@Lucas-hb1uq true it is a slippery slope, but if he gives up power and leaves will the problem become a problem again? There is a fine line between authoritarian and having control and safety in a country. Glad I don't live there.

@@RimCheck It poses a hard question but there are also some clear issues. MS13 and gang violence was not broadcast equally around ES and some areas were no less safe than the US. The rights that were suspended affected everyone not just the criminals and those in high crime areas. It would be similar to suspending the right of all US citizens and violating everyone’s privacy because, Chicago, NYC, LA and Detroit have violent gang issues. Unfortunately democracy is slow and politicians are easily manipulated and this leads to dictators being effective in the short term but rarely do they give up power willingly. Lets hope he’s the exception

I'm willing to bet some sum of money that any outside critique has much less to do with ethics and "human rights violations" as it does with how taking decisive and effective action is shown to be possible for even an economically developing country. It is unfortunate that some people have had to face problems in the rectification of the country's problems, but it would be even more unfortunate for a leader to sit complacent with what the gangs continued to do. This approach has so far been proven effective. You don't defeat cruel and murderous gangs by playing to all the rules. And I bet the bulk of the criticism comes from the more economically strong countries who STILL struggle with gang violence and want to draw eyes away from the results to cover their own asses.

I'm half-El Salvadorean from my father and when I mentioned this to my father, he was ecstatic and approved of how safe his home country was because of these crackdowns. The international community can yap all they want, but very few of those arguing about the measures taken have done anything to help. They only care the moment anything they deem un-democratic and authoritarian happens.
Countries don't have to be democratic to be a good place to live. Not all governments need to have the same exact ideals. So long as the law-abiding citizens are safe, happy, and respected by their governments then nothing else matters. As long as a government isn't going off and attacking and bully other nations without very just cause, it doesn't matter. Let others live and govern themselves the way they want. It's not your business until you're attacked or screwed with negatively.
Just be sure the leadership does not fall into the lure of corruption and you're fine.

Not only does the cartel receive weapons from the US, they also receive training from ex special forces from around South and Northern American countries.
Mexico is also way larger, with many more people.
The weaponry and technology some of these cartels have rival developed countries.
It's going to be tough for Mexico.

Imagine living in a world where you can turn your country from the most dangerous to nearly the safest seemingly overnight, and international organizations object instead of giving you a medal.
Defending your country isn't just a right, it's an obligation. Send all the gang members to the UN headquarters since they know exactly what to do with them.

You have to have lived in El Salvador before Bukele to have the balls to criticize him. He won 85%.in a fair vote. That doesn't happen with countries that have fair votes, but it happened in El Salvador because El Salvador had a hero who saved peoples sons and daughters.
Both of my brothers were killed by gangs because they refused to join. They were murdered as they were leaving town to work on a freighter out at sea. They wanted to get a way from the violence, but it found them anyway.

El Salvador shouldn’t care much about what other countries think, and I’m glad Bukele doesn’t. It’s always easy to criticize from outside. Every country has problems. The best people to fix it are their own citizens. If Bukele gets drunk on power though, the people should be quick to take their power back. Or else they’ll suffer all over again.

Sometimes, a country needs what I call a " benign dictator " to restore it to sanity. The leader has to control everything and everybody until such time as the country stabilizes. He is benign because he is dictating for the good of the country. Time will tell if he will remain true to the ideals with which he started. In the interim he needs to be supported by all.
