Well, Tolkien said that he was a Hobbit in every way other than size.

Oh it's not like he's an IMMORTAL DEMIGOD! Who single handedly orchestrated the downfall of Sauron over thousands of years or anything..... The only reason anyone else is involved in the Fellowship is because he made it happen. Wow forget this video and head on over to 'In Deep Geek' for some real LOTR content.
"Gandalf is not a essential character in the movie"... with that statement, you negated any credibility to anything you say about the movie or books... Gandalf is the reason the story exists... if he hadn't told Bilbo to go on the quest to Erebor with the dwarves, Bilbo wouldn't have found the ring...
If Smaug never sacked Erebor then none of it would have ever happened, no Gandolf going to Bilbos, no adventure for Bilbo and definitely no ring. Or I could say if the dwarves weren't so greedy hoarding all that gold to attract the dragon in the first place none of it would have taken place. (Just saying)
@@yogidemis8513 ok thats too far
I don't know... as far as story devices go, instead of the sacking of Erebor, some other reason for a quest could have been made up by Tolkien without really changing anything about the basic premise of the story. But take Gandalf out of it, and... well... what would be left of it?
@@arjenlaan4103 facts

I swear there must be somebody who is actually interested in at least the film's who you could get to write the script rather than somebody who has no idea what they are saying, to the extent where they look like Shaun Connery at the first reading of The Fellowship of the Ring.

This is impossible to not disagree

Also fun fact: Sean Bean did not have time to read the script before acting in one of the scenes "One does not simply" so he put the papers on his knees and read them during making of the film!
"Gandalf the Grey is not an essential character" Oh, so this is a bullshit video...
It sure is. I would have also accepted "Clearly a paid voice actor narrating something he didn't write"

I can literally watch anything LOTR related every single day of my life and not get bored. Any fantasy movie trying to surpass LOTR would have literally be something out of this world, because from where I'm sitting LOTR is one true of kind masterpiece.
Everyone who is a Lord of the Rings fan should know most of these. I knew the fact about Christopher Lee but have to add that I am glad Christopher Lee played Saruman, not Gandalf. “Gandalf wasn’t a central character in LOTR” did y’all even watch the movie?
Gandalf is literally one of the gods who created the entire world.
@@Peter_1986 Actually, he's more like an archangel sent by the gods to protect Middle Earth from the spreading corrupting darkness of Markor/Morgoth and his dark archangel Sauron, who is a very similar type of being as Gandalf, but opposite. Either way, without Gandalf, the story would not have happened, and Sauron would eternally hold dominion over Middle Earth.
@@Peter_1986 you might need to read the Silmarillion again..
From the opposite side, things which die-hard Tolkien fans were the only ones to even know about:
Merry and Pippin's swords weren't given to them by Aragorn; they were obtained from a burial mound (barrow) and the swords were magical, especially designed to fight against dark powers such as the ringwraiths. The ringwraiths were invulnerable to ordinary weapons, but a single blow from one of the magic weapons was enough to make a ringwraith temporarily vulnerable to a blow from an ordinary weapon.
Which explains what happened with Eowyn and the Witch King.
Mote accurate than “given by Aragorn” would be “given by Tom Bombadil”
didnt all four of the hobbits- samwise, frodo. merry, and pippin all find swords in the barrowdowns and frodo's sword ended up breaking on weathertop i dont remember thats why im asking
@@jonnyjonjo Your memory serves you correctly. Tom Bombadil encouraged the hobbits to take swords (long daggers actually, but large enough to be swords for hobbits) from the barrow-downs. Frodo did end up breaking his sword during a fight and I think you're right that it was the one on Weathertop, but later was given Sting by Bilbo.
@@melkiorwiseman5234 alright just wanted to be sure if i remembered correctly also was kinda mad they didnt have tom bombadil in the movies
Slight correction: nothing ever suggests being invulnerable to ordinary weapons. The Barrow-blade caused immense pain (more than any other weapon), and paralysed the WK - but nothing more.
Lotr would not be in legendary status as it is now if Nickolas Cage played Aragorn. Thank God for that.

While on a tour of Wellington in New Zealand, our guide, who worked on LOTR, told us a story.
When shooting scenes in Wellington, viggo mortensen liked to stay in character the whole time. One particular night Viggo decided to running around the streets of wellington in costume, swinging his sword and yelling. Concerned civilians nearby looked at him and called the police saying there was a mad man running around the streets swinging a sword. Police arrived and asked Viggo to put the sword down and he replied with "Do you know who I am? I am Aragorn, son of Arathorn!" The police then arrested Viggo and took him to the police station.
The next morning the Peter Jackson and producers went to the police station and explained Viggo's method acting, so they set him free.
Till this day at Wellington Police Station there is a plaque saying "Do You Know I am? I am Aragorn, Son of Arathorn! - Viggo Mortensen"
Did Viggo seriously spend the night in jail. Whoa

There was an interview with Peter Jackson detailing Christopher Lee's input on Saruman's death scene. Christopher Lee, having some involvement in some clandestine operations in WWII, was expressly familiar with what a human being sounds like when stabbed in the back. As if he wasn't already a legend for his acting career, the man had experience dispatching actual Nazis...
Elijah Wood’s sister, Hannah, is in the Two Towers. She is one of the women that is brought to the caves before the battle of Helm’s Deep.
Gandy not central! Are you on drugs?
I think the same
Gandy :D
Gandalf is Frodo's mentor and he is the one who launches him into the adventure. Actually, he ends up being the mentor of Aragorn too. Besides, he is the leader of the fellowship of the ring so I think that he is a central character.
Viggo didn't buy Arwen's horse for himself. He bought it for Liv Tyler's rider stunt double who did all the fast riding scenes when Arwen was escaping the wraiths with Frodo.
To people reading this, instead of watching this bad video, why not invest your time in watching the Behind the Scenes of the Fellowship of the Ring? That's where "OSSA Movies" got all this information anyway
Cast member's kids as extras. Peter Jackson's kids as hobbits in Bilbo's birthday, as Rohirim refugees in TTT, as Minas Tirith residents in ROTK. Viggo Mortenson's son Henry as a soldier at Helm's Deep and Sean Astin's daughter as Sam's daughter Elanor in the very last scene.
When Frodo returns to BagEnd, after Bilbo's party, he discovers the one Ring on the floor.
And if you pay close attention, he doesn't step on it or anywhere around it. He automatically looks down at it.
Yea, that scene dosen’t really seem natural, he just enters then stops and looks down directly at it like he was expecting it,
i think it would have been better if he slowly noticed it with his glance while taking continous steps
This is the first time I heard that Tolkien thought that Sam was the true hero of the story. I've always thought this. He was thought of as fat, silly and timid, yet he was the only one other than Bilbo(questionably) who used the one ring and resisted. Even Gandalf was afraid of it. Sam willingly gave it back to Frodo without being prompted. The only other person who did that was Tom. I believe Tolkien put Tom in the story to parallel how powerful Sam's will was.
I always thought Sam was the hero of heroes too!
True, he had strong spirit
Gandalf certanly is one of the most important character. He starts at the Hobbit and continue at LOTR. Sir Ian Mc Kellen didn't read the books too and started to read them when he was shooting. He always told," that's what Tolkien said " when Peter Jackson wanted to change something.
And Mr.Lee explane to Jackson how you react when someone stab you with a knife because he did that in the 2e WW...
When you literally knew all of this already and could expand on the facts. For example Liv Tyler received Arwen’s sword. Or Christopher Lee confronted Ian Mckellen about how he wanted to play Gandalf which is a whole story.
Maybe that's why Christopher Lee made a better Saruman; it parallels the relationship between Saruman (who was jealous of Gandalf) and Gandalf (who was just trying to do his job)
I love how everyone is roasting this video for making the statement that Gandalf was not a central character! 😂
As they should. Such an ignorant statement.
These are things you know if you’ve watched the behind the scenes footage. So yeah, a die hard fan actually knows this stuff...
THANK YOU Henry...there could be no other Aragorn.
The real fans know this stuff XD still a good video, but the title is not very fitting.
I think you also forgot to put in that Viggo Mortensen almost drowned in a scene
True when he’s floating down the river in TTT

There's another detail among many... At Bilbo's birthday party, while he's telling the 3 trolls story to the younglings, two of the younglings are Peter Jackson's kids. And in the two towers his daughter is one of the Rohan citizens hiding in the caves during the battle of helm's deep.
Viggo almost drowned during the river scene after falling off the cliff with the warg.
The black gate scene on the return of the king was filmed on a land mine field.
Imagine the knife goes 5cm more right....😳

Who cares. I follow the characters not the actors that portrayed them.
You know the scene of Aragon fighting the five Nazguls was filmed as the first scene Viggo had to play? As you mentioned they had problemes with the casting of Aragon, so Viggo entered the set in the last minute. He needed a crash curs in sword fighting, cause he should fight five Nazguls and should look like a profi. On the other hand all four Hobbit-Actors had sword fight lessons since one month, so they really knew much of tricks - however had to play the weak Hobbits.
The fact that 11 hours and 20 minutes is nearly half a day BLEW MY MIND!!
Peter Jackson is notorious for caring about plant and animal lives. Knowing this fact is one of the reasons I love the movies so much. For instance the first hobbiton was abandoned and now animals live in the houses. The second time they were made with biodegradable materials prior to becoming a tourist attraction.
i didn't know that!! thank for say it
One thing many people miss, at the end of the return of the king. When the elves, bilbo, & frodo are at the harbor to board the ship. Gandolf shows his ring of power. Showing that Gandolf was one who carried one of the three rings of power of the elves.
The casting was a masterpiece. I can’t imagine any other actor playing any role. Each character is played perfectly.
I was about to write the same thing. Even the guys who played Orcs and Uruks absolutely nailed it
You'd said the same thing if Nicholas Cage have gotten the part, actors seem to learn their role so good we as fans always say we can't see any other actor playing that part
That's 11 hours WITHOUT pauses... You know... Snack grab, pee time etc... So it can easily go up to 12-13 hours. Which IMHO is time well spent

Gandalf is not an essential character? Guess who also didn’t read the books
Pretty sure he played abit more than a cameo. 😄
Fact: The character Tolkien himself most identified with was Faramir (Boromir's brother). In fact, he gave the character of Faramir some of his own personal traits in the books.
Every actor & actress casted for this fabulous trilogy took their role and transformed it meticulously into the character that was suppose to be. Kudos to everyone involved in making this trilogy into a huge success…👏👏

At the end when Frodo turns to smile before boarding ship, his eyes flash yellow for a second.
Sean Connery as Gandalf? "You ... shall not passshhh!"
Thats funny as hell lol
"Not THIS time!" ...... This expression is used many times throughout the trilogy by different actors. This is either an example of very bad writing or is some sort of inside joke between Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Peter Jackson (the screenwriters). I will not accept the possibility that the redundant use of this expression is a coincidence. The background to this mystery is something I would love to know.

XD Last year for Hobbit Day, my online friends and I planned to do a marathon of the extended editions of both the Hobbit and LOTR trilogy. I was the only one who stayed awake for the full 26 hours it took to complete that (there was a few hours between the trilogies to let some people sleep).
Also, a cameo most wouldn't know... that orc pulling from the well behind Saruman as he walks by is one of New Zealand's news anchors at the time, Paul Holmes. I remember the news segment that showed him getting prosthetics applied and doing the filming. I specifically remember the way he moved as he pulled the rope.
Though that being said, being from NZ, I know HEAPS of people that were extras in the movies, or worked on props. From my media studies teacher being an elf at Helm's Deep, a friend's mother making the dead body props, my grandfather's horses being in the battles, and our local sword guy making sword props.
