Into the Wild School Bus?!? Saved from the scrap pile! 1956 Ford

- Check out this 1956 Ford short bus that I just saved from the scrap! This school bus was originally from the Kidder, SD Independent School District, which has long since been defunct and Kidder is basically a ghost town. The bus was then converted into a camper and used for elk hunting trips to Colorado well into the 1980s. It still has the original Y-block engine and 4 speed manual transmission. I went to look at some other items on an estate sale and this bus was there with some other vehicles that were likely going to be scrapped. So I saved what I could.

I want to see this one running. That's a badass little bus!
I wish I didn't have 397 other projects! Thanks for watching!

@@moneygrip4464 Good point!
Wow! 39 years ago I drove one same year from Boise Idaho to Yreka California non stop. 18 years old. What a learning curve!
Did ya stop in Weed?
@@OSUCharger no but I smoked a lot 😁
Man youtube is suggesting all these old videos. Awesome.
Heck ya
The short bus. How appropriate!! :)
That was a fresh water fill point in the beginning.
Right rear.
Man, that's some pretty country. Perfect day for digging up old hoopties.
How in the heck did I miss watching this one? As the "proud" owner of a '57 GMC from Willow Lake School District ND I can only say ... save the bus!
That's awesome!
I love ❤️ the classic style of that old bus; minty 👍
They don't make em like they used to! Thanks for watching!
Now that's a nice bus.
I like it
The port on the drinker side rear is for filling the on-board water tank. "NO YELLING ON THE BUS!"
love to see you do some more fun stuff with this bus
Perfect little ole hippy bus. My daughter would love that thing! She's be gone forever traveling the globe with that baby. The Patina has cured just right.
Well saved, there can't be many left!
I wish I knew just how many they built with this wheelbase! Thanks for watching Paul!
Damn this is a old schooly, 89 probably the first of it's time. They did it before it was cool with a real nice setup too, that back porch is miiiint
A ROLL OF TOILET PAPER FROM 1989! That got me haha
The finest!
I drove a school bus in Virginia when I was a senior in high school back when they let 17 year olds do those kind of things. 1958 A180 International. 5 speed unsynchronized transmission. Got good at double clutching. The law there at that time didn't allow self canceling turn signals on school buses. They all had the add on turn signal switches. Just a bit of useless info 🙂.
Good stuff!
Which body did it have - Carpenter, Wayne, Ward, Hackney Brothers, Blue Bird, Superior, Oneida, or Thomas?
@@bobbyheffley4955I don't remember. Either Wayne Carpenter or Thomas. That's about all anybody had around here at the time.
Super school bus ! Great find.
Yes it was!
That’s a cool little ford hot rod. Love to hear it running.
Be a good project someday when I don't have so much goin on!
This is going to be a fun project , wish we could find this in Florida
Thanks for watching! They're still out there! Just gotta go huntin!
Looking forward to this one!
It might be a while!
@@MortskeRepair Well get it together and in gear Maynard..
@@tonyfriend7413 Only so many hours in the day!!
That's a Carpenter body. I had one with a 64 Ford front end, a 45 passenger with a B750 and a later 460 engine. I restored it to look like the one I rode to high school. I miss it.
I had a 63 Chevy, 44 passenger (slightly larger but not full size) version of this camper conversion. It had a good paint job in silver and blue. Sometimes folks would ask to see the inside when we would camp, old folks mostly who started camping in something like this. After a couple of years, we moved on to something nicer. These chassis are pretty brutal. Springs, brakes, steering, transmission and rear gearing are all way stouter than it needs to be and it will whoop your azz on a longer trip. Feels like driving a steam train but it’s easy to work on and a lot of parts are still out there. Fun to look at but I wouldn’t want another one.
I agree! Camping has come a long ways! But folks used what they could get their hands on back in the day. Thanks for watching and sharing!
You got the King with the leaning tower of power now the Intimidator camper
I hope you get this one running and driving. It'd be a great cruiser.
This one is pretty low on the priority list unfortunately.
I was the only guy in 5th grade that was old enough to drive the school bus... I had that medical condition that causes you to see words and numbers backards. I think it’s called Distemper.
Probably shouldn't eat them paint chips anymore Wayne!
Short wheel base🚙👍great ratrod
Short bus's are the best!
Oh that other bus in the back!!! Yess
This yard was stacked with busses! Thanks for watching!
GET THIS THING RUNNING!!!!
She's sold
@@MortskeRepair Damn
Pretty cool little bus and it’s a Ford 👍
I used to ride to school on old buses like this in the mid 60s! The around 1970 we got nice CROWN buses that were flat in front. They felt like cadillacs compared to the old ones!!
But they didn't look nearly as cool!
Our 59 ford bus could barely crawl up gravel road hills when it was full of baby boomers.
@@randykroells8049 Up hill to school both ways right?
@@blakestone8088 I think that person taught me to drive!
I love it that is my mom dream to make I wish I would have found that you r so lucky on that one
Nice! I just picked up a 1949 Ford F5 shorty bus!
Short bus's are the best!
Flathead V8?
Been replaced with a 1957 312 Y-Block!
This bus was a Carpenter Premier bus. In about 1952, they tried to make a Vistaramic Premier without installing the "S" turn on the front part of the front door leaf. Since the engine was pushed forward, that would have been an option for the door on some of the first Vistaramics. I like the Premier models. I am so proud of you all for rescuing this gem. I wish Carpenter would have continued building the 1952 version of the Premier Vistaramic. Then schools could have picked their Vistaramic buses. With or without the "S" turn on the front leaf. I like this one. If it gets converted back into a regular bus with regular seats, I am sure it could be used for a small community shuttle bus or something.
Thanks for the info!
Love the old buses. They make badass hotrods. I seen one that Foose built for John Force .Also at the F100 Nationals in Pigeon Forge Tn. You should build it
Maybe someday!
I really want to see you get that cab over going
Keep an eye out. There will be content on it. Thanks for watching!

Hi I have a shortie in the UK, I also have the Steelcraft Bus ID Plate. Im trying to find out the weight of it, there is no weight stamped on the plate, any ideas please? I have a 1956 shortie Ford exactly what you have dug out
Sorry, I'm no help there.
More of the bus revival please Mortske
This one is long gone, sorry.
I know that you want to save and it probably can be. I think after the hotsy and some very hungry for their next jug they will swim in tubs of shit. I can see it fixed cause the metal on those was not a tin foil death trap like we ride in now. It would be almost insane. I think that the old paint would be one of the hardest challenges to remove. I am very interested in how you get from a to b on this lovely ride. Good luck
I'm not sure what will happen to this one but it was too neat to let it get by me. If I end up doing anything with it I might just leave the old paint as I kind of like the patina look to it. But who knows. Thanks for watching!
When he saw how the audio tape worked my dad said the new tech wasn't as handy as the record player with the centre pin in the middle of the turntable that allowed you to play lots of records dropping one at a time to play one after the other , which ment you could have hours of music playing. This bus is a bit like that 😳 it uses a luggage rack ! How many bikes could it take ? WHY ? Don't they still do this now ? If they don't do it now ? It's a bit anti bike init ? All the best from Scotland .
Are we gonna see a first start since 1989 on the Magic School Buss...or has it been sold lol 👏👍👏👍🇨🇦
sold
If you're not able to get it running maybe you could cosmetically restore it to how they had it when it was an actual School Bus and see if maybe a museum would take it
Is there a part two on this bus? I'd love to see this resurrected!
Nope
Oh yes
Goof off my buddy bought some Goo Be Gone to get that sticky stuff off a steering wheel. That stuff is great I renamed it the hooker mouth wash.
