Collecting ROADKILL for Hawk Food đŸ€ą

  • This vlog channel has a diverse audience. I want to stress that I understand not everyone wants to see a deer pulled apart or butchered for food. So, if you dont like it DONT WATCH. In this episode I make use of a crappy situation after hitting a deer while driving a fire truck at work. I decided rather than leave the deer to rod on the side of the road that i would do my best to harvest the animal for food to feed my pet hawk named Carol. Carol is a Red Tailed Hawk trained in the art of Falconry and as a predatory species she is specially adapted to eating meat that would be unfit for human consumption. This was my first time gutting or skinning a deer so that process was quite long and difficult but i found it to be educational and feel that i did the right thing.

Awesome Job for your first time! I wouldn’t use road kill for human consumption that has been out that long, but for what you need it for that’s a great use. I know here in MN, if it’s fresh the DNR will give it to the driver that hit it or even sometimes bring it to a processor and have it processed for the local food shelf. Otherwise, mystery road kill if not overly bad they will pick them up and bring them to local zoos or wildlife rehabilitation centers to use. Love the videos and keep up the great work!

For your first time with no onsite guidance you did fine; it’s a big step going from a video-watch to “hands-on”. Good job how you handled it with your son. Properly handled, youngsters are much more resilient and understanding than we give them credit. Your son’s new found understanding and savvy regarding life’s lessons will put him “ahead” of his more protected/clueless cohorts. Cool that your wife didn’t freak out about the whole life-lesson aspect; overall I’ve observed she is pretty strong mentally..

You did a damn good job for your first time. Thank you for not letting it go to waste - Carol will love it! After that long, don’t eat it. Back when I was in a college fraternity and we hit a doe during deer season. One of the fraternity brothers used a doe tag and we brought it back to the fraternity house, gutted, butchered, and fed all the brothers that night. Ours was a fresh kill, so it was still good - and we didn’t eat the bloodied and bruised meat, so we fed it to the dog. Love the channel and keep it up!

On a very sarcastic note, you should've let Carol do the butchery! To watch her just go at it like she would in the wild would be pretty cool to observe.
Incredibly respectful that you didn't waste anything. As a chef, I've always wanted to experience hunting to have a better appreciation. I'm still trying to get the right connections to experience that.
As for the butchery, I've never cleaned a deer. In school15 years ago we did butchery but most restaurants just order the whole prime cut and fabricate it to the individual portion. Not bad your first time, just like cutting a chicken, you cut it into the natural muscle groups. I wouldn't eat it tho....too long out in the sun.
Love that you're sharing this journey with Carol with us!

I’ve collected (fresh) roadkill and ate it no problem. After 30+ hours I wouldn’t eat it. I think you’d be less queasy if it was fresh and not all bruised up and battered. The insides of any animal stink- but they definitely stink more after 1.5 days. Great job for your first time. One tip- if you’re not worried about the hide tearing- after you hang it cut off the hoofs and then tie a rope around the hide wrapped around a baseball. Attach the other end of the rope to your truck and put in drive. You’ll pull the hide right off. Plenty of CZcams tutorials on this.

Would have not eaten the deer meat in those conditions, but for Carol excellent. We have RT's and Eagles on Road kills all the time. I have maybe skined 10 white tails over the years. You did pretty good for a newbie, couple things in skinning I would have made different cuts but for a RK, you did fine. Good video and should also make some coyotes happy! (PS: video of Brit night shooting was vibrating!)

What i would do is just cut the back straps and major leg muscles off from the backside. That way you dont have to mess with the guts and you get the best meat for Carol with very little mess. Probably around 20-25lbs. More then enough to feed a little bird for a long time (until you find another fresh roadkill deer

All was delicious, legal, safe and was part of the circle of life. BTW wild turkey is 10x more flavorful than farm birds.

Hey man, I love what you do and how you make us feel! I just have one suggestion; I have watched you and continue to keep watching you for a multitude of different reasons; side by side vids, Tacoma build vids, parametor vids, your new house vids, carol (falconry) vids, plain old good vibes vids, and the list goes on. I can only offer one piece of healthy constructive criticism: Just make sure to let people know at the end of your videos that you have such a diverse channel. I know that sometimes you make sure to add a comment at the end of your videos that says that you often make some “too random” uploads and that some people who clicked on this particular video may not know that you have other video topics. I suggest that you create a standard speech outro that says something like “make sure you get some work done this week, but don’t forget to live. If you’re interested in power sports, falconry, home improvement, Toyota Tacomas, or more, then make sure to subscribe, press the bell, and look out for the next video. Can’t wait to see you all next time.” Just a random suggestion!!
Thank you for the inspiration my friend, and thank you for all you do! I have heard you notice a few times on separate videos that you would have expected your channel to grow a bit faster than it has been growing. So, as a social media consultant from Boise, Idaho, who really enjoys your content, I figured I would offer some professional advice! Keep posting!!😊

I couldn't stop laughing with all the release of gasses. I, as a hunter, ALWAYS keep latex gloves in my pack. I'm sure there are a number of hunters that feel that are so manly because they don't use them and get blood all over their vehicle that they need to clean up later. I will always keep them in my pack to use. You ABSOLUTELY are doing a responsible thing. Birds of prey have guts of iron, they will eat on carcases for as long as it is still there. I have seen a red tail fly up from a dead deer that had been sitting for a week.....in summer. So don't worry about it hurting carroll. If the deer was just a couple hours from being hit.....maybe I would process for consumption.......but not 48 hrs. to high of a risk for meek human stomachs.

Great job, shame it sat for so long so you couldn't save more of the organs.
You could also raise quail, they're super cheap and excess males would make great feed for Carol!

I think you did the right thing. Making good use of that roadkill was admirable! Good job, dude.

Good job man! I think you did the right thing. Like you said, if you have the opportunity why not take it instead of letting the animal go to waste.

Maxx love the channel, you did the right thing and not creepy at all. Good use came out of an unfortunate situation, good job on your first butcher job! Keep the content coming and hope you get the Can Am going or get the new Polaris XP Pro!

You are a serious comedian. I have never laughed so much. I love the NW you are just awesome. I really loved this. Most impressive. Taught all my daughter's how to skin then cape the head. They all thought it was gross.

I personally wouldnt eat it after it sitting for that long but you definitely did the right thing by salvaging it. I would do the same thing and not let it go to waste.

i hunt pigeons to feed my 4 carnivorous ferrets, i used to feel squimish but yea it gets easier, and ive collected roadkill for them, rabbit ect. make sure to deworm your pets often if feeding wild prey.
    peace and love, liked.

You did the right thing in not letting it go to waste, it’s been sitting out too long you should not eat it! And you should get a gut hook it will make it a lot easier to gut.
You didn’t do bad for your first time skinning a deer.đŸ‘đŸŒ
