My Hawk is ATTACKING Me! 😖| Correcting Poor Behavior After Molt

  • Its is expected for birds training to regress during and after the molt. It is sometimes considered more difficult to train your bird after the molt for many reasons. In this episode I spend some time trying to correct some poor behaviors she has recently picked up.

A couple tips I have learned in the few years in the hobby. The beak is normally trimmed by feeding on items with bones like legs that they don't swallow whole, but have to pick at. You can also feed frozen meat that will take some work to eat. To combat food association the bird needs to learn not necessarily that the meal comes from your fist, but rather they have a meal when they are around you. When the bird is like Carol in the molt I will have a short creance, carry them on the fist to several pre-placed chunks of meat in the yard that they have to be looking for. You can also vary it by occasionally throwing some meat that they have to chase.

@@pfd_mark_taylor This guy is no falconer, and is far away from being anything close to being "great". He posses a bird of prey to gain attention and subscribers. I have yet to see this guy, or his bird, catch any game. Falconry is defined as hunting game in its natural habitat by means of a trained raptor. After an entire year, this guy has yet to be defined as a falconer. Maxx is an apprentice, I am shocked his sponsor is allowing him to post all aspects of falconry EXCEPT the most important aspect. Hunting, catching and killing game. I would never allow my apprentice to do this, because of his lack of experience. My birds hunt, catch and kill game daily.

Hawks and owls have a habit of always wanting to be at the high point of the glove. Try holding your glove hand at a slightly upward angle. Carol will tend to move up towards the wrist/hand. If you hold at an even or downward angle she'll climb upwards and towards your forearm and talon you like she did. Even if you want her in a more comfortable position for you if you have her on the glove for a long period you can move your arm angle up or down to get her to a more convenient location on the glove. I used to do educational seminars and after a while your arm can get fatigued. Im sure you know all this but just in case ya didnt. :)

Awesome video Max, my dad is a falconer and I’m about to take the test. One time, when having Gryf (dads red tail) flying to the fist for a tidbit, he didn’t secure the jesses upon her landing on his glove, it was about a nano second later that she bated right toward his face. He turned and luckily got a talon footed on his shoulder. But to this day, if I see a hawk on a fist without the jesses secured, it just makes me cringe man! So he now just brings her swivel with jesses and leash, around back of the fist and through the pinky and ring finger - that way it’s out of her way when eating, but still secured. Just a thought my man, you are of course a good piece further along with this lifestyle than I am. Please keep posting bro, always super informative.

You see similar beaviour with crows etc when they sit on powerlines you can see them sweeping their beaks over the wire or cable. Check out birdtricks on CZcams. But that’s with parrots I don’t know anything about hawks im not sure if it’s the same concept. A wild hawk copes it’s beak by cleaning her catches, scraping the meat off bones with their beak, and that helps grind It down. We as Falconers tend feed them smaller chunks, or sometimes meat without bone, so they don’t grind the beak down that way ..I as wondering what Carols flight weight is.. just trapped a new Red tail that’s flying at 1345 grams...

Agreed , ask your sponsor to teach you how to cope (trim) to solve that issue :)

For sure. I talked with my sponsor. Hes in Fubi till the end of the month unfourtunetly. He breeds and sells peregrines to the guys over there. He asked that I just clip the tip off for now and we will cope when he gets back

fly her on beef during training and cut into tiny pieces, like roughly 2 grams of beef. Save the chicks for when shes doing a longer flight for the first time or for her last flight of the day. You also shouldn't train her to jump off the glove by putting your hand down, you should opt for a throwing motion as it gives her a boost for flying and makes hunting way easier. Always make the food visible as they are then less likely to fly to your glove when there is no food on it.

A training video a week of her just flying and bonding would be just fine by me.
