Abandoned 1948 Studebaker sitting for 35 years! Will it run?!? Long forgotten flathead six!

  • I received this 1947 to 1949 Studebaker in trade from a friend of mine. Story has it that a local Studebaker dealer owner was in the process of restoring the car. The family let the car go and then it was passed around a few times before I got the pleasure of owning it. The flathead six cylinder engine was supposedly just recently rebuilt. You can tell they were starting to do "bodywork" and had removed most of the trim. It's got a 3 speed overdrive manual transmission and rear suicide doors. Other than that, I don't know much about it. So stay around a while. And lets see if we can get this thing running!

    I am a baby boomer born in 1951.In 1952 my pop bought a Studebaker Commander. It was ahead of its time . It had a great interior and a automatic transmission, V8 engine, even electric windshield wipers a rarity at the time we kept the car until 1961. I do not remember any problems. The reservoir for the brakes was under the drivers floorboard. I noticed the one on the champion. The automatic transmission reservoir as on thr hump in the front seat area. A great car. My first car was a 1950 Studebaker Champion. A 2 door. It was just a basic 2 door sedan with a automatic transmission. I drove it thru the 10 th grave before changing. I saw my old champion still running several years after I let it go. Love those old cars. As a fact my 2 door 1950 Champion had the familiar torpedo nose as well as the Commander.

  • @santiagorubio833

    This is a 1948 Champion. The dash says so for sure. Regarding the first speed, it is not that it is synchronized. In Stude with Over Drive, you can put first gear with the car moving forward. It is also possible to make changes without pressing the clutch, at a speed lower than the Over Drive connection. I know these cars well. My first car was a 1947 Commander, very well equipped for that time: radio, heating, over drive, hill holder, limmited slip differential, self-adjusting brakes, among other things.

In the UK they will sell you a light and part of a car framework call it a restoration project and charge you a fortune for it 🥴😳. Looking forward to the next installment cupcake. Gary.... As an old Studebaker fan...my first brand new car was a 1961 Studebaker Lark convertible. Your car would have a borg warner T-90 transmission with overdrive and a Dana 27 rear, usually 4.27 to 4.55 ratio. You actually have a collectable car there, more so than a grossly over-rated Chevy of the period. BTW, Studebaker made all of their car engines through the end of 1964. The castings all have a high chromium any molybdenum content, and the cranks, rods and cam are all forged. Overly strong, and long lasting. The old school solenoid switch on the starter is definitely somebody's idea of a quick fix. It should be on the fender apron. Remember 6 volt devices need twice the amps to do the same amount of work as 12 volts, so keep the battery and starter leads heavy!
    The starter motor doesn't care about polarity as far as rotation is concerned. I remember using 6 volt starters on 12 volt systems several times. Spun it over really well, and were cheaper used, at my local junk yard!

  • @brianandrews7099
    @brianandrews7099 Před 3 lety +26

    The Champion was the “value” line of Studebaker at that time. In other words, it was the cheapie! Those flat sixes were not fast but, as long as it still has good oil pressure, they are rock solid. With the Overdrive (OD knob on yer dash), they can manage some respectable gas mileage. You can get pretty much everything you need parts wise. If your used to air cooled VW or ‘65 Mustang part prices, the parts are crazy expensive! If your used to buying Rolls Royce parts, it will seem cheap! The body really doesn’t seem too bad to me. Everybody! Please don’t strip your car down to bare metal then throw it out in the weather to rust down for years!

    • @MortskeRepair
      @MortskeRepair  Před 3 lety +9

      She was the stripper model! That interior seemed pretty classy for a low end model. I've got a lot of GM stuff so these parts are like unobtanium compared to an SBC. It's unfortunate they sanded it down as it was likely a very respectable car at that point. Thanks for watching and commenting Brian!

    I have been playing with engines for years. When you look at the service manuals for Studebaker they are made to much tighter tolerances than most other makes. Very well engineered. You can carefully tap the sticking exhaust valves done through the spark plug holes without taking the head off.

A device that holds the brakes on when the clutch and brakes are pressed waiting at a light or stop sign on a hill so you don't roll back when starting on a hill with the brake released. Once u see the stuck valves, take ur favorite flavor spray with the red straw, and spray towards the stems. Go to the hardware store get a 3/16" brass rod. Roll motor over by hand, and use the rod to tap valves back down.
    Once you stick camera down the holes to see where the valves are at, it makes tapping them back down easy. I never had to lift a head using this method. That is of course dependant on lightning hole orientation.
