  • Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power honest reviews are out about episodes 1 and 2. The media embargo for Amazon Prime Video has dropped and now the truth is out. Entertainment Weekly has hyped up LOTR: Rings of Power for months only to now call it a catastrophe! With more reviews coming from the general public in the next few days, and the full release soon on Amazon prime video. Can Rings of Power ever succeed when these are the first opinions of its fans?

    The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power honest reviews are out and they are FAR worse than I ever expected. Critics normally fawn over this stuff just like they have on rotten tomatoes, but even Entertainment Weekly who have marketing Rings of Power for MONTHS ripped it apart. What do you think of the reviews so far? Did you expect they would be this scathing about the first 2 episodes of Rings of Power? Let me know your thoughts down below, and as always, thanks for watching :)

      The EW review blew me away and its a hilarious brutal burn (everyone should read it), but it did gain the publication some credentials with me. Despite all the access and flattering Amazon laid on them, in the end, when it was time to do their job, they did. BIG burn and wish other large media would follow suit. Daily Mail was another.

      I personally think they are starting to read the room and are getting out in front of it. If it fails, they want to blame it on anything other than them being disloyal to the source material and hostility toward the fans, and are planting the seed now.

    The World has changed, I feel it in the water, I feel it in the Earth. I smell it in the air. It began with the forging of the great books. Ideas were given to J.R.R Tolkien, immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Film rights were granted to Jackson, great miner and craftsman of the mountain of lore. And nine, nine hours were gifted to the race of men, who above all else, desire quality and honesty. But they were all of them deceived, for another show was made. In the Land of Amazon, in the fires of Mount Prime, the Dark Lord Bezos forged in secret a massive flop. And into this show he poured his money, his malice and his will to dominate all shows. One show to ruin them all, one show to bind them, in the Land of Amazon where the shadows lie.

    Peter Jackson, interviewed in GreenCine December 2002: "There are certainly themes Tolkien felt were important. We made a promise to ourselves at the beginning of the process that we weren't going to put any of our own politics, our own messages or our own themes into these movies. What we were trying to do was to analyze what was important to Tolkien and to try to honor that. In a way, were trying to make these films for him, not for ourselves."
    Lindsey Weber, Executive Producer of Amazon's "Rings of Power", interviewed in Vanity Fair February 2022: "It felt only natural to us that an adaptation of Tolkien's work would reflect what the world actually looks like."
    I think, that tells it all.

    The Lord of the Rings was deeply rooted in Anglo-Saxon history and mythology. Tolkien was a professor of Anglo-Saxon history and had a deep love and knowledge of his subject. He stayed true to the roots of this culture and that is where the magic lies. European folklore is in our DNA and that is why Lord of the Rings was so stirring. Messing with this ancient blend of history and mythology strips it of its authenticity and as a result its magic.

      Galadriel is stated to have taken part in a number of wars and fights, and often well-before he could make much use of her ring. I've seen the arguments and references, and the best we can say is they're unclear. She was there in SOME capacity inarguably. She is also described many, many times by Tolkien as athletic and valiant. Which of course isn't the same as 'handy with a sword', but she is also described as joining in with physical games and contests in her 'youth'. And she is thirteen hundred years old.
      I will happily grant that she probably never focused to any great degree on swordsmanship, but when you have thirteen hundred years that's a lot of time to pick stuff up. Galadriel is not going to be some wilting flower when some guys want to have a fencing match... she's rather obviously going to want to join in. She is universally described as wise but not afraid of combat and involved in combat, so that pretty much does necessitate some familiarity with arms and armour, because charging into combat with NO familiarity is FOOLISH, even if you are really wizardy. And remember that Gandalf himself was handy with a sword. It's not alien to wizards to learn such things.
      Occam's Razor seems to suggest that there's scant evidence to suggest she's a 'warrior queen' the way the Amazon show wants to depict her, but also scant evidence to suggest she 'never touched a sword' as others want to claim. The truth is almost certainly in the middle. I'm sure she spent a few years learning swordsmanship (and a few years isn't much to an elf), just as she probably spent time familiarizing herself with bows, daggers, and anything else her troops would be using. If nothing else, she is described as a commander and wanting to lead a people, and a wise commander would understand the capabilities of her troops and be able to hold her own in the back of the army if not the front.

    Great points! Limiting diversity can be a good thing! I feel like the homogenous races of Tolkien's Middle Earth actually ADDS to the adventurous and epic feel. We are dealing with a limited amount of lands and their history. It only makes sense that their races would more or less be characteristically limited in variety. The same can be observed in ancient mythological and religious texts. The Greeks used themselves as the reference point, and explained their sorrounding neighbors secondarily---showing a limited view of the world. The same can be seen even in something like the book of Genesis, wherein chap. 10 the families of the sons of Noah are enumerated. Obviously, the natives of America, the aborigines of Australia, heck---even the vast populations of the Far East are not reckoned up in Gen. 10.
    In both cases, it is obvious that there were MANY peoples who an ancient Greek or Semite was no doubt in ignorance of. And so they aren't mentioned. So it is with Tolkien's world! The less we know about far off lands, the more adventure and wonder can be given to the story. And all the more so since the stories in Rings of Power are supposed to be events much, much older than the events of the trilogy proper. It would make even more sense for the various kingdoms to be even more isolated and more or less homogenous.
    Finally, I think it's important for STORY and CHARACTER---and everything concerning those---to be the main focus. Diversity for its own sake isn't bad per se, but adding diversity soley to appease modern expectations only diminishes a world as carefully crafted as Tolkien's. A lot of people complained about Angrboda's appearance in the upcoming God of War: Ragnarok. But it's quite obvious that her darkskinned appearance is a subtle set-up for Kratos and Atreus eventually heading to Egypt in future titles. Her appearance ADDS to the world. It subtly hints that she isn't of the Nordic lands and keeps the intrigue of Kratos and Atreus' next journeys in motion. I feel like diversity can be good. But It can only be "good" for the same reason ANYTHING in a story can be "good"---when it ADDS and seasons the story with the flavor of cleverness. Everything in good writing should aim toward that---telling a good story. If the world is already crafted like Tolkien's, then show respect for the life that he breathed in it. Diversity has it's place; and that place isn't everywhere.

    • @_.Lucifer_Lightfall._
      @_.Lucifer_Lightfall._ Před rokem +6

      @@inspirepeace2547 No, it isn't bad. Not at all! It isn't a matter of good or evil, it's a matter of representing someone else's work properly. Adaptations change things all the time, so it just depends on motive, really. And if the motive is to make a wider audience more comfortable, then sure. I don't personally see the need to arbitrarily alter things, but that's just me. It would be like taking the Epic of Gilgamesh, making a live action movie about it, and for no explicable reason Gilgamesh is white with icy blonde hair. Is that bad? No! But if it's written that Gilgamesh lived in Shurripak, a city full of violence, on the banks of the Euphrates---then why suddenly make a movie that changes the setting and appearance of the characters without any sensible indication or reason for the changes in-universe? Change for the sake of change? I mean, that isn't bad at all... but I would more so call it unnessescary and pointless----especially if the changes are purely cosmetic and add nothing to the story!
      As a POC myself, I understand the reasons why some would want to change things but I also think it to be more powerful to let lands and cultures be what they are----ESPECIALLY fictional ones that do not have the same politics and issues that we have in reality. We can be different and alien from each other in habits and preferences, and still get along---whether this skin or that skin is represented or not. For me, I would say the same thing if the actors were Native American or Southeast Asian, etc. Many fans have a lot to say about non-racial character changes too. Galadriel being a warrior, for example. Which is cool, but a lot of people would just prefer a faithful adaptation. Why advertise cookies n' cream and then serve strawberry?

    Spot on review. Personally, it isn't good when you wish Galadriel HAD drowned in the sea. Galadriel should be the most intriguing, compelling and awesome character but I couldn't tell you one thing she said in either of these first two episodes. If forced to choose, I would say Arondir is the most interesting character at this point- and he's not even a Tolkien created character. That says it all. BTW, there are classes online and at universities that will teach you how to write things like a storyline, dialogue, etc...just saying. But I will keep watching, maybe even perform a sacrifice, in hopes it will get better.
