I'm still amazed by the DK64 runners (years after release) discovering an extra banana coin hidden in some hedges, changing the 100% speedrun and effectively nullifying all current runs in the category.
The scary part is: Is this really a 100 percent speedrun now, or is there some other mysterious coin hidden somewhere else...?
Any good videos on this one?
Kinda like finding extra idols we weren't supposed to be able to pickup in pitfall the lost expedition. Saved over 25m in 100%
And it was a rainbow coin, so any collectibles for a single long speed runs were also nullified (though they're niche )
@@ManillaHeep dunno about a video I could point you to, but a quick explanation is that the coin in question is hidden under a patch of dirt that you need to specifically interact with, so you wouldn't blindly and accidentally pick up the coin by just walking past it. There's many coins like this in the game.
What makes this one special is that the patch of dirt is under a flower hedge that you can walk through, and being a N64 game, the hedge is completely opaque, so you can't possibly see the patch of dirt underneath.
I forgot how it was found specifically, if you find a video on it you can probably get the answer, but I think (and don't quote me on that) it was someone messing around and looking at the game's models
You have absolutely made my day! I finally feel vindicated for running into this glitch as a kid. I distinctly remember ending up with a Croissant equipped in Peaceful Rest Valley but I was never able to reproduce it. Years later I eventually just wrote it off as a one-off glitch specific to my console or cartridge. Turns out I likely forgot to equip the Travel Charm until I was in combat, teddy bear got destroyed, then it equipped the recently looted Croissant instead!
I just had a funny thought. Jeff is standing in battle against the star man. He has the bottle of dx water in one hand intending to pass it to poo and in the other hand his hat. Star man slaps the hat out of his hand and in a panic he puts the water on his head instead
Lol, I just visualized that whole scenario. I wish they had made an anime/series for the Mother 2/Earthbound world.
if this is really the level of humor that this game and its community have then im kinda glad i never gave it a chance lmfao chriiist this is hard to read without wincing
@@spimbles For fuck's sake, lighten up a little.
@@spimbles You know, I tried to think of a witty comeback to that, but to be honest what you said made you sound like such a boring person that all I could really do was roll my eyes. How does one even begin to make some backhanded comment on your sense of humor or social life? How does one insult that which does not exist? Congratulations, youtube commenter. You beat me.
@@spimbles 🤓
This video is awesome! I'm glad my Exit Mouse goof helped at least one category! My favorite interaction from this will always be the Magic Truffle being Poo's ultimate weapon.
(9:52) Heh, "Stay hydrated, folks." takes on a whole new meaning after showing how this glitch can be used to equip a water bottle, among other things.
The glitches weren't unearthed until recently?
You mean... they had remained earthbound?

nice
The editing on this is INCREDIBLY nice. Really visually appealing and I love the informative notes. I just found your channel through this and I need to catch up and check out your other videos now! Great work!
just finished the video and really really. the editing is like, holy cow good. this editing is SUPER nice. I really hope your videos break through more since I was shocked at the level of effort - or at least how incredibly pleasant the visual flair is
I'm really surprised that this glitch wasn't found earlier. The condiment glitch was very well-known, and yet people didn't seem to really dive into exactly how it worked and/or what other possibilities there might be to abuse the poor tracking of items being used in battle.
especially considering how it interacts with teddy bears im very surprised it wasn't something accidentally found back when the game was new. then again, i don't think i've ever casually changed equips in battle in the first place, so maybe thats why
@@Namingway248 To put it into perspective how rarely people bothered with changing equipment in battle, there's a glaring typo the play testers never caught where if you try to equip someone else's weapon, it'll say you used your "revious" weapon instead.
@@sfc0450Its only actual use as a mechanic is when you're using the Casey Bat to farm instawins. You don't want it in an actual fight.
@@KopperNeoman Yeah, it could also be good for changing body equipment if you needed to change your resistances, but there's not really a moment in the base game where it's that useful. The Halloween Hack's final boss does a good job of taking advantage of the mechanic, though.
When you went over how the glitch worked, my mind jumped to the crows in Mother 1 being able to steal from you on the same turn you went to use an item ... leading to disaster such as eating a canary. I've got half a mind to mess with the Switch port and see if I can get those crows to "pseudo-sketch glitch" gear onto me...
someone would find the mother 1 glitch scramble.
This reminds of a somewhat recently discovered glitch used to save a few minutes off of Metal Gear Solid, discovered completely on accident BY A CASUAL STREAMER. Of all the glitch hunters and speedrunners to find this useful glitch, it was instead someone doing their first ever playthrough of the game. I think it was even named after them.
Boba skip!
Love it when run changing glitches are found by accident
Pokemon Sinnoh Lake Theme my beloved
I love the editing in this, like when you used the flowchart line to outline the photographer sprite. I'd love to try speedrunning again, I just don't have enough time though, with everything else like work and working on my programming portfolio.
My friend hated Earthbound so much, he gave it to me. This was around 1997 or 1998.
It's so good and he should have kept it because it's worth so much now 😂
not only were you incredibly clear on the topic that even an ignoramous like me was able to understand, the editing on this video was just magnificant and really dramatically improved from other videos. really enjoyed watching it.
I really appreciate your focus on rpg speedruns. They're so unique and have a lot of interesting wrinkles that other genre's speedruns don't necessarily have
I did the stairs glitch by accident in my first run of Earthbound on WiiVC.
...but since it was my first run and I hadn't saved manually in a while, I reloaded my save state. T_T
and imagine all those bugs that were found but the unsuspecting player didn't care/recognised it. Like when I was little, I found the wrong wrap in level 8-4 of SMB and thought it was the correct way to finish the level (that it was a "puzzle" asking you to go back)
I know that feeling my friend. In Zelda A Link to the Past, I remember finding the "Chris Hullahan" room by accident and didn't think anything of it, it's just a room with blue rupees after all (and a message on the wall but that's common in ALTTP). I guarantee several other players found it too and it took years for people to take it seriously and find out what it actually was.
Edit: for spelling errors
5:22 Item 5 of list inventory was deleted and slot 6 (intended item to equip) waited for it's turn, but item 5 was the teddy bear (killed by a full-party damaging attack), so when item 6 went to slot 5, new item 6 was used, which was previously the holmes hat.
I wish I was good at finding USEFUL glitches in games. Instead it's usually just things like 'get your character stuck halfway in the ground and softlock' or basically anything that ends with '...and softlock.'
I just imagine Ness armed with three different bats in the same way Zoro from One apiece holds his swords
So basically someone found a way to actually equip fuzzy pickles instead of just saying it. That's just amazing though. That's why I love speedrunning. I love seeing games getting broken apart like that.
haven’t even finished the video but this editing is incredible! keep it up man:)
I find it strange how none ever thought to do this considering wrong index item usage is so common in old rpgs.
As soon as I saw where the teddy bear was, and the glitch in action, it clicked instantly. This is big.
This is insane and I am going to try to recreate this. Thanks for posting!
fantastic music choice and super well edited video!!! you're gonna boom on youtube soon!
The glitch Earthbound makes me think of is the Skip Sandwich wall clip.
I really liked your transitions and motion graphics! Professional work.
I love your editing!
I once equipped the Broken spray can iirc, it caught me off guard. weird. And now that you say it, it happened at the same time that my teddy bear died so yeah, I encountered this bug before.
The editing improved so much! Great video :)
Hoo~ you even stepped higher in video editing.
Keep it up buddy, interesting topics and always better-than-before video, good job !
I watched this in bed the other night, really great video! Just leaving a comment for the algorithm ^-^ Keep up the amazing work!
Damn this editing is slick
I guess this was bound to be unearthed
These visuals are getting pretty fancy. Well done.
Finally, a use for the Casey Bat!
Thanks for making such a sweet video Doc. I've loved Earthbound and the speedruns for a long time. Until now I haven't been able to keep up with how everyone's doing. ♥️
i remember octopuscal from their mother 1 any% stuff, its cool seeing the same names pop up in the mother community a lot
This video got me interested in watching EarthBound speedruns
the quality of your videos is insane, you are really undervalued/underexposed
keep it up!
Just had to drop by the comments section to express my appreciation for the "unearthed" pun.
You've got some really great editing, very impressive
I knew that some items could give weird stats because I was messing around with cheats one time, but I never thought it would be possible to equip unintended items in normal gameplay. That's super cool!
Great video Doc!
Thanks Max!
Final Fantasy 6 JP/SNES: equips Drill on a character's head
Earthbound: Hold my bottle... on the "Other" slot
I have a save state with a glitched out debug menu when I close
It by spamming b or a I can somewhat consistently make it glitch out or close the glitched text and work normally
6:51. i didnt expect equiping bottle of deluxe water gives you 40+ speed stats, thats unexpected
You go bro. We all need you to start pushing the wr down soon!
Awesome editing!
Best editing yet well done.
8:08
Aye, any background LoD music is an automatic 10/10 edit
"Stay hydrated"??
But if I drink the Bottle of Deluxe Water, I won't be able to equip it...
production quality goes insane
hmm so Casey bat is one of the best armors in the game for Nes... nice.
A sub-2 in Photo%. Crazy times.
I just love your editing man. It's eye candy
This is my first time seeing a zoomed in Teddy Bear. It's been over 20 years and I always thought the white part was the eyes and the top was a big bow. What?? (What do you mean it's had a frowny face this whole time?)
How.... do you even see something like that?...
Then again, the designs of certain LinktothePast sprites always confused me as a kid...
Reminds me of how I can't stop seeing Pokey/Porky as a cyclops. I know it's his nose, but I can't unsee it!
@@sfc0450 his... his nose?
it'd be really weird if equipping a second bear to your other slot made you permanently immortal :p
One time when I tried to access the debug menu in Earthbound the Escargo Express came to when I don’t call them and the guy had an item for me it may have been called The Null Item but I’m unsure unfortunately I was two dollars short so I couldn’t get it
This video is so well edited, I cant. Give this guy more subs, he desevse it.
Glitches that open up a whole universe of glitch items are the coolest
when it's a speedrun, every creativeNess thing put on play works as long as it saves at least one frame of time
The Algorithm shoved me here, and I am thoroughly impressed by your editing. Astoundingly slick. Keep at it!
Who else has a sudden urge to equip the Suporma and go defeat Gigygas?
I think the better question is, why didn't we figure this out before? Without it being an accident. It's identical to using free bottle rockets.
Thank you
Thanks for the video. The spinning bike in Pokemon made me curious. If anyone may enlighten me please...
I forget the specific set up, but it has something to do with the spinning floor tiles found in Rocket Hideout beneath the game corner and also Giovanni's gym
@@itsClaptrap Oh that's clever! Thank you!
@@angeluzerrare8170 if you're interested in some of the glitches from the first games, I got a comedic video from a streamer showcasing some of the popular glitches if you're interested
czcams.com/video/2jcGmhWndLE/video.html
If you do the Exit Safari Zone Early/Glitch City glitch, and end your steps while spinning due to the tiles mentioned previously (jumping off ledges or spinning still counts down your steps), you'll always be spinning, even on the bike or jumping off a ledge.
@@accuratejaney8140 Oh thank you so much!!
I enjoyed this video.
no
Carl Wheezer Croissant % speedrun
Damn I wanna take out the cartridge just to try this
An EARTHBOUND video before my September 2022 birthday? AWESOME.
Can this glitch be used with bombs and bottle rockets? Using the bomb having the bear be destroyed and then using an unexpected item instead?
It does work!
Is there an explanation as for why equipping non-equipable items gives you certain stat increases and resistances?
The github link in the description shows what equip slots are assigned to what stats I believe
@@DoctorSwellman I think they want to know why the items give you stats at all, rather than why they give you specific ones.
Maaa!
MAAAAA!
NEW SWELLY DROPPED!
Earthbound is still alive!!!!
For me, it's the Skip Sandwich glitches
Fuzzy pickles = hey WTF?

Which was about the contents of a text box that appeared when my brother was trying to unlock debug mode in Onett.
Man the editing was *chefs kiss*
Juicy
What I don't get is why this glitch is only used in all photo runs. I've only really tried glitchless runs, and it's been a while since I even looked at any% of any flavor, but why would photo% need to (1) skip Rabbit's Foot and (2) have a use for an item that does the same thing as Rabbit's Foot, where a regular any% wouldn't. This isn't really well explained at all in the video, and I suspect it's fairly complex requiring you to know what the barriers are for each of the categories, but I'm hoping that maybe someone can provide a succinct summary of it. Is the Rabbit's Foot substitute just one of the many uses? It sounded like that was the only one that mattered.
Photo% wouldn't go to Lumine Hall at all because it can just OOB clip to Magicant instead of collecting every sanctuary, therefore it never goes anywhere near the Rabbit's Foot. It does, however, fight Starman DX because it's necessary for getting the Tenda Village photo. With glitched Any% being such a short and tightly optimized category, it's less likely a glitch like this would be useful, especially if it involves an extra fight.
@@swagar Thank you for that explanation.
I don't see a link to the item duplication glitch.
I had to link the game technical resources as the 1 site with the item duplication glitch info is currently down. I’ll link the page when it comes back up

You can speed run earthbound?
And now presenting the strongest armor in the game (but not really): a teddy bear! It's already taking the hits for you, and NOW you can wear it on your body slot to save you the trouble!
Stay thirsty, my friends.
And normally I'd just make my silly comment and move on, but you had to throw in a snippet of best girl Rydia getting an Ether, so you get a like too. I'm shallow like that.
You could say these glitches were Earth Bound.
Graph looks poggers
i cant see video my internet not work
"its a shame this bug wasnt more game breaking"
haha, i totally agree. Games have way more replay value when the variables share the same data slots because of hardware limitations, crazy bugs are a good thing so long as they dont come out of the woodwork too fast. Todays games are all overdeveloped in that regard, the lack of limitation has caused something that we love to be lost. We solved a problem, but that doesnt necessarily mean we made thinsg better
i find earthbound to get way too laggy way too quickly
