What do you think of the show?
( some Tolkien nitpicks aside) I'm actually really enjoying the show, I loved seeing a dwarf kingdom at its peak and I love the dynamic between Durin and Elrond
I'm loving it and your reviews 🙂
I love it so far, especially the visuals and secondly seeing Galadriel be even more of a bad ass.
I’m also betting that the stranger is Sauron. It would parallel the ongoing search for Sauron as well as expedite the Harfoots out of their current lands and maybe onto the shire
I'm really enjoying it so far. The dwarves are so cool!
It’s got promise. Better than expected in some ways.
The box the Durins are looking at likely contains mithril, which is what Celebrimbor will use to make the Doors of Durin (and, quite possibly, be what he uses to help make is Mega Forge). The rings for the Dwarves aren't quite made yet; Celebrimbor and the elves need to learn how to make them from Annatar/Sauron first.
bingo
you would hope so but Amazon doesnt give a shit about the lore or established timeline so who knows
Came here to pretty much say the same thing.
@@snailorgy I respectfully disagree
@@snailorgy Give it up hater.
The yellow sand resonating in the opening sequence into different cymatic shapes represents the resonating song of the Ainur.... The dark sand represents Melkor's "discords" in the music of the Ainur
My thoughts as well..
Excellent interpretation
This dude doesn’t know shit. He states multiple times the rings aren’t made then he goes it’s a ring in durins chest!😐😐🤨🤨
I really want the stranger to be a blue wizard. The timing would be right, and they are a blank canvas character wise. I think anything that points to it being Gandalf is a red herring to throw us off. Give us a brand new wizard, please and thank you.
I think Elrond was playing for Durin the whole time. When he “loses” you can see he was playing it that way to rely on Durin’s big heart. He even looks like he is smiling at one point to himself because it is playing out like he expected.
Me too
Y’know, if you guys would turn on the subtitles as you watched, it would tell you things like character names (like Fingol in ep.1) and that the Stranger is shouting “Mana Uwe!” (plus the whacky diacritical marks) here in ep.2. And as noted elsewhere, the fact that the flames aren’t hot calls back to Galadriel’s comment about evil draining the warmth from their torches.
all of this. always watch this way. Finrod was easily identified.
I was about to say the way the overshot looked of the stranger laying in the crater literally looks like it’s the eye of Sauron. Idk if the dude is evil for sure or is yet to become evil but it’s definitely weird that the flames weren’t hot because of what Galadriel said in the first episode about the torches not being hot due to evil draining the warmth from them.
I think The Stranger should be another Istari, not Olorin. Tolkien changed his writings in his late periods about blue wizards and sad they were first sent during the second age. I'd love to watch an unexplored Gandalf-like wizard, especially one of the blue wizards whom more powerful than Olorin
I agree. I think this is actually Sauruman. We have to remember that when he first arrived at Middle Earth he was good and true to his mission. And he was the white wizard because he was the most powerful. At the beginning of the whole series, Galadriel says not all is at it seems. And we would think that Sauruman is evil but he wasn't. In fact, he at one point had a very close relationship with the halflings, as seen by him having some smoking weed in his tower which Pippin found later.
The only thing that has me questioning this guess is the pulling of his earlobe - which was a Gandalf move. So I could be wrong. 😊
There's a close up on his eyes and they change to a deep blue color. It's not Gandalf, because how he arrives in middle earth is too important to change.
I hope it's not Gandalf, but I don't know who it is. It's gotta be one of the wizards.
@@newchrisusa He's one of the blue wizards, time and location fits and they specifically oppose sauron in the east, which is where galadriel seems to be headed. The show runners would want to use them because Tolkien didn't write much about them. In the show the harfoots seem to have some connection with the east through the black characters, so a blue wizard would tie everything together nicely.
The stranger is 100% Gandalf
It's not the Arkenstone. That was found in Erebor aka The Lonely Mountain, which is nowhere near Khazad Dum, and was found much later.
I was about to say the same thing 😅
I think the Stranger is a blue wizard. He came from the stars because he is a Maia of Varda, lady of the stars. They said “the stars looks strange” and he falls from the stars. He might be trying to use the stars to find his friend, who also fell but landed elsewhere. I don’t think any of the Harfoots besides a few will survive. This show is gonna end in tragedy because of the war for the rings, and I think those Harfoots letting this istari in will cause issues. The two blue wizards were gone by the time the third age started so it would be great to explore them rather than go straight to Gandalf and we know their stories are going to end tragically. It would explain exactly what happened, and what corruption, the wizards experienced.
And I think one of the stolen simals is in the box.
Small nerdy correction: It was Yavanna, Aule's wife who created the Sun and Moon from the remains of the Two Trees. Aule made Vessels for the Sun and Moon to be carried to the sky.
I think the stranger is Saruman. Remember he can most likely do everything Gandolf can. Was once known to be good, but kept mostly to himself and quiet in the beginning.
The small chest is most likely filled with mithril. It was Moria's greatest wealth and what caused the dwarves to dig too deep, which led to a certain sleeping Balrog.
Your one of my favorite breakdown channels I’ve been watching you since WandaVision keep up the great work and why was that Gollum impression perfect
Durin's chest most likely has a pile of mithril ore inside it, I highly doubt it's one of the magic rings given to the dwarfs, I think Durin was worried that "the elves" might of learned of the Dwarf's discovery of mithril ore, and would want to take it from them...
Also means the balrog might be seen by the end of the series or at least hinted at
Does mythril glow? Another possibility is that it could be one of the missing silmarils. Been a while since I read through the wiki but I'm fairly certain one of them gets lost in the ocean during this time period.
@@vividimagination2044 in moonlight sting and elvish weapons glow she goblin folk are near possibly mithril infused light as a feather they say
Hope you never change the intro music... and the meme edits,,, Gold
I truly hope the stranger is one of the blue wizards because I believe Tolkien stated they arrived before the other wizards which is a bit nebulous but it would fit better and let us have some fun with new characters
Yeah. The writers of this show have worked on other acclaimed shows, they know how to deceive the viewers. I mean it looks life Gandalf, he's dressed like Gandalf. It's really too obvious
I hope it's that or it's a balrog. It's just the least intrusive options considering the cannon lore.
Iirc, Saruman and one of the Blueses roamed Middle Earth together before they were entitled Istari
**IF** "the Stranger" is "gandalf" he's not going to be named that, he will likely take the name Tharkun or Incanus which are other earlier names of Olorin/Gandalf when first incarnated on Middle Earth. "The Stranger" was yelling "Where.. Fire! FIRE!" or something similar he wasn't yelling "olorin", on the closed captions it says he was yelling "Manna, UWE !"
I hope to the gods he wasn't demanding Uwe Boll direct an episode.
They will probably just go with mithrandir. The elven name for him.
If you watch the meteor scene with captions on, it’s pretty apparent that he’s not Gandalf.
@@camerongostin7788 All that wooshing and crackling.
Seriously though, its definitely someone evil. Especially considering it represents the stone that is looking down and sinking.
I think what is in the dwarf chest is mithril. That's why they are paranoid about the elves finding out.
oh really?
@@spenndoolie yes Mithril is the best guess. A clip from a future ep (probably three) shows Durin holding a silver piece of material.
When Arondir realizes he is cornered from every direction seemed like when Fili realized he was trapped by Azog the Defiler and his Orcs
Imagine one elf being afraid of maybe 2 orcs….79 years in the army and this dude hasn’t seen or done anything, but everyone keeps calling him brave for some reason. Dude pissed his pants the first orc he saw…or thinks he saw.
Hello my friend. Excelent video! The Stranger's words are quenya: "mana" =who, what/"Ure"=heat, warm. One possable translation: Secret Fire, supporting your words about him. About the rights for some Silmarillion terms, in the series used preciselly those references in the appendix: Silmarils, Finrod, Feanor, Morgoth, Tree of Light. And what the dwarven chest keep is mithril. We have seen the balrog in the trailers already.
Hey Ryan. To be fair, thanks for clarifying about the elves been awaken in Middle Earth. Also, check your pronunciation of Eregion. Theory: it is Mithril quoting Tolkien: "Later some of the Noldor went to Eregion, [...]. This they did because they learned that mithril had been discovered in Moria". I'm sure the writers know about it, hope so at least.
Love this channel, this breakdown, & this show!
I enjoyed it as well. Not sure why it's getting all of the hate that it has been receiving.
7:20 when Nori's father breaks is ankle, it was the same time that the Stranger broke the stick he was working to draw with.
Or maybe he saw a vision of it happening?
I came here to ask why this wasn't talked about. I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed it was missed
15:21 Nice Purphoros!!! As an MTG player I felt warm and fuzzy inside
We need a sitcom starring Doug and Ryan. One episode, one day in the life of...
i think the show looks amazing i love it
I'm leaning towards the stranger being evil. His fire was cold, he killed the fireflies, he did something related to Nori's father's ankle breaking. They made a point to show Galadriel choose to return to Middle-Earth at the same time that the stranger flew across the sky. It would make sense for one of them to be good and one to be evil like a sort of natural balance. Lastly, it's too obvious that it's Gandalf/Mithrandir/Olorin. It would be a fun twist for him to not be what we expect him to be.
The cold fire has me thinking evil, but I'm steal leaning towards Gandalf
I think he’s their take on the Anti-Christ. Like an anti-Gandalf character forced to do the will of Sauron
My first thought was that he is Gandalf!
It would be interesting to go that way and maybe make it Annatar. Making it Gandalf is a bit on the nose so I think it would be a good subversion of ideas. It would also work as it would link of how the One Ring manages to end up in the hands of Hobbits.
It's not Gandalf. It's a Balrog.
Always thought that the opening expresses the Music of the Ainur (given that you can created these sand patterns using sound) with the dark sand representing the discord created my Melkor to the music.
I love that!
That was exactly my first though when I saw the opening. Very good representation of the music of creation.
Durin's chest definitely doesn't have a ring, they weren't forged yet. It's obviously mithril. The meteor man could be one of the blue wizards, though Gandalf seems more likely. It doesn't align with Tolkien's work at all though, so let's see. Olore didn't want to come to middle earth in the first place, so having him come first as a scout sounds dumb. Plus, he supposedly got an elven ring upon arrival from Cirdan.
There's no chance it's a ring. The show has made it clear that they haven't been forged yet. That the forge hasn't been built yet. That Celebrimbor doesn't even know it's rings he's going to make yet. Just objects of real power. I have no idea how they came to this conclusion. It is beyond a stretch to me.
I was thinking either mithril or a silmaril
@@toddblack3957 it’s actually beyond annoying bc he even states multiple times in the video they haven’t been made yet. Completely illogical to suggest it’s a ring
@@gaper1287 some might even call it stone cold stupid. My jaw fell in my lap when he said that. Then I exploded into laughter.
Love your breakdowns! This is a complicated world so you as the guide is very helpful, thanks!
Great breakdown, Ryan and ScreenCrush team! And take the time you need, we can wait.
The dwarf box has mithril in it. This was right around the time of when they first discovered it
when the fire gets absorbed into the stranger for a split second looks like the eye of Sauron
🔝 *Thanks ! Feel free to reach out 😊 I have something for you...*
Something that I can't stop thinking about is the fact that Nori doesn't feel the heat of the flames and in Ep. 1 Galadriel tells her soldiers in the ice palace that the place was so evil even fire doesn't give off heat. Still hoping for Stranger being Gandolf, but could be early evidence for a Sauron twist
The “to be fair” bit from Letterkenny was a surprise to be sure; but a welcome one

I was about a week behind on watching, and my favorite recap channel drops the recap right on time. Awesome
Your reviews are near perfection. They make everything make so much more sense contextually. Excited to watch this show weekly “with you!”
The stranger could also be Saruman too back when he was good as he was the first on sent to meddle earth

Appreciate all your work on these. Thank you!
Take your time man. These videos are beyond worth it!
I have watched it 3 times now and am amazed with the details.
BTW, the Stranger is a Blue Wizard my bets.
That's who I want it to be. If it's Gandalf many centuries early then I think that's breaking the lore, not bending it. Either be a blue wizard or an evil character. Anyone but Gandalf.
truly appreciate all the work you do man. Thank you
Nicely done as always.
You are the best at these breakdowns man🙌🏾

dammm worth the wait on this vid! Thanks screencrush
+1 from this Canadian for the Letterkenny drop.
great work Ryan et al, thanks
Finally! Been waiting for this one! Thank you. In general I like it, waiting to see more...also, I've been feeling the urge to read more Tolkien
My favorite thing about this channel is Doug "That's a stretch but I LIKE IT"
Can’t be Gandalf…Cirdan gave Gandalf his elven ring when he arrived at the Grey Havens. That would be a huge deviation. I’m aiming for a Blue Wizard.
Bruh when you switched up and said "his precious" 😂😂 perfect.
my bet is that the stranger is Tom Bombadil. He is a character that is included within the books and would be fair game for the series. If so then the constellation that he is looking for will likely lead to the shire.
I was thinking he was a harfoot. They mention a Goldie that I thought could be Goldberry
I don't think the Stranger was Tom Bombadil because he already existed at the time Middle Earth (or even Arda) was created.
From LOTR, Chapter 7, "In the House of Tom Bombadil"...
'"Who are you, Master?' he asked.
'Eh, what?' said Tom sitting up, and his eyes glinting in the gloom. 'Don't you know my name yet? That's the only answer. Tell me, who are you, alone, yourself and nameless? But you are young and I am old. Eldest, that's what I am. Mark my words, my friends: Tom was here before the river and the trees; Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn. He made paths before the Big
People, and saw the little People arriving. He was here before the Kings and the graves and the Barrow-wights. When the Elves passed westward, Tom was here already, before the seas were bent. He knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless - before the Dark Lord came from Outside.'"
appreciate the letterkenny reference! outstanding review as usual.
Yesssss I was waiting for this one!!!
I was sad we didn't get to see any badass lady dwarf beards, I was looking forward to some fabulously styled facial hair.
Bless you (and Doug) for remaining objective in your breakdowns.

Doug likes to enjoy things and stuffs cause of his fluffer head and paws
Love that you used a photo of Purphuros from Magic: The Gathering to represent Aulë 💖
Been waiting for this!!
I think the snake in the opening credits represents the worm lady gladriel fights to avoid while trying to stay alive in the ocean.
The letterkenny reference was fucking top tier 😂😂😂😂 I love this dude
🔝 *Thanks ! Feel free to reach out 😊 I have something for you....*
I swear at some point in Tolkien's random writings he said Gandalf, under a different name and identity, hunted Balrogs of Morgoth (themselves corrupted Maiar) and was known by the Elves before eventually coming as a Wizard. That said, any time I've tried to find this reference online I come up empty.
The intro represents the ainulindale. It'd a cymagraph which makes shapes out of sound waves. That's how the ainulindale created Arda and Ea.
Worth the wait:)
*your breakdown was worth the wait… Also enjoying the show!
SIL-MA-RIL
the doors of durin was not build yet and the runes are clearly dwarvish, they r more linear and squared than the elvish
I think they have mithril on the chest, not a ring, not yet.
Looking forward to the rest of this series.
Got hooked on this channel for the Marvel content, so hearing you say “Morgoth” and “Sauron” is kinda blowing my mind

The stranger is 100% Mephisto! Its been confirmed!
@®️Telegram @ScreenCrush scam much?
Disa mentions the earth resonating, telling where to dig and where it should be left untouched (after a quick contemplative break). I guess she's mentioning the dwarves already feel something evil lurking below? A nod to the Balrog or the nameless creatures?

Anyone else love Elrond's voice? Reminds me of Legalos' voice in Bakshi's 1978 LoTR version. So calm, wise and ancient sounding. Love it.

Why does no one really talk about the greatness the Titelsequence is?!?! All of middle earth, Valinor, really nearly everything there is was thought of by Iluvatar. And he composed great songs. Songs of creation. What we see in the Title sequence are chladnic sound figures. The Sound creates these figures exactly how Iluvatar created Arda, Humans, Elves and so much more. And songs in generell have so much meaning and might in the saga. Luthien battled Morgoth singing! And then you see black sand mixing with the rest, this symbolizes the evil song of Morgoth and with that everything bad and evil in the world.
I love that!
First time in your channel, and Now I love it. Excellent comments, notes and explinations.
And one more detail, is clear why is’t no a good idea to have dogs that can talk, ( min 26:49) Doug is totally right.
Amazing video.
I'm really digging your videos and I'm really digging how on point everything is. I just wanted to add to your description of the opening credits with this... I don't think it is necessarily Sauron being represented by the black sand, but it is evil in general. It is the discord that Melkor (yet to be named Morgoth by Fëanor) introduced to the Great Song of the Ainur that created Arda/Middle Earth. He basically sang out of tune on purpose to mess things up 😆. This opening sequence with the sand cymatics is a visual representation of the music of the angels! Leading up to the show I was wondering if we were going to see a representation of Ainulindalë and was as giddy as a child when it clicked watching episode 2! This was one of the most clever things I've seen on television in a while. My trust in the showrunners went up as a result. We're in for it, friends!
Your Smeagol impression is really good 👍
7:00 - Turn on captions. The Stranger says "Úrë! Mana!"
Man... I really have to rewatch The Fellowship. I mean they've invented it all back then, the whole aesthetics of Middle Earth, of the Hobbits and the Dwarfs and the Elves and everything.
Love your videos. Not sure if anyone else pointed this out, if so, sorry for the repeat. Gandalf/Olorin was specifically picked by Manwe (Lord of the Skies, Eagles being his emissaries) and I believe that is the origin of his strong connection to the Eagles (always coming to his aid). There is a good section on this in the Unfinished Tales (The Istari).
Mithril ✨ as the glow in the box would also make sense, as it marks the beginning of the end for the Dwarves at Khazad-dûm. Their secret greed and mining too deep…this would then link back up with what most viewers remember from LoTR with the Balrog.
🔝 *Thanks ! Feel free to reach out 😊 I have something for you...*

Appreciate all these breakdowns on the Rings of Power. Cheers man, and keep going!
Dwarves and humans never forged any of the rings. Sauron and the elves created sixteen together and then each secretly made some of their own, three for the elves and the one ring for Sauron. Long story short, when Sauron got pissed and took the rings back, the elves kept the three that they made on their own, and Sauron distributed the rest to humans and dwarves, hoping to corrupt them since the elves had escaped him.

iv been checking the rating on tomato meter etc ... the majority of votes are 1 and 4.5 meaning a huge differentiation. very strange. personally i love it
I love your theories and breakdowns for all the shows you do. May I recommend checking out the Prancing Pony Podcast for help with pronunciation though? With these types of invented language, things get pretty confusing, but the men there really go through things extremely well, including how things are said. (Air-egg-ee-on) Highly recommended, including their season on the Silmarillion!
Amazon has said no “Annatar lord of gifts” in this series
I don't think the Stranger is Gandalf appearing an age earlier, because when the fire ball flies over one of the leaves falls down and has been corrupted and rots when the Elven king picks it up. They might not be connected but I think they are.
I love how You used Purphoros card design from MtG
The overhead shot of the meteor man still in the crater, his body forms what looks like a letter or a symbol. Maybe it does and that could be a hint as to who he is
The "straight edged architecture" mentioned in the sand sequence shares a suspicious and subtle resemblance to Andúril alternatively called Narsil. From a visual standpoint, the ways the corner curve into each other are similar- could it be a subtle way to suggest Numenor-?
I admit, I don't know as much as I'd like to about Tolkien's lore, but I do know a pattern when I see one...
Not that it really adds much with Numenor being effectively confirmed to show up.

Lots of great stuff in these things if you don't mind putting down the culture wars! In terms of 1st age references, some sources who've talked with the showrunners have said they went to the family many times to ask if they could use certain points to make sure the story fit well.Good catch on the secret fire reference! In the Silmarillion, the secret fire is something like the biblical breath of life, as far as I can tell. It's the spirit of hope and everything that lives and may be a sense of purity, beauty, life, and creativity. My teeth hurt when he ate the snailshells but the actor said it was just a chocolate shell. My guess is also that Annatar is already at work, probably knows about the Mithril and knows the elves will need a good forge to create rings which would have power of Valinor like the Silmarils. Probably end of season one or maybe two it will become clear it was Annatar all along?
The brown wizard was great. I'd love to see more of him
Radagast you mean?
