  • The team behind Amazon's The Rings Of Power decided to post a scathing Twitter statement, denouncing what they allege is poor treatment of the cast by Tolkein loyalists... Is there any truth to those claims? Or is this just an attempt by Amazon to deflect from negative fan reviews?

@No Stop I had to give up even 'aghast-watching' with the blatantly anti-white, misandrist scene on the raft, where two white men don't want to allow Gladdy on the raft and a woman of color intervenes to allow her on board. The racism made it simply unwatchable, and that's before getting into the anti-white racism that is race swapping, which assumes all white experience is identical and thus unimportant and replaceable, the kind of thinking that is the foundation of all racism.

They make it sound like racism was never a thing in Tolkien's writing. The entire reason the Fellowship was significant is because none of these races wanted to work with each other. Literally one of the first things they did when they met to discuss the Ring was to hurl insults at each other. Elves hate dwarves for being greedy and selfish, dwarves hate elves for being arrogant and self important, and they both hate Men for being somewhere in between the both of them, and Men hate them for the same reasons they hate each other. Legolas and Gimli's whole character arc was about them overcoming their racism. Part of the reason Gandalf chose a Hobbit to carry the Ring was because they were detached from all that, they didn't care about ancient rivalries or resurrecting their dying kingdom. They just wanted to do the job and go home. There was no chance they would try to use the Ring for anything other than what Gandalf wanted them to do

There's also an off hand reference to an Ethiopian soldier in one of the legions at Hadrian's wall. In southern Europe, blacks and Arabs have been ever present thanks to close trade relations. Even one of the Norse sagas mentions a Jarl who marries a Mongolian woman. Interesting fact about that, the saga describes that the first children she bore him, twin boys, were "brown and ugly, like their mother." He was away at the time they were born, and expecting her husband would be angry when he saw that neither of the children looked like him, she gave one of the boys to a blond slave girl in exchange for her own son. Unfortunate that Amazon is making everything regarding The Rings of Power about race, but they started the ball rolling by making everything about race. Their casting decisions were based on race and gender. So it's only natural that the audience would take notice and weigh in on wether it's appropriate to hire actors that may not fit the various roles. Thats not racism. That is criticism. Everyone has the right to criticize what they deem that may not be faithful to Tolkien's vision. However. Regardless the diverce cast, the show is still a poorly written poorly acted and directed series.

Even though most fans would have watched an 80% POC cast if they were Haradrim from the lore. They could have even made a case for a black dwarf from the South, but they didn't even try. It's crazy right? I have a theory I believe pretty strongly in. It's a combination of financial greed (Bezos wants to win a streaming war so he has to have big name properties like LOTR), and the need to be seen as PC. Amazon treats its warehouse staff pretty bad (and half or more of those staff are not white), so to be PC they have a policy to ensure 30% diversity (this is documented). From Bezos' position, it's all just about having the right appearance while they try to get market share. I don't think this is his 'crusade' - it's just about money. But for the showrunners - it's more serious. Some of them believe this woke stuff no doubt, but I reckon others are also just toeing the line, because they bet it will get them jobs, since Hollywood is totally on the woke bandwagon.

The races of elves, men, and dwarves (ESPECIALLY the elves) were described very...specifically...in terms of certain aspects of their appearance. Saying the "hurr deee durrr der wuz difurant races!" is incredibly disingenuous and a very poor excuse for forced diversity. It's not the same thing as shoe-horning in "color" into races without any explanation or foresight into why they're there or why they exist in the first place.
You could explain that a darker complexion person came from Harad, but even then it wouldn't make any sense because there's no indication in any of Middle-Earth's history that there was much, if any, cross exposure of those differing cultures and even if there was it would be considered A VERY BIG DEAL AND WOULD BE TALKED ABOUT IN GREAT DETAIL!
Tolkien did mention the Harfoots as having a *slightly* darker complexion but that's comparing them to the Fallohides who were compared often to the Elves and were extremely fair-skinned so trying to pass them off as black still doesn't work (And don't give me that bull that Harfoots aren't hobbits, they are one of the three categories of Hobbits mentioned by Tolkien himself. That's like saying that a great-dane isn't a dog, it's just a great-dane).
That doesn't mean that POCs can't enjoy LOTR, that doesn't mean everything needs to be all-white all the time. It would make sense in fantasy worlds like GoT or TES to be more diverse, even in a fantasy like Harry Potter, I just hate when franchises lean WAAYYYY too hard into the diversity thing (looking at you Hogwarts Legacy, never realized 19th century Britain was so...colorful) and it's super obvious why and that they're just shoe-horning stuff in where it doesn't belong or takes me out of the fantasy.
If there was a fantasy epic based on South or West African folk-lore (which would be really interesting to see as I don't think anyone has ever done it before) it would completely take me out of it if a random white person or asian chick just popped up out of nowhere with no explanation. It's the same thing.

In ethical debate ad hominum arguments are always seen as a bad thing, that is arguments of the form:
"You only say that because your a so and so."
What I find interesting, is how often these are employed.
Rather than addressing a person's argument, it's much easier just to cry "racist", or "sexist", and hold that as the reason for any criticisms, since obviously if a person is simply a bigot, their criticisms don't mean anything and don't need to be addressed.
This quite aside from the fact that by employing the massive moral force of an accusation of racism or sexism, two seriously nasty things; at least in their actual forms, you also prompt people to stand up and defend you who otherwise might not, simply because they are strongly against! racism and sexism.
And the ultimate irony of all of this, is that by accusing everyone of racism or sexism, you actually cheapen the very point and meaning of the concepts of racism or sexism in and of themselves, which will ultimately have a knock on effect.

Like, if they wanted to really to be diverse, they would have more of them, at least as background characters. The fact that there's just one breaks the suspension of disbelief, as well as pointing out the obvious tokenism of having just one character of color for the sake of having the character of color. I won't even get into the fact that closed societies, like the Dwarves in Khazad-Dum for instance, are going to be a homogenous color simply through the fact of limited breeding potential.

I know what you mean. I actually think they did it because of pressure to be politically correct. Imagine: this company or Amazon approaches them and says "hey will you endorse our thing stating inclusivity with money going to a diversity type charity?". If they say no, and it's publicised they said no, they'll be branded as racist, and that'll make it (even) harder for them to get work.
Also note - while Amazon publish this as if to say "the original hobbits approve of the casting choices we've made".....the only thing the T shirt ACTUALLY says is "all are welcome". Which could be taken to mean 'all types of people are welcome to watch, welcome to be fans'. Not 'all types of skin tones will be found in every race in Middle Earth'. It's a small distinction i know...they have to at least _look_ like they are being supportive. But Elijah expressed concern in an interview when the Amazon show was announced. Right now, he may just have to keep up appearances.

But what do you expect from what’s essentially an online superstore? To not be intellectually devoid of any creativity? To not swing their pp around quantifying quality in dollar amounts? That’s all they know how to do. They say they’re trying to help people relate? Ok Amazon, name one relatable character from the first 3 episodes. They just don’t know what they’re doing because the production itself only has profits in its sight. The same thing that forced the Hobbit from a watchable and fun 4 hour movie to what it became.

I managed to get all of ten seconds into the show before I gave up in disappointment.
Do you remember the bit in Amadeus where Salieri writes a march to welcome Mozart?
Mozart sits down and plays it through, from memory after a single hearing.
Then plays it through again, and then stops, says "wouldn't it be better if we did...", makes a minor change, and turns something that was rather plodding into something delightful.
Episode 1 opens with a black screen and background music. The music was clearly inspired by Howard Shore, but written by someone with less than half the talent.
By the time the second phrase was half done, before any image appeared, I turned it off.
Was it because I am a racist? I don't see how. I've actually defended racial diversity in LOTR. There are, after all, three distinct groups making up the hobbits, with different histories, different characteristics, and different skin colors. There are seven clans of dwarves, and multitudinous groups of elves and men. If the director decided to cast Blacks as Harfoots or Asians as Ironfists I'd have no trouble with it, provided that the characters were interesting.
But I gave up before I saw a single character, simply because the background music was tedious.

I just think of the endless opportunities they could have used by casting POC from Rhun and Harad. Told uncanonical stories from the region and make them travel outside and showcase the discrimination due to how others would often look at them as evil. That wouldn't be on the nose and they could even write in a group of them as heroes in their own uncanonical stories.

Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it.
It began with the forging of the Ring Of Power series. Bad Script were given to the Tolkien Fans, Commoner, wisest and fairest of all beings. Diversity to the series, great dialogue and backstory of the Prime Video. And new, New Actress were gifted to the Series, who above all else desire fame. For within these Series was bound the strength and the will to govern each show. But they were all of them deceived, for another Series was made. Deep in the land of Amazon, in the office of Amazon Company, the Amazon forged a master series, and into this series he poured his Diversity, his Racist Issue and his Ban Review to dominate all life.
One Series to rule them all.
One by one, the free lands of JRR Tolkien fell to the power of the Series, but there were some who resisted. A last alliance of JRR Tolkien Fans and Commoner marched against the Amazon Prime Video, and on the very slopes of Amazon Rating, they fought for the freedom of Original LOTR Trilogy. Victory was near, but the power of the Series could not be undone.

They knew which actors to lavish with acclaim for various reasons while giving table scraps to another, though never damning this second group. They knew which projects to ignore, which to review but not exactly uphold since they had other projects in the queue to push forward since those careers were a priority at the time.

Wanna see a good incorporation of black people into Lord of the Rings? Look at the Middle-Earth: Shadow of War game. Amazing game, first of all, and includes Baranor, a Gondorian that was born in Umbar. Initially a slave following a raid by Gondor, he was adopted as a son by a wealthy family in Minas Tirith, and became a Captain of the Guard. That's a major deal, and he's black. I never once frowned upon him; in fact, I thought he was one of the coolest characters. He had a background, he showed his worth, he was fun. On the other hand, I disliked the character of Idril; she felt kinda flat and like she was there just because she was a woman. To her credit, she acknowledged that she wasn't the best soldier and was there to do her duty since her father was a general, if I recall correctly. Even so, she didn't feel like she fit in. Baranor fit perfectly, because he was well developed and deserved his spot.

There are no black dwarves - the closest potential candidates would be one of the four clans that dwelt in the East, in the areas of Rhûn or beyond. Even then, those dwarves have no note of having an unusual skin tone, and they are all still noted as dwelling underground. No black dwarves underground unless they're covered in dirt.
Umbar, on the other hand, was a region south of Gondor, near the coast. This, along with Rhûn, was where you were most likely to see darker-skinned men. The Men of Rhûn resembled moreso our Mediterranean and Middle Eastern skin tones and cultures, while those of Umbar would be more akin to those of North Africa. There are black men, and while generally in territories hostile toward Gondor, some of those Men were a part of Gondor, and some did very well for themselves (such as Baranor).
