Italy has the advantage that can produce locally most of the weapons systems it needs, so their production would actually boost the Economy putting back in circle the expense and can be boosted internally if necessary. And as someone else said, italy doesnât need powerful tanks. The alps are are an incredible barrier to pass for heavy vehicles. the only need for tanks is to participate in the defence of our northern allies in case they need it outside our borders. In that case much better to use their same platform, for commonality of spare parts and weapons systems.
Italy also doesnât need too many ground troops. Needs good quality mountain troops supported by helicopters and artillery. The navy and the airforce are the most important. Because if italy controls the sea around the peninsula and the sky above, is almost impossible to take.
Alpine troops are the best of italian infantry... and italy also make best helicopters in the world that works pretty good on mountain landscape. Also boats are self made and we speak about state of the art boats. Simply i don't understand the needing of so many tanks... we should invest on fast and capable artillery and rocket launchers.
About planes i think the eurofighter is better of the f35, the f35 is full of problems and very expensive but still one of the best planes in the world. The only lack of italian army are drones... but i think italian factories will have the know how to make something good. Piaggio made a really good drone, but the prototype get stolen from saudi arabia.
But italian scientist also have knoledge on secret weapons and super advanced tecnology like antimatter.
In case of a big war i think nato has many non conventional weapons that completly change the way of making war.
But i think diplomacy and friendship are better of any weapon.

Yo that Centauro weapons system is no joke. It's actually very impressive
The Centauro it's an old style tank destroyer. It's extremely effective when you have air and technological superiority, or when you are on a lower intensity war situation. It's not a first line vehicle capable of engaging modern tanks in a frontal fight.
The real ace is the Draco AA gun, because it's not an AA gun. The 76/62 cannon is by far the best naval gun in the world in its class, and has a unique advantage, the DART ammunition. It's a radar guided artillery shell, precise enough to hit a supersonic missile at 6-10km distance. The capability in the AA role are comparable to a short range SAM, but every round is about 1/10th of the cost of a SAM, and can be used against land or naval target as well.
It's a unique middle ground between an expensive land based SAM, a short range, cheap AA gun and a small artillery piece. The idea behind modern drone attack is to use something cheap that you can only shoot down with something expensive. The DART shell is the counter: a cheap(ish) artillery shell that can shoot down even expensive missiles from a safe distance. It also has a surprising long range (20+km) and very good accuracy against land target, even if the damage is limited (you can blow a ww1-style machine gun nest, not a fortified bunker).
The 76mm anti armour round should be able to penetrate the ceiling of a armoured vehicle as well, so the guided version (under development) should be able to score a long range kill on armoured vehicles as well if outside recon (drones, helicopter, aircraft, infantry) is available to designate the target.
â@@12garkMaybe the Centauro 1, the Centauro 2 is currently the most modern vehicle in service with the Italian Army and packs a heavy 120mm gun that fires the same types of ammunition avaiable to mainline NATO tanks. It might not face directly enemy tanks but it is capable in dealing with them.
The Draco SPAAG was just a mere prototype made for display by Leonardo years ago, but it never entered service, and probably never will.
I particularly like the 60km+ fire range of the Arty system. For mobile Arty that's a damn good fire range. Did Italy send any of these weapon systems to Ukraine?
@@LNMarls No, of the Draco 76/62 probably exist no more that one or two pre-productiom models while the Centauro 1 was never proposed to be sent.
The contents of the Italian weapons packages to Ukraine are largely kept secret. The few ones that have been confirmed are hundreds of surplus M109L, a couple PzH-2000, a SAMP-T system and an unspecified number of Lince LMVs
To say, the us army started to build massively the Stryker seen what was capable to do the Centauro 1 in Afghanistan. Taking after that 16 Centauro in leasing to train their future Stryker fleets.
If the italian government cared for its people as much as it cares for its military, Italy would be heaven on earth.

Lot of emperors and presidents are second generation immigrants, not talking about legionaries and marines... Why this obsession? The world is full of people, just let them in if you need it!
@@tuccioflowering14 There's a cultural problem, though. Italians are neither like Americans nor Romans. During Roman times, it was fairly easy to convince people that they belonged to an empire and that people from newly conquered regions were Romans too. In most European countries, there is still a stronger nationalistic thought and fear of diversity, often exploited by right-wing populist parties. Even Sweden, likely the most welcoming European nation, is now having "buyer remorse" for all the immigrants, especially Muslims. In Italy, it will be much harder to accept immigrants as Italians and make them feel like Italians, compared to the US.
@@orsobruno1980 I think that the key is the first article of our Constitution: Italian Republic is founded on work, who comes here and works hard is generally well accepted by population. The problems come when someone screams illogically about someone who wants to "steel the Christmas" or "impose us islam and burkas", this misinformation combines with well spread functional illiteracy and creates racism. Italians, historically speaking, are emigrants and used to immigrants from all over the world, we're known for our characteristics all over the world as hard workers, smart businessman and sometimes threatening criminals. What the typical Italian wants from the typical immigrant is hard work, just like our grandparents did. This is the classic "you have to pass through what I passed to obtain my rank", but on a national scale.
@@orsobruno1980 the average Italian considers "Italian" an immigrant that is hard working and speaking Italian. This is what usually defuses hate. We do not need to waste money in Tanks, Italy is a peninsula surrounded by water and with the Alps protecting the northern borders. Also most of the country has difficult terrain with hills and mountains. The Centauro2 is already very good in this environment. We need to invest massively in Drones, and keep up with Air Force and Navy to protect the Mediterranean.
That's the same thought we had in WWII with only light tanks to fight in the alps...it didn't end well. What is going to happen if Italy has to fight outsidethe country?
vero. incredibile che con la nostra manifattureria non abbiamo fatto passi da giganti nei droni.
Despite I agree with you about Navy and Air Force being our two main priorities, it has to be clear that our NATO partners could need help on the ground too.
We should be equipped to deploy up to at least 3 brigades in a potential high intensity battlefield scenario.
Think about our eastern partners needing assistance. Not being able to provide for that, on the ground too if necessary, would definitely undermine our geopolitical weight.
Itâs true, but we have a weak spot on Friuliâs mountains. We only have hills to protect us in the east side, and the east side is the closer from danger
@@thomaspozzatello9602 realistically speaking, no one is going to enter our territory from land borders any time soon.
Serbia is the closest Russian proxy in the region, and we still have a buffer in between. This is not exactly the same picture we had during Cold War.
In terms of âpersonal defenseâ, for us is paramount to be able to deny our airspace and maritime area.
Instead in terms of âexpanded defenseâ, meaning how far away we can project any meaningful military power, allowing us to exert a political role, it is required to have ground assets capable of eventually fighting inside an high-intensity battlefield.
Ask yourself this: if in the next 6/12 months Poland was going to send troops into Ukraine, would we be able to provide our troops to keep a defensive stance on Poland borders (vs Kaliningrad/Belarus)?
If the answer is No, then we need to develop the capability to play that role. And we need to do it fast (next 5ys at most).
Italy has been a strong middle power since WW2 ended. But with their fertility rate dangerously below replacement level I don't see how they could ascend to great power status. If anything they'll have to rely extensively on drones just to maintain their armed forces at current strength
True, I completely agree
We don't need, don't want and cannot become a great power, we just need to be able to defend ourselves if needed. Demographic decline is a problem, though. Reasonable immigration and integration policies should be put in place to hedge the decreasing fertility rate.
Intanto siamo nella top 10 e non abbiamo un' economia che favorisce l' uso militare visto che Ăš l' ultimo dei nostri pensieri, me se prendessimo un' economia militare qua voliamo

Drones, missiles, air defense and submarines are the key components for the next decade.
Drones that cheap are not particularly EW-hardened and are easily countered by relatively prolific and cheap soft/hard-kill EW systems like the American LIDS or air-launched APKWS. They are far from the game-changer everyone thinks they are. The only reason you see them used so often in Ukraine is because neither side has particularly sophisticated (or sufficient) EW capability fielded. That is why it was chosen to not replace the 120mm breach with the one in the Centauro B2.
8:26 the vehicle in the picture is not a B2, possibly an UAE B1 export variant: the B2 is not an upgraded B1 Centauro, but a completely new vehicle with a different hull, engine, transmission and turret.
The Lynx the Boxer (if ever) and the CV90 are no more options: the agreement with KNDS for the Leopard 2 includes a new armoured infantry vehicle co-developed between Leonardo, Iveco and KNDS with Italy as leading program contractor.

Canada rolled Italy in ww2 it was only the SS stationed in Italy that kept them from getting swept instantly.
Italy actually had a top rated navy at the beginning of ww2. Unfortunately they didn't have the resources needed to operate it properly.
I'm down with it if Duce Anchovy is in command. (if you know, you know)
CV-90 is the best, proven in combat in Afghanistan and Ukraine, Lynx has issues that could take several years to get the bugs out.
but Italian Lince protected the crews better then Humvee's, it was bought by so many countries incl. Israel and Ukraine/Russia! the Dardo is from 98, they want replace it, but for any countries this would still be a "new" vehicle!
On the other hand, one is a modern platform with a long development ahead, the other is a older vehicle that is mature but doesn't have a lot of room for improvement.
If you have to fight a war tomorrow, the CV90 is better, but if you have to use it 10 years from now, the Lynx is a much better choice.

The Navy is top and will be even better in few years. The Airforce is good as well. The Special Forces are beyond exceptional. But the army is average.
Very pleased to see NATO members increasing their militaries. A strong NATO is a goid thing.
Why? NATO is just a tool of USA hedgemony. Independent strong nation states with armed forces answerable to the people of democracies is a good thing.

Italys LHD Trieste multirole aircraft carrier, amphibious landing craft and advanced medical ship will come into service this year.
Amazing. What a country!
Whereâs the TMNT van with the pizza đ launcher??
Itâs good that their air force is generally in good shape as far as equipment, and as far as I know theyâre still regular participants in joint training exercises so their pilots flight hours should be pretty decent.
Theyâre probably lacking in logistical rapid deployment capabilities and air refueling capability is a bit low to very low given the number of combat aircraft they have, also no stealth bombing platforms? Leaves a pretty big capability gap, sure the f-35 is multi roll, but canât carry the payload of a strategic bomber , being one of the closer European powers proximity wise to the Middle East and Russia, long range strike capability would be in Italyâs interest wheelhouse

If there's a country that can make modularity work for the ships that's Italy. See their PPA offshore patril vessels Thaon di Revel class, or the FREMM's (the Alpino class chosen as future US Constellation frigate) itself.
Alao for thr land Italy used to make modularity work flawlessly with the Centauro 1 and 2 hulls used also for IFV Freccia.
The LCS wasn't a disaster regarding modularity usage, but regarding the material used. Aluminum for ships it's a big no no since the dawn of times. But someone forgot to say that to us ship engineers that made the LCS.
All we need is Navy, good luck getting drones here without a dominant fleet. If we are investing in Army and Air Force we have something to worry about.
The C3 upgrades are wrong, the LWS, Thermals and FCS are already present, the C2 is going to upgrade engine, suspensions, tracks, transmission, complete overhaull of hydraulic lines to become electric driven, HEAT and APFSDS packages, antimine package and FCS from Centauro2 (already in service). The C3 will have APS and new gun aswell

It's not possibile to compare, I'm sincerely sorry for Canadians, but their Procurement policy it has been, for decades, a very inefficient system.
As for Canadian Surface Combatant program, 15 yet-to-be-seen frigates at a cost of 77 billions. The Italian "Bergamini" class frigates cost no more than 20/25 % of canadian equivalent...

you missed that we launched a brand new aircraft carrier, the Trieste
theres a few errors when it comes to the Ariete and the centauro, the new Ariete isnt called the C3, its the C1 AMV, and when talking about the B2 centauro they used a B1 Centauro Serie 2 or 3 picture (the B2 is a completly new tank).
the B1 Centauro porcupine and B1 Draco arent real, the turrets were just mockup turrets and as of now theres no interest in either of those.
when it comes to IFVs we would have no need for the Boxer since we have our own wheeled IFV, the Freccia, its also likely that we're gonna make our own new IFV, a project called AICS.
Italy didn't lose WWII. WWII ended in 1945. From 1943-1945, Italy fought valiantly alongside the allies.
Yeah cause we surrendered in 1943 and then Germany invaded to form a puppet state in the North and keep fighting the allies in Italy rather then in Austria.
It was most definitely a loss but the real loss was joining in the first place, Idk what drugs Mussolini was on to think fighting with Germany and Japan against the whole world was a good idea.
This begs the question of which Italy did that. The years 1943-1945 saw Italy plunge into a devastating civil war, with half of the territory and the resources siding with the allies and half with the Nazis. Both factions fought one another, with a very strong presence of partisan groups (not always coordinated and quite often actually acting one against the other). All of that, while Nazi Germany and the Allies waged an open, full scale war that swept the territory south to north. Meanwhile, civilian population saw the worst of it. Last point: the Treaty of Paris of 1947 does not agree with your point of view that Italy did not lose WWII.
@scenno Mussolini was never elected by the Italian people. Even when he was PM, the Italian king was the head of state. In 1943, he deposed Mussolini (which he was allowed to do) and appointed a new PM, Badoglio. It was this government of the king and Badoglio that was legitimate, and this government that joined the allies. There was only 1 Italy from 1943-45. Mussolini's Italy was illegitimate.
@@mikesiciliano210 Mussolini was never elected prime minister: as you correctly point out, both under the monarchy and under the Republic the prime minister is appointed (by the king and by the president, respectively), not elected. But Mussolini WAS indeed elected to the lower chamber of the parliament in 1921. In the May general elections, the fascist party obtained a grand total of 37 representatives (including Mussolini) out of 535 seats. So, indeed, a tiny minority came to rule (through violence) over Italy for the next 20 or so years. But this does not detract to the fact that Italy in 1943 was a split nation. Many felt that the king betrayed his role and office, leaving the armed forces with no coordination and no clear orders at a critical time in the war: thus many felt legitimated in their choice to pledge an oath to a German puppet state in northern Italy. Many, simply, never had any choice whatsoever (you could have asked the people in Rhodes, only you couldn't have...). Whatever the claim to legitimacy was, at the time in 1945, the factual reality was that there has been a civil war raging for two years in the Peninsula, superimposed to the more general conflict. The treaty of Paris clearly states in the first paragraph that Italy started a war of aggression, and that surrendered unconditionally in September 1943. It acknowledges that the government and the resistance declared war against Germany, after that (called cobelligerance), but still imposes territorial losses, war compensations and limitations on army and navy: it does not sounds like something a victorious party would take, to me.
They fought very weak and Nazis helped them every battle.
You could almost say that Italy MBT is the Centauro (that's why we have so few Ariete tanks).
The Centauro (in all its versions) is a very capable vehicle, its armament is on par with many MBTs and its armor almost so at a fraction of the weight.
But more importantly, it is hugely more suited for combat in the Italian peninsula than any tank will ever be (with our vast urban landscapes separated by countless hills and valleys).
And not only in the Italian Peninsula, it proved to be so much more effective than regular tanks or tracked armored transports vehicles in a veriety of different environments (from city centers to narrow mountain roads) than after seeing it in action in Afghanistan the US Army wanted its own and started the Stryker program (for which they ordered several Centauro for field study and crew training).
Talks about the centauro, proceeds to show a dardo then goes ahead talking about the b2 centauro and shows the b1... I mean, seriously?
