Most aquatic plants take ammonium (which is technically ammonia in water) rather than nitrites and nitrates. Though some aquatic plants prefer nitrates, although a few. Terrestrial plants prefer nitrates. However, ammonia is toxic to most plants when high anyway.

I wanted to make an aquarium a while back and my mom just told me to use a fishbowl we've had for 10+ years plus for a better fish cause it's enough. It's not the tiny ones you usually find in the videos. She told me that her friends have fish in those small solitary tanks and do fine. Told her that's exactly what dad did and he killed 2 fish in a month. Just today, I finally built my first tank at 54 L. Planning to put in tetras but maybe I'll put something else that are smaller so I can fit more for longer.
Thank God I haven't put any fish in cause I probably fucked up not washing my substrate and have the water murky af. Mistakes were made but I gotta start somewhere

Plants can use all 3 parts of the nitrogen cycle for food (NH3,NO2,NO3), it takes the least amount of work/energy for plants to use up ammonia. That’s why in some high tech tanks where the pH is low people will use urea based fertilizer like Nilocg thrive+

  • @Mad_Props
    @Mad_Props Před 3 lety

Aquatic Plants use ammonium and nitrates.
There are a couple of studies that have been done that show that at different PH and concentrations plants will absorb different compounds to get the nitrogen they need to grow.
Some suggest that at lower PH more ammonium is absorbed whereas at a higher PH nitrification more readily occurs and so plants absorb more nitrates.
Also ammonium absorption seems to be light and temperature dependent.
This includes constructing wetlands to absorb waste water effluents, and studies on Azolla, Hyacinth, and Water Lettuce.

Btw Chris, plants prefer ammonia/ammonium over nitrite or nitrate. If I am not mistaken, plants need to convert nitrate back into ammonia before utilizing it. Some high tech tanks dose ammonium (less toxic form of ammonia) as their nitrogen source. This only works as long as the pH is under 7 and/or the plants utilize the ammonium fast enough.

5:04 even silk artificial plants a lot of times have plastic stems with tiny little jagged pieces that your betta's fins WILL find somehow. at least that's how my first betta was (before i faced my fear of real plants). I'd even worry about certain hardscapes when you have bettas with long flowing fins.
best to just try out a few kinds of plants, find one or two kinds that thrives in your aquarium and then buy a bunch of those. no need to do a fancy scape or pay 100s of dollars on plants and accessories, but a few natural plants go a LONG way.

I’m like 90% sure that tank at the 7-7:30 minute mark is a 125g, not a 30-40 gallon.

I'm currently in med school so I'm not planning to have fish, or any kind of animal anytime soon because I'm not sure I could take care of them well enough, but your channel made me want to have a planted tank, no fish, just plants, because I already have a lot of plants and it could be a nice addition

With that first goldfish. If you look, that was the gravel from the original tank. The person just cleaned it up and spruced up the tank, thankfully.

Do you ever plan on talking about those dinky little test strips api sells? I used to use them until a much more experienced fish keeper told me that they aren't very accurate and are tricky to store. Now I use the API master and GH&KH kit (the solution kind). I feel like a real sciencer 😎

stocking advice? I have a 10 gallon planted tank, and I'm leaning away from just getting a single betta fish. I was thinking about doing 6 pygmy corydoras, a honey gourami, and maybe a kuhli loach...would this be overstocked? I promise to do more research than just youtube comments, but if any one has any advice I would certainly appreciate it :)

My 55 gallon tank gets like 2 inches, maybe 1 and a half of water evaporated and I instantly need to fill it back up with some new water. Idk how people can stare at their fish tank everyday, see how low the water is, and they can honestly think "Yeah, that's probably fine."

10:10 reminds me of the 5 gal my dad got @ goodwill that was cracked, and "came all included" with a hood that was a reptile light, out of date fish food, and the receipt that was 11 years old for 35$. I felt bad having to tell him it wasn't really a deal, but I'm still going to plant it for him when we ever get anywhere to even put it because I have TOO much Java fern for my own good

The plants actually like the straight ammonia better than nitrate, although they consume both. However the ammonia is not so good for your fish. In a plant only tank tho a viable option.

I had to rescue 35 feeder goldfish from being left for dead at my summer camp last year :(
There were originally like 80, but they were kept in a bucket all camp and most died... the people thought it was funny and they were used as a joke...
I took the remaining survivors home on a long drive and kept them in my 30 gal until I could find all of them homes. I had to clean that tank a lot to keep it clean...
