I think back to Gladiator, the first scenes show Maximus showing sympathy for his men and explaining how they are weak and hungry and deserve home. @iwonder1216 Před rokem +122

I've struggled to define this. So here goes:
The problem with diversity casting is that it's so blatant. The actors' qualities become more important than the actual character. So you become hyper aware of the person instead of the character. It's like a break in the 4th wall, or a mistake missed in post production. It has the same effect on the viewer. It makes the viewer self aware and takes them out of the story. The purpose of casting a black elf is a mechanism for others to see their likeness in characters better. It has nothing to do with the story and everything to do with the viewer. So the viewer becomes hyper aware of the actor, in a good or bad way.

    • @Oversight85
      @Oversight85 Před rokem +12

It's the entire issue with all types of affirmative action - when I see a certain person in a certain situation, how can I have faith they fully earned it, instead of being elevated for other reasons. And in entertainment, yes, it's incredibly distracting because you have preconceived notions before even starting the movie/show.

I really didn’t care if there were black elves, dwarfs, etc. although I didn’t really see the point in it. The biggest problem was that the writing was just awful and these actors were simply not good enough. Look at the trilogy, it had Ian McClellan, Christopher Lee, Cate Blanchett, Vigo Mortensen, Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Andy Serkis, Sean Bean, etc. It was an amazing cast of well trained actors, some of which were already huge Tolkien fans. Amazon was clearly more focused on hiring a diverse cast rather than a well trained one.

So many scenes from the Peter Jackson version still give me goosebumps - like the speech of King Theoden (that you showed in the introduction) as he is preparing to ride out, likely to his death, to take the fight to the Orcs besieging Helm's Deep - staggering, astonishing cinema which made you feel raw emotion as it whirled you through Tolkein's Middle Earth. Compared to that, Amazon's $1Billion series has all the gravitas of a sitcom and the emotional charge of an advertisement for baked beans.

I find the part where Elrond and Celebrimbor go to Khazad Dum just so odd. From the shots you can see there is clearly nothing and no one around. It's also clear that they don't have any packs with supplies so basically Elrond is leaving Celebrimbor in the middle of nowhere with no supplies, no shelter and just the grandma dress he's wearing. It's just a really odd scene.
Another thing I find strange is they give you absolutely no sense of time or scale. I'll be the first to admit that Peter Jackson played fast and loose with some things but one amazing thing he did was establishing a sense of time and scale. From the Fellowship leaving Rivendell to Gandalf and Pippin going to Minas Tirith you had a sense that it was a long journey. In RoP everyone is just magically at the next destination no muss or fuss. It's kinda disappointing.

I just LOVE Morfydd Clark's portrayal of Galadriel. She has so many different ways of staring at other characters and doing so in different situations. She has the "I'm so angry" stare. Then there's her, "You're going to do what I tell you to do" stare. And how can we forget her, "You haven't seen what I have what I have seen" stare. On top of all these examples of thespian brilliance, sometimes Morfydd just stares directly at the camera or at something offscreen. I'm mesmerized by her technique.
Some people have unfairly pointed out that in the few scenes that Cate Blanchett appeared as Galadriel in The Fellowship of the Ring, she displayed much more gravitas and charisma than Morfydd has done in the first two hours of TRP. This is, of course, an unfair comparison because Cate Blanchett is an older and much more experienced actress. If I look at IMDB and compare their ages, I see that Cate Blanchett was exactly the same age when she played Galadriel as Morfydd Clark is today. OK, never mind that.
As far as the explanation we get in Episode 1 of why boats float and rocks don't float, I completely disagree with Nerdrotic's criticism. I haven't heard such depth of thought and logical precision of argument since Monty Python explained why witches float in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
There's just so much to enjoy in this show. If nothing else, I think a good drinking game could be created by taking a shot every time Galadriel stares hard at something or every time a woman does something courageous while the men cower and, or look stupid. However, combining those two things might put everyone under the table in a single episode, so be careful.

I'm no deep Tolkien lore buff and I'm not watching this show - but even I can see how heavy-handed this show is being. We get it - Galadriel is associated with water, Elrond with air, (not) Gandalf with fire. Whereas Peter Jackson chose to incorporate this bit of lore with a touch so subtle you would barely notice the motif unless you really looked for it - this show seems to hit everything with a big old dwarf hammer.
Anything that Galadriel says, or has said to her, is to do with boats or tempests or ice and culminates in her jumping into the bloody sea. (not) Gandalf arrives in a ball of fire, emerges from a smouldering crater and plays with fireflies. Expect more talk of "ill whispers on the wind" or "bad tidings in the air" from Elrond in upcoming episodes. Its as subtle as a brick.
This is only one small element (no pun intended) in the writing that I noticed while listening to people review the show - and I'm convinced that this problem, this lack of subtlety, pervades through out. This poor standard of writing is unacceptable and to do it to Tolkien is downright disgusting.

The problem with the 'forbidden' romance between Bronwyn and Arondir is not that it's 'forbidden' (which it's not) or doomed to end in tragedy. It's that every single one of the two times it happened (by the time of the events of ROP) the love between an immortal Elf and a mortal human was fate, tied closely to the Doom of Noldor and the fate of Middle-Earth. It's not rare because it's frowned upon or because elves and people dislike each other, but because it's SO DAM UNUSUAL it literally CHANGES THE WORLD.
Amazon managed to bring the scale down to a mundane teenagers-in-love level, and I could never forgive them for it.
    Or for many things more.

When the Producer states a fantasy show needs to reflect reality, they should be fired on the spot. No one wants to see the hero taking the trash out and folding socks.

Yep, a show set on a different, magical, medieval world doesn’t have to reflect the idealised opinions of privileged, well-paid, 21st century Hollywood-dwelling Americans.

Probably because directors have a personal hatred for what Tolkien represents, he appreciated beauty, nature, harmony and European people and history, these directors want to work against those things, they want to see ugliness, urban cities, men and women split, ethnic and historical replacement,

It kills me how little the elves in this seem like elves. Lol. Like they portray them as useless in battle and stupid. The troll scene at the beginning you see multiple elves just stand there in front of it without moving and let's it kill them lmao. It's so un-lotr it's sad

I get what your saying but tbf, they did just ice climb a mountain. Not exactly going to be combat ready after that even if you have Ainur in your bloodline. Hence why they left her, they were exhausted and had no fight for the cause anymore. I'm just hoping Galadriel becomes a better leader but I think they've written her so single minded atm so she had a character arc

Yeah you are right. In the book Silmarillion there was a big fight outside Angband where Morgoth sent a lot of monsters, including a dragon (Glaurung) and probably a few Balrogs to fight the elves. The elves killed most of them, although in the end thousands of elves died. I'm pretty sure they would have known how to kill one icetroll.

@@thegrayknight71 You are a symptom of both the creator of this video and his fanbase. Stupid, uninformed, racist poser fans. There were never '100' balrogs. it was stated clearly that there were no more than 7 balrogs in the history of the Maiar. You like the rest of this guys following are actually disgusting, bringing down a series which pays homage to people that ACTUALLY READ THE BOOKS to manufacture your own farcical opinions of what happened. the 'elves' did not charge and slay all 100 balrogs, they (5 or so not including those that escaped into the ground like durin's bane) were killed over the course of the great battle / War of wrath that tookplace outside of angband Feanor, described as one of illuvatar's mightiest children was slain by gothmog the lord of the balrogs. Get your facts right. To you and basically every other clown in this thread and the one making the video - shut the fuck up and fuck off from our franchise, you conceded whiny pricks.

@@thegrayknight71 Wait wait wait. Which battle would that be again? Tolkien stated in his letters that Balrogs were so powerful and special(same tier as Sauron and Gandalf), that there were no more than 20. Plus slaying a Balrog was such a big deal, it is noted that before War of Wrath only two were beaten, both in the Sack of Gondolin.
