASTIC.
Still need to get around to playing the first one.
Cause i remember running in circles in caves with the merchant to grind money...it took forever and was sooo boring.
because Random encounters are a genre staple and that's a good thing, if you don't want them, play a different genre instead
My copy wont deliver until monday...i will be out of town until the following Saturday... oh well :(
I loved the first one.
There should be a difficulty option for new players or for those playing for the story.
@@Hajinrei yeah! I have very limited time, so grinding just for grinding is something that i don't want to do anymore
This thing is a tribute to all fans of JRPGs. What an amazing game. 10/10 for me.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first game and so far its the same with this one, but i will say that leveling up is a bit too grind-y as it was in the first game.
My Goty this year for sure.
Demo Is great
I understand the frustration in general with random encounters but this game is pretty tame with them the rate at which you get them seems reduced. In fact it feels like it takes a while to grind because it’s so reduced.
Too bad I won't have time for this one for a few months I think. Just finished Fire Emblem Engage, gotta play through Like a Dragon Isshin and Persona 3 as I've never played it.
Fantastic OST
I haven’t played any of these games, they look absolutely fantastic. I wish Square would remake FF VI or Chrono Trigger in this style
Turn-based is one of the single best things about this studio.
I'm glad it doesn't have anything to do with the first one tbh. This world feels... I don't know just a little bit spicier.
"skeel"
I'm poor so I'll wait for sale
