#RingsOfPower #EasterEggs #LordOfTheRings
Welcome back to ScreenCrush, I’m Brian Silliman, temporarily filling in for Ryan Arey, and these are all of the Easter eggs, references, and little things that you may have missed from Episode 5 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
The episode is titled “Partings” which may be a nod to the chapter in the book of Return of the King called “Many Partings.” While it is a literal reference in this episode to certain characters and groups of characters parting ways, it is also evocative of how many of them seek to part with their past misdeeds.
When Nori teaches the Stranger some words, she begins with “migration.”
They wander, and as their way is now the Stranger’s way, this continues to add evidence on the ever-growing pile that the Stranger is Gandalf the Gray, arriving in Middle-Earth an age earlier than Tolkien had him arriving.
Gandalf was known as the “wandering wizard” and of the five Istari, was the only one that we get to know who never planted roots anywhere. Saruman settled at Isengard, and Radagast stayed close to Rhosgobel. Tolkien wrote that the Blue Wizards went into the east with Saruman and were never heard from again, so who knows what happened to them.
Gandalf learning about wandering and migration this early on makes sense, because that becomes his way of life.
It isn’t an easy life, as we know that Gandalf is no stranger to trouble. Nori introduces that concept to him in this scene as well. The Stranger doesn’t seem to know what “death” is, which would track with him potentially being a Maiar, and he has no idea that he caused the death of the firefly. The way he reacts to this makes it clear that it was an accident. He is not in full control of his powers.
“To make something dead” as Nori puts it, is the opposite of life. That’s the ultimate “parting” in many ways. There’s also the parting ways of good and evil, and many characters in this episode who think that they are good prove to be anything but. Characters that are scared of what they could become are a different story.
The Stranger is worried that he himself is “peril” but Nori is certain that he’s anything but. The Stranger struggles to understand the concept, showing that, for now at least, he has a simpler mind than many others on this show.
To smash the Gandalf hammer even more, this shot of Nori and the Stranger looks just like this shot of Gandalf and Bilbo from the third Hobbit movie.
We haven’t mentioned this theory yet, but it’s going around so we’ll do it now. It’s not ours, but it’s great all the same. We’d bet all of the money in your wallets that the wheels on the Harfoot carts [will eventually become the doors to Hobbit holes. They are wandering now, but they will eventually settle. Their wheels keep them in motion, constantly moving from peril… eventually they will become doors to keep the peril out, and yes that peril includes the Sackville-Bagginses.
Poppy got the song that she sings from her mother, who was left behind. Her singing as the group travels ever, ever on evokes many of Tolkien’s own traveling songs.
The theme of wandering once again comes up often in the lines of the song, which is probably the most beautiful moment that the show has given us thus far. The final line of the song also happens to be right from Tolkien.
In the book The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf includes a few lines of a poem in a letter to Frodo, intending the lines to get Frodo to trust Strider. The poem is a reworking of an older work of Tolkien’s, which he updates to start: “All that is gold does not glitter, not all those who wander are lost.”
It is revealed later that these lines were written about Aragorn by Bilbo Baggins, so theoretically Bilbo could have taken that line from this older Harfoot song. Gandalf’s use of it could also now have a deeper meaning. The last lines of the poem are spoken by Arwen in the movie Return of the King. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Who is your favorite character on the show so far?
Durin he is great
Elendil.
I really love Durin man
Nori
Durin and Elrond 💖
“Somehow Palpatine returned” gets me every time.
I laugh every time
the word "somehow" is so full of meaning in that line
I love that this channel keeps making fun of how dumb RoS actually is.
No one is really gone.....
When in doubt, "the dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities, some considered to be unn-natcherel"
This host needs to record audio books. His voice is awesome. And I agree that Elrond is being lied to about the mithril to get him to break his oath.
I assume you're speaking of the dog.
😉
@@kennchooch9744 Doug’s voice is pretty awesome lol
Amen. Your voice is incredible sir. Thank you for filling in this week. Salute
We know this now
@@edwardspray5930 we know the stuff about mithril was a lie?
When the Harfoots yell "you cannot pass" as Nori and co get to the front of the caravan with Gandalf, I got goosebumps
Which ....happened not - did you see the Episode 5? Was awesome, I start to love it and got goosebumps.
@@bavariancarenthusiast2722 LMAO!!
Also, Isildur doesn't defeat Sauron, Sauron is defeated by both Elendil and Gil-Galad, who both die in the effort. Isildur just cut Sauron's ring finger with the fragments of Narsil, broken under Elendil's body (which was heavy, since the dude was 7 feet tall)
Think of it - how powerful Gil Galad and Elendil had to be to defeat Sauron wearing the One
@@Hildigis well, considering his status as a High King of the Noldor, Gil-Galad could be at a level similar to Fingolfin (who battled Morgoth himself) and Elendil is equally as strong or skilled as him
The vs doesn't happen in the movies but I hope we get it in the show
That wasn't in the movies. So if people don't read they will never know.
@@SailorDoggo you do see a glimpse of it in fellowship in the openiing sequence. When the Orcs charge against the last alliance if you pause and look at the top screen, you'll see a cluster of golden noldor elves charging (this could be when gil Galad charged with his company to trap the elves.. What we don't see is both of them fighting, sauron killing gil galad, lifting his body and setting it ablaze infront of the elves..
However all this happens AFTER Gil Galad gifts Vilya to Elrond and Narya to Cirdain,. Which is why i don't think the mystery man is Gandalf, because when gandalf arrives in middle earth, Cirdain recognizes him and gifts him Narya to help him in his quest.I wonder if he could be Saruman? I can't help but wonder if the rings of power have already been created and we see the elves work to create the three elven rings of power?
High King of the Noldor is more of an honorific Title that passed from the House of Feanor to the House of Fingolfin.
Frankly I believe that Elves in 1st Age were much more stronger. This is a recurring theme in Tolkien, everything slowly decline and fade.
Unfortunately this series took this concept and banized to the point of ridiculous: Elves need to bath in mithril to regain strength. I think many fanction are far more creative and educated in their absurdities. This is also reflected in the total absence of aulic language and pathos by this 1-click-buy Amazon Prime characters. There's nothing of Tolkien's beauty and mastery of languages in this ill conceived work.
Anyway, thousands and thousands of years after the duel between Fingolfin and Melkor I expect Gil-Galad to be extremely powerful and skilled, but not necessarily as much as the son of Finwe.
It's also true that Tolkien wasn't really concerned with our contemporary notions of "power level" "tiers" etc.
I loved this episode. I can't get enough of the Dwarves and anything about their lore and homes. It's so good.
I want MORE of the dwarves and Khazad-Dum. We haven’t seen nearly enough. I hope in season 2 we get more.
14:14 The Stranger is saying "envinyata", which in Quenya elvish means "heal".
It would be really helpful if the captions actually bothered to say this.
@@elketerbentzadik it's much better to keep it a mystery but for those who like to search easter eggs
@@ThomasGallinari And this is helpful to those of us who use captions how exactly?
@@elketerbentzadik if you're partially deaf I admit you have little chance to find out
Hmmm why does The Stranger know Quenya??? 🤔🤔
"Somehow Palpatine returned.."
🤣🤣🤣 gets me every time!
I have a feeling Adar's plan is to trigger Mount Doom to blockout the sun.
Your theory bolstered by that explosion at the end of the preview for the next episode when the Numenorians are standing in the SouthLands village appearing victorious?
So they'll fight in the shade.
Yeah this is definitely the plan imo
That Orc did say the tunnel was complete, maybe a lava flow or to help erupt MT. Doom but i totally agree with you bro.
Yes. Only to be taken out by Sauron, who is waiting in the shadows to claim his realm and legions
up untill 2 episodes ago nobody, not even the elves, knew that the Orcs were heading for the watchtower. Halbrand has been away for at least some weeks now and he knows exactly where the enemy is going...
Possibly, because he know what exactly his people may do. Maybe just a prediction that his people may go there to seek refuge, and that refuge may soon be chased after by the Orcs.
sus 😂
Still loving these videos, even though you're on vacation ❤️ I love that you have a great community willing to help out when you need it! Go Screen Crush.
Ryan is just an actor, he does not write the videos, nor (likely) owns the channel.
That part where the Mormon missionaries left Numenor was startling!
Brian Silliman is awesome and part of one of the greatest podcasts on Star Wars: Return of the pod!! (Captain Buzzcut made me laugh out loud)
Love the content doug,👍
We can all agree we need an episode of Doug telling us the easter eggs of any show
Along with a Doug shirt in the Merch Shop!
Nope… I want a whole story arc of his growth as he secretly plots to take over the whole show.
No thanks. That voice would make me click off within 3 min.
No. The voice would keep me from watching.
This was an excellent and insightful recap! And it clarified a few things that had puzzled me. Thanks.
Excellent breakdown. Great voice for audio books. 👏
Nori says something great in the 3rd episode "This is how we keep up with the others. He helps us and we help him" which would be a great foreshadow with how the Hobbits work alongside Gandalf to keep up with the other races to survive the war of the ring
At this point I’m pretty sure The Stranger is Gandalf. And I’m pretty ok with this, I mean, they’re changing so much of the lore as it is, but this would be one of those welcome changes imo. Gandalf is a fan favorite and being able to see him young and in this stage of his life played by a new actor is exciting. We shall see!
The maeglin connection fits with me, his father developed galvorn, a hard, light, black metal which matches what Adar is wearing, the silmarillion talks about maeglin learning from his father and bringing the knowledge to gondolin, or perhaps the armour Adar is wearing is the what's left of his father's.
Yes I really want that to be Maeglin seeking his father Eol's sword, which 100% fits the appearance of this sword (black, glows like fire, responds to blood, and broken.
The mithrill thing is probably a manipulation by Annatar who's already in Eregion tricking the Elves (yes I know Gil Galad doesn't fall for Annatar in the books, but that might be a change for the show).
That's what I've been thinking
Gil-Galad has probably got his info only from Celebrimbor who is taken in. Maybe when he does meet Annatar, he'll figure it out. Annatar is avoiding GG bc he knows GG will see through him?
Very good substitute this week. nicely done!
Thanks so much for this excellent breakdown. Brian did a great job. I really enjoyed it. Loved how connections between the Peter Jackson movies were made. Please keep up the good work.
I still think there's a good chance the Stranger is one of the Blue Wizards. In later writings Tolkien settled on them arriving much earlier than the others, in the Second Age, and that their activities in the East led to Sauron's support there being less than it would have been otherwise. Perhaps they're also blue because of some intimate connection to water/ice, which while never mentioned by Tolkien would stand to reason considering how Gandalf has an intimate connection to fire, and would explain why the flames around him weaken, even fireflies, and also the water/ice healing of his arm he did in this episode; that could've been the reason they chose to don blue robes.
Only problem with this is that Pallando and Alatar travelled together
Tom Bombadil
That's what I was thinking.
@@MakinaMakinaMakina I mean, there are seasons enough to introduce him later.
@@wjr4700 It goes completely against the writings we know of either blue wizard though. Then again, not much of the show seems to be too loyal to Tolkien's work
Thank you so much for uploading 😁😁😁
Excellent as usual. Thank you.
My vote is for Brian Silliman to continue these Ring Of Power recaps. His voice is amazing!!!
Beautifully Put Together 😊
Brian, great narrative. I find your pacing much easier to follow and easier to understand...hope you become a regular
So many references in this episode! Poppy's song (which was amazing, by the way) with "Not all those who wonder or wander are lost." Also Poppy (?) saying "What madness drove them in there?" when they went into the forest. And also the conversation and dialogue between Pharazon and Kemen, "I never thought you'd take orders from an elf". Also distant shot of orcs marching by firelight toward their destination, like marching out of Mordor
Thanks for filling in!
Thanks, Brian! Doug, we look forward to you one day gaining the confidence to do one on your own! :)
What an amazing breakdown!
Great work! Love the dog.
Great voice, Brian!
Durin"Give me the meat and give it to me raw"Elrond"Well I never knew you felt that way about me"
i've enjoyed this show so far. but the first 4 episodes felt a lot longer than 1 hour. this is the first episode that just flew by. i was sad when it ended. very good episode
Same. Now I want more finally. The first four felt like work.
In the Dagor Dagorath is not Manwe fighting Melkor but Tulkas, with Turin delivering the fatal blow.
Who would've known that this stinky Italian city would be relevant one day
Facts.
Well executed.
Hope Ryan is okay and that he’s enjoying Vacation!
Adar will get rid of the sun by awakening Mt Doom
This makes sense
@@wjr4700 Yeah the watch tower is most likely the future Mt Doom. Adar will awaken it with the sword.
@@baz77a Mt Doom is more north of the tower. Not sure if the tower its self has anything to do with it or if its just the key hes after.
Props for the use of Garak
That Captain Buzzcut line made me shriek out loud. You can fill in for Ryan any time !!!!!
This dude be the voice that we need in every post movie/series Easter Eggs. Lol
Great job, Brian! I think the new characters are called The Mystics, as there is a song by that name on the soundtrack.
BRAVOOOO REVIEW!! AND YES -- Seeing Galadriel I board the ship… feel like Gimly!!!!!
Brian Silliman did a helluva job 👏🏽
Elrond is definitely being manipulated by Gil Galad. There's no way the Elves need Mithril to save them, Celebrimbor just wants the Mithril.
This would make Gil Galad partially responsible for disturbing Durin's Bane
Maybe it’s the Westworld experience but I’m wondering if we are dealing with different timelines.
No because the meteor was seen by all.
@@marcgoldstein2957 couldn’t there have been multiple meteors tho? Possibly at different times. And we are only shown the landing of one?
Bear McCreary's score was hitting particularly hard in this one and man alive...that Galadriel scene was triumphant!
I think the "other head to crown" line from Halbrand could be pointing to Isildur, and Gondor. It technically isn't the Southlands but Gondor is next door to Mordor.
Adar being Sauron is still a plausible theory because Waldreg calling him "Sauron" is basically calling him "the abhorred" in elvish translation so Adar would be insulted by this name
I missed Ryan 😢 but I am really glad he took some time off. He works really hard. He deserves it. Mr. Silliman you did a good job. 👍🏽
Yes. Yes you are a good boy, Doug! The bestest boy!

I am really enjoying this series I’m looking forward to when Balrog appears.
I like Ryan's breakdowns but this dude did a really really good job
That's what bros are for ✊🏽🤙🏽✔️
Those Numenorean(spelling?) Smith's sure do work fast making perfectly fitted Elven armour.
one of the three that are searching the landing sight on the thing that looks like a shield has the same consolation that the stranger is looking for
Good. I came here to comment this!
Gotta say, I'm a total nerd for the Silmarillion and the Unfinished Tales and I hope we get and Ultimate or Brotherhood style alternate version one day.
But... the performances are engaging. It took me a while to remember Benjamin Walker from War Boys and he is intense. It's nothing like I would have pictured and that's cool. Elrond is presented more like a D&D half-elf and that is wild. Like, nobody could call you peredhel at work, these days.
So, it's fun. Put an asterisk on it and have fun!
I really liked the episode for sure.
So he just didn't mention the symbol on the white clad peoples shield, its the same as the constellation that the stranger showed them
Thank you for the positive review. I have come across so many videos that just crap all over it. 💕
Because it is crap
Isuldurs sister so deep I see a spin off where she stares at many different places and people
I really loved this episode.. the artistry is just astounding. As a musician who covered the song in this episode, I think Tolkien would be super proud of what has been achieved here 💚
Doubt
@@dusted9117 Yep, definitely mashing that X button here.
Wow that Hobbit hole theory with the wheel = the door is MONEY!
Something has just occurred to me. If Halbrand was driven out of his land by Orcs, why is the Numenor storyline happening at the same time as the Southlands one? Arondir and the Elves had been watching the Southlands for a thousand years, and there were no Orc incursions until they were leaving...so how did Halbrand end up on a ship fleeing Middle-Earth? Unless...and hear me out here; this isn't perfect, but it's just popped into my head.
We've been assuming that the main four storylines (Galadriel/Numenor, Bronwyn/Southlands, Elrond/Eregion, Nori/Harfoots) have all been occurring concurrently. I've been thinking they've been compressing the timeline, and it's introduced some weirdness, such as the Stranger hinting at being Gandalf, but a thousand years too early, and such.
What if they're not concurrent? What if they're *shown* concurrently, but all occurring at different points in time, like The Witcher series? I need to think this through more, but I'm wondering if this solves the issues...
Thoughts from the Hive Mind?
It's a interesting idea - but unfortunately the starfall is a shared event that ties them all together. Additionally, the reason the elves were leaving Ostirith is the Gil-Galad has declared that the enemy is defeated (although I am a little suspicious about how quickly they got that message...)
@@adamhardwick9143 - good point, re: the starfall. I'd forgotten that the others had seen it. There goes my theory 😀
@@philiponeill6903 there could have been multiple star falls over the years tho right? I don’t know if all wizards fall from the sky when they appear but there are atleast two blue wizards and the stranger could still be one of those two, leaving a second comet as a possibility.
@@calebmahoney2448 - my general thought has been that the Stranger is likely one of the Blue Wizards, until I thought of the time-jump thing. But the thing that still nags me is the obvious "eye of fire" reference when the Stranger first appeared.
@@philiponeill6903 they have played some fairly dark music during some of his scenes too. But I kinda feel like that’s them trying to throw people off the scent.
I totally believe that we haven't seen Sauron yet and probably won't for the rest of the season, except maybe for a small scene at the end when the forges are finished.
Also, I feel like Celebrimbor's plan initally to make medallions, or similar, for all elves, but as the forges are finished, Sauron will decieve them into making the rings of power as a way to spread the "light of the eldar" to all elves, and along with those of the drawves and men that will spread to all of nature. But men will fall to the One Ring and thus allow darkness to endure as Galadriel and Gandalf say in the movies.
Also, I believe that Adar will ultimately win and take the sword. Possibly the battle(s) in the Southlands will leave the land even more desolate, since the area will become Mordor. When Adar gets the sword and "ascends" he will cause Mt. Doom, or whatever it is named now, to block out the Sun so the Orcs can be out at all times.
I can't help but wonder if the elves wonder where Arondir and his company are. I mean, they were asked to leave the tower and go back home. But most if not all of them were captured and killed by the orcs. Surely somebody must be waiting for their arrival. But nobody seems to be concerned about them not showing up.
Me and my boyfriend were watching this episode and he said something that really did stick with me. The helmet that the numenorian soldiers are wearing incredibly resembles the ones the Rohan use in the LOTR films, specially the "tail". Would it be because they were under Gondors reign (the descendents of numenor) so they would wear similar helmets?
They are descendents. The trees.
The Rohirrim are not decendants of the Numenorians. The tails comes from the horses that the Rohirrim, and these Numenorians centers their armies around. Numenor wasn't particularly known for their cavalry in the books but cavalry makes sense in the context of Numenor's armies being substantially mightier than any men in Middle Earth.
I am so glad that you are taking a vacation and I hope you are enjoying it!
This host is good but a bit long winded, just some constructive criticism!
One thing really bothered me. Calibrimbore Says that he tested the mythrill? Where did he get it if elrond has just found out about it?!🤔
Someone else said Galadriels ring is also made of mithril and I don’t understand how either. But there might be some lore from the first age I’m not aware about and some of the mithril could have been found prior to the dwarves settling in that mountain.
Durin gave Elrond that small nugget of mithril in ep 3 or maybe 4 I forget. That’s probably the piece that he tested
@@rogermoreno1152 That's what I thought but then when they're having the conversation they show elrond still holding it
Brian!!! Many Boats.
9:49 this is the moment that convinced me the “tall stranger” was the first incarnation of Gandalf the Grey. Told you I was entertained by this series. 😎
14:48 In the background, the trees seem to be swaying unusually, might be something.
Am I the only one who kinda understood that the Southlands storyline was in the past and tha it's actually Halbrand's origin story? Halbrand might be Theo.
no way beacuse next episode you will see halbrand, elf, and regent with the tower people and theo
Damn this is the best summary I’ve seen
The Stranger is giving Saruman energy also he kinda of looks like him. Also the Eleven ring Galadriel wears is indeed made of Mithril
That's what I told my friend last night. It's too obvious it could be Gandalf, and saruman was a good wizard at one point....
He could be a blue Wizard which gives them more leeway to write what they want.
How does Galadriel have a mithril ring already when they haven’t mined the ore? Or am I missing something?
@@calebmahoney2448 I don't think she does
@@calebmahoney2448 none of the rings of power have been made yet! They were all made by sauron remember (by his hand or the help of elven smiths I believe). my guess is they'll create the elven rings first, maybe even by the end of this season.
I love the rings of power and so does my family. Thank you for keeping your videos and reviews unbiased. It gets annoying trying to find videos on the show that aren’t Tolkien extremists just shitting on it.
The helmets of the Numanorean cavalry closely resemble the riders of Rohan.

The Harfoots are attacked by Wargs which I count as a different species. I liked the design in The Hobbit more. Those truely looked awesome.

The helmets look like a mix of Gondor's and Rohan's helmets (or Eomer's at least). All the mentions of this "Horsmaster" make me think the Numenoreans will split and form both kingdoms. The horsemaster being Eorl.
This would be very wrong, the Eorlingas were middle men who didn't side with the Valar, not high men from Numenor.

Yes, thank you. Halbrand as well for that matter. They were both washed up and stranded on their raft. Maybe Halbrand made his own armor but there is no way he was able to forge Elven armor in Numinor.

The suggestion is that part of the "Southlands" is Mordor. If that's the case then could the elf watchtower become Cirith Ungol or Barad-Ur?
