Something I loved about Viggo Mortensens performance of Aragorn is that he always looked appropriately scared of the orcs, nazgul, etc. but he fought them anyways because needed to. You felt the energy he was giving, and how exhausted he was.

I mean, the fact that these elven characters are powerful is not something I have an issue with. As massive lore nerd I know these people are incredibly powerful, so them being able to easily take care of things, without much worry is understandable, but also makes them harder too adapt. Which they have sorta failed at.

I feel like the money spent on this series could’ve been split evenly between several other *Smaller* Amazon shows and they’d be better for it.. like instead of spending 700 mill to a Billion.. give some of that money to The Boys or something - cos nothing is really impressive anymore by a CGI location and creatures when they could be done practically.. but that’s just my take.

This so called “modern” movies and shows are just politically correct bullshit… This nonsense of being “inclusive” rather than respecting history and culture is just another form of assimilation and racism. Inserting characters of color into white stories and historical pieces are just another way of saying “you guys are the same as us and can be just like us, just as white as we are”. White stories should just be white, like Snow White should just be a cast of white actors, does nothing sound remotely wrong about calling a black person white? What has happened to us? Being inclusive doesn’t mean ignoring differences, it means respecting and accepting them. We are all different, with different genetics, backgrounds and upbringing. We are limited in the people we can become and that’s ok. If ppl are actually inclusive they would be making historical and cultural accurate movies and shows based on minority stories with a full on minority cast and not just remaking white stories with minority casts. There are so many interesting stories from all the different cultures around the world that would be amazing if made into films or shows, but they just HAVE to focus on the cliche ones and keep remaking them because that’s easier. When can we actually have culturally, historically and source material accurate entertainments…

The perversion of the Elves I think is their most flagrant offence, something obvious within the first 5 minutes of screen time. They are portrayed no different to humans, not immortal beings with a foot in both the seen and unseen. There is no mystique, no maturity, no cadence in the way they walk, talk or fight. Galadriel in particular was butchered, Kate Blanchet's performance was a good attempt at constructing the divine feminine. She was wise, mysterious, warm and fiercely intelligent. If they wanted their strong female lead so badly all they needed to do was take inspiration in her performance in the original Trilogy and even The Hobbit, in which the scene she confronts Sauron and the Witch Kings gave me goosebumps. Instead they do the exact opposite, by casting a 20-something woman with the posture and maturity you'd find in a teenager, eyes set retribution. She is seen as weak, immature and combative. The casting in this show is an aberration, even in contrast to the original Trilogy that was packed with solid actors, that fit the roles well. It hurts man, Hollywood is a fucking soup kitchen.

To write an ultra-powerful badass well, they need to care, especially about the “little guy”. Levi in AoT, for example, is introduced (aside from people calling him a badass while he rides out) in a scene where he casually kills titans without his expression ever changing…then he immediately goes to a dying soldier, holds his hand, and gives him words of comfort in that his death has a purpose, all while emoting heavily (which is atypical of his character). This takes him from being some badass to a badass we care about (we care about him because he cares about everyone). It also means that, even if he seems invulnerable in battle, he can still be hurt. All this is done in a way of show, don’t tell, which is particularly important when dealing with emotion and motivation of a character.

Levi kills the Titans and is covered in blood, he remarks how disgusting it is and starts cleaning his hands with a handkerchief. Then right after, he goes and talks to the soldier who's about to die, and holds his hand, covered in blood. The biggest issue with this show to me is why did they feel the need to have FOUR different story archs running at the same time from the beginning of the show? If you ask me, a lot of the shows issues can be traced to this one decision. Its like they're trying to stuff everything in at once because "well its Lord of the Rings! We have to have it!"
No. We don't need the hobbits finding "maybe, maybe not" Gandolf. We don't need the story about the village over seen by an elf garrison that conveniently comes under the treat of attack as soon as the garrison is lifted. We really don't need whatever it is they're doing with Galadriel. I mean why even bother sending her out to sea as if you're going to build some big tension decision? We KNOW she's not going. She'd be better off more directly involved with the central plot that I assume is the creation of the rings. As it stands we have too many stories going on at once. Its impossible to get truly invested in any of them. Yes, the LOTR movies and GoT both had several arching story lines but both actually built to that instead of doing it episode 1. LoTR had the fellowship where all the main characters were together, interacting with each other all the way up to the Fellowship breaking. Then, they went their own ways. Yes, GoT had Dany separated from the rest of the cast doing her own thing. However, aside from that, all the other characters were interacting with each other, establishing themselves before branching off into their own archs. Here in this show we have a bunch of strangers that now all need to be developed separately if we're going to care about them. With only what, 8-10 episodes to tell 4 different stories, its pacing is probably going to be all over the place. Its one of the reasons I can't get into The Expanse despite rave reviews for that show. Ditto for The Witcher. I'm tired of having to follow 3-5 different plot lines in one damn show because modern writers have a "quantity over quality" approach to story telling.
TL DR. The show is trying to do too much at once to its inevitable detriment.

When FOTR came out in 2001, I never heard of Tolkien at all but I’m a young Kiwi living overseas, missing her homeland and heard it was filmed in NZ. So a bunch of friends & I went to a late night session. From the moment Galadriel’s voice over started, I was literally transported into Middle Earth, like my soul flowed into this world and I was utterly absorbed. It was not until 3/4 in, when Gandalf decides to risk a little light in the Great Halls of Khazudum, that my heart literally skipped and took my breath! I almost wept at the sheer beauty of that scene, so much so I turned to gasp & share the moment with my friends… only to find EVERY SINGLE ONE (7 of us in total) ASLEEP 😴 it was then that I realised I was the sole person who had completely lost track of time and hung on every word & scene, right to the end. To this day, the most powerful & emotional cinematic experience I’ve ever had. Have read all Tolkien’s work multiple times sense.

Any retelling of this masterpiece that is even remotely mediocre.. I can’t. I won’t. In fact, I’ll rewatch FOTR to reminisce on how a masterpiece of literature and film swept me away with characters rich with depth and themes so meaningful like friendship and selflessness, it made me weep openly. I'll always be baffled by reboots, sequels/prequels, and adaptations that completely set out to undo a lot of what made their predecessors so iconic. I admire creative choices that force viewers to re-evaluate their perception of pre-existing characters, lore, or events.
It's become more clearer which creative teams/writers genuinely respect their predecessors AND push the boundaries (e.g., Red Dead Redemption 2, House of the Dragon, Better Call Saul) and which are merely set on creating THEIR OWN version of established IPs (e.g., Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, a good chunk of any animation/manga live-action adaptation) -- while simultanesouly depending on their predecessors name to get audiences engaged.

"You only hate her because you're misogynist." Not in those exact words, but alluded to. It's absolutely ridiculous that the political spin the media have pulled is a blinder on people so much these days, that you can't be legitimately critical over important things in entertainment, such as bad writing and depictions of characters. Some Tolkien specific channels like Nerd of the Rings (who channel from their first video was about Amazon’s series) are obviously sellouts. Other are so puritan regarding Tolkien’s lore being a white European mythology that they don’t want diverse casting (I don’t think these people are racist, because they are correct about Tolkien’s intent to make a British mythology, but they are definitely unreasonable in some extent as it’s ok to bend some rules in fantasy sometimes to allow viewers find relatability), and then there are others in the middle where they just seem so desperate to cling onto the idea of visiting Middle Earth on screen again that they willfully blind themselves to the glaring issues with the show.
It’s tough to say which perspective is best as starting point, but putting aside all the politics that Amazon started by accusing fans of being racists, the show just isn’t well put together, and Jeremy is one of the only large reviewers pointing that out.
