If the French had had the same budget as the Americans' F35, the French would probably have developed an operational X-Wing fighter
haha surely ^^
Give Dassault the F-35's budget, and they could land on Pluto.

Et on trouverait des bistros et boulangeries dans tous les pays du monde en lieu et place des Mc do 🤣
It is not a surprise that France decided to independently make it's own arms to defend itself after suffering two world wars on its soil. The old saying is if you want something done right then do it yourself.

Title: How Did France Become Military Superpower? France has always been a Military Superpower.
Not during WW 2.
@@richarda996 likely the only time when they underperformed
No we didn't. In the late 90's early 2000's we were just an above-average power. But as said in the video we kept producing our own system of armements, and that's why it's easier for us than most of the other european nation to reboot the war machine. Moscow we're coming :)
Last time France was a super power was napoleon's bonparte. After him the best they can claim is great power status. They sure as heck aren't a super power. In last 30 years roughly only usa can claim super power, and china is on verge of super power status arguably.
@@olivierdomingue6312Franco Prussian war as well. Ww1 they did decent but it wasn't super power level when a good portion of their country was occupied for a large portion of war.
A military superpower is not the same as a major arms exporter.
Exactly. And anyway, it is not our goal. In terms of military power, we will increase integration with European Union. This is the long term policy. Arms export and credibility is part of this integration we look for, but a segment of it. When EU and UK décide joint maritime patrols, it is in conjunction with US decision to decrease presence in Mediteranean sea, Atlantic Ocean and Indian Ocean. USA has a lot to do in Asia right now, so we help as we can and mature our project this way. The goal at the end would be joint patrol till after Singapore. And let’s put it mildly, we are on a fraction of what we aim for currently. Luckily, UK, Italy, Netherland, Poland and Germany understand very well what is at stake and are starting to make things happen. Their are hiccups, since except it UK, Italy and France, most of European navy had a limited training level, but it is rising steadily. We hope to be ready in due time. Sailors numbers have been doubled on French ships, to ensure better availability. Same thing with onboard level of armement, which is rising before our eyes. The quantity of hull though is not fully adequate. And this will take some time to be fixed. Longer than armement or crew training.
💯
When you're the N°1 in nuclear technology, and otherwise can deliver a stike anywhere, anytime, then yes I think that automatically qualifies you into a military superpower.
France has the nuclear deterrence, a permanent seat member at the UN, territories all over the world and military bases and a strong defense ecosystem (missiles, spatial, aircrafts, weapons…)
And France is exporting small quantities of expensive weapons, so it's not even a major arms exporter per say.

The SAMP/T, performing as well or even better than the Patriot
The SCALP/EG

SAMP/T seems to have better interception capabilities but somewhat lower range and ceiling than the Patriot. Both systems are performing very well.

No one doubts that France has high quality weapons, but the question is do they have the industry and the people to support the demand that Russia left behind?
Industry and people yes but it will take some time to raise the numbers, the factory lines have been designed for a "low" production.
No we don't, for example Poland bought the equivalent of Caesar in South Korea as the tender was over 600 units and we now produce less than 80/year...Rafale will be soon 3/month.Still a lot to achieve before we can supply in large quantities.
Investments ongoing, plus new partnerships with India and other European nations to increase capacity, plus French military uses civilian tech for some parts which make it more scalable than american

you're french, arent you?? Only the french would be so pretentious as to think anyone cares about mispronouncing french.
france still thinks they are in the same league as the U.S. or China lol.
Actually we do care. It is a sign of respect. About the league, I don’t know. Someone is powerful one day, weak tomorrow. Balance of power, etc… One thing may be considered though, France is part of the 🇪🇺, which is not so integrated as China or USA, but necessity make thing appear faster than many would imagine. France is more than 1000 years old, with moments of glory and moments of rough times. It remain to be seen if USA or China in the current format will last this long. And if not, what will it look like… The Chinese view on the possibility of union collapse is far more mature than US view, which looks at best unthought. Lately, we are all intrigued by the polarization of US political discussions. We hope it will get better and people will calm down and settled issues, though the divide and impossility of local political changes, lack of dialog is really concerning. Especially for those who likes USA.

Prior to the Russo-Ukranian war, Moscow was in line to become a top client for French arms exports. They were gonna buy 3-4 Mistral Class helicopter carriers. France had built the first two and were almost ready to deliver. The next two would have had significant construction done in Russia, transferring French naval knowhow that Russia lacks. The Kremlin claims they are just gonna build their own helicopter carriers now that France isn't gonna help them. But whatever Russia builds will be junk compared to the deal they had in place to get working ships from France and a master-level class on how to build them.
True man, tanks for the facts 😉😉😉
Mistral class ships, VBL and PVP vehicles, advanced thermal sight for their own troops and vehicles, advanced engine for their civilian aircrafts... All of this being thrown through the window in 2014. Thankfully.
They bought frégates which president Holland finally prevented their delivery to Russia And ended selling them cheap to 3rd countries 🤷♂️
Ffkkin hell. Russia with 1 single mirv missile hypersonic and undestroyable(as it is too fast to be taken down ) can obliterate an entire country and people still babbling another country is superior to that? In what magic world do you live?
We sold them to Egypt and they are quite happy having this kind of ships to strengthen Sinaï against Islamics organisations.
They were one of the world’s great imperial powers in the late 1800s up till world war 2. They were a European superpower under napoleon. They were arguably the most powerful country in Europe under Louis the 14th. 🤷♂️
France has almost always been powerfull, yes they lost suprisingly quickly in ww2 but one failure does not define a country, but americans love to insist on ww2 defeat to mock France.
France has been in the top 5 arms dealers in the world for decades.
And also always in the 5 strongest armies of the world since the start of cold war
France has always had a quality military production. It must be remembered that it was the French Mirages planes that ensured the crushing Israeli military victory over the Arab countries during the six-day war in 1967, so that it will create a serious diplomatic crisis between on one side France of General De Gaulle, and of the"Other side Israel and the United States when France decided to sell its mirage planes in 1969 to an Arab country Libya. The Americans and British also pressed n 1982 on the French President Mitterrand to deliver to the British at war in the Malouines against the Argentines the codes of the exocet missiles which were equipped the Argentinean planes of mark French Super Etendard , British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was distraught by the repercussions on British public opinion after the destruction of the British destroyer Sheffield by an exocet missile causing the death of 323 British sailors. The sale of French exocet missiles exploded after this episode.
France has always been a formidable military power in Europe. They are also an exellent alternative to many nations for arms sales to governments who do not want to buy from the Americans, Russians, or Chinese. They have a capable, professional Army, Navy, and Air Force that is well armed and equipped. The Foreign Legion is one of the best expeditionary forces in the world. And they are a nuclear power. France is one of the quiet bad@sses in the EU militarily. And has been for a while. Bottom line; France can hold its own militarily. Unlike many of its EU neighbors.

Who is “our”, NATO? I'm just curious as tp who the "our" is in "our" side, no aggression meant (and as an aside, I very much am glad France is in our side, too...Canadian combat vet here).
Don't get too excited. Basically, here's the point of view of France : the USA are running a protection racket, and France is not interested in joining. Trump is the first president to say it out loud. Kissinger was more subtle: "From the point of view of division of labor, the US considers French resources better spent on conventional forces than on nuclear arms".
France has excellent reasons to consider that the US are an ambiguous ally. From the Suez crisis, France, UK and Israel learnt an important lesson about the balance of powers ("No nation has friends, only interests" said Charles de Gaulle), but reacted quite differently : UK and Israel by aligning, France by pursuing an independent strategic route. The French nuclear arsenal amongst other programs was developed, simply because France doesn't believe for one second that the US would actually defend Europe (apart if they would directly benefit from it, economically or strategically). France assumed that the US wouldn't use nuclear weapons to retaliate against USSR if they would strike Europe first (as mutual destruction is not in the US interest) ; and France also assumed that the USSR knew that as well, which nullified the deterrence. Kissinger again: "Precisely because he is sure that the US will protect Europe in the immediate future, [De Gaulle] wants to use this respite to establish insurance for the far future. He is looking ahead to a time when present leaders will have disappeared and American attention may be focused on other continents".
France has been advocating for a strong independent Europe for 6 decades (and some would say: going as far as accepting arrangements detrimental to its own interests). The US had a different project: Europe should be a buffer against USSR, but never develop as a power that could challenge the balance of powers (one major aspect of the plan : ensure that the Paris-Berlin-Moscow axis never exist).
we are on our own side
Doesn't matter who's side they are on, they will always be the first to surrender anyway

As a French i'm not so sure about that
depending of the sources the americans have a biggest economic zone through. As a student french school books says that the americans come out on top and France second
France is a great power though in what place I'm unsure of to say. Quite a few countries of similar or greater strength these days to France. Like India, japan, israel, Brazil, Mexico, for example outside of Europe are similar or greater. In Europe it be germany, Poland, Italy, spain(Spain I can say is probably weaker but their a high secondary power or low great power in terms of strength), united kingdom, turkey, and probably a few others I'm missing. France has too many similar strength or stronger countries to be a super power. At best their a mid level or high level great power probably below India or Russia so around 5th to 10th strongest I'd put them. So usa, china, russia/India for 3rd and 4th, than France might be 5th strongest or at least could argue it.
Only usa claims super power status, and china trying to become one is closest in line for being a super power.

I will say two things
1) Western equipment is far superior in almost every aspect but a key drawback for these technologies is that they are far too expensive to produce and the cost to maintain the weapon systems is too. If the Ukraine conflict is teaching us anything is that cheap, and easy to build weapon systems and designs will ultimately outperform the higher quality weapons. We cannot underestimate a peak Russian wartime economy moving into next year. Ukraine, unless they get additional funding and supply for additional anti air weapon systems then their production centers will not be able to compete with Russia.
2)Our countries are giving aid with stipulations and that is not how war is being fought by the Russians. They are literally sending everything they have at the Ukrainians, while they have to fight a war under supplied and with outdated expensive western equipment. The West is fractured by Russian aggression and Macron is seeing the writing on the wall. This only ends one way.
High end equipemnt makes sense when you have smaller armies. Much like in smaller countires like those in Europe.
Lets Go MACRON 🇨🇳
Think Is West Is wealthy enough to afford such expensive weapons in much greater numbers than Russia Its cheap systems. NATO Have GDP 35 times bigger than Russia. Even germany Have 2 times bigger GDP alone. Basicaly that means germany Can afford to invest 2 times more in each single weapon And piece of ammo And still Have same amount as Russia.
Aim 120 air to air missile used by the f22 and f35 . Range 160 kms. Speed . Mach 1. R 37 air to air missile used by su 57. Range 400 kms . Speed Mach 6
Can we have more examples of “ superior “ western weapons ?😂
Abrams , leopards , etc failed badly in Ukraine . F22 f35 not battle tested against advanced air defence
Russia superiority in missiles , air defences obvious
But you fail to mention Germany/west was reliant on cheap Russian gas to power their economies which is no longer available.

Caesar trucks demonstrated French great tactical understanding of the needs in battlefields. I am French. I think right now, we are in a good moment. Our future will rely on two different streams: European partnership and indopacific (Indian especially)/arabian partnerships for normal systems. For very special systems, like hypersonic, aircraft carriers, we will continue a policy of cooperation with USA. With Europe, cooperation can last forever. MGCS, SCAF, Maritime, Twister are good Examples of this. With info pacifique partners, a question still remain on how prolonged it can be since in 2040, India by itself will be very strong. Since India is close to French Islands, we will want to maintain good ties in the long run. Same thing with Egypt, Indonesia, Singapore, EAU and Qatar, on one of the main way to our Pacifique Islands. The incentive for cooperation will remain strong, either through Radar, Rafale, submarines or MBT and coming evolutions. With USA, our mathematicians may be a good boost to US hypersonic gliders, as scientific and economic cooperation and competition has been a driver for US and Europe to stay at the forefront of innovation. Russia will play their cards as well, but Russi is in a tough spot, for reasons we have little to do with. Quality of Russian jets without French Avionics is dropping. China will rely on home industry, since they don’t need Russian motors anymore. India and Vietnam, traditional importers of Russian equipments are worried on how close Russians are to China, since China is the biggest threat to their sovereignty. We (French) have nothing to do with these developments. I wished we were masterminds of this, but we work only on what we can do (techno and prod) and try to sell. The position our competitors places themselves is not something we can work or plan for, or if so, very marginally.
Russia selling to both India and China: "I'm playing both sides so I always come out on top"

You have actually hinted at the fact that over the next three decades
India may become more powerful as its population and economy grow while at the same time
Russia's population will decline.
By the 2050s not only China but also India may see Russia as a junior partner if they are even partners at all.
We may also see countries such as Mexico and Indonesia greatly surpass Russia in GDP.
It may harder and harder for Russia to continue to pretend that it is a great power if so many countries exceed it in population and GDP..

When Russia invaded Ukraine, Thales stopped all business with Russia. This benefits to… the UK, who’s now re-opening missiles production plants for Thales.

There is an often ignored similarity between American and French people: a fair scepticism and distrust/ dislike of big brother state. Some carry guns, others burn down public offices once or twice a year.😂
Napoleon helped fund and arm the American Revolutionary War. France is quite literally America's oldest ally, France helped America gain independence.

Now we understand why Putin is pissed at France :)
More seriously, I've always wondered why France's military equipment was not more popular. In my opinion, they currently have the best quality/price ratio. The rafale is a marvel, Leclerc is a bit old but as mentioned proved far more resilient and capable than the competitors, to mention only these 2. I'm especially disapointed that European countries still chose to buy american rather than French, particularly today when we all know that american support in case of was is not 100% sure.

France has left the integrated commandment of Nato in 1966 but was still member of the alliance with the political part. Nato has 2 parts : integrated commandment + political part.
De gaulle has left the integrated commandment because France had a nuclear force in 1966 and it could not stay under the orders of Nato / USA .
the French have a powerful arms industry and above all they have excellent engineers and great experience...it's the winning trio.
the Rafale is by far the best plane today, it does everything with excellence, it is not completely stealthy but it has technologically advanced sensors which protect it from shots from beyond the electronic horizon... .and in close combat he is just unbeatable.
the F 35 doesn't know how to do everything, plus it's not finished, it's expensive, and still has big flaws that will probably never be fixed... it's a failure.
not to mention the economic blackmail practiced by the Americans while the French offer complete assistance and concrete guarantees! France has always honored its commitments, this is not the case for the Americans who have sometimes suspended their delivery of spare parts due to political or economic events that did not suit them.

I believe French generals have openly admired they are not trained and equipped for large scale intensive operations such as in SMO
We must put the comments into perspective, France has indeed lost 3 bases in Africa, but there are still half a dozen remaining.
Mali, which seemed so happy to get rid of the French, is starting to see the other side of the coin with terrorist attacks up 140% since the departure of the French and the incompetence of the Wagner group in particular and the Russians in general.

According to historian Niall Ferguson: "of the 125 major European wars fought since 1495, the French have participated in 50 - more than Austria (47) and England (43). Out of 168 battles fought since 387 BC, they have won 109, lost 49 and drawn 10", making France the most successful military power in European history-in terms of number of fought and won.

It's not the size of the army in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the army!
The French had the largest army in Europe in 1940, that particular fight ended well, hey!
absolutly false. the germans had a better army both in number and quality
@@-zawzaw-8897 Not really, the german commands knows at this time that a direct assault against the french will result in a loss for Germany. So they went through the Ardennes because French generals tought it was impossible to attack from this side. And with the blitzkrieg tactics, germans were able to push deep into France, cut resupply and finaly encircle the maginot line. So French army was encircle and stuck in their defenses.
@@JB-dn5xc Well, he was still correct, the germans had more men mobilized in the western front, and they have much more and better planes.
The French had the best army in 1933, not anymore in 1940. France had experienced two German invasions during the last sixty years, the second of which had "bled her white". Her overwhelming determination at Versailles, therefore, had been to make Germany pay for what she had done and to weaken her to such an extent that she might never again be in a position to threaten French security. For this reason, the French, in contrast with other belligerents, had remained heavily armed throughout the twenties and in 1933 possessed the most powerful army in the world. This was no mere paranoia. Even with chunks of her territory hacked off and distributed to other nations, Germany still had a population of some sixty-five million compared to France's forty. The French Military Intelligence, even prior to Hitler's advent, was providing substantial evidence of illegal German rearmament and, as the Chiefs of Staff continually reminded their political masters, France was shortly to go through the "lean years", whereby the number of conscripts for the army would be halve as a result of the low birth rate during the First World War. Anyway, the harsh terms of the Treaty of Versailles wanted by the French were not applied, because the British considered that the French having a powerful army would be seen as a threat by the Germans who were demanding equality of armaments with their neighbours.
The French Government surrendered, the French People never stopped fighting. The French Resistence was absolutely vital to allied victory. Sabateurs mapping out enemy emplacements and destroying checkpoints and depots.
France isnt close to a military superpower, at best their a major power/great power. At worse their a secondary power.
