Rings of Power Episode 1 - HONEST REVIEW | Lord of the Rings on Prime

  • Hello friends and foes of Middle-earth and welcome to this first breakdown of Amazon's Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Episode 1. In this review I'll go through some of the worst things in the episode and talk about some of the many issues this series has. At the end I'll give scores for various elements like story, lore, cinematography, dialogue, acting etc.
As many of you know, I was not that optimistic about the show and many of my fears were confirmed as The Rings of Power seem more like a fanfiction than a faithful adaptation of Tolkien's works. One thing that surprised me though, is how boring the Rings of power is. For the first time in my life I found Middle-earth boring... Watch the whole video and perhaps you'll understand why!
    [!SPOILERS!]
In this video we will discuss Galadriel's voice over, when she's a child in Valinor and her brother Finrod's advice to her. The dialogue could be better and they seem to forget to name characters.
Finrod is killed by Sauron and Galadriel starts her personal vendetta to find Sauron and kill him - not the most interesting plot (but it gets worse).
Her story is interrupted by annoying Harfoots - not hobbits, but Harfoots. They are childish, weird and in many ways very different from the hobbits we know from The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The third story line follows the silvan elf Arondir stationed in 'The Southlands', an early name for Mordor. Here he keeps an eye on the local humans, whose ancestors served Morgoth.
As you probably can imagine it's not the most interesting or dramatic storylines to follow. I'll try and dive into some of the issues and even suggest how one scene with the cow could have been improved.

Okay, to all the haters in the comment-section claiming Amazon can't name him Finrod, because it's not mentioned in the appendices (aka what they have the rights for):
    Appendix B, The Second Age:
"In Lindon south of the Lune dwelt for a time Celeborn, kinsman of Thingol; his wife was Galadriel, greatest of Elven women. *She was sister of Finrod Felagund, Friend-of-Men, once king of Nargothrond, who gave his life to save Beren son of Barahir.*"
    Please read the appendices...

I did some rough calculations: Their journey did take around 16-24 days, depending on their speed. With the speed of a small professional marching army, it would have been around 16 days, but I doubt they would have been in such a hurry. They were probably on a cozy journey, so it would take much longer. (Assuming they started from Eregion, and not Lindon.)

Finrod: Do you know why a ship floats and a stone cannot? Because the stone sees only downward. The darkness of the water is vast and irresistible. The ship feels the darkness as well striving moment by moment to master her and pull her under. But the ship as a secret. For unlike the stone, her gaze is not downward but up. Fixed upon the light that guides her, whispering grander things than darkness ever knew.
Galadriel: But sometimes, the lights shine just as brightly reflected in the water as they do in the sky. It’s hard to say which way is up and which way in down. How am I to know which lights to follow?
[Finrod whispering] Sometimes we cannot know until we have touched the darkness.

It began with the forging of the great films. Threads were given by Tolkien, wisest and fairest of them all. Rights were then given to Jackson; great miner and craftsman of the mountain of lore. And nine, nine hours were gifted to the race of men, who above all else, desired quality. But they were all of them deceived, for another show was made. In the land of Amazon, in the fires of Mount Prime, the Dark Lord Bezos forged in secret a master flop. And into this show he poured his malice, his greed and his will to dominate all film. One show to ruin them all

Finrod was my favorite character in the first era, for several reasons. His loyalty to men, the way he treated them when he found them, his conversations with Andreth, him honoring his oath to Beren, the sacrifice etc. I think he’s the one who should have returned to Middle-Earth, instead of Glorfindel, but that would have caused major issues, since he would have precedence over Gil-galad as the high-king of the Noldor.
The TV show version was bland, and his “philosophical” chat with Galadriel about the rock was weird and made no sense.

Except we didn't see Easterlings in either episodes. Bronwynn's people are referred to as Southrons, but they are located in the lands east of Mordor, which admittedly, are shown as the "Southlands" on the map in this episode. Easterlings come from Rhun, far to the north of Mordor. Haradrim and Southrons come from the deserts of Harad, south of Mordor. Also, remember that the cultures and peoples we see in LotR are 4,000-5,000 years in the future from when RoP takes place. Easterlings and Southrons may not exist in the way you've seen them in LotR. Though Easterlings are mentioned in The Silmarillion, that's likely to be referencing ANY men from the far east of Middle Earth, before Mordor was claimed by Sauron.

There's nothing more frustrating for me, as someone who really doesn't care about the lore or woke controversies, than being dismissed for thinking the show is bad because I've been brainwashed by the haters. Sorry. I've been a movie fan for many decades, almost half a century, and I know what I like or don't. This series has terrible story telling. I've contrasted it with House of Dragons, which is also only at two episodes and much better. There's so much we can say about the character of Rhaenyra Targaryen because we've experienced it. A precocious, rebellious young child who is somewhat at conflict with what is expected of her. We can say this because we witness her actions with dragon riding, intervening to stop bloodshed, speaking up at council out of turn, all of it. Galadriel on the other hand is hollow. We are told who she is but we don't get to experience why she's like that or how she is like that. Even when they do try to show us part of her, the famous troll scene, it's still uncertain what we're supposed to take from it. This isn't a slowly evolving plot; it's empty plot.

What don’t you get about Galadriel’s grief stricken anger and sadness that fuels her hunt for Sauron ? She wants to find him and defeat him to make Middle Earth a safer place. Didn’t you get that when she talked to Elrond about her motivations ? She’s far from hollow and empty. She is incredibly resolved and head strong. Don’t you understand where her courage, determination and hope stem from ? Would you be so harsh of her if she was a man ? C’mon now, she’s a warrior. Female elves can’t be warriors now ?
What about the plot don’t you understand? There’s a clear progression for everyone. Elrond, Nori, Galadriel and Arondir have clear plots that progress not too fast, not too slow.
There’s mystery, there’s intrigue, there’s a sense of something huge is going to happe. They’re going to create the freaking rings ! They’re gonna fight Sauron and his orcs. There’s gonna be alliances and betrayals. Danger, death, etc.
How about the son of Bronwyn who discovers the sword with the mark of Sauron ? What about that plot line that you don’t understand?
A lot of criticism that read from people like yourself are biased, bland and hollow. Grow up. There’s nothing wrong with having black elves and dwarves. Nothing wrong with a warrior Galadriel.

…it nearly infected me reading enough of the depressing comments it’s ruining the show for myself and others now just hearing it.
there’s different styles of telling a story game of thrones is wanting the characters to be transparent because we need to know her feelings when her family put her down, she wants her father to know she’s upset, because she wants to be the heir, that’s her motive to gain power. In the rings of power Galadriel wants to please Gil galad she doesn’t want him to see her emotion of how she doesn’t want to pass into valanor because elves are a proud race, she would never show weakness. this is basic stuff man?, put it this way morfydd Clark as an actress would own that kid in thrones, so it’s obviously deliberate mystery in the rings of power. But its bandwagoning because its contradiction after contradiction , every film is technically fan fictions it’s an idea from the mind of a fan of the original adaptation. Im even saying this to myself now if your going to watch a show you need to remember your reviewing that show, not the books, otherwise you can give blade runner, the shinning, the hobbit, Mary poppins, every marvel film, Nolan Batman films all a 0/10 because none are inline with the source material no comic adaptions except the DC animations have been based on a solid book. But the weirdest and most gross thing I found was the love interest of Arondir and Bronwyn, a complete grooming act from his part. The show itself to me hasn't gone so far with this two episodes as for me to say it's just bad, but it definitely has already suffered quite a bit from bad writing at times. Galadriel being the only one to think Sauron's still there but agreeing at first to go to Valinor only to jump right in the middle of the ocean... I mean, latino elfs are nothing compared to shit like that. I actually don't dislike some of the new characters, the visuals and some more stuff but I can already see GOT season 8 levels of crap showing up. My bets are the show's gonna be quite average as just fantasy, but that it's slowly going to flop as we get to the big events on the later seasons. The production is amazing and blablabla but they always insist on changing lots of stuff and bringing unexpirience people in the writing department to such delicate projects.
Also just hated Galadriel, they gave her a sword to make her "STRONG" and it ends up being the oposite. She just puts on a straight face and says everybody's wrong except for her. Just your 1.1 Hollywood's empowered strong female character. I also bet we don't see the slightest bit of doubt nor failure in her. I don't like the actress that much but why wouldn't they give her a sword and and show her strong? They didn't make her strong, Tolkien made her. She is one of the most powerful elves and is described as "Amazonian" so ofc she is strong and she fought in a lot of battles if I remember.
But the show has definitly one big problem. They can't use the real backstories and the real lore because they don't have the rights to do so. They only have the rights for Lord of the rings and Hobbit + the footnotes to them and not the Silmarilion which is where the show should take place. So I guess they will do tons of stuff out of the official Tolkien lore because they don't have the rights to use the real stuff. Lets just say I don't have high hopes but remember:

If the Rings of Power wanted to include people of color they could have done so easily and sensibly by weaving their stories into that of Numenor's. It was a global empire, would have interacted with many cultures and it would have been logical to assume that it could have also assimilated many diverse people into it's political and economic system. Numenor also probably would have had many client kingdoms in the south where all manner of subterfuge and intrigue could have taken place between multiple houses contending for the throne. The Elves could have been sidelined into a sub plot in the north and the focus been on the greatest kingdom of men (and women) to ever have existed. As it stands now, the whole thing just looks silly. Black people with welsh accents in a medieval type setting is as strange as watching a bunch of white guys dressed up like Zulus at Isandlwana. This isn't a myth from China the Middle ease or Africa, it's a European mythos and should be populated with people of European descent. That said, other races should be included and as main characters too, but done so with artistry and thought and as a distinct people with own stories to tell not just thrown in because of some Hollywood quota and with no thought to genetics. It's almost as though the writers didn't think black people could have a story of their own that was worth telling.

The closest excuse I can think of is that he had already foreseen his doom like he did in the book (albeit at a much later point), but if that was the case, he would have had a clue something terrible was about to happen, and would have warned the rest of the Elves to expect trouble, surely? She is very "humany" so to speak. I think whomever wrote and/or approved scenarios simply did not understand how elves work, or decided it would be to unrelatable, so they changed them in pretty much everything but name.

The first, most fundamental mistake they have made is that they started with the Second Age. There is so much back story in the First Age which would've been so much more interesting and would've created the base for future seasons to build on, without dismissing its importance and expecting the viewers to know all about this and understanding exactly what they are watching. Melkor's transition into Morgoth, the migration of the Valar and Ainur to Middle Earth, the creation of the Silmarils, Ungoliant and the destruction of the two trees, and MOST IMPORTANTLY ... the rise of Sauron.

      @kevinmcguinness1113 Před rokem

@@mrp4242 that's kinda my point ... the decision to go ahead with this project without access to the source material was a fundamental error on their part. Showing no respect to and carelessly trampling all over the canon was ALWAYS going to alienate Tolkien fans (of which there are millions worldwide) in favour of wokeness and inclusivity.
I would suggest the Tolkien fan base * SHOULD HAVE * been their prime target demographic, but they chose otherwise, and it's going to cost them dearly.
Peter Jackson had set such a high bar with the LOTR and the Hobbit trilogies in terms of expectation and this, sadly, comes nowhere near. I'm sure it may get better, but it may already be too late to rescue it. I can't see how they can realistically stand behind their commitment for five seasons. It now becomes an exercise in damage limitation.
The sad thing is that because this shambles and the amount of money required to make a PROPER version, I can't see that any other organisation would have the balls to attempt it again, and unfortunately, in that case we ALL lose out 😪, because it is such an epic tale that deserves to be made - properly 😉

It is super weird that Galadriel basically does some grave robbing on her brother. Talk about disrespectful to the dead. He was clearly put there with the knife in his hands but nope she's like "hey bro you ain't using that knife let me just take it for a bit."
Yeah the haircuts really bother me. Way too modern looking. An elf in the middle of nowhere is not going to care about his looks. He would naturally just let his hair grow out and only cut the front with say a knife if it annoyed him too much. What you think warriors cared about appearances? Hell no. Yes in older times the richer or higher in society a person is the more they care about looks but they didn't often cut their hair but put them in fancy hairstyles or have a servant braid them etc.

What made the music so great in the fellowship was that you knew where you were based on what you heard. For example, you get that homely feeling in the Shire, then they play that same theme whenever the hobbit's reunite. You get that anxiety when frodo understand that Sauron is always watching and looking for his ring. You can feel that tension whenever that particular theme plays.
With regards to the rings of power, although the orchestration was amazing, I just did not feel like it was on par to what I described. Your description of how the events drove the characters, rather than the characters driving the plot, that explanation also best describes the music. It felt cliche and sort of like a diluted version of what I remembered from the original trilogy that this show seems to copy. Nothing really felt memorable.

Excellent and helpful review. I was very dissapointed and couldn’t stomach finishing even the first episode. Critical mistakes in character development, common sense, and basic stagecraft. The series appears to hinge on Galadriel and they made fatal errors in judgement regarding her character. She is thoroughly unlikable and I’m not motivated for her to succeed at all. Hence, my failure to finish watching episode one. How can I have any confidence in Galadriel if her military unit first warns her and then justifiably abandons her? Furthermore…why would they want to fight with her if her skills are so advanced that she dispatches that ice troll with such minimal effort? There is no fellowship here of any kind. When I then discovered that Galadriel jumped ship in the middle of the ocean then and “swam” back I knew my decision to abandon the story was the right decision. I just don’t have time for such drivel. One last note….the harfoots are sure to annoy even as they are portrayed as endearing. I fear they will become a cross between Ewoks and Jar Jar Binks from Star Wars lore in the end. The worst thing that can happen to the lore is a “cute” factor to gain an audience.

Thank you!! Finally a lore channel doing a lore based review. Pretty much all my favorite lore channels we either schilling or towing the Amazon line. 3 things that keep me from even wanting to watch this are the 21st century tropes they are forcing down the viewers throats. 1. "Speak your truth." Insert eyeroll. That is the most annoying 2022 thing people are saying these days. They just had to throw that in didn't they? 2. The "black" elf settling for a single mother and the fact that they needed to make the fact that she is a single mother a thing at all... 3. And, the stupid bullying thing. Seriously?? Isn't Guyladriel supposed to be some kind of royalty? Why would she be bullied? This is an absolute nitpick but. The short haired elves. What is it with them wanting so many elves to to have crew cuts. Don Lemon the elf looks like he gets faded up at my barber. I recognize the lines. Whenever i see Elrond i only ever see a cross between actor Colin Firth and Neil Patrick Harris when he was Doogie Howser MD. The elves in the LOTR cartoon looked more like the harfoots than these elves looking like hobbits from the live action LOTR movies.

Captain Marvel had the same story and also the lead from Star Trek Discovery, just to mention to other characters from recent movies/shows.
