    I keep watching peoples reviews on these films and noticed nobody ever talks about Sir Christopher Lee, his talent or character in these films. He plays an important part in these films and I'm wondering if people actually know who he was as an actor. Just recently he passed away and I also noticed not many movie reviewers paid tribute to him. He was on stage and screen more than any actor and was well known for playing villains. It would be kind of nice to see people who have love for movies show respect to one of the greatest actors that ever lived. For all great actors. Just wanted to point that out.

    I actually would put Fellowship somewhere among the top 10 films ever made. It's almost flawless, but at the other end of the spectrum it is perhaps the most indestructible demonstration of cinematic craftsmanship to be put on film. It's like a Rush song. It starts off as a fantasy epic with the prologue, beginning its endless world-building spree, which then turns into a horror-chase movie, which then takes more time to breathe and establish lovable characters, which then becomes a team-up adventure movie, which then becomes a last stand "escape the death star" type movie (with extortionate threat and pathos, and two wicked boss battles and a massive character death), which then takes more time for emotional relief (because Jackson knows what he's doing, people) and to set up things for future instalments and further establish Middle Earth itself as a character to love and fear for, followed by a white knuckle ride into a heartwrenching climax that sees key characters realise beautiful arcs and the adventures to come set up perfectly. It's 6 movies in one, with 7 big bosses (Sauron, Nazgul, Saruman, Watcher In The Water, Cave Troll, Balrog, Lurtz) and such inventive action interspersed with timely and necessary moments for respite and character-building. The acting is spot on. The writing is wonderful, with so many beautiful lines of dialogue, and the sprawling text masterfully forged into a compelling narrative. It's such a densely detailed yet beautifully simple film. Very few things come close to the scale and vision, nor to the astonishing directing prowess displayed by Jackson's greatest moment. It's astonishing.
    And I don't need to say "It's only my opinion". I have reasons beyond personal taste to call this film one of the greatest of all time.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the whole trilogy, but Fellowship for me is hands down not only the best LOTR movie, but one of the best movies ever made. EVER. No other movie in the trilogy, at least in my opinion, truly immerses you into this fantasy world as perfectly and completely as Fellowship. It is the only one I watch regularly, and I'm always amazed by the feeling it leaves me with after it's over. It's sad, beautiful, intimate and mesmerizing, often all at the same time. I would give it a 9.7/10. The only reason I didn't give this a 10/10 is because I thought there were a few questionable moments in the movie, but those a very few and far between. This shouldn't be considered an opinion, it should be considered fact, anyone who hates this movie need to wipe the shit out of their eyes and do not deserve a negative opinion. This movie is fucking amazing!

    Love these movies so much. Lol. For me the only versions that I can watch anymore are the extended editions. They just bring so much more by way of storytelling and additional plot information that really make me love and appreciate the pure talent for film making that Peter Jackson has. Plus those extended editions work together to make my all time favorite book to film adaptations. Brava Peter Jackson. Brava.

    • @walterkovacks1266
      @walterkovacks1266 Před 9 lety +2

      Will James I only give them that because they have no character development for characters that were in the book, (i.e. the Dwarves and Beorn) and yet invent unnecessary character's that are pointless.
      Also a 6.5/10 is an okay movie. That's what the Hobbit movies are. Okay.

    • @w-james9277
      @w-james9277 Před 9 lety

      Walter Kovacks No character development, Thorin and Blibo are the main characters and we get lots of screen time with both throughout the whole trilogy. We also get lots of screen time with other important characters such as Gandalf, Bard, Balin, Filli and Killi. The rest such as the other dwarfs aren't as important so they are rightly sidelined.

    • @walterkovacks1266
      @walterkovacks1266 Před 9 lety +1

      Will James Thorin was done well, and giving Bard more character was a good idea, though the whole, lake town politics scenes in Desolation of Smaug were stupid and pointless. Bilbo did have good character in the first Hobbit movie, but in DoS and Battle he got sidelined a lot. He was still important, but he wasn't really the main character.
      Sidelining the dwarves makes sense if you are only making one Hobbit movie. But at the end of three, three hour long movies, we should know all the Dwarves characters and personalities really well. We should care about each of them, and not just Thorin, Balin and FIili. Think about this. At the end of Fellowship, we knew all the 9 members really well. We new their characters and cared about them. The same should be for the Dwarves. Also, if you are going to sideline them fine, but don't add on characters like Legolas or Tauriel and Alfrid, (who actually got more screen time than Gandalf in Hobbit 3) and not even give half of the Dwarves a line.
      Also, THEY STILL RUINED BEORN! AWESOME CHARACTER IN THE BOOK GIVEN A CAMEO! MAKES ME SO MAD! FUCK YOU PETER JACKSON!

      @uncertaintitle1176 Před 7 lety +2

      Sauron, Gandalf and the Balrog are all Istari (Basically, angels) and when an Istari goes bad, they lose their ability to change form. Sauron was stuck as a "Dark Lord" figure, and the Balrog kept its menacing form. Gandalf and the other wizards were all Istari sent to Middle-Earth to fight Sauron, since there was no way the elves and humans could fight him alone.

    • @uncertaintitle1176
      @uncertaintitle1176 Před 7 lety

      As in, why is he the only Istari fighting them?

    • @uncertaintitle1176
      @uncertaintitle1176 Před 7 lety +4

      Okay, so "Istari" describe the wizards. The name of their race is "Maiar". Just had to clarify that real quick.
      And angels don't change form when they go bad; they slowly lose power. Changing form is one of their powers. So while Saruman was in human form, he couldn't change back. By the end of the book, Saruman pretty much has lost all of his power entirely.

      I genuinely disagree. The Two Towers is the best. It's a fantastic blend of fantasy and war. The stakes are really mounting. Saruman is coming into his own. The urgency and tone of Towers is unmatched.
      Merry and Pippin are no longer dead weight liabilities and finally play a significant role in the story, tricking Tree Beard into dropping them off at Isengaard, knowing that only when he sees the waist lands will he go to war.
      Themes of death and mortality and genocide are also explored and the battle at Helms Deep is incredible, big but not so big as to lose its sense of intimacy. The perfect battle. Towers also feels, by far, the most real and grounded out of the three. Castles, villages, etc. all real and on location.
      AND I haven't even mentioned the interplay between Frodo, Gollum and Sam. And then Faramir later on and whether his loyalties are with Frodo and his quest or with his father Denethor. Just so much going on.
      Fellowship is great but at the end of the day it's just a very beautiful ABC road trip with dope skirmishes. Towers hits the ground running and the plot becomes much more complex and interesting and Shakespearian.

      Godfather 3 was bad so it is not a good trilogy. But if you count the first two it is definitely an awesome dilogy. So it doesn't qualify. :(

    Here's a detail for you when the fellowship enter Moria and find Balin's tomb, Ori's skeleton is leaning against the tomb still clutching his book. Ori-(one if the dwarfs in the hobbit).

    Those last few minutes, I was near tears just nodding with a stupid smile on my face. You're so passionate about the trilogy. I love you, you nerd!
    I get that phase every few months where I just watch the movies and feel so much regret for neglecting them. Best trilogy ever! The music totally makes me tear up. Especially the hobbit theme, Concerning Hobbits, I just feel so happy when I hear that.

    My ratings of the extended editions:
    Fellowship of the Ring - Awesometacular
    The Two Towers - Awesometacular
    Return of the King - Awesometacular
    An Unexpected Journey - Awesometacular
    Desolation of Smaug - Worth Buying on Blu-ray
    Battle of the Five Armies - Worth Buying on Blu-ray
    BTW, I thought the theatrical cut of Battle of the Five Armies was just bland, but the extended version was hard to get into, but the last hour and a half of it was great and was basically an hour and a half of the barrel scene from Desolation of Smaug.

    Jeremy: can’t wait to see that in the hobbit, it’s gonna be bad ass

    the hobbit trilogy was an unexpected disappointment...😭💔

      Disagree, I think the hobbits are pretty damn good. They’re a bit bloated and rely a bit too much in CGI, but incredibly entertaining.
      Jeremy agrees with me, too.

      @@iambuhlockay8007 Oh ok...they're bloody awful and about as far away from what Tolkein was trying to say as you can get. And please don't mention the CGI and the slapstick jokes...uggh

    Watched this review of Jeremy’s in 2020 bc I recently rewatched the 4 hour extended versions of the LOTR trilogy. Wanted to appreciate how I feel the exact same way about the greatness of this movie even after all these years.

    Fun fact: when Gandalf and Balrog fall like thousands of feet in to the lake there is some freaky shit down there. Even gandalf said "there are more foul things than orcs in the deep" that wasn't mend for Balrog alone because Balrog which you say "tip of the iceberg". Dwarfs wore SO greedy that they dug up hell itself.
