Well, he're what I'd do with it: 1. trash the frame (no point trying to weld it up - way too far gone) 2. find a reasonable CJ frame and cut it down 3. reinstall the AMC six and TorqueFlight tranny (engine sounds strong, no rod knock) 4. put in electronic spark ignition 5. new/rebuilt carb. 6. new tires might be nice. The thing has definite 'cool factor' with the right-hand drive, 2 wheel drive and short wheelbase. I agree with the other comments about the sound of the straight six (versus the later 'Iron Duke' motors) The six is REALLY nice sounding. Oh, and Duff likes it, too...so you should do something with it...Taking that to 'Jeep' shows would be interesting - what with the FIVE slot grill and JEEP pressed right into the metal of the rear door...Great video...

New to your site. I also owned a mail jeep from the early 80's. I rebuilt from the ground up. New everything. Motor shop did my motor, new tires , exhaust, tranny, wiper motor, etc. Had it painted Kelly Green. I loved that Jeep. Racing a guy one night , he was a friend, my right rear tire blew out. We were going 80 . State Police said I flipped 3 times before ending up in a ravine. They counted my front bumper dig in. Cut to my forehead and my leg was pinned under the driver side door. The only thing that saved me was what my stock car driving Dad told me. When your about to wreck big , put your hands in your lap , close your eyes and relax. Love these Jeeps no matter who made them.

The PO had a large number of these DJs'.
Since you mentioned the Chevette, I'm assuming you may have been a mail carrier. I was a letter carrier for 31 years. For those who may have an interest, they leased a number of the yellow-painted GM Chevettes, and also bought many white-painted Ford Pintos (earlier ones were blue). They were all pretty much basic vehicles with little more than a heater. These vehicles were used primarily for "park-and-loop" delivery since they were common production left hand steering and would have been difficult for curb box delivery. They also bought a panel van in the 60s'-70s' called, simply, The half-ton.
Someone in the PO ranks had the foresight to purchase a design-specific delivery vehicle called the LLV. About 100,000 of the LLVs' (Long-Life Vehicles) were purchased, starting in the late 80s', for about $12,000 each They used a modified S-10 GM chassis and powertrain, and production ended about 1994. There were several thousand of a Ford version bought later to add to the fleet. As has been typical of the PO, these vehicles had few creature comforts except for a heater; the LLV did, at least, have power steering. Of all the PO vehicles of the last few decades, and in my opinion, probably the LLV has been the best vehicle for the money since they're now in their third decade of use and has been largely dependable. A hundred or so have caught fire in recent years of the 100,000 bought.
The PO has submitted request for bids from several companies to replace the LLV; don't know the current status of that.
They, of course, have had a number of delivery vehicles prior to that period but I am not familiar with those since I was not a mail carrier during those times. And, there are a number of vehicles used for other purposes such as transport and collection.

Leaking gas can be dangerous in a small shop as it fills the air with flammable fumes .In a large shop with good ventilation the fumes spread out and are not as dangerous. A fire can still start from dripping gas.
One of the customers of Graveyard cars had this happen, his small cramped shop exploded when he walked in destroying a Hemi Cuda.
I think it would be a good idea if Mortske started dancing like Mark, he is awesome. The viewers would love it.
Mortske works much harder tha Mark, he actualy troubleshoots the cars, Mark just changes everything as long as he has a few sections with the VID. He does rebuild matching number engines and transmissions.

Straight 6's like that or the ford's 300 have a special place in my heart. I'd love to see some more of them on the channel where you hop one of them up with a bigger carb and show us the difference it makes on power. I know it's not gonna be anything too crazy, but I could definitely feel the difference when I did it to mine!

Mail Jeeps were retired when they reached only 5 million (stop and go) miles, so I don’t understand why this one would need so much work?

  • @IR-nq4qv
    @IR-nq4qv Před 3 lety +1

What should you do with it? If you have the title read on, if not, junk it.
All the glass and body panels including the floor are flat. No English wheel required to make and replace anything
Most of the critical body parts are made from aluminum or fiberglass. The rusted parts would be easy to copy and fabricate.
No interior or upholstery to worry about. Maybe add a radio and some carpet for Duff
The chassis is just straight forward rectangular tubing. Can be fully made in an afternoon.
I say build "The Duff Express Mobile" . I think many will agree. This would make the ultimate parts truck and it would be cheap on fuel.

When I strated work as a rural mail carrier in about 1995, I bought one of these used from the the post office. The jeeps were apparently sold when they got too expensive to work on. They didn't have spare tires because city carriers weren't allowed to change their own tires so I had to buy a tire and rim to have a spare. It was rated at 1/4 ton. It always rode like crap until one day, while delivering phone books, I actually had a 1/4 ton load and it felt very plush. Interestingly, the springs were set up for the jeep to lean to the left, so that when the right side wheels were off road, it would sit fairly level. Although the limited slip on mine was mostly worn out, it did fairly well on ice. I had to sell it when it would no longer meet polution inspection requirements.

I learned about this from "The interwebs". The old single barrel carbs on these jeeps could not handle the higher fuel pressure of the the electric fuel pumps. The higher pressure pushes fuel past the float needle and results in the flooding issue you ran into. I have found a fuel pressure regulator solves this issue. My jeep likes 5 pounds of pressure. I have heard if you run a Solex carb 2 pounds of fuel pressure is about right.

    • @MortskeRepair

I think your mail jeep needs company. In one of your junk yard crawls I saw three different jeeps. I think they were all 40s vintage Willys jeeps.
It would be a pretty cool series of videos to rescue each and bring them back to life. We could all learn a little more about these cool old machines. It would be a nice bonus if a vin check places one of the jeeps in war time service.

Reminds me of a AAA wrecker-driver back in the early '80's who came to change our tire, and I noticed he didn't have a spare tire for his tow-truck, and so I asked him, "What would you do if YOU got a blowout?", and he smilingly replied, "Cry!" :P
