Out of Shape, Middle Aged dude just waking up to magic?
Now there's an interesting change of pace, I like that.
I hope one day you do a top ten worst to best list for all of these indie RPGs that keep coming out.
Looks really neat! I'm getting strong Dragon Quest IV vibes here.
Love the Mystic Quest influence with enemies in combat. Such good memories with that little game!
2023 is a great year for JRPGs!
Glad you brought light to a new and upcoming JRPG David, FF6 is my favorite game of all time so to see a new game being inspired by it is exactly what I was looking for.
Seriously, the SaGa series doesn't get enough credit for basically popularizing the concept of non-linear storylines in RPGs. No jab against Chrono Trigger or FF6, but they get too much credit.
Nice review! Glad that you are opening up to more indie games! Ara fell really pushed me into them a couple years back and I've loved the other ones I've played like chained Echoes and the demo for sea of stars. They offer really great experiences and I hope to see more on your channel! Until next time! 😊
Shadow of Adam was a solid game. I will be on the lookout fir this one. Thanks David!
thanks a ton for bringing this game to my attention! Looks absolutely amazing!
Hope you enjoy it!
This is looking like a GOTY contender. It has everything I love in a good RPG. Thanks for covering the game David
Thanks for telling us about these new games. I never would have known about this if it were not for you.
This one looks really cool! The structure actually reminds me the most of Dragon Quest IV, where each character gets their own quest, and when they come together, the adventure starts for real.
Another big influence was how the beginning of Wild Arms 3 played out!
@@TylerMire oooo, yeah, that's a good one!
It is great to see Quartet being reviewed. I loved the demo and I am excited for its full release!
Looks awesome!! I'm really enjoying the recent resurgence of multiple character stories in one game. I need to try out Shadows of Adam asap and support these devs!
Sounds really interesting. Thanks! I like the idea of getting some backstory on the characters and then meeting up for the bulk of the quest, instead of just at the end like Octopath seems to be.
There's an overarching narrative in Octopath but it's hidden as a bonus type of deal rather than up front. You read notes or find strange clues or pieces of the plot that doesn't feel fully resolved and I think that's to keep the main cast individual stories center stage rather than the save the world thing. To get to the big evil of the game; you have to complete 2 separate side quests before the final dungeon opens up. I like that style just because it feels like a hidden treat for accomplishing what you assume is side filler but I see why others wouldn't. Added character interactions like they have in 2 so far has been rewarding but it probably follows the same path. I haven't beaten it but there's rumors of an end times and a fierce diety bent on destroying humanity.
I cannot wait to sink my teeth into another Something Classic RPG! Shadows of Adam grabbed me with a genuinely retro approach and I have faith that Quartet will also be a lovely game
Oooh Switch release? Sold! Take my money.
So excited!! Thank you for this, david.
Great find! Guaranteed purchase for me. As always: Thank you, David!
My pleasure!
Looks great! The indie scene for sure just keeps getting better 🙂
Looks great!
I love that the devs took influence from the few good things about Mystic Quest. Evolving enemy sprites, great music, and a sense of humor.
This looks beautiful! Definitely going to wishlist it! Thanks David 🥰🥰
Added to the steam wishlist, thanks!
Thanks for this David, the game looks great and I probably wouldn’t have heard of it without your review. Once it’s on switch I’ll definitely download it
David always with the bangers.
man i love this channel i love those rpgs and david is the best u deserve more followers man
I personally enjoy the indie scene. While not always able to iron games to perfection (which few companies do anyways nowadays), some do add unique mechanics or old ideas inspired from previous works that are rarely used (Mystic Quest changing enemy sprites, the Mario RPG control pad battle menu, combo skills like in Chrono Trigger, etc). Plus there's sort of a wild west type of rough charm in an Indie game and freedom in their creation compared to corporate studios. Infernax for example takes old school inspiration but also threw in for fun a contra mode where you and your co-op buddy have machine guns and fire contra style bullets. Stuff is great. The mod scene is also pretty cool as well. Plus we also got Bloodborne Kart coming thanks to the indie scene.
Looks like a really good throwback! I enjoy learning about these games from you. Also: nice choice to have Marc Papeghin's FF6 medley in the background.
Was already planning to get this but you just got me even more hyped for it! It looks wonderful.
I'm about the same age as you and getting used to the indie scene did challenge the idea that only AAA companies could make good games. Wasn't until Minecraft and Terraria that I learned that good ideas and strong focus didn't require a AAA studio to deliver instant classics.
This is soooo up my alley, definitely wish listing this and can't wait to try the full game.
Looks dope, of course I put this on my wishlist. Didn't know anything about Shadows of Adam, I went ahead and added that as well!
You’re in for a treat! Shadow is AMAZING!! It has the AP battle system that this one will also have.
Oh Man, I probably already said it, but Tons of great looking indie rpgs are coming out or already came out this year, what a great time to be a rpg fan
Looks good, been on my wishlist for a lil while now 👍
Ooo this one is looking very nice giving off that nostalgia feeling most likely gonna check it out
Shadow of Adam was AWESOME!!!! I’m definitely buying this just on the amazing experience I had with SoA!
See, we're getting closer to David's Law being a thing and everyone has to send you a beta so they can make their game as good as possible |-)
I’m a fan of this new law :)
Oh man, this looks so good. It nails the SNES vibe, and even seems to show elements of other non-Square SNES RPGs like Earthbound.
I'm so glad that it's releasing in December, because I really want to play it as soon as it's out without being bogged down by my backlog.
Looks like an excellent grab for $20!
This looks awesome. I just added it to my Steam wish list.
Thanks for the heads up David, have a great day!
You're the reason I played chained echoes! I'm playing Lufia 2 because of watching your videos too! so I'm hyped for other suggestions!
All Good choices!
really great video that shows the game potential for sure, I love that they gave a special treatment on the character animations, so even if the enemies are static it still gives that feeling of it being "alive", smart choices for sure. Also like more modern pixel games they use a big color palette that doesn't screen just nostalgia, loved the HUD too. Thanks for the video, David
Where did the music in the background come from? There were some really cool FF variations
The intro bit sounds very Wild ARMs 1 -3. Where you play the 3 characters in whatever order and then they all meet up.
That’s a big influence for sure!
It looks super interesting! I'll be waiting for a physical switch version but I'm cautiously optimistic about it!
Lovely as always, David: thank you. Had our eye on this one for a while and delighted to see it's bubbling along nicely.
Btw, what was the FF6 arrangement playing, please? Thought we'd heard them all, but that one's not familiar. Sounds great!
Thanks again.
dang I don’t know how I missed the Kickstarter for this
Physical please! SOA has/had one. Great video, thank you sir!
Ff6 like, it's getting bought
An adult rpg..... FINALLY!!!
GOD I HATE PLAYING AS OVERLY OPTIMISTIC TEENAGERS WHO HAVE NO IDEA HOW THE REAL WORLD WORKS!!!
AND SCREW THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP FOR REAL THO!
Ben’s an underemployed 30 something who just needs to pay rent. I’d call that relatable
@@TylerMire he's basically preaching tplo the player 'we the same brother' and i love it
Ben is 34, Nikolai is 27, and Cordelia is 26. Alexandra is 19 but she's the youngest.
I backed this game.
Sounds good.
I'm a fan of your work and hope u keep the great work up, but I would appreciate, if you could put the Link in your description for the masterpiece of Medley you used in your video (I'm also a big fan of Marc Papeghin, producer of this medley)
btw greetings from Germany
XD One of the characters is a fricken hippo! That is adorable amd hilarious!
Juna :)
Saying that there’s nothing good in the indie game scene is like being one of those people whom say “today’s music sucks” even though their knowledge of the scene is radio deep.
You just need to know where to look.
ddespite my issues with shaows of addam's writeing as a whole this team knows how to capture the feeling of snes era final fantasy.
the fact they got Pat Holleman to do the writieng who wrote bookks about the structure of ct and ff6 means the story might be in goodd handds.
looks good!
I just noticed your last name is Vincent... Do you know who Morbid Angel is by chance?
I like the concept, but I'm worried about the script. I'm not really into "goofy" and modern RPG scripts, I like the loosely translated ones for some reason.
Of the four character chapters, Ben’s is the only one that is goofy really. Each one has a very different tone. I think it may surprise you :)
I need to get a steam account.....
I don't think you know what the commodore 64 graphic looked liked to make this comparison. I owned one and it looked like shyt.
It's kind of like Dragon Quest 4
Another influence was Wild Arms 3 in the way it opens with the four character chapters!
I don't think this one is for me. I don't really like goofy RPGs, and if this game has constant "antics", then I think I'm gonna pass on it.
Mostly contained to Ben’s chapter. Cordelia and Nikolai’s chapters are very even handed and the plot at large is played very seriously
I don't remember FF6 looking like a unity store asset flip.
Your title definitely piqued my interest and now seeing it, I'm definitely gonna pick this up.
