    I'm with you on the hand-drawn character sprites. Honestly, they wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for those noses. They look like something out of one of those 'How to Draw Anime' books that you can tell were made by people who know very little about the artform.

    I've actually been wanting to pick this one up myself before long! While I feel pretty similar to you when it comes to indie RPGs, but RoTP grabbed my attention with its early trailers, and if it gets your stamp of approval, I know it's good xD
    I totally feel you on the character portraits. The art certainly isn't bad, and I don't mind 'em, even in 26-bit throwback games, but boy is it out of sync with the rest of the visual design

    I'm about 7 hours in with an indie RPG called Shadow Fate, and by god it's sooooo good! I've already picked up Rise of the Third Power and I had beaten Ara Fell in the past, but I'd recommend Shadow Fate to you David. It's got a really cool battle system, amazing pixel character animations, and it fits right in with the 90s jrpg aesthetics. The first quarter of the game even feels like something out of FF7.

  • @giuseppejoseph8890
    @giuseppejoseph8890 Před 2 lety

    Oh damn you just reviewed it! I finished it last month. All in all, I thought it was an interesting game. It was more open than Ara Fell (which I would still love to see a sequel for). The music was fantastic and the story itself was pretty good. I like when certain things start to heat up towards the end.

    I hate the grainy low-res font. Hate hate hate it.
    The original games were grainy and low-res because the hardware of the time couldn't do any better, not because the developers thought that it would be ironically retro or something. I don't have a problem with simple graphics, but I do have a problem with pointless eye strain.

    Is David coming around to paying attention to indie games? The last video I saw from him was about a Final Fantasy 5 inspired indie RPG with a job system and heavy focus on crystal gathering that looked cool. He often says that he doesn't engage with the indie scene, but maybe that is changing. A lot of indie games are more reminiscent of the RPGs from the 90s that inspired them, and David has asserted his opinion that he isn't as interested in the big budget new releases as he used to be. Also a lot of the new JRPGs are moving towards fast paced, edge of your seat action like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, FFXVI, and the new Trails arc, so it is nice to still have classic turn-based options. In the end a game should be judged on it's own merits and not whether it was made by a multi-million dollar AAA studio, or by a small group of passionate individuals working on something they genuinely care about.

    • @davidvinc
      @davidvinc  Před 2 lety +2

      @@davidvinc I get that. If you take a look through Steam's storefront there are a crap ton of RPG maker games and the like that can be subpar RPG experiences. I find it hard to hate on them though as they are often made by regular people who are learning as they go. I did enjoy Cosmic Star Heroine, Ara Fell, Fell Seal: Arbiters Mark, and Stardew Valley. I might not have given Fell Seal a chance until you recommended it. As a FFTactics inspired strategy RPG with a deep job system, it scratched the right spots. See you in the next video David :)

    The portraits look like the were ripped from a different game from the iOS or App store and ported into this one.

    Thanks for reviewing this one. While I do like a lot of indie games, most of those tend to be metroidvanias rather than RPGs so I'm a little more hesitant when it comes to diving head-first into the latter. With your review, I've now seen a couple of positive reviews from sources I find to be reliable so I'll probably get this game and give it a try. I'm not fond of the style of the character portraits either, but I think the battle sprites for the characters look great and I'm wanting to see more of that.
    There is quite a bit of bias against RPG Maker, but I'm not of the opinion that building a game with the software necessarily means it will be generic and I think good games can potentially be made with it. The results depend on the creativity of those making the game, just because the creators don't have vast programming knowledge or a lot of experience with more powerful game-building engines doesn't mean that they don't have skills in other areas that are vital to making a good game.

    The portrait art takes away so much. But, at least it's not one of those pr0n RPGmaker games that seem to be popping up everywhere. I like how the game doesn't shy away from the WW2 backdrop we see in a lot of these games. Great nations soon after a massive war, one of them breaks away to take over. Rise of the THIRD power. Power = Empire = Reich. I also like the trend (at least in this and Crystal Project) towards the FF10 combat style. Messing with turn order and having debuffs that actually work is great.
