  • Amazon's Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power is finally here! And as many of us suspected, it's a fully fledged disaster. In this review, we look at Galadriel's transformation into warrior queen, and whether the negative reaction & backlash to the character and series as a whole is warranted.

    Galadriel as written by Tolkien:
    - sorceress;
    - politician;
    - head of state;
    - taught by the Maia Melian (same angelic race as Gandalf).
    That female elf was not strong enough for Amazon, so they demoted her to a boy who cried wolf... but one who can fight with a sword. Now that is a strong female character!

    Modern writers just don't know how to create a good, strong female character without essentially making her a man. That's all they can come up with. Want a strong female character, make her act like and behave like a man. And in fact, not just a man, but a superman. Galadriel as written by Tolkien was the pinnacle of strong feminine beauty, dignity, and grace. In this show, she's just a hammer looking for rocks to smash. No beauty, no charm, no grace, no real hint of femininity.

Its okay to start off a wrong path, and be humbled, yet these female characters are super humans and out fight, out climb full grown men.

    I would like to express my thoughts as someone who has read the fellowship three times, the two towers twice and return of the king once, watched peter's movies on repeat, and watched numerous lore videos about the Silmarillion and middle earth in general. This show's real problem is this, its trying to be too many things at once while inevitably being nothing at all, which makes it a mess. Its not trying to stay true to the lore, nor is it trying to tell its own story using original characters, its trying to rely on nostalgic characters without producing anything worthy of invoking nostalgia. A disappointing mess and very boring. People want the real Tolkien, not this. And honestly I would encourage people to pick up the books more often than watching these tv shows or even the movies, as good as Peters movies were, the books are 100x better. I read the books once and even read through the Simarilion, though I was confused half the time at who was who and what was going on over all but what amazed me despite that was the depth and care taken to writing the lore as if it was a real recording of the myths/history of middle earth as a real place. Peter Jackson put a lot of effort into trying to capture the age of middle earth at that time and not make it feel like a bunch of NPCs just spawned in because the characters wandered into a new area. It felt like the world existed outside of the scenes shown in the movies.

      I don’t know how so many supposed lore experts miss the fact that Tolkien said that hobbits have been around since the Elder Days. It’s right there in the prologue to the Fellowship of the Ring. You don’t even need to read any secondary writings to get it. Tolkien said that their deeds were not recorded by elves and that they didn’t DO much, but that’s not the same thing as not existing. If someone wanted to include hobbits (which would not have been called hobbits at this time but perhaps something like their clan name) then they could do that with no lore discrepancies as long as the hobbits stay hidden and don’t interact much with other races. Oh wait. That’s exactly what the show is doing.
      The way that they’ve included harfoots in the show actually demonstrates that the showrunners seem to understand the issue FAR better than the self professed nerds who complain “There were no hobbits in the 2nd age.”

    Galadriel is quite literally a representation of the Holy Mother, who prays for our sins.
    You know who told me this? JRR Fucking Tolkein!
    Go read the Tolkein Letters - #320 he states specifically: "“I think it is true that I owe much of this character to Christian and Catholic teaching and imagination about Mary” and he goes on to say that the critical essence of the character is her penitence and her role as an object of holy veneration - the mother who prays for us now and at the hour of our death, or to put it in more Tolkeinian terms, the comforter who comes to us "in the moments of greatest peril when all other lights go out.”
    In the second age, Galadriel declines the offer of forgiveness and a chance to return to Valinor, not because she wants to go search for Sauron, but because her deep sense of guilt (as well as a certain amount of pride) does not allow her to just forget about The Rebellion and go on with her life. Instead, she retreats to the deepest forests of Middle Earth to DO PENANCE ON BEHALF OF HER RACE (if you dont know what she is doing penance FOR, I recommend that you buy a little book called "The Silmarillion").
    Penance is the exact moral opposite of revenge. Tolkien - a devout Catholic - loathed the concept of revenge, and in his books he punished every character who was motivated by revenge. Anyone who understands Tolkien understands the moral foundation of his universe. A character as pure and as powerful as Galadriel could not possibly act on motivations of revenge. Not in Tolkiens universe.

    Of course Galadriel is the only elf who actually knows how to use a sword. Because she is so much better than everyone else.
    I totally agree with the comparison with House of the Dragon. I just don't care about any of the characters in Rings of Power. Anyone saying "give it a chance" is just shilling for Amazon at this point. We've all watched two full episodes out of 8 in this season. That's 25% of the season. From what I saw, all 2 hour episodes should be trimmed down to 20-30 minutes, it would have been much better. Basically nothing happens in the show. In 2 hours there was a terrible fight with troll and a meteor falling, which was mildly interesting. Rock breaking scene was meh at best. The rest is close up dialog with the worst writing I’ve heard in years. Basically nothing actors say is important to the story. They are just saying words. 10/10 best show ever. Stunning and brave

    Haven't read the books, but the first episode had me wanting to start re-watching the LOTR trilogy. Right from the get-go I was reminded of how much better Blanchett was than Clark at narrating.
    The elves were climbing like humans, lacking in agility. They obviously didn't have a proper fight choreographer and action director from the way Galadriel took down the snow troll. Would've come across a lot better if they all worked together like a well oiled machine to take down the snow troll, while Galadriel was commanding them to show that they're an elite unit.
    And they were lacking the flair and otherworldliness or majestic aspect they had in the LOTR trilogy, not to mention the short hair on the male elves.
    Choosing the route of the veteran warrior who's still at war was a misfire, not just bcos of the lore contradictions that everyone's talking about, but bcos we've seen that one done so many times before and with a level of nuance that we didn't see in this episode.
    The dialogue was pretty generic, but also lacking bcos it's very obvious that they could've change the writing to allow for the characters to express themselves as more nuanced.
    For example, Galadriel was being a dbag to her comrades and they could've given her lines to show that she emphasized with them and could see things from their point of view, while also making a case for her own in order to push them forward.
    They didn't do a good job of leaving me with a good first impression of the characters.
    Aside from that, the dialogue was also lacking the poetic nature that the LOTR trilogy had. That was a work of art and beauty.
    I do like most of the visuals, sets and costumes, but some of the Elven armors and costumes looked a bit like cosplay.
    Not into how the Elves acted so much like what you'd expect from humans. With all their centuries/millennia of experience, they acted as if they had only been alive for a few decades. With age comes a certain level of perspective because of all the things you've experienced and changed you.
    The LOTR trilogy set a high standard, but they chose to take a shot at living up to it and the first episode failed. I say the same about The Hobbit trilogy.

    Galadriel was a bloody sorceress, a prophetic seer, and a Queen. She was born a royal elf to a King and Queen. Her daughter Celebrian was married to Elron and was the mother of Arwen. So, Galadriel was Elron's mother-in-law and the grandmother of Arwen. The idea that Galadriel carried a sword and subject to anyone, but her royal parents is laughable. She was a Princess - and by the time the second age occurred she was already very old- not a child - and was married to Celeborn her lifelong mate (since childhood) and husband. At the beginning of the second age, they both ruled as Lord and Lady over Gil-galad... This Amazon abomination is so far off of who Galadriel really was (in the Tolkien Universe), that it would have been better just to create entirely new character from scratch and NOT use the name Galadriel. GUYladriel is a good name and maybe that character was the very distant cousin of Galadriel or something.

    Lauren, I respect you and have been a fan of your channels for a long time (even before you worked for Blaze), so please don't take this the wrong way. I've read both The Silmarillion and the Trilogy upwards of 10 times in the last fifteen years ever since I was in high school, and I thought the first two episodes were very well done. Although Amazon doesn't have the rights the Silmarillion, they also can't contradict the Silmarillion. Morfydd Clark's Galadriel will be the Galadriel we know from the Third Age by the end of this series, that will be her journey as a character, but she's not that person yet. At this point she's still the young headstrong elf that Tolkien wrote her as in the early First and Second Ages. One of my favorite parts of the first episode was the exchange between Galadriel and Elrond in which Elrond is both firm with her yet as a friend, and he says that if there is a whisper of what she suspects, he will not rest until it is put right. Part of the series will be seeing Galadriel and Elrond help each other into becoming the Elves we know them to be from the Trilogy. However, they were not those characters in the 2nd Age. Also, you mentioned how the Elves in Peter Jackson's movies were "glowing" while these were not; I suggest you re-read the Silmarillion, because the Elves in especially the First Age but also the Second were nothing like they were by the Third Age. By the Third Age, the Elves time in Middle-Earth was coming to an end, and thus, they were much more ethereal, withdrawing themselves, so the Age of Men could dawn. I thought the these two episodes made good homages to Tolkien. Another of my favorite scenes in the series was when Celebrimbor told the story about how Feanor's art nearly turned the heart of Morgoth himself. That technically isn't in the canon story in the Silmarillion, but the line began with "They say," implying only a rumor that had been told, and I thought it conveyed Tolkien's ideas about Art and Creativity very well, especially as we read in Leaf by Niggle and the essay "On Fairy Stories". I've only seen Peter Jackson's movies a handful of times, but I've read the Trilogy, the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, the Three Great Tales, the entire History of Middle Earth, the Nature of Middle Earth, and Tales from the Perilous Realm, many times, and I thought the series did a good job. Yes, they made changes, but I didn't find those changes worse than the changes that Peter Jackson made. My biggest worry has to do with how they're going to adequately convey the mortality of Men with the condensed timeline. I would have loved to see a series in which Humans are re-casted every season because the characters we grew close to had simply grown old and died. The mortality of Men is one of the major elements that leads to the Breaking of the Ban of the Valar that leads to Illuvatar ultimately destroying Numenor and re-shaping the world. Hopefully, they find a way to adequately convey human mortality.

      Regarding Guy-ladriel - I don't think it was ever implied that she went on some solo crusade against the forces of darkness. Honestly it reminds me of how the Rangers were said to have lived but she did it for 'centuries'...and then later when we catch up to her in the third age she is just ready to leave Sauron alone? Doesn't this set up some controversial motivations for her? I mean honestly, for her to be the ONLY ONE to correctly diagnose the threat of Sauron and for that just to be unmentioned in any books or Jackson's Trilogy...doesn't this seem off to you? Isn't this clearly the result of propaganda and not a naked desire to simply tell good stories? None of the legendary male elves that populate this age are jumping around like ninjas single handedly slaying trolls - no it's the female of course. It's just that she's supposed to be more of a compassionate character. Her mind is her main weapon and her presence alone is awe-inspiring. That's why Gimly becomes completely smitten when he first meets her. Granted this version is younger but when you envision Galadriel, you don't see a her fighting an orc in the mud.

    It's not for defending this TV show, but there's no show or movie to this day that could compare to the books. You defend PJ's movies, and I like them a lot, even the Hobbit, but they changed a lot of very core things in the story: No scourge of the shire (maybe the most important chapter in all three books), Hollywood unbeatable Legolas (pretty far from Legolas from the books with stupid and insufferable action sequences, he is blond and skinny, so he is cool), Hollywood Buffon Gimli (extremely far from the books, completely ruin the character, you can tell reading the books that he is the most proficient warrior in the fellowship, even Aragorn was impressed by him, but to PJ's and Hollywood he is short and fat, so he is funny), the Oathbreakers killed everything in Pelannor fields, they might as well continue and kill all armies of Mordor and Sauron himself, and the list go on...and I'm not even covering the changes in the Hobbit, because actually it doesn't matter, still are enjoyable movies
    So, considering the TV show owners only have rights for a very small part of the second age, if PJ changed a lot of things (some of them understandable and some of them completely stupid IMO), it is obvious that they will change a lot (A LOT!) of things to fill those holes.
    The bottom line here is: Is just a god damn TV show, as the movies were just movies, and none of them will ever could be compared to the books
    I consider myself a hardcore Tolkien's Legendarium fan, but if I had your attitude I couldn't even enjoy PJ's movies, which I do because, I understand that this is the best that real world productions can do for hardcore fanboys like me. (it's a very sad thing to say, but it's true)
    PS: I didn't like the armors of some the characters, they look like made of plastic.

      You identify two things that also really jarred, for me, in the films: the army of the dead’s cartoonish overrunning of the enemy, and Legolas defying the laws of physics. The rest I found forgivable, due to the limitations of adapting book to screen. I, too, would have liked to see the scouring of the Shire, and the hobbits in the Barrow Downs for that matter, but some sacrifices had to be made in what was already 10 hours of film.

    the music made me think of those electronic pianos with the "choir" setting everytime they played the elfy elf music. in the original trilogy the singing had actual lyrics and meaning. I also noticed some of the actors seemed to have difficulty holding an accent a couple times in episode one. The elves are played too human to me, that's the vibe I was getting. They're just humans with pointy ears, they don't have that age old immortal wisdom vibe
    ( So many of the male elves have short hair and I really don't like it)

    Number one Tolkien never had Galadriel going after Sauron. Number two Tolkien never depicted Galadriel as having or using a sword or wearing armor and using her brawn or brute force in taking care of the enemy. She used her intelligence and magic. All of this is just flat out absent in Tolkien's legendarium. The Galadriel of rings of power doesn't exist but is an Amazon Prime's creation. She's never given the title by Tolkien commander of armies and leading them into battle. So you're really missing a lot here in your review. So back to the beginning, Tolkien never once in even just one sentence describes her as having a sword or using a sword.
